New England boss Roy Hodgson spoke with John Terry and Rio Ferdinand on Tuesday and has decided that only one can go to Euro 2012, according to ESPN sources.
The expectation is that the Chelsea captain will miss out on the European Championships, but that remains unconfirmed until the squad is announced at 1pm on Wednesday.

xpost gerrard won't be overrun as such, just he doesn't actually do anything anymore. his goals tally is hugely down, he doesn't bother tackling/defending anymore and he never surges forward on the ball either as far as i can tell. keep waiting for him to get a new lease of life but don't think it's going to happen.
i just think parker is too ponderous for international level. he was exposed hugely in the holland game.

Is everyone else still playing with two holding midfielders? Parker alongside someone else, ie Carrick, might have worked reasonably well, but we have no idea.
Foster, Richards, Ferdinand, Jagielka, Gibbs, Lennon, Carrick, Scholes, A Johnson, Sturridge, Crouch <- would stand a chance of beating that lot.

this pick is stupid, why roy why
It is certainly easy to pick holes in his Euro 2012 squad and there were times when Hodgson strayed dangerously close to perplexing his audience. At one point he cited the way Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had troubled Andrea Pirlo in Arsenal's Champions League tie against Milan (Pirlo had left the club the previous summer). Later, the manager explained he had called off next week's training camp in Málaga partly because Manchester City's players had been celebrating a league triumph and "would find it hard to be on a plane on Monday". You looked at him to see if it was a joke and it quickly became apparent it wasn't.
― mizzell, Thursday, 17 May 2012 20:01 (eleven years ago) link
The simple truth is there is an absence of real quality in abundance, something that was not lost on Hodgson. "You don't necessarily have to be the best team to win a tournament," he said. "You can get by with good team spirit, and a bit of luck at the right times."
These were revealing moments by the side of Manchester City's pitch, if only for the frequency with which Hodgson halted play to pass on instructions. "Very hands-on," James Milner observed afterwards. Vocal, too. "You don't have to use short passes," the new England manager could be heard shouting at one point. "Not if you want to use your big man up front." Carroll put the ball past Joe Hart and Hodgson nodded his head appreciatively. "Well done, son."

There's a great scene where he's discussing something with Phil Neal, who is just violently agreeing with everything he says, and they look towards McMenemy for his opinion and he's moved as far away from them as he can on the bench and is writing (presumably his resignation letter) on a scrap of paper.

lol, that was useless. Made more so by Hodgson opining post-match that England passed the ball too much in the 2nd half and should have got it forward earlier! England's passing was shocking, although Downing can add +1 to his total of "should have been an assist" thanks to Carroll wasting a lovely cross. Nice goal from Ashley Young although Hangeland's defending was woeful. Still in ever changing times it's nice that at least the general level of England performances remains the same.

I think England getting out of the group will be enough to stop Roy taking too much criticism given how low expectations are (compared with previous tournaments). That should be enough to take him through qualifying from an easy group to being sacked for not reaching the semis of the next World Cup.
― a permanent embarrassment and an occasional disgrace (onimo), Friday, 1 June 2012 08:45 (eleven years ago) link
from an easy WC group, that is.
England's prospects of getting out the group have got to be pretty low tbh. France seem tasty, Ukraine have home advantage and are rumoured to be alright, and the squad, manager and formation is almost custom-designed not to beat Sweden. Then there's injuries, insane logistics, general knackeredità, ennui and so forth.

Half of Newcastle's squad is English and they finished way above a team that's making up more than a quarter of the England squad. Is Martin Kelly better than every English defender at Newcastle?

Sure. Sad to see LFC missing out on a full team at the Euros by 2 spots. Suppose I'll have to count Nando, Xabi, and Arbeloa.

Aye my mistake I looked up his appearances and they were listed the wrong way round, with his first season last. Knew I'd seen him more than that in the late part of the season.
Ten league starts (only one between October and March - though he was used in most cup games*). Lost four of them. Four clean sheets. As decent as anyone in a Liverpool shirt this season then (i.e. significantly worse than Newcastle).
*kind of makes sense to pick so many players from this season's Cup Team, I suppose, and to ignore league form as it's mostly foreigners making the difference at the top of the table.

Last year, rare mistakes [by Hart] gifted Switzerland’s Tranquillo Barnetta two goals at Wembley. “I’d have liked to have saved both but I’m not going to defend what happened and say, ‘It’s so tough’ and ‘bodies are flying in’. It happened. We got the result and I’m grateful.
“Ashley Young scored a late goal and we qualified. I just don’t get too wrapped up in it. I think about it technically and what I could have done better. Was it laziness? Was it whatever? And then I move on.”

I think he was a great buy for us at something like 5% of an Andy Carroll (who Hooper outscored with a lesser team in the Championship). He was man of the match by miles the other night and was involved in everything good that happened for Celtic.

Back in 2000, Gerrard’s debut against Ukraine gave him first-hand, in-the-face experience of the demands of captaincy and England expectations.Just out of his teenage years, Gerrard sat nervously in the dressing-room at Wembley, listening to the captain, Alan Shearer, shouting “get stuck in”.Tony Adams, another leader, walked across and stood in front of Gerrard, checking on final preparations to meet Andrei Shevchenko, Sergei Rebrov and company.“Are you f****** ready?” bellowed Adams. Gerrard looked into Adams’ eyes, understood the supreme significance of the occasion, and replied: “You bet I’m f****** well ready.”

This is more like it imo:
The first cap came against Ukraine in 2000 when Gerrard was not quite the worldly, streetwise operator we see now. "I'd travelled down in the same car as Robbie Fowler and Steve McManaman," he recalls. "I'd told them how carefully I'd packed my bag. My mum had done my undies, ironed all my socks. I went back to my hotel room after training and everything was in the bath, with the water running." Gerrard had turned 20 the day before the match. "Happy birthday soft-arse" was written in foam on the mirrors.

Remember when Neuer tried this for Schalke v Inter, connected cleanly and headed the ball past halfway, and still saw it volleyed over his head by Stankovic? Love that goal.

i mean yeah this is awesome but just not near BEST EVER
id guess a high proportion of these sort of freakish goals occur in the first or last minutes of games, before an equilibrium is found and when the game degenerates into ramdomness
did you actually watch the game tho? id guess that if you did it would explain the ~unexpectedness~ not really applying to those who had already seen it described

kuyty on a mission (pandemic) wrote this on thread Taking advantage of Young Boys: Champions League & Europa League 2010/11 on board I Love Football on Apr 6, 2011
Schalke line up had 3 or 4 19 year olds in it and they still pwnd Inter. Guess that team does need rebuilding after all. Nice to see Raul being Raul. Schalke have been desperate this season, still bottom 1/3 in Bundesliga I think, but when he can be bothered Farfan is a heck of a player.
Recorded both games last night and decided to watch first ten mins of Inter/Schalke before I left for work at 2am this morning, my loud cry of "HOLY FUCK!" when Stankovic scored after 25 secs may lead to recriminations when the rest of my household arrives home from work later. But if ever a goal was worthy of the term it was that one.
― pandemic, Wednesday, 14 November 2012 23:40 (eleven years ago) link
Actually i've just watched it again and from the angle behind the goal you can clearly see that he's shinned it. Oh well

LITMANEN WHOOHOO LITMANEN WOOHOOO. You fools! :) He's a god, Ajax immediatly improved a 100% with all his clever passes and forcing his team mates to play one-touch footie. Suddenly even our problem child Ibrahimovic is connecting and scoring goals too.
Real Madrid. Even as a fan I was sort of shocked by the cold efficiency with which they killed off Roma. Cold but always with a sense of beauty of course. The last 10 minutes reminded me a lot of the way Ajax around 1972 would freeze games just by passing into infinity.

Zlatan has scored more bewildering and unlikely goals than that one. Shame I didn't watch tonight. He seems to be doing v. well in France too. I guess being a lazy and arrogant bugger won't see him change much in his 30s.

Speaking of their time together at Dutch club Ajax between 2001 and 2003, Ibrahimovic, who now plays for AC Milan in Italy, said: “Mido, my friend, publicly declared that he wanted to be sold. Not especially tactical, in all honesty, he wasn't exactly a diplomat, he was like me but even worse.
“Later, when he had been on the bench against Eindhoven, he came into the changing room and called us all lousy.”
Ibrahimovic said the pair argued before the row turned physical.
“He grabbed a pair of scissors which were lying on a bench there and threw them at me. It was completely mad, to be honest.
“The scissors swooshed past my head, straight into the locker room wall and hit with a crack and, of course, I stood up and gave him a punch, a bang.
“But after ten minutes we went out, arm in arm, and a long time later I found out that our team manager had saved those scissors as a memory, kind of like something to show to the children, that this was the one that Zlatan almost got in his face.”

Ah, fucking this off. I'd rather watch more of the new AD tbh, and I've not been enjoying that much at all. Watching England = like reading a pulpy Stephen King / Goosebumps tale with the kernel of a fantastic and effective idea for a horror story at its heart; somewhere between a vague yet still completely recognisable sensation of insidious, grasping existential horror that this is actually happening in the world and, idk, the Cuckoo Clock of Doom / Groundhog Day device. And the story's being written by a buffoon who can't do dialogue and keeps using the same plot over and over again. And there's not been a twist for about 10 fucking years.

Dunno. Was once in a game where scouts from Reading and Southampton came to watch our schools team and fatty Jon Chard scored 9 in some sort of freak show (our normal forward was on holiday iirc? and we usually lost e'ery week), got put on trials at both sides and was lol'd away when he turned up to show each team how rubbish he actually was. Mebbe should ring him and ask him if it was a hathatrick or a hathathatrick.

When Roy Hodgson was asked this week which player he would most like to pinch from a rival team at the coming World Cup finals, the England manager gave his questioner, Garry Richardson of Radio 5 Live, an answer that was both amusing and diplomatic. He would take Mario Balotelli from Italy for the opening Group D fixture, he said, followed by Luis Suárez from Uruguay, and then, for the final group match, "whoever is Costa Rica's best player – I haven't quite done my research on that yet".

the emergence of some actual fitba players means england could probably field a team that wouldn't look like an england team, but hodgson will probably play a mixture of fitba players and vermin like carroll, townsend, milner etc
― Little Saint Hugh of Lincoln (nakhchivan), Friday, 18 April 2014 15:58 (ten years ago) link
if they had a manager whose morés derived from somewhere past the 1980s (as much as i like hodgson personally, he is an old 66 year old compared to wenger, lucescu, del bosque, van gaal and other surviving contemporaries) then things could be different
they would probably be best served recognizing that twp without speed is not really worth building a team around and playing a proper 4-3-3 with a midfield of gerrard wilshere and carrick or henderson, sturridge as first choice #9, then either play twp or welbeck as inside left and sterling or chamberlain as a right winger
with twp as support striker or '#10' as he is sometimes risibly categorized, england have so little useful possession that they can barely even play a counterattacking game let alone an expansive one, it will just be two deep midfielders desperately trying to clear the lines every time they regain the ball
tenacious, aggressive high energy midfield with good long passing ability and at least one runner (maybe barkley if wilshere can't play) to break the lines and plenty of speed in attack is probably the best combination they have
― Little Saint Hugh of Lincoln (nakhchivan), Friday, 18 April 2014 16:06 (ten years ago) link

Assuming Wilshere isn't going to make it but that actually wouldn't be bad. Although even the good England players will get sucked down into the general torpor when the actual tournament comes round.

the backlash against him is a bit over the top
he wouldn't get near the midfield of the best teams but as england's only midfielder with close control and dribbling ability, he has to play if he is fit

gerrard isn't really slow, he has slowed but that is from being a player whose sprint times were better than michael owen, as a deep lying midfielder he's fine
barry lampard or carrick provide different varieties of slowness from geological time to the merely arthritic but the options are just so limited
delph lallana etc are just nowhere near good enough, even henderson can look very lightweight at times, but he is the only =< 25 y/o midfield runner who has experience of playing in a champions league level team

Roy Hodgson has likened the pressure Wayne Rooney faces at the World Cup to the expectation on Al Pacino and Jack Nicholson to churn out Oscar-winning performances.
"You can only hope your attention to prepare him falls on soil which will enable the plant to grow and that when he gets on the field he will feel 'right, I am Wayne Rooney, I feel good, I am going to play, I am going to do all things that built me up to what I am'.
"I am sure it must be the same for Hollywood film stars. When you start off, you make your first film and no-one knows much about you. You might get a few good reviews, but one day you're going to be Al Pacino or be Jack Nicholson, and then suddenly you better make a f***ing good film.''

its actually quite an apt comparison the way he says it. if you are treated as the best thing going, then you best back it up. if yr not going to live up to the hype, then buck the fuck up or be seen as a failure. as much shit as we give the white pele, we have all seen him be a world beater at times but its way more anne hathaway 'i loved this one film they were in so fuck the romcoms they do' and less matthew mcconghey 'hey every film this guy is in actually lives up to the hype these days' sorta shit.

“There are three categories of players. The first one are top class. You admire them. They will win you trophies. In the middle you find normal players. Sometimes good, sometimes bad. "We can't demand they wear those hats when they go back to their clubs. We have to quite happily accept when they have done their 10 days with us, they put that hat away and they put a new one on. This is about England and my job now is to do my job for England."

Read somewhere that Wayne Rooney has started running again this week. Didn't see it mentioned whether it was for the first time in ten years or what did they mean.
― Ecomigrant gnomics (darraghmac), Saturday, 26 March 2016 14:55 (eight years ago) link
Assuming Wilshere is going to be injured 90% of the time, and Carrick is too old and slow, then Alli is probably the only realistic choice for a deep-lying playmaker role, assuming Hodgson was to go with one. But I can't see that being the best use of him given that his supply line to Kane has been so productive all season. That role might be more of an option with Vardy in the side, although I'm guessing he'll be the impact sub to take advantage of tiring defenders.
I'm not sure I know what England's best XI looks like that this stage, although it probably doesn't involve Rooney. There are several very good English players to have emerged since the last World Cup so a creditable QF exit should be within reach, but any of the conceivable CB pairings look a long way short of international standard.
Even allowing for the patchiness of the squad and Sterling being injured, surely there has to be a better right-sided option than Danny Welbeck?
I haven't seen or heard too much of him this season, but how has Henderson being doing?

You wouldn't bet against Germany scoring with any of their attacks and the centre backs and keepers have been dodgy but this has been a really good performance from England irrespective of what happens in the last ten minutes. They look faster and more creative with Alli, Kane and Welbeck than I can recall seeing them in a long time. Putting Rooney back in to gum up the works would be criminal.

this has been a really good performance from England irrespective of what happens in the last ten minutes. They look faster and more creative with Alli, Kane and Welbeck than I can recall seeing them in a long time. Putting Rooney back in to gum up the works would be criminal.
Putting Rooney back into the team would be an act of wanton vandalism at this stage, to the extent that I'm actually wondering if it will even happen. In general, there was a distinct lack of the kind of surliness you used to get from England players, a sense that this group actually want to play for England. The problem is that expectations were relatively low and will now be ratcheted up in the usual tedious way, probably getting to a few of them. OTOH most of them seem like a decent crop of kids, personality-wise, so maybe that won't happen.
Hodgson has been extremely fortunate to have had both Pochettino and Klopp managing in the Premiership at the same time, with a couple of players who have been managed by both. It means that there's a ready-made footballing philosophy that can be imported wholesale. There's a decent argument to be made for building the midfield entirely out of Spurs and Liverpool players because they'll outrun most teams at the tournament - getting through England's midfield could be a lot more difficult than its been for a while. It'll need to be because the defence looks really suspect.
The movement and interplay in advanced positions was better than I've seen from England in a very long time, refreshing to see an England team not just chugging up and down the field in tramlines. The lol golden generation contained several very good players but it wasn't overburdened with pace, so that's another thing this lot have in their favour.
Sterling and Sturridge might yet come into the equation (a fully-fit Sturridge is still England's best striker, although Kane is gaining ground), but it's very difficult to see a serious argument to be made for including the likes of Walcott, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Townsend and Ashley Young.

yeah mostly otm. there is still going to be a tedious pundits and old lags debate about Rooney from now until the tournament, Hodgson shd get it over with and announce his absence from the squad now just for the lulz/clarity
― disco Polo (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 27 March 2016 09:59 (eight years ago) link
Expecting Hodgson to come out and reassure people that Rooney is still the first name on the teamsheet.

Was it, thinking of LFC/spurs attack contingent, coincidence that welbeck slowed moves down a lot by wanting an extra touch all night?
I like welbeck but

Kane taking free kicks is complete bullshit.

Something common to spurs and england is almost total lack of ambition off the ball from the midfield. Really conservative in what theyll offer the man on the ball ito options.

still not totally convinced by smalling's worth as a player, but he has turned a little corner in my affections this season on account of his surprisingly squeaky voice and his oddly guileless twitter game: https://twitter.com/ChrisSmalling/status/722346925610168320

Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy were split far too wide with the captain thrust up between them like an eager wet dog plonking itself in an unwelcome lap
https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2016/jun/02/england-roy-hodgson-wayne-rooney-out-of-shape
This is surely, surely obvious to everyone apart from Rooney himself now. If he must start it has to be in place of Vardy.
― On a Raqqa tip (ShariVari), Friday, 3 June 2016 08:21 (seven years ago) link
The point about pulling Kane and Alli further apart is a good one. How many goals did that partnership lead to this season?
Obviously Alli is getting sent off in our disastrous final game, that much is a foregone conclusion.

danny murphy - there should be something in place so ex-players can skip coaching badges, it's too much trouble with too many hurdles in the way. I could have passed my 'b' license at 14, i knew it all at 12".
