it's maybe the most inappropriate comedy on tv right now. the cocaine scene last week was out there.

dood he was the best part of pineapple express

cutty, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 01:09 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah he was hilarious in pineapple express, in tropic thunder... his character sucked so it wasn't his fault. the scene in last week's episode when he finds out that he's a chaperone was hilar

meme economist (special guest stars mark bronson), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 23:07 (fifteen years ago) link

liked him in Pineapple Express but I don't know about this...basically all through the first episode I kept thinking it was like the middle section of a Will Ferrell movie (the part where the comically unselfconscious and/or redneck athlete thinks his career is over before the big comeback at the end) before I even saw WF's name in the credits. dude seems capable of not jacking WF's schtick but obviously isn't concerned with trying not to.

big ban theory (some dude), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 23:11 (fifteen years ago) link

I like this more than The Fist Foot Way although i'm exactly not sure why. It's definitely not laugh out loud funny, but there's something there.

Number None, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 23:25 (fifteen years ago) link

oh yeah: when i rev'd fist foot way i didn't know about this project, and said something like 'feelin it; it's a bit like a pilot for a series tho'. but they could just as easily have made that situation the basis for a series, and made this one into a film.

Haven't watched the third episode yet, but so far it seems like the redneck version of Kath & Kim - more surreal discomfort than laugh-out-loud lolz.I keep waiting for Andy Daly to completely flip out...

the stevie janowski character has gotten more enjoyable. i couldn't take him at the beginning.

also the scene where he's walking down the hall pumping his hips and doing the pistol finger thing with music playing in slo mo and then it cuts to non-slomo, no music, everyone ignoring him, is still f'ing killing me

s1ocki, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 18:19 (fifteen years ago) link

the scene that kills me again and again:

sister in law is explaining how to use ebay and he asks her why she's helping him and she goes into this long bit about how she believes in helping family members because it bestows blessings on her blah blah blah
and he's playing with a pair of y-fronts all this time and interrupts her, holding the y-front open so that her face is visible through the hole and goes

"This is where my dick goes"

me = completely. destroyed.

yeah...i don't know what format the character would've worked in better (movie? sketches?) but i don't know if it's enough to support a half hour series...they stretched the premise so thin in 6 episodes that i was relieved they stopped there and gave it a nice little arc, more than that would've been overkill.

yrs truly did a big thing in a magazine on how it ISN'T that weird coz (eg) david o russell was in on 'anchorman' and what's-his-name wrote 'i now pronounce u chuck and larry' ETC.

though obviously it is pretty weird.

except terry malick's favourite film of the 00s is... zoolander.

FREE DOM AND ETHAN (special guest stars mark bronson), Monday, 13 April 2009 15:28 (fifteen years ago) link

'what's-his-name' = guy who did 'election'.

it's weird in the same way the altman guy who did 'magnolia' then did 'punch drunk love'; or that the guy who co-wrote 'the royal tenenbaums' then did 'starsky and hutch'.

FREE DOM AND ETHAN (special guest stars mark bronson), Monday, 13 April 2009 15:30 (fifteen years ago) link

not to impinge upon yr important magazine work but both david o russell and alexander payne have been making funny relatively big straightforward movies their whole careers while david gordon green was down south bootstrapping weirdo shit w/non actors

not quite true of dor, who was making documentaries about immigrant labour or whateverthefuck early on. and 'spanking the monkey' can't have been *much* bigger than 'george washington' rite?

but for purposes of the article, all three are 'sundance kids', to use the inherited discourse, with 'indie cred' but less well-known 'frat pack' connects.

this whole thing is hilare.

the intonation on 'just a man with a mind for victory and an arm like a fucking cannon' is amazing, the way he kind of slows down the last two words.

like the shape of the series, how the start of the fifth ep, following the end of the tape, sort of replays the start of the first, and now he's 'just an average man with execeptional hair'.

Another thing that the first season didn’t confront was religion in the South. I can’t believe how religious the South still is, but I think that was a good decision for the show. However, the premise you guys originally had for the fifth episode—and HBO didn’t go for it—involved Kenny going to church and Satanists. *laughs* Can you talk about that?

Jody Hill: *laughs* Yeah, well, we always had Casey, Dustin’s wife, as this religious character. And we had this entire religious episode where Clegg was kidnapped by devil worshipers, and Kenny had to go and get him back. *laughs* And the episode was going to be almost like an action movie, where Kenny and Clegg wake up and there’s all of this *séance* white chalk in their faces. *laughs* But we wanted the kind of devil worshipers in the South who wear baggy black raver clothes and are into Star Wars and stuff…*laughs*

i know this is ridiculous but i kept thinking that this is a classic post-cold-war tv show. the superpower is suddenly just a normal country in a multipolar world, with even pipsqueaks like afghanistan posing a challenge. and the only way to keep going is by pumping yourself up with a bunch of feel-good bullshit.

i've never seen tropic thunder or pineapple express so danny mcbride is a whole new thing for me. wow. his steez is so real. i know several guys like that, or who wish they were like that. will ferrell came off like a goddamn amateur in the scene they had together.

i watched a couple more of these and my opinion has soured. it's really just incredibly thinly written. if there's a plot point or a character is struggling with something, well, you can bet the writers are going to hammer-drill it into your brain about 5000 times in time-honored apatow/snl fashion. at first i was like "wow gina gershon, awesome!" and then what happens with her? nothing. and kenny's "fuck buddy" - the writers don't allow her any reality, they just rub her nose in how awful she's supposed to be. it's like some kind of iron man competition to see who's capable of rising above the shitty material to actually seem real.

s1ocki i'm not talking about some cliche hack move to show "depth" i would just like to have stayed with gina gershon and the beguiling class friction that was developing between the powers bros and her instead of racing off to a "pitch off" (nb. a term i have never heard but wouldn't that be a battle between pitchers?). likewise i would have liked to see fuckbuddy put kenny in his place once or twice, or least be allowed to be funny. likewise has it not occurred to anyone in the writing team that stalking your large betitted high school sweetheart is about 1% sweet and about 99% lame as all hell? oh i know i know - our hero is the man child and his myopic whims must be nurtured as a virgin lily. whatever. i wonder if will ferrell's got a script lined up about an aging comic whose schtick has gotten so tired after repeating himself too often that he starts pitching tv series which are just padded season-long versions of his movies but they don't get renewed... and then... he comes back... to prove to himself if to no one else... that he still has what it takes...

Tracer Hand, Friday, 25 September 2009 23:17 (fourteen years ago) link

A polar bear you can see in a snowstorm (rockapads), Friday, 25 September 2009 23:25 (fourteen years ago) link

the fuckbuddy character has plenty of funny moments - you really wanted to see her stand up to kenny and tell him what's what?!

fountain bleaut (s1ocki), Friday, 25 September 2009 23:30 (fourteen years ago) link

likewise has it not occurred to anyone in the writing team that stalking your large betitted high school sweetheart is about 1% sweet and about 99% lame as all hell?

it's... supposed to be... pretty lame.

fountain bleaut (s1ocki), Friday, 25 September 2009 23:31 (fourteen years ago) link

there were a few things about the show that didn't sit real well with me.

like, i don't mind if the characters have some backwards ideas about sexual relations - they weren't supposed to be enlightened individuals in any way, but the way the camera lingered on her melons throughout the show - even when he first started trying to get her back and was kind of creepy and aggressive about it - convinced me that the writers were just as complicate as the characters, and that I as a viewer was supposed to be, too. no reason was ever really given for why he liked her except that he lusted for her body, so it rang kind of false when he suddenly cared so much for her toward the end. kind of undermined that whole aspect of the show.

possible spoilers follow...
...
..
.
the other thing that bugged me, and i am probably totally over-analyzing it, was that the only non-white character to get any kind of significant screen time was the black baseball player, played by the always awesome Craig Robinson, who ends up an antagonist who gets sonned in the worst kind of way. What a waste of a funny actor, too. When they first introduced him, I was really hoping he would end up one of Powers' fuck-up friends.

yeah they make sure you know kenny's a bonehead but i don't see any signals that his thing for her is supposed to be lame. or that she's supposed to be lame which she pretty much is. i mean the show's 100% invested in kenny's thing for this DRIP.

i'm just sick of every wedding crashers/whatever modern bromatic comedy plot where the hero's unquenchable love for the already-taken lady is some inviolate truth in the middle of everything regardless of how certifiably lame the girl in question is. it would be instantly five thousand percent better to have april at least be sort of a ditz. or have a personality at all actually!

it would also be five thousand percent better if she had awesome, fridge-rattling sex with the principal.

calvin the show seems to be totally unaware that the romantic lead is a drip and that kenny's fixtion with her is lame, i.e. it sends no "signals" to this effect. therefore i did not figure it out. because the show depends on us taking kenny and april seriously as a possible item. like for instance, when kenny's in the bar talking to someone off-camera that it's time to take it to the next level and settle down the big punchline is that he's talking to the skank ho. haha wooo. my contention - and i fully realize this is "imagine the show i wish existed rather than the show as it is" territory - is that the show would have been 5000 times better if it turned out he was actually talking to april. she either says "kenny what in the fuck are you talkin about" or she says "i'm sorry were you talkin?" although like i said the show depends on us taking it seriously so we can't do that. i think it gets in the way of the interesting stuff - i.e. the stuff with gina gershon, i.e. the stuff at school (do we ever actually see kenny relating to any kids? doing his actual job? i'd a million times rather see that than another insipid romantic comedy rerun).

also relax dudes i wouldn't be talking about the show this much if it wasn't interesting in a few big ways.

she's not a drip – she's pretty much retarded. as in the pitch-off scene when kenny knocking craig robinson's eye out meets with her approval.

in terms of making the right choices, that episodes with kenny saying "i will never pick up a baseball. ever. fucking. again." and then well uh...

what mark s said about "white lightnin" in sight and sound applies here too i think:

your attention is entirely dragged away from the world you're being called to be astounded by or sympathetically caught up in -- the degradation and delusions, the spirit and capabilities of white American working-class life ... back towards the well-trod stunt skills (and aesthetic self-regard) of people we already probably know too much about; a parade of the established sensibilities, techniques and values that already clog up the cultural space this is (supposed to be) a contrast with.

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 27 September 2009 21:36 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm holding out for it though.. i think the premise is holding it back - will he or won't he make it back to the bigs; will he or won't he come to terms with the answer - and once they get away from that it might settle into something more like my dream show

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 27 September 2009 22:06 (fourteen years ago) link

isn't white lightnin' a horror movie? i haven't seen it, so can't really parse mark's piece. if we already know what the degadations etc. of white american working-class life *are*, as mark does, then im not entirely sure who it is we know too much about – whose aesthetic self-regard.

and im not sure to whom the 'aesthetic self-regard' bit refers w/r/t this series – "just an average guy, with exceptional hair", maybe.

who in eb&d do we already know too much about? what cultural space does its makers proposing it as a contrast to?

idk, im not looking for reasons not to like something!

The A.V. Club: Are you following the British-TV formula again this season for your episode count?

Danny McBride: Yeah, we follow the same formula. We liked how many episodes there were of The Office, Spaced, Alan Partridge, a lot of the British shows that we found we like. As fans, we like to watch multiple episodes, week after week, but as the creators… It’s really just written by Jody [Hill, co-creator], myself, and another writer, Shawn Harwell. We chose seven this year. That was about how many we felt like we needed to get our story across this year, and how many we felt like we could comfortably write without having to start to farm the work out to other people. It was important for us to have our hands on every part of the script.

danny mcbride is awesome obviously but god almighty i am tired of this mode of ferrell-esque storytelling where the main character is Really Good at Something, runs away from it, hits rock bottom, then has an epiphany (which is both mocked AND heavily leaned on to provide an emotional charge) and returns to glory - if not as successfully as before, then at least it's making him happy. this is the plot of Elf, of Anchorman, etc etc

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 30 September 2010 12:21 (thirteen years ago) link

at bottom it's an incredibly conservative worldview, i.e. you can't - and probably shouldn't - run away from your Authentic Self. this show is conservative in other respects too, i.e. the corny gentle family scene around the table which we are supposed to be in awe of or something. i guess that's mexico though - it's either crazy assholes or soulful natives with whom one can reconnect to the Authentic Vibes that Matter

i mean the family that he sat down and had a soulful dinner with, who helped him wash off his burro and remind him who he was

(i have only seen ep1)

btw i DID notice that he didn't return to glory but "if not as successfully as before, then at least it's making him happy"

i just wish this show didn't have to have these moments-of-shit™ that are both played for laughs and actually relied on to provide narrative heft. but without these there's actually nothing happening. still big <3 for danny mcbride though

everyone runs to 2 1/2 men.

cliché or not, it worked for me. everybody reacts to Kenny with anger, befuddlement, or supportive acceptance of his character flaws. it was a nice change of pace to have him interact with someone similar to himself, and see how he reacts (sometimes one-upmanship, sometimes impressed by bullshit). I'm glad it only lasted for one episode, but it worked within the context of the show.

Pretty sit-com-y, but a promising set-up for the season nonetheless.

Loved the exchange:
April: "Who do you think he looks more like? You or me?"
Kenny: "He looks like the fuckin' guy from The Shield. Chiklits."

I haven't been to Myrtle Beach in several years, but that's 100% how I remember it.

Also, this show has the best music of any TV show ever. JJ Cale, Lee Hazlewood, The Strangeloves, ESG - all in one episode!!!!

Just got on this lately, funny stuff. So many great characters. I like how it has short seasons, it means there are no filler episodes, and each season is forced to have a tight story arc. Amazing production values for a sitcom.

The second episode of the season was the most surreal stuff that's ever been on the show. I wonder if Will Ferrell's presence steers those guys in that direction? The eps that he's in tend to be the ones where everything gets slightly more cartoonish.

I thought the second episode got demonstrably less funny every time Will Ferrell came on-screen. I like him, typically, but I thought he sucked the fun out of that episode, until the final scene anyway.

first ep was great, second not so good, not seen third yet. i find the small moments in it more funny than a lot of the big setpieces, eg when he was leaving april the message and said "it is i, kenny powers". the will ferrell character really isn't funny to me though, i like ferrell generally but i just don't find that character well fleshed out by any means. it's very vague, even his clothes etc just confuse it more.

Yeah, I love the little language quirks they give Kenny, which he somehow sells - e.g. when he visits the grieving family and says "we're all in mourning, so we should crack some beers and watch some High Definition Blu Rays."

I was dying at him playing the Candlebox song on the Sony sports boombox at the funeral. The music supervisors (or is it just David Gordon Green? He always has great music in his stuff) get it so right (Morbius' comment still makes me laugh).

chapter six: fucking making straight up decisions now, dude. as my epic comeback nears its zenith, I can't help but look back at the low times when there was no hope or light. there's an old expression that's got at me through the dark valleys and hazy cul-de-sacs of life: nut up or sack up. it means when life gets you all swirly and thought-ridden, shut it out. let the two spherical sperm factories underneath your dick take over. they don't think, they don't get confused. they churn and attack. and in moments of doubt, my default setting is always to attack, whether it be a hitter or an ump or a loved one who has stepped out of line. not everyone can achieve their dreams in this world. that's because most people have things like feelings and sentimental attachments, nagging shit that keeps them from making the tough decisions that are necessary to get to the ultimate top. unfortunately, in the rocket ship of fame there's only room for one. any added baggage will just weigh you down, hold you back from shooting for the fucking stars. blast off bitch.

one month passes...

Just watched the whole run of this show for the first time. Pretty good, but I'm not 100% sure I get it. Some of KP's speeches are funny, lots of the serious moments and stuff are genuinely touching.

But then you have Will Ferrel stepping in and just being obnoxious. I'm sorry, I just really have grown to loathe him. He's not funny, he just gets by on silly voices and calculated wackiness. He's a bullshit unfunny comedy mogul like Adam Sandler, only maybe more pretentious.

This show was fun to watch, but it felt like it really had a lot of ideas packed into a short space. The tone would be serious and genuinely affecting, meaningful montages happening, and then we'd be stuck watching Ferrel pull out some dusty sub-SNL southern redneck stereotype, requisite gross-out humor intact.

Kind of wish KP had stayed in Mexico a little longer and developed with the team down there (the coach there was my favorite character), and I kind of wish there was more reality calling him out for basically acting like a spoiled baby. But yeah I guess that's the point, he's sort of an anti-hero. A huge baby who always goes on about how big a man he is but can't handle anything. The very last episode at least redeemed the character.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 25 May 2012 06:19 (eleven years ago) link

I read an interview with McBride where he talked about Jody Hill and David Gordon Green having such different styles, that they would just write to fit their strengths (or something to that effect), which is there can be some tonal differences (i.e. Ferrell's rich buddies firing cannons at KP).

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Friday, 25 May 2012 06:28 (eleven years ago) link

Also that stupid wig WF had on. It was a "Look at how wacky I am wearing this wig!" wig.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 25 May 2012 06:42 (eleven years ago) link

Prob hard for the writers to say no to Ferrell though, being a producer and all.

I agree that his style of comedy (over the top, overplaying) is at odds with McBride, who tended to truly inhabit the soul of KP.

I love this show so, so much, but I feel like they nailed it with the end of Season 3.

I really don't like that @kfuckingp Twitter account - I seem to remember that some fan dude started the account and quickly picked up a shitload of followers, and then he was reluctantly allowed to carry on. Whoever runs it seems to use it to either sell stuff, try to creepily get freebies, or to just generally not really get the humor that makes the show work at all. Maybe that's not the case anymore, but it's just kind of a bummer.

Walter Galt, Tuesday, 3 July 2012 14:11 (eleven years ago) link

there's just something about the way danny mcbride is so totally present in the role of KP... like even just watching him dance in slow-mo or catching a brief closeup of his facial expressions during April's acceptance speech-- he plays KP so fully and artfully, its a level of performance that's so rare in comedy IMO

I go a little overboard with this stuff, but I think this series of the show has evened out the hit-and-miss stuff from previous seasons (the occasional frat-guy bro-isms of S1, the slightly forced surreality of S2, the darker plot-heavy stuff of S3, and - yes - the often-way-too-broad Will Ferrell stuff) into the best examination of class and race on TV since, hell, The Wire. It plays with fire sometimes (and I'm uncomfortable with the unavoidable fact that a big chunk of the audience is laughing *with* Kenny when he says something horrifically racist), but the characterizations are so unbelievably rich in this thing. I think it's full-on high art.

LOS ANGELES, May 28, 2014 – Danny McBride, star of the hit HBO comedy
series “Eastbound & Down,” will return to the network in the comedy series VICE
PRINCIPALS, it was announced today by Michael Lombardo, president, HBO
Programming. The show is slated for 18 episodes, with the debut date and number of
episodes per season to be announced as they are confirmed.
“Danny McBride and Jody Hill have created a smart, rowdy and unpredictable style
of comedy that we can’t get enough of,” said Lombardo. “The idea of them setting their
minds on high school was irresistible.”
“HBO was the perfect creative family for ‘Eastbound & Down,’ and we’re excited to
pack up the van for the next adventure,” notes McBride.
“When the idea for the new series became too crazy to keep to ourselves, we
knew HBO was the perfect place to unleash it,” says executive producer David Gordon
Green.
Created by Danny McBride and Jody Hill, who were also the creators of
“Eastbound & Down,” VICE PRINCIPALS tells the story of a high school and the people
who almost run it, the vice principals.
Concluding its four-season run on HBO in 2013, “Eastbound & Down” starred
McBride as irrepressible former major league pitcher Kenny Powers.
VICE PRINCIPALS is executive produced by Danny McBride, Jody Hill, David Gordon Green and Stephanie Laing, who were also executive producers of “Eastbound &
Down.”

Immediate Follower (NA), Wednesday, 28 May 2014 20:43 (nine years ago) link

not yet. doesn't really bother me tbh. Feel like Observe & Report role should've been his too.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 21:01 (nine years ago) link

Yeah I'm fine with him just doing his thing. I can't really imagine him being good at much else. Even at the beginning of the last season of Eastbound where he was the mild-mannered family man, it didn't really work.

Immediate Follower (NA), Wednesday, 28 May 2014 21:03 (nine years ago) link

i disagree, when a DMcB character attempts to behave against type, thats some of the best DMcB

rage against martin sheen (sic), Wednesday, 28 May 2014 22:52 (nine years ago) link

I meant he should've had the lead, if that wasn't clear. I forgot he does have a bit part

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 22:54 (nine years ago) link

he was originally going to be the cop iirc but then something came up (tropic thunder i guess) and he wasn't able to do a part that big

balls, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 23:03 (nine years ago) link

He's in the Franco version of As I Lay Dying which I imagine might be slightly outside his comfort zone. Not that I'll ever watch it

Love danny

calstars, Thursday, 29 May 2014 02:01 (nine years ago) link

weird reading all the nitpicky 'this episode isn't as good as the last one but the one after is 10% better' stuff above. just watched the whole thing and it all worked as a piece. midway through s1 hit amazing heights and pretty much stayed there til the end. couple of blips with the bizarro will ferrel/geisha thing and ali g's dismal performance in the last ep but 99% flat-out brilliance.

a pox on anyone who dissed the music too, greatest use ever.

NI, Tuesday, 10 June 2014 17:26 (nine years ago) link

my qu though, how much of danny's performance was improvised? some of it seemed so natural and off-the-cuff it *had* to be. and not in that wearying CYE way where it ends up with two people shouting at each other for way-too-long while trying to hide their smirks.

NI, Tuesday, 10 June 2014 17:28 (nine years ago) link

outtakes seem to indicate quite a lot of the dialogue was improvised

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 10 June 2014 17:30 (nine years ago) link

I don't know if I ever posted about this on ILX but I befriended a temp at my old job who once told me (TOTALLY UNSOLICITED that her husband liked to fuck her from behind while wearing a Jason mask and positioned in front of a mirror so they could both watch).

I caught a part of the movie where all the apatow dudes are in franco's house during Armageddon recently and was reminded of just how much I love McBride. I mean, sure, he sort of always plays the same dude (give or take a couple variations) but he plays that dude so well that I can't help but love him.

finally got around to this on Prime. first few episodes were grating but I'm glad I read the thread and stuck with it cos it's had me howling since. Kenny popping out the dude's eye. Kenny Powers 'freestyling' on his girlfriend's track. Steve making awkward jizz sound effects, "that's your dick, buttfucking her". Kenny coming onto the field riding a fuckin' donkey.

he played a similar character on the much less funny The Grinder, seems to be his niche.

when he was throwing out gangster lingo in Season 1 was also hilarious. I feel like everybody knows a dude like this that they've tried to put out of their memory.

For Mr. McBride’s slick, bowtie-clad nemesis, Lee Russell, the creators turned to Mr. Goggins, a star of “Justified,” “The Shield” and “The Hateful Eight,” who had once auditioned for an “Eastbound & Down” role that went to Jason Sudeikis of “Saturday Night Live.”

(As Mr. Goggins recalled of that encounter: “I got to the meeting, and it was me and five ex-‘S.N.L.’ guys. What am I doing here, really?”)
