happy this is happening.

sucks that half of the venues have artificial turf.

mizzell, Thursday, 19 November 2015 17:16 (eight years ago) link

yeah, it's definitely unfortunate. professional soccer should not be played on artificial turf except in extenuating circumstances - really harsh climate + lack of money to maintain grass makes it justified in smaller, lower/smaller league club soccer imo.

definitely going to a game in seattle (im in van bc), hoping chile play a group game there, if not I'm hoping for a knockout game or two to be played there.

will be interesting to see how popular this tournament will be.

otm about artificial turf, tho apparently they're laying down temp grass which is still stupid

USA, Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico announced as seeded teams. USA and Arg will play in Chicago for sure. Gonna get on that presale, likely the best benefit to Fire season tix this year.

pulling stats for this week's games, saw this for argentina-chile tonight:

Chile was not able to convert in any of the last 7 matches vs Argentina at the Copa America. The last time they scored a goal vs Argentina was in 1959, they lost 1-6.

would be shocked if this streak continues after how chile looked against mexico the other night

Colombia looking very good here, thought not quite at Mexico or Argentina's level.

Just curious since this thread isn't getting much traffic: Is it less interesting because it's an off-sequence tournament, or do people just not care on a different level? Or maybe it's the time the games are played? It's a little surprising honestly, given the traffic on the Euros thread.

pratt truss it (dan m), Wednesday, 8 June 2016 03:59 (seven years ago) link

wrt to copa america popularity compared to the euros, well it's style, stars and location i guess

latin american football is pretty different and the players are considered lower tier, with most wanting to make it big in europe; probably because they are bigger markets, so more money

and the euros will start friday with tonnes of star players. i mean just look at germany though they have a lot of older players now as well

F♯ A♯ (∞), Wednesday, 8 June 2016 19:02 (seven years ago) link

they have pretty much failed to deliver on the stars that are participating, it's true, although James is kicking ass

I don't agree with the lower level part overall, I mean Bolivia suuuuucks, and never mind Haiti, but there has been some top level play for sure

RIP Haiti btw

Here comes the CONCACAF filth

pratt truss it (dan m), Saturday, 11 June 2016 01:53 (seven years ago) link

on the one hand, it's nice to not watch a complete bus park fest. Panama is obviously raw and lack technical skills but they're fairly good athletes with some speed and sometimes they overachieve through sheer will.

But they're also flop artists and much like Bolivia, their defensive strategy is jumping on opposing players' backs and wailing away.

also lol was that five yellows in fifteen minutes?

p much don't see anybody who's taking down Argentina in this tourney unless Mexico keeps form, but Chile could always regain their form - they just got deflated after the equalizer and were facing a team playing for a draw for 75 of the 90 minutes. Brazil scoring 7 on Haiti is indicative of p much nothing but given who has been bounced already they'll probably go far enough.

lol another yellow

as far as Penedo, I heckle him every time his punk ass comes to Orlando.

Neanderthal, Saturday, 11 June 2016 01:58 (seven years ago) link

$132 might have been worth it to see Messi except what's the point of putting him in if they rack up a multi-goal lead. possibly just to tune him up but they could just as easily do that in the next match.

Neanderthal, Saturday, 11 June 2016 03:28 (seven years ago) link

mostly due to goal differential, that is.

Neanderthal, Saturday, 11 June 2016 03:30 (seven years ago) link

xp Monterrey Security are complete hamfisted jackasses when it comes to pitch invaders... either the invader gets to run around in circles while their guards stand around mouthbreathing, or the guards absolutely shitpaste the invader and beat him up on the sidelines. I've seen both happen multiple times, never just quietly shepherding them away.

pratt truss it (dan m), Saturday, 11 June 2016 14:26 (seven years ago) link

When Montreal came to town to play the Fire, a guy ran out on the field in the second half, took a selfie with Drogba, then ran back into the crowd. Not one Monterrey guard did squat until some fans in the stands grabbed the guy and held on to him until security showed up. Players chased the guy off the field, not security.

relevant to today's matches:

NOTE: If Brazil and Peru results in a scoreless draw and Ecuador wins 1-0, Brazil wins the group, but Peru and Ecuador are tied with +1 goal differential, 3 goals scored and are equal on head-to-head record with their 2-2 draw. In this scenario, the advancing team will be decided by a drawing of lots.

Apparently there is a red card appeal process but I doubt it'll work out if tried.

Venezuela has been the surprise of the tournament, imo: just missed beating Mexico to win the group, conceded 1 goal in the first round (but only scored 3).

pratt truss it (dan m), Friday, 17 June 2016 04:12 (seven years ago) link

with that new rule it's pointless for Jermaine.

even w/ nobody suspended the US wasn't winning that one, hopefully we'll just give a good ride. gutted for them not being able to be on the field tho.

i'm amazed there wasn't a yellow for the stuffing the ball into the player's chest by Ecuador on the sideline. ref started to lose control a bit at that point

Neanderthal, Friday, 17 June 2016 05:23 (seven years ago) link

first one, which was the opening goal of the match, was a goalkeeping mistake by claudio bravo, who let a weak shot from distance trickle in the net.

2 hours until chile v mexico. i fear this will be the end of the tournament for my beloved andean rascals, but should be an entertaining game for sure, 3 goals or more p much guaranteed.

thinking of this again: think both of the goals were goalkeeping mistakes (can't remember that well only watched the highlights).

same announcers/etc, not sure about production teams. tonight's coverage has been closer to how European matches are shown where you only show replays during down moments. the other night w/ USA and Ecuador they kept diverting away from the action for long periods of time, then the camera would swing back and you'd see a team outside the box lining up a cross. I was waiting for them to outright miss a goal.

Before the USA Argentina match he had some kind of crazy argument that the US was not an underdog and Fernando Fiore finally asked him "So you think it's 50/50?"

Post-game Messi apparently said he's retiring from international play?

pratt truss it (dan m), Monday, 27 June 2016 12:30 (seven years ago) link

lost all four major international finals, he's fed up

ogmor, Monday, 27 June 2016 12:44 (seven years ago) link

I felt bad for Messi immediately following the game. Has been unable to bring success to Argentina and has just lost 3 major finals in two years with the country. Even taking into account his missed penalty last night in the shootout - which is a grave error for sure - he's been their best player in those 3 tournaments and often their best player in the finals they've lost. Despite this the Argentinean public have always been overly hostile to him, never really warming to him or accepting him, criticising him heavily for any real or perceived failures, referring to him as "the Catalan" etc. And he had talked about international retirement before, about 5 years ago due to this.

Still think retiring from the national team is the wrong call. Still, he has 2 years until the next WC, could always return.

Delighted with Chile obviously. Last year when they hosted the Copa America they were in great form, the Borghi era was a great success, had retained the good parts of the Bielsa era, but added some more defensive composure. With the home crowd it really seemed like the only time Chile could possibly hope to win the Copa America, and they did. Then the ANFP (national association of professional football) fell out with Borghi, then Pizzi came in, results and form were poor. Came into this tournament not looking that great, started with a defeat to Argentina, should have been eliminated against Bolivia - won with a very soft penalty in injury time and Bolivia subsequently blew a clear opportunity to equalize with the last kick of the ball. But then the dismantling of Mexico was basically peak Chile. And from what I saw of the highlights last night Argentina were the better team, but the grit and fight of Chile kept them alive.

This is the greatest generation of Chilean footballers, and thankfully it's a relatively young squad. Will be together for the next world cup and the next Copa America in 3 years time. Fantastic to go from basically being an irrelevance in South American football to winning the Copa America twice.

The Nickelbackean Ethics (jim in glasgow), Monday, 27 June 2016 16:45 (seven years ago) link

agh, and of course it was Sampaoli who had brought chile to their apotheosis, won the Copa America last year, and then was swiftly gotten rid of, the ANFP just likes to go through Bielsista managers at an alarming rate and it can be hard to keep up

The Nickelbackean Ethics (jim in glasgow), Monday, 27 June 2016 16:51 (seven years ago) link

sorry I missed this thread. been away from ilx for a few months.

i watched all the Chile games (and attended one) plus a bunch of others. thrilled for my Roja, gutted for Messi nonetheless (really, it's one thing to live in the shadow of that other #10, and another when that 10 is alive and surfaces to gargle his stomach acids at the worst possible times).

one thing that seems to have escaped notice from much of the post-Final press i've read (most of which is about the Argentina/Messi "curse" etc): the work of the Chilean midfield in the final game, and in particular Vidal. Monster game from Arturo.

cheers jim!

Qatar played well and should probably have won from 2-0 down.

Japan starting with a striker who had never played a professional football match possibly suggests they aren’t taking it all that seriously. Makes sense to give their youth team a taste of major tournaments, though.

Argentina were predictably awful.

ShariVari, Tuesday, 18 June 2019 06:11 (four years ago) link

Not 100% sure but I think when teams have guest spots outside their confederation they typically don't send full power teams. I know USA didn't when they were in the Copa in 2007.

bit of a barmy tournament so far. highlight must be argentina sitting at the bottom of their group equal on points with qatar (who they have still to play and will almost undoubtedly defeat). uruguay and japan game ending in a 2-2 draw and venezuela holding brazil to a nil nil also quite interesting.

findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Friday, 21 June 2019 18:28 (four years ago) link

Brazil had three goals ruled out by VAR! The Japan result was a real shock.

I think Qatar might be pretty decent by the time of the World Cup if they continue at this rate. There is less of a reliance on naturalised Brazilians and some of their young players look quite good prospects.

Weird that VAR was relatively unobtrusive in 2018 World Cup and so abysmal this year. Probably due to the terrible 6/1 rule rollout that has every nothing called a handball

Got your butt drank (Neanderthal), Sunday, 30 June 2019 23:27 (four years ago) link

well that was rough.

peru beat chile 3-0 to go through to the final vs brazil (who beat argentina, likely ending lionel messi's chances of ever winning a trophy with argentina).

brazil of course beat peru 5-0 already the tournament, so, not sure the final is going to be a classic.

nice for peru tho, first final since 1975.
