If McDonald's had draft beer, I guess I'd eat there. Today at Shake Shack they played Wild Nothing. Great summer vibes.

Treeship, Friday, 5 September 2014 01:20 (nine years ago) link

Now I'm in Chipotle and they're playing the Smiths.

Gay Fire Beautiful Dong (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 5 September 2014 01:29 (nine years ago) link

They've since played Nico. "Please don't confront me with my failures..." poignant in lieu of all the garbage i've eaten today

Gay Fire Beautiful Dong (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 5 September 2014 01:30 (nine years ago) link

Gay Fire Beautiful Dong (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 5 September 2014 01:30 (nine years ago) link

Course of a day. After student teaching orientation in south philly ended at 11 i took the bus to walnut, ate at shake shack, walked back to west philly, talked on the phone with people in my apartment, took a nap, walked around some more talking on the phone, and then went into chipotle

Treeship, Friday, 5 September 2014 01:32 (nine years ago) link

ethical and sustainability questions aside, is a shake shack burger ~better~ than say a big mac? less in terms of money than in time standing in line like a dork. asking for a friend.

Gay Fire Beautiful Dong (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 5 September 2014 02:00 (nine years ago) link

The one in Madison Square Park makes you wait an hour even if there's nobody else on line! It 's a branding thing. You get a free cronut with your meal though.

Xp steve, i went to the rittenhouse one. I'll definitely go to shake shack with you whenever, they have the Brooklyn IPA there right now as their seasonal and it's pretty good. I know you're not an ipa person though, they also have other really good beverage options

went to A Thing at some gallery tonight (lol I never do this) and heading home there was a Chipotle right fucking there and I joked about going there because I would never do that because I despise Chipotle. So I suggested going to Shake Shack even though it was a couple of blocks out of the way. But we headed there nevertheless but on the way were distracted by Trashy Mexican Food, Non-Chipotle and went there because that shit is a siren song to the husband. Should have done Shake Shake instead. But Trashy Mexican, Non-Chipotle is still miles better than fucking Chipotle why because decent margaritas at the very least.

I don't usually fuck with ice cream because apparently I hate america or something, but if I have to mess with it it's gonna be a coffee milkshake or a chocolate soda with peppermint ice cream. Both rather rare. I have yet to try a Shake Shack Shake but I'm gonna soon. Coffee, for sure. Malted sounds like a unusual but worthy plan, thanking u dayo

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Friday, 5 September 2014 02:20 (nine years ago) link

Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 5 September 2014 02:25 (nine years ago) link

I'm gonna try the burger again over the weekend tbh

, Friday, 5 September 2014 02:26 (nine years ago) link

As for Shake Shack, I challopically deny it is fundamentally different from e.g. Five Guys

Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 5 September 2014 02:26 (nine years ago) link

omg its soo much better and different than five guys

lag∞n, Friday, 5 September 2014 02:27 (nine years ago) link

Agree

, Friday, 5 September 2014 02:29 (nine years ago) link

five guys is good but its basically just a big sloppy burger with tons of toppings, shake shack is all abt the flavor of the meat and the meat grease and how it seeps into the bun, much more primordial burger tbqh

lag∞n, Friday, 5 September 2014 02:30 (nine years ago) link

Had Shake Shack on UWS of Manhattan in 2009, it was plenty good but I certainly wouldn't have said it stood out as, for lack of a better word, tasting like meat! In fact I would have described it exactly as "a big sloppy burger with tons of toppings." But that was a long time ago and they may well have perfected the formula between then and now!

Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 5 September 2014 02:42 (nine years ago) link

if I malt my milkshake it will taste like Whoppers and that is SO FUCKING GROSS imo

Gay Fire Beautiful Dong (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 5 September 2014 02:45 (nine years ago) link

shake shack is the real deal, they make an outstanding burger. the calorie count on a shackburger isnt completely outrageous; just dont get fries or, if you must, split them with a friend.

five guys isn't worth it on any level imo.

jamiesummerz, Friday, 5 September 2014 13:53 (nine years ago) link

I can't wait for the Chicago Shake Shack to open up. Got to try it when I was in Connecticut last summer and the burgers are so much better than Five Guys.

am0n, Friday, 5 September 2014 15:23 (nine years ago) link

The biggest problem with Five Guys is the all the goddamn SHOUTING the employees do. "ONE IN THE DOOR", "GOT IT", "TWO PATTIES", "GOT IT", "BYE YOU GUYS" (the last one shouted from the opposite corner of the restaurant as the door. It's fucking obnoxious.

k so we got drinks first at this weird cheap-feeling sushi place and they had $2 cocktails with cryptic names and we both ordered things with names that made no hint at their ingredients like Drunken Emperor and Sloppy Sensei and they tastes like things that moms served at Pampered Chef parties but they were $2

Then we went to Shake Shack and QUIZZO was happening so we ate burgers and did Quizzo and we tied for first but then lost the tiebreaker question bcz we only named 3 out of the top 10 most followed Twitter accts and then we slammed trays and cried and left

Also the food tasted good and fries were free bcz Quizzo promo

Atlanta got a Shake Shack a few months ago, but I hadn't even realized it until a coworker posted his review on fb today: "Not a shack. The burger and shake are middling attempts. This place thinks a lot of itself, but its basically a seasoned-down, tarted-up Five Guys with milk shakes. 4/10, will not return."

Johnny Fever, Friday, 2 January 2015 00:19 (nine years ago) link

Who's on board with the IPO?

calstars, Friday, 2 January 2015 00:20 (nine years ago) link

That new burger was always available to people who understand that you can basically do whatever you want with the menu, like ask for the shallots that were offered with the hot dog on the burger.

Most people who don't think much of the place order the shackburger with nothing on it which is not in fact all that great. You need to either order up to the mushroom or bacon versions or down to the cheeseless burger with everything else, and in either case order rare so that you're actually tasting the meat. Most people who think it compares unfavorably to Five Guys lack taste buds.

Banned on the Run (benbbag), Friday, 2 January 2015 00:28 (nine years ago) link

I think the Five Guys comparison was a knock. Atlanta has no shortage of good burger places at which to dine.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 2 January 2015 00:30 (nine years ago) link

lag∞n, Friday, 2 January 2015 00:38 (nine years ago) link

"I think the Five Guys comparison was a knock. Atlanta has no shortage of good burger places at which to dine."

As does any major city. That is not the category to which Shake Shack does, or pretends to, belong. However, it is at the top of the fast-food burger pyramid and the quality of its ingredients or combinations, when appropriately quality-controlled, can meet or exceed a non-fast food equivalent.

Banned on the Run (benbbag), Friday, 2 January 2015 00:41 (nine years ago) link

That said, I reserve it for special occasions these days. It may be good, but it isn't health food.

their fries could be so much better than they are. especially for what they cost and you only get a little handful.

I shared the fries and the custard though. I only ate like 1/2 an order of fries and 1/3 of
a custard.

never read this thread before; it is great. craving shake shack now. i told the students in my advisory to share a goal for the year with me at the beginning of the school year and explained it did not have to be an academic goal, "for example I have a goal of eating at Shake Shack more this year." i am doing abysmally at this goal tbh.

Shake Shack has breakfast?

IF (Terrorist) Yes, Explain (man alive), Monday, 8 January 2018 16:20 (six years ago) link

Their breakfast sandwiches use the same potato bun as their hamburgers. Not ideal imho

Lots of talk about stock price itt; stock now trading at less than half its peak, slightly below IPO value. Sort of strange because I do feel like it's kind of ubiquitous now, I was in a mall in Scottsdale and I saw one! Maybe people thought it could be much bigger and still profitable and they were just wrong?

There was a lot of talk about how it was way overvalued when it first started trading and it couldn't hit the growth needed to justify the valuation. Also, just anecdotally, yes, it is ubiquitious now, and it also seems unspecial and rarely super busy the way the old locations used to be. My whole theory about it to begin with (which seems to have proved correct) is that it was the kind of business that needed excitement and scarcity to thrive, like it was this "special treat" thing that people would go out of their way to stand in line for. Once it's everywhere, it loses that excitement, and then it doesn't really offer everyday foods you can eat for lunch at work and not feel like shit after.

Is anyone familiar w/ this place BurgerFi? Visiting family in Michigan and tried it, seems to be a Shack knockoff, similar design scheme (but w logo branded into top bun). Burger was alright. Good fries. They put sprinkles in my daughter's shake which I though was weird.

Biggest + was two veggie burger options (as opposed to the Shack's mere portobello choice) for my kids—a house made patty and one made by Beyond Meat—the pricey but convincing fake meat we sometimes use at home.....

i like eating shake shack for lunch. not heavy at all for a burger and for like $6 it's actually one of the cheapest things you can eat in manhattan. and if you use the app to order you can get in and out in like 2 mins.

two months pass...

I had the new chicken club thing a few weeks ago and thought it was delicious, that niman ranch bacon is tasty. But then tonight i had a burger at the fulton center location and it wasn't even good. And they fucked up my order, and the orders of the two guys who came to the pickup window at the same time as me. McDonald's double quarter pounder with cheese is probably half the price of the double shackburger and better imo.

Still love the chicken shak, but overall I like this place less each time I go. I was at the one in Hudson Yards after being stuck in the mall due to hard rain and having no other kid-friendly option. Cramped, crowded, miserable experience, touch screens that didn't work, inexplicably long wait for food, people behind the counter refused to give us trays to eat off of for some reason, and the burger and fries are just not that good. Generally speaking I find all the locations I've been to have been really uncomfortable places to sit and that the overall experience is just not pleasant.

A few months ago, I walked by a Shake Shack in suburban LA that was a completely empty at prime dinner time.

I've still only been to the OG like 15 years ago when it was at MSP/Flatiron and you had to wait in line for way too long. Can't even remember if it was any good or not.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 28 May 2019 21:08 (four years ago) link

man alive OTM
The longer each location is open, the more oily and greasy and disgusting the interior becomes, the effect of which is just compounded by the hoi pilloi clamoring for napkins and soda cups and annoyed at the wait for their food

calstars, Tuesday, 28 May 2019 23:49 (four years ago) link

one year passes...

I was a skeptic from the beginning as this thread shows, but always basically liked this place -- I'm with man alive, though, the last couple of times I've had their burger, it was just... not that great. Not bad! But not great. In particular, this from man alive

it was the kind of business that needed excitement and scarcity to thrive, like it was this "special treat" thing that people would go out of their way to stand in line for. Once it's everywhere, it loses that excitement

feels right to me, I enjoyed it more when they didn't have it in my local mall and it was an "I can have this because I'm traveling" treat.

Or maybe the food has actually gotten worse, which is not an unreasonable thing to expect for a rapidly expanding chain.

The shakes are still good.

I love Shake Shack and In'n'Out, but can't even imagine going to mobbed hamburger restaurants at this moment

Dan S, Monday, 7 December 2020 03:04 (three years ago) link

I mean, you order on the app, you pay on advance with your credit card, you're in there picking up the stuff for like 2 minutes, there's an indoor mask mandate where I live. If it were actually mobbed I might feel different but there were like four people in there.
