or more commonly these days those who fuck w/science

ice cr?m, Monday, 19 January 2009 14:53 (fifteen years ago) link

Identical twins are random, or so they say. The mechanism (random splitting of zygote) is much different than for fraternal twins (two eggs released at once). I think that there is a "release-more-than-one-egg-at-a-time" gene. My wife is in SFPOM (parents of multiples), and almost everyone other than us has fraternal twins as the result of some kind of fertility treatment or in-vitro procedure.

schwantz, Monday, 19 January 2009 18:37 (fifteen years ago) link

How do you get them to hike with you? Trying to walk anywhere with Howie is impossible -- he just goes round and round in circles, or gets fixated on a pile of stones and won't leave, or wants to dig for worms, or gets startled (particularly by dogs) and demands to be carried. He is fine as long as you don't have a destination, but trying to get from A to B? Forget it...

Meg (Meg Busset), Monday, 19 January 2009 21:21 (fifteen years ago) link

That's what Owen was doing in that picture. I dunno, I guess we just take our time, carry them a bit, etc. That hike goes from point A to point wherever, and then back to point A, so if we sense them getting worn out, we just turn around...

that's an xbox360 (white box) and a ps3 up there. we're planning to get rid of the xbox. the only video game she's really shown interest in is katamari and last time i tried (which was a long time ago, i guess) she couldn't quite get the analog sticks on the ps controller moving together all the time. plus im sure she was just all 'woah! ball!'. but, yeah, i'm happy for her to play games as soon as she can/wants to. i bet wii would be fun with a toddler/preschooler!

Is that a seat thing Elisabeth is sitting in? And what age were you able to stick them in the bath together? Current no.1 on my panic list of 'how the f am I going to cope with two children' is the logistics of bathtime...

Meg (Meg Busset), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 20:10 (fifteen years ago) link

how close are you now, meg?

quadratrillionaire (sunny successor), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 20:24 (fifteen years ago) link

Eight weeks (or ten, if he's as late as Howie was). Close enough to be terrifyingly real yet long enough for me to despair at having another two months of reflux, sore feet, breathlessness, constant blocked sinuses and all the other joys of late pregnancy...

Meg (Meg Busset), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 21:02 (fifteen years ago) link

ok, TMI but whatevs (waves at elisabeth): she loves to rub her vagina while sitting in this little seat. and no it isn't allergy, unless she loooooooooooooooooooooves being itchy if you know what i mean. but anyway, i bought this for ophelia who freaked the fuck out (same goes with anything which is/was confined). so i neglected it and always went in her in the bath until my belly was too big. with elisabeth i put her in and she loved it. at what age? not sure really, as soon as she was able to sit indie style (more or less). don't worry about two kids in a bath. in the beginning we would always be with two (husband and i) but now i could handle it alone pretty easily. but we usually do this together as it is LOADS of fun! more fun than one kid plonking in the bath!

Nathalie (stevienixed), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 21:18 (fifteen years ago) link

xpost What a great pic, Nath! And yes, K's milk came in, maybe about day five? Latching was surprisingly easy--now our 'problem' is that we're always just a little worried that she's feeding too often (that we use the breast to soothe her too much, that maybe she's become a 'snacker' who doesn't suck enough to satisfy herself for very long, etc.).

But really I think that's pretty much an evening thing, when K's milk is lower...it happens every evening, but we've actually been having pretty good nights lately (fingers crossed): 2 or 3 hours of sleep in between feeds.

f f murray abraham (G00blar), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 21:18 (fifteen years ago) link

gooblar, don't worry (hahahah as if you're not going to) just go with the (milk) flow. i have heard of only one case where the mommy created a big fat michelin baby cause she BF like every other five minutes. heehee.

also, i think my first real experience of the joy of having two kids was when i put them in bath together and they really played together. SO SO SO much fun. nearly shed a tear. (yeah i'm a crybaby stfu)

Nathalie (stevienixed), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 21:21 (fifteen years ago) link

X-post: Ah yes, the evening cluster feeds. Very common but it does pass -- for now, think of it as the baby getting her order in for the next day.

Arrival of a new camera in our household doesn't mean the kids are being any more cooperative for the lens, but I'll what I can dredge up from the first few hundred exposures tonight...

I think it's gonna be ok! Not too long after you guys left, we got called up, and the actually nice lady assured me that if I could get my high school transcripts faxed over, I could bring 'em in (without having to bring the baby in again) and get the passport without having to make another appointment.

So I've called my high school, who can't, apparently, send a fax overseas. But my mom's neighbor is going to pick up the transcripts and scan+email them to me. Maybe by the time I get them my stomach will have returned to normal functioning.

I know, it's pretty wild when you think about it. A couple years ago my Dad hauled out some super 8 footage of me from when I was stumbling around in diapers and it was so nuts watching that little drunken sailor looking person and realizing that was me. Mind was blown. I can't even imagine what that's like when it's your own kids you're watching do the growing.

How can there be male ladybugs? (Laurel), Thursday, 19 March 2009 20:41 (fifteen years ago) link

It may be the wrong place to say this, but I wouldn't worry about things like "timing" when it comes to makin' babies (if you want 'em.)

If someone had told sunny and me, Yeah you're going to get this kid, but three months later he's going to get six months of chemothereapy and then a year's worth of two mortgages, we might have postponed.

And that would've been regretful, to say the very, very least.

Beeps is lucky to have an aunt who is a figure skater and skating coach so she gets free private lessons. They usually don't let kids under four in the classes but the rink owners don't seem to mind when it comes to a coaches relative. Also nostalgic for me because my father snuck me off to ice skating lessons (ie without my moms knowledge) when I was two.

Things is Beeps looks so damn confident there - "I'm gonna be skating over to that corner and then probably over to that corner" - and her little skates - so cute - I see little versions of Converses or Dr Martin's and I immediately want to have another baby just so I can buy 'em.
(note to self: this is not a good reason to have another baby)

Ben is smart! Ava's a good reader, not such a good writer (but she's come on a lot in the last six months - maybe it's a left-handed thing but she'd get tremendously frustrated at not being able to do much more than scribble at 3-3.5; now she's drawing "mummy, daddy and two monkeys having an argument on the moon" and it doesn't look like an off-day at the Pollock studio).

One of Ava's neighbourhood chums is a boy called Roman - he has younger triplet brothers (Devon, Sonny and Lucas), two of which are identical. They have this great Goodies-style "trandem" buggy.

schwantz, Monday, 25 May 2009 16:14 (fourteen years ago) link

Yes, she loves the sea. And so does Elisabeth.

SS, not a miniskirt! Just a pair of jeans. :-) I guess O does have that "oh busted" look but usually it's the other way around: Elisabeth may be the youngest, she can kick up a mean storm when she doesn't get her way. it seems this is usually the case: the youngest being the "bully". :-)

Aaah. I got one as a kid. A Muppet Show kit. My parents threw it out. My obvious No Wave tendencies didn't click with my mother's migraine attacks. hahahahahahah I would play HOURS on it. I loved it so much. There you go, a career as an 80s Shaggs drummer was lost forever.

Those babies sure are growing fast! We need some new ones here. :-)

Is it me, or is everyone having kids? Friends of ours as well. One's expecting in November. Anotehr couple are due in September. Twins no less!

A little collage of recent pics; some film photos taken at Ava's school sports day (though Lulu was clearly determined to be centre of attention anyway) and a coupla digital pics from Soho Square on Saturday (the dance stage at Pride, drag queens not pictured):
