THE RULES
Vote for 20 episodes from all four five of the canonical Star Trek TV series, yes that includes The Animated Series Enterprise (if you're that kind of Trekkie).

Multipart episodes bearing the same episode title like "The Best of Both Worlds" will count as a single entry (TNG's' ensusing "Family", however, will be considered separately). DS9's Final Arc, though connected, will be treated as discrete individuals.

I'm giving everyone a month, which probably isn't enough time to fully familiarize yourselves with a whole series outside of TOS, but I assume that we'll want to wrap this up sooner than later. With sufficient outcry, I am willing to extend the deadline, of course.

Scoring
1:40, 2:36, 3:33, 4:30, 5:28, 6:26, 7:25, 8:24, 9:23, 10:22, 11:21, 12:20, 13:19, 14:18, 15:17, 16:16, 17:15, 18:14, 19:13, 20:12

NOTE: Any Enterprise entries will count for double points, just to make things more competitive. (No, not really.)

Optional Side Polls
Rank the 5 Captains
5 favorite non-captain characters
5 favorite movies
5 favorite aliens
Ryker: Beard or No Beard?

Submit to:
All ballots sent to leeeee [at] gmail [dot] com (with "ILX Star Trek Poll" in the main subject if you please) will be assimilated into the collective results.

lol @ top image. can I vote if my ballot will be 90% tng?

chad valley of the shadow of death (ledge), Monday, 8 August 2016 08:04 (seven years ago) link

This would be my question, as well. I've watched the shit out of some TNG and all of the OG movies (and I've seen a smattering of everything else save Enterprise) but I'm otherwise largely Trekgnorant.

'Other Media' would be a cool side poll. I have read a couple of the novels, and everyone seems to rave about How Much For Just The Planet? as one of the best Trek-related things ever. But you're runnin' the poll so I trust your judgment.

Lyle Lovitz (Old Lunch), Monday, 8 August 2016 13:03 (seven years ago) link

I'd be pleased as punch if the results were dominated by TNG!

I've only read a couple novels, neither of which were the one OL mentioned. I could certainly add that as a side poll, but I wouldn't be able to vote in it myself!

Lyle Lovitz (Old Lunch), Monday, 8 August 2016 18:55 (seven years ago) link

Species. If you like Quark, you can vote for him individually.

Did they ever name the alien race that was trying to infiltrate Starfleet during s1 of TNG?

Looks like they're referred to as neural parasites: http://memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Neural_parasite_(24th_century)

By all means stan for your favourite TOS (or other) episodes. I had a binge a couple of months ago, watched 17 of them. Better than I was expecting, less corny! Still pretty corny though. Brawl ratio currently 10:17.

By my count, there are three categories that the Tribbles could take here.

Did Kirk ever boink a tribble or was that where he drew the line

Lyle Lovitz (Old Lunch), Monday, 8 August 2016 19:25 (seven years ago) link

I realise that it is an objectively bad film, but I hope that Star Trek V gets some votes. when I was seven years old the idea of them flying a spaceship to the centre of the universe and meeting god seemed like the most amazing thing. I watched it again as an adult a few years ago and the whole script seems like it was made up by a seven year old, which is maybe why it spoke to me so much at that age

soref, Monday, 8 August 2016 19:26 (seven years ago) link

Star Trek V is easily the worst ST thing I've been exposed to.

Lyle Lovitz (Old Lunch), Monday, 8 August 2016 20:02 (seven years ago) link

do you have a format preference for the episodes?

Do you mean something like "Episode Title" (series name) (in the event multiple series have episodes with the same title)?

Pleeesiosaur (Leee), Monday, 8 August 2016 20:17 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, or did you want like S05E08 or whatever

a simba man (Will M.), Monday, 8 August 2016 21:00 (seven years ago) link

le Histoire du Edgy Miley (difficult listening hour), Monday, 8 August 2016 22:18 (seven years ago) link

will get hi and choke up this and subsequent threads at some point but for now here's a block of advocacy from somewhere else:

"balance of terror" a big one for me despite its leaving out most of the usual star trek stuff in favor of what's basically a naval-combat drama. but its empathy for the romulans is very trek.

the diptych of s2's "a private little war" (allegory not for vietnam but for the self-exculpating american fantasy of vietnam; comes down on the side of the war but allows bones a furious dissent) and whatever that s3 one's called where the gas is making everybody hate each other (first line on return from commercial: "we must stop this war now") is pretty central

i love the colors and the kirk pauses in "the gamesters of triskelion" but the drag queen jokes are a drag

"the squire of gothos" a #1 contender imo -- weird, funny, has a nice after-school point to make about power and maturity, lots of fuck yeah kirk stuff. some people prob find the squire unwatchable tho.

spock character episodes always good: "amok time", "journey to babel", the one where he defects to the romulans.

"mirror mirror" the absolute peak of Goofy Trek, partly because it's not all goofy. evil spock -- so totally similar to good spock -- the scariest villain in the whole show. evil kirk on the other hand a hilarious idiot. spock's reply to "what is it you want, spock? power? i can get that for you, spock! I CAN GET THAT FOR YOU!" is nimoy's single best "fascinating."

whatever that s3 one's called where the gas is making everybody hate each other

(this is "day of the dove" btw and it's not really very interesting but i do still recommend "a private little war" which is a very vivid artifact. a piece of simplistic self-regarding propaganda with the weird decency to end in doubt.)

genuinely creepy one

le Histoire du Edgy Miley (difficult listening hour), Monday, 8 August 2016 22:33 (seven years ago) link

"devil in the dark" is often and rightly cited as an excellent one but it can prob be pretty boring for an initiate -- no crew outside of the main three, no enterprise stuff to speak of or possibly iirc at all, dramatic climax a scene where leonard nimoy presses dramatic claw-hands to a shuffling carpet draped over some stagehands and howls "PAIN!!!!". still v empathetic, v trek.

le Histoire du Edgy Miley (difficult listening hour), Monday, 8 August 2016 22:36 (seven years ago) link

it has a lot of my favorite Trek elements - classical allusions, characters being forced to act ridiculous, a couple genuinely moving monologues, a progressive groundbreaking TV moment, great supporting characters and of course it looks fantastic

xp

my favorite Trek elements - classical allusions

otm. soft spot for "who mourns for adonais?" (the One With The Hand) for this reason. whole premise of show obv pretty odyssey tho not i guess as odyssey as voyager.

le Histoire du Edgy Miley (difficult listening hour), Monday, 8 August 2016 22:40 (seven years ago) link

yeah that one's great, although Adonais is not quite as engaging a character as Alexander the Dwarf.

And, most of these I've not seen since 1968 or thereabouts.

The Hon. J. Piedmont Mumblethunder (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 10 August 2016 18:48 (seven years ago) link

"city on the edge of forever" is hugely overrated i think, slow and schmaltzy, plus afaict the point of it is that if there's a really important war on (they pretend they're talking about ww2, but uh) it's best to kill pacifists? spock's outfits are funny tho

"spock's brain" is camp, essential in its way but not recommended in the earnest way i recommend most of this.

"for the world is hollow and i have touched the sky" is downhill from its title imo, but that's a big hill.

"amok time" def great -- the most important kirk/spock bropisode (the smile), but also some great fantasy set design and space ritual. features the first appearance iirc of the lil vulcan meditation chamber in spock's otherwise federation-issue quarters which i think is so cool.

The Hon. J. Piedmont Mumblethunder (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 10 August 2016 20:38 (seven years ago) link

!!!

In 2008, IDW Publishing launched an Assignment: Earth five-issue comic book series written and drawn by John Byrne. The stories show the characters' lives from 1968 up to 1974, including Seven and Roberta's peripheral involvement in the events of a prior episode, "Tomorrow Is Yesterday" (occurring before "Assignment: Earth" for the Enterprise crew, but after for Seven and Roberta), and an epilogue set in 2008 depicts an annual reunion between Roberta and Isis (in her humanoid guise) at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to honor a friend who was killed in that conflict. The characters appear also in 2010 in issues #3 and #4 of Star Trek: Leonard McCoy Frontier Doctor.

Author Greg Cox has included Gary Seven and Roberta in three of his Star Trek novels, Assignment: Eternity and the two-part novel, The Eugenics Wars: The Rise and Fall of Khan Noonien Singh. In the latter two novels Gary Seven and Roberta Lincoln go on to eventually stop Khan Noonien Singh and his fellow genetically engineered humans from taking over the planet.

I heart TNG, but I've hardly watched any Enterprise, DS9 or Voyager. Always happy to get TOS recommends - I remember watching the whole series on BBC2 in the early nineties but I can't remember much except that The Menagerie seemed like the most interminable thing ever to a 13-year-old.

Recently watched the remastered Doomsday Machine on Netflix and that is fucking bonkers good.

Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 12 August 2016 11:42 (seven years ago) link

I'm ambivalent about the CGI inserts but the remastered interior scenes on TOS are just fucking beautiful to look at.

Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 12 August 2016 11:43 (seven years ago) link

CGI remastering is a tragedy of Lucasian proportions.

chad valley of the shadow of death (ledge), Friday, 12 August 2016 13:19 (seven years ago) link

It's pretty seamless (and often an improvement) on TNG, but the CGI ship on the original series looks wack.

(I believe the CGI effects shots were a necessary result of remastering, rather than Lucas-style "improvements". But some of them are pretty shit-looking nonetheless.)

Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 12 August 2016 14:04 (seven years ago) link

And, that said, the Doomsday Machine space dong on the remaster looks fucking groovy.

Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 12 August 2016 14:05 (seven years ago) link

Sharpening up the picture is one thing, but adding effects shots is totally misguided. Better to let these things remain of their time. Part of the fun of TOS is going back to the 60s.

the ciderpress guide to DS9 goes something like this:

Season 1:
Emissary
Progress
Duet

Season 2:
Necessary Evil
Whispers
The Maquis Pts. 1&2
The Wire
The Jem'Hadar

Season 3:
The Search Pts. 1&2
Civil Defense (this one is skippable i just find it stupidly entertaining)
Defiant
Past Tense Pts. 1&2
Destiny
Visionary
Improbable Cause
The Die is Cast
The Adversary

Season 4-7
Just watch everything at this point. you can skip the ferengi episodes if you dont like those (S6 "The Magnificent Ferengi" is really good though) and the holosuite eps if you don't like those (S7 "It's Only A Paper Moon" is the good one there imo) but there aren't too many stinkers otherwise

ciderpress, Wednesday, 24 August 2016 13:55 (seven years ago) link

Hey I like "Move Along Home", "If Wishes Were Horses", "Q-Less" (which is like a Mirror-Universe Doctor Who episode) from season 1!

those are the goofy ones, i like them too but most of the ppl i recommend trek episodes to want the more dramatic stories

Oh I would totally want the good goofy ones too. I mean, I even super enjoyed "Angel One"

well that's what *I* would say but other people have differing opinions. there are probably a handful of others that I think are either generally well-regarded or at least enjoyable via camp ridiculousness : The Immunity Syndrome, The Gamesters of Triskelion, Mudd's Women, I Mudd, etc. I also enjoy the Nazi/gangster/Roman planet ones altho I wouldn't say they are *great* exactly (they certainly established a trope that subsequent series returned to again and again)

I have no idea if Voyager or DS9 did this, I suspect Enterprise did but who has time to watch that garbage)

Millsner, Friday, 9 September 2016 14:46 (seven years ago) link

I just watched Yesterday's Enterprise, and it was *quite* as good as I remember, which is flummoxing.

What's deal re: deadline?

Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 9 September 2016 14:51 (seven years ago) link

whoops, I mean it wasn't quite as good

Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 9 September 2016 14:51 (seven years ago) link

I've been going through the TNG episodes I remember as being good + others recommended here - watched "The Game" last night, which was pretty good. Another deus ex machina ending that felt pretty abrupt, which is something I've noticed as a general problem with this series. There's a lot of slow buildup/scene setting and then oh hey problem solved by rerouting the dampeners phase blast coordinates through the temporal circuits or whatever and v little actual resolution/denouement. For ex., in The Game once Data shows up and frees everyone from the game, there's zero discussion of who the aliens behind this plot were or what their motives were or how the game actually worked it was just "hey problem solved! now let's have a scene where Wesley and Ashley Judd kiss THE END"

Still generally a fun episode. I am always down with a chase scene through the Jeffries' tubes.

Οὖτις, Friday, 9 September 2016 16:54 (seven years ago) link

similar thing happens with the Q episode where the Borg is introduced - crew spends 2/3rds of the episodes freaking out about the Borg when it all boils down to just Picard apologizing to Q in order to get him to snap his fingers and wave everything away in the last 5 minutes. Just a kind of weird pacing.

(speaking of Squire of Gothos upthread - lol that Trelane was retconned into being a member of the Q Continuum)

Οὖτις, Friday, 9 September 2016 16:56 (seven years ago) link

I can see and acknowledge that as a weakness. And then that's where DS9 started to shine when it had long strings of serialization, you really got that depth in the story.

Jeff, Friday, 9 September 2016 17:14 (seven years ago) link

Back to my list, I'm struggling at the bottom where I want to include my favorite Bev and O'Brien focused episodes. Like maybe they aren't in my top 20 of all time, but I want to give them proper representation.

Jeff, Friday, 9 September 2016 17:18 (seven years ago) link

watched Darmok last night. V good ep, I appreciated it's economy and it's sort of classic "what if?" conceptual SF story construction. I don't think the language-composed-entirely-of-analogies thing actually makes much sense (seeing as how the analogies were all still composed of conventional grammatical tools - verbs, nouns, etc.) but whatever.

I don't think the language-composed-entirely-of-analogies thing actually makes much sense (seeing as how the analogies were all still composed of conventional grammatical tools - verbs, nouns, etc.) but whatever.

the grammatical sentences we hear are meant to be an artifact of the struggling universal translator, right? so there's some unheard ~stream of images~ -- shaka, the walls, a certain time -- expressed according to who knows what rules, which the translator is grasping as images/ideas if not as metaphors and rendering in something like english. it just doesn't know who shaka is.

i could be wrong tho cuz i'm always confused about how the translator works. i mean their lips are always recognizably saying the english words, it never makes any sense. plus i mean that is Quite A Feat for a piece of software to be always performing on the fly w zero data to start with. really everyone should sound like darmok for the first few days.

iirc darmok is one of the first episodes featuring the rad captain jacket picard starts wearing in s5, love that jacket.

i'm a bad egg and did not make the deadline. working on it tho.

I'll do it, promise!

Anyone got any more good TOS/DS9/Voyager (or even Enterprise!) recommendations? Especially anything from DS9 that doesn't spoil the ongoing story.

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 13 September 2016 11:44 (seven years ago) link

Star Trek 101's Essential Episodes is a good news pace to start. http://memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Star_Trek_101#.22Ten_Essential_Episodes.22_feature

Some of the DS9 ones are part of the main arc though.

Jeff, Tuesday, 13 September 2016 12:23 (seven years ago) link

I suggest DS9's The Visitor and Far Beyond the Stars. Total one-offs, no arc.

Einstein, Kazanga, Sitar (abanana), Tuesday, 13 September 2016 12:33 (seven years ago) link

DS9 Past Tense is a fun 2 parter that's not part of the main arc. Also all the 'let's torture O'Brien' episodes (Whispers, Visionary, Hard Time)

for VOY I particularly liked:
Distant Origin
Living Witness
The Thaw

ciderpress, Tuesday, 13 September 2016 12:51 (seven years ago) link

I forget if Bride of Chaotica is fun or not. Second The Thaw though.

Weird fun DS9 that I liked:
The House of Quark / Looking for par'Mach in All the Wrong Places
The Lwaxana episodes
Visionary
Body Parts

write sed fread (Leee), Tuesday, 13 September 2016 16:32 (seven years ago) link

The Magnificent Ferengi is the best DS9 ferengi comic relief episode imo (feat. Iggy Pop as a Vorta!). the ferengi episodes have a pretty low hit rate but that one is fantastic.

i also like the one with the scene where Quark attempts to explain capitalism to the Prophets
