Neptune Bingo (Michael B), Thursday, 14 July 2016 16:11 (eight years ago) link

Watchmen is great.

Unbreakable is great fun.

Predator 2 was great and so was the Ice Cube album it inspired!

calzino, Thursday, 14 July 2016 21:08 (eight years ago) link

enjoyed watchmen the most out of those

Do people hate Snowpiercer? It was overrated, sure, and the allegory was heavy handed, but it was a genuinely batshit moviegoing experience. That scene with Alison Pill and the indoctrinating classroom is worth the price of admission by itself.

I love everything by Bong Joon-ho, apart from that one which I thought was terrible.

calzino, Thursday, 14 July 2016 21:17 (eight years ago) link

Unbreakable is one of the v best superhero movies; Willis is excellent in it.

Foster Twelvetrees (Ward Fowler), Thursday, 14 July 2016 21:23 (eight years ago) link

ive seen 5 of these and they were all crap. predator 2 is a travesty.

jim in vancouver, Thursday, 14 July 2016 21:25 (eight years ago) link

I liked The Bling Ring okay (but liked Palo Alto better).

clemenza, Thursday, 14 July 2016 21:47 (eight years ago) link

Predator 2 is lurid comic book fun. Sampled on a heap of jungle tunes too.

Neptune Bingo (Michael B), Thursday, 14 July 2016 23:36 (eight years ago) link

the bling ring is excellent.

so is silver linings playbook.

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 14 July 2016 23:39 (eight years ago) link

I liked Unbreakable the one time I saw it, I'm a fan of Freddy Got Fingered but would never recommend it to anyone, Silver Linings Playbook was terrible and only redeemed by its actors, the rest I haven't seen or haven't seen recently enough to remember.

Night Jorts (Old Lunch), Thursday, 14 July 2016 23:44 (eight years ago) link

Snowpiercer is easily the best thing on this list.
Unbreakable is kind of interesting but there are too many scenes that just feel like they drag on and on and get to the point already

El Tomboto, Thursday, 14 July 2016 23:55 (eight years ago) link

You maybe thinking of unbearable?

poor fiddy-less albion (darraghmac), Thursday, 14 July 2016 23:56 (eight years ago) link

Silver Linings Playbook was... actually too identifiable to my own life to dismiss as condescending Hollywood bullshit, but oh wait I'm now recalling the latter parts with the karaoke and yes burn the negatives and bury the ashes. Snowpiercer was fine. The Bling Ring was fine. DOTD remake was fine, as these things go. Never saw The Informers. Sorry, I don't really have anything constructive to add here. Maybe vote Snowpiercer, for what it's worth.

Jonathan Hellion Mumble, Friday, 15 July 2016 01:32 (eight years ago) link

I hate Snyder, but the opening section of his Dawn of the Dead remake is very well done. Film deteriorates rapidly once Sarah polley stops being the main focus, though.

I'm a fan of Freddy Got Fingered but would never recommend it to anyone

i need to see this movie immediately

flappy bird, Friday, 15 July 2016 06:05 (eight years ago) link

Freddy Got Fingered almost loops back round the awfulness spectrum, but sadly doesn't.

I quite liked Snowpiercer.

Unbreakable is a terrible film.

TARANTINO! (dog latin), Friday, 15 July 2016 08:45 (eight years ago) link

damn i forgot to include MACGRUBER

I think I was one of the naysayers but I would agree with this.

Have only seen a few of these. Voted DoTD remake, which was a blast in the theater IIRC. Nothing offensively bad about it unless you just resent the remake enterprise. Actually I feel like it was kinda the last remake before remakes became half of the movie calendar - closer to Gus Van Sant's Psycho than the recent Ghostbusters, Total Recall, Robocop etc... anyway it felt fresh and fun. In contrast, Watchmen was such a lavishly-executed misfire. The passing of time has only made it clearer that Snyder does not understand comics or superheroes, or even have a particularly interesting misunderstanding of them, and certainly he does not understand Watchmen. I also always felt that faithfulness to the source material was just a tremendous mistake - it should have been about the fascism and violence lurking in superhero movies the way the comic was about the same things in superhero comics. Frankly that also seems more do-able now than it did in 2009 - just more films to draw on, and more superficially "nice" looking heroes who could be placed under uncomfortable examination. But I guess it at least looks good, and it is some kind of achievement. Everything he's done since has looked like total garbage tbh.

Predator 2 is a slog at 108 minutes and IIRC there is some dumb racism with the gang war stuff. Get rid of that while trimming twenty minutes and I think it'd be an enjoyably dumb and goofy (if unnecessary) sequel. I feel the same way about Die Hard 2, from the same year, though Predator 2 has a more fun cast.

Loved Unbreakable on the first viewing; second time around felt like trying to chase that first high, it just doesn't work as well once you know everything that's going to happen. But I like it as a very slowly-unfolded take on the superhero origin story - I don't think there's another movie like it in this sense. Also thought all the Bruce Willis dad stuff felt very natural and convincing.

I actually really admire Sofia Coppola for only ever taking on upper class ennui. Maybe admire is too strong... I'm thankful she hasn't tried to patronisingly depict any culture in which she has never existed. I really liked The Bling Ring, but not as much as the widely-panned Marie Antoinette. I just love thinking about wealth.

Xp I think you should make your version of this

I don't have any problem with The Simpsons Movie, but my son's indefatigable love of rewatching it every day gets a bit much sometimes.

calzino, Sunday, 17 July 2016 16:47 (eight years ago) link

Yeah go do it wins. The Simpson Movie wasn't as bad as I was expecting it to be but it was still pretty bad

Neptune Bingo (Michael B), Sunday, 17 July 2016 16:50 (eight years ago) link

Weird. The vote button on Zing appears to be broken. That said, Snowpiercer rules and is by far the best option on this list.

yeah, voted snowpiercer (of the 3 I've seen)

I don't really love the Simpsons movie I just don't hate it as much as others seem to; I was pretty much a hater of (what I saw of) the series at that point and had a lot of goodwill towards (what I assumed was) the end of the franchise

wins, Sunday, 17 July 2016 20:57 (eight years ago) link

It was by no means the worst possible Simpsons movie, but it was just so deeply unnecessary, especially so deep into the show's life. So it kinda needed to be just wall-to-wall hysterical, a return to classic form, the secret ultimate project all the good writers have been working on for all this time while they let the show go to hell four times over. For it to be just a kinda adequate long-form episode of the show with a few particularly inspired lines was so underwhelming. If it had been the end of the show it would have at least had that going for it, like the Daria-goes-to-college special or the Tiny Toons direct-to-video summer vacation movie.

I still find it slightly scandalous that they made a film but didn't wrap up the series tbh

wins, Sunday, 17 July 2016 21:32 (eight years ago) link

The thing is the Simpsons has no 'story' which awaits conclusion anyway, the characters don't age (so you can't do "Bart goes off to college"), and it's not like a "will-they-or-won't-they" romantic sitcom or whatever where if you wanted to make the grand resolution into a movie instead of a long final episode, it would make some kind of sense. The Simpsons is "just a bunch of stuff that happened" and in fact the more of the show there is, the less any one story that tries to suddenly pile on Big Changes will feel commensurate to that accumulated material.
