it's kinda like that bit where Chappelle talks about something being so blatantly racist, you don't even get mad, it's like it didn't even happen, like it was in a movie...that.

Gedde Watanabe is kind of a hero for owning the stereotyping done here, though. Hughes was probably like "sorry, this role is offensive, but the pay is good" and Watanabe pulled it off like a champ.

i couldn't adjust the food knobs (Phil D.), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 12:14 (twelve years ago) link

The last time this was brought up on ILX, I think someone posted a link to an article by an Asian-American writer with a detailed decription of how the image Long Duk Dong affected the way he was treated as teenager (similar to the Adrian Tomine comic). I remember the writer mentioning that before LDD, the stereotypical image of Asian guys was Bruce Lee, but at least Lee was a badass kung fu guy, so Long Duk Dong replacing him was actually a turn for the worse. Can anyone locate that article, I thought it was a good reading on this subject?

didn't know there was a remake. original came to mind after people were talking about john hughes' terror @ inner-city black people. precinct 13 seems like it comes from the mind of someone who's never been in a city and thinks that black people are all sociopathic sadists who will kill your innocent white daughter as she eats her ice cream cone.

I was a teenager in the 80's and I didn't much like Hughes movies. I know that sets me out of the norm but they all seemed so tedious to me.

I like Tomine's take on the character. If the humor had been at all subversive or insightful, it might have been slightly more palatable. Instead, we have a lucky generic Asian who gets to learn from suburban white ppl how to hang out in trees or whatever.

the "strange/backwards eastern european" comedy character runs way back (Chico Marx, Yakov Smirnoff, etc), it's an old ethnic stereotype and it's not like Borat did anything that inventive with it, he just upped the gross-out factor. that people though Borat was THE GREATEST COMEDY EVER for some reason was just sad.

I went to high school with someone who was legitimately named D** D****. In retrospect, given that his whole family were the first and only Vietnamese people anyone in Whitehall had ever met (and probably the only ones some people WOULD ever meet), I wonder whether they were more affected by stereotypes like LDD or whether everyone else was just so flummoxed by having a whole family of non-adopted Asian people as neighbors that it never came up.

Leonard "Chico" Marx (March 22, 1887 – October 11, 1961) was an American comedian and film star as part of the Marx Brothers. His persona in the act was that of a dim-witted albeit crafty con artist, seemingly of rural Italian origin, who wore shabby clothes, and sported a curly-haired wig and Tyrolean hat

Tom D (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 16:49 (twelve years ago) link

Chico's ethnicity was always indeterminate, which was part of the joke. My larger point was that the stereotype of a strange European immigrant is really common in comedy, and acting like the character is not based on an essentially racist premise is just wrong. see also: Cozen Larry, Latka, etc. we went over this on the main Borat thread.

The Silent Extreme (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 16:51 (twelve years ago) link

Borat is a lot more complex than a simple caricature like Long Duk Dong. Although Borat is constructed from elements of stereotype and caricature, there's an ambiguity about exactly who he represents. More importantly, he's not the butt of the jokes - the "normal" people he interacts with are. Also, the audience is always in on the joke that Borat is a constructed character - so there's an element of distance from the stereotypes. A lot of the humor is watching people react in a stereotypical way to something we know is a ruse.

o. nate, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 16:54 (twelve years ago) link

'generic Asian'

I meant non-specified in terms of country.

There's plenty of anti-Italian humor in 30's films, btw. 'Top Hat' for example.

More importantly, he's not the butt of the jokes - the "normal" people he interacts with are.

What makes me uncomfortable about both characters isn't that kind of racist stereotype that says 'X ppl are like this' it's the condescending view that an attempt at versimilitude of any kind is pointless and the audience neither knows nor is curious about a credible Chinese or Kazak character as long as they're funny in a 'quirky' way.

that people though Borat was THE GREATEST COMEDY EVER for some reason was just sad.

I found a lot of stuff very questionable about the movie and hate the way it was explained by the people who loved the it - like, when he's doing the "manners training" and he brings the hooker, a lot of the glowing reviews said "watch as Borat exposes a group of Southern people to a black woman and see how horrified they are, aren't they terrible racists" when it's like, you bring in a white woman dressed like that and you'll get the exact same reaction, shut the fuck up, it's clear that the movie wasn't about exposing anything. Bruno is the same way, I hate when people say things like "look how Sacha Baron Cohen is exposing America's homophobia!" when you could almost argue that it's worse to NOT be offended by his behavior.

the only point of those movies is to be funny, and to be honest I laughed a lot at both

how is "targeting mega-drunk girls for sex" not mega-date rape

and the movie portrays it like normal acceptable male behavior which is only deterred because of a comical amount of vomit. even if carrell's character wouldn't have gone through with it (which i believe) it still normalizes date rape through the other three characters that were pushing him to do it. i can believe that apatow and co were following the status quo of not knowing that date rape doesn't always involve roofies, but that doesn't make it any better

um, pointing out a guy's race is pretty much the racism game for sure

The plot of the first Harold and Kumar movie, outside of their quest for sliders, was an examination of what it means to be Asian-American! It was all about the expectations Kumar's dad had for him to live up to as kind of a cultural signpost, Harold being the guy who gets shit on at work because he's a conscientious worker, the interaction with the Asian student club that they run into at the school...

They did consciously cast them as specifically Indian and Chinese, though, and their charcaters are written true to certain stereotypical notions so it may be less the distributors as the whole enterprise that has a whiff of racism about it not that Kumar's whole scene imagining living with his bag of weed and NPH didn't kind of redeem that for me.

believe it or not there are reasons to point out a guy's race that do not revolve around "race hate"

the joke there wasn't that they were being racist, the joke was that neither of the leads had a recognizable starring role and that at the time more people would know who you were talking about if you said "The Indian guy from Van Wilder" instead of "Kal Penn"

nah (crüt), Wednesday, 11 January 2012 19:29 (twelve years ago) link

Well, yeah, because Kal Penn had played a pretty bad stereotype in that film! The premise was pretty much "here are these dudes who have either been undercast due to race (Harold) or cast as a bad stereotype (Kumar) in a film where they are, in fact, a Korean-American and Indian-American and deal with what those roles often mean."

I agree there are reasons to point out race that aren't racist, but the premise of the film pretty much made their ethnic backgrounds a real thing, not a crazy stereotype. The ad campaign is racist, but kind of ironically?

mh, Wednesday, 11 January 2012 19:33 (twelve years ago) link

So back to my horrible Farrely brothers point: this movie I watched because I was lazy had an honest-to-god moment where Owen Wilson's character is saved from a hot tub he fell asleep in by two naked dudes who run out of a sauna, and there is a "lol black guy has a huge penis, Irish man has a tiny one" joke

I remember being called on the glaring racism a few years later when professing my Hughes-love to a more politically astute college acquaintance and struggling to justify it as "ironic" or some such bullshit. The magnet school I went to was a factory! They finally did a lot of renovations in the last few years that make it look a little less so, but it was originally a Ford factory, then a small aircraft factory before later becoming the technical high school in the 60s.

Haha, the high school was a two-story wing about 100' long. The grade school (K-6) was your fairly typical one-story brick school building. The junior high wing was basically a hallway connecting the two, with classrooms along one side.

My school was all one building, and it covered K-12.

My school was like that, except it was two large buildings next to each other on a big plot of land. The year I graduated they added a third across the street.

Mine was one of the largest - in terms of physical space, not number of students - in the country (I've heard it's in the top 5). It was built for 6000 students, though that had dipped to around 3000 when I was there. 6 gyms, 2 pools, 4 cafeterias, a field house, an auditorium, and two additional theaters.

It really is a bit of an 80s "had to be there" thing, I think. At least I think so? younger ppl I know never seem to get into it.

I always envied that schools in other countries had cafeterias! We just had a "tuckshop" - a shed out of which they sold crap like meat pies, samdwiches and drinks, and you had to sit out in the concrete playground rain, hail, snow or (40+degC) shine.

...I went home for lunch every day instead.

tbf the response I'm seeing to a couple people name calling is typically to be cryptically sarcastic and then treat ilx like you don't care what anyone thinks for another day or so

mh, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 15:34 (twelve years ago) link

i'm not going to pretend like i don't care, rather a little shocked at the kind of logical fallacies that normally smart posters succumb to when talking about an issue that's even a little controversial

frogs you are the dumbest asshole (frogbs), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 15:36 (twelve years ago) link

Could you explain this fallacy?

mh, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 15:39 (twelve years ago) link

I think what you're not getting is that we don't have to have group consensus or bully someone into being right or wrong

like, the people who find this shit funny aren't really posting to the thread, but they obviously are on ilx for some reason or another

So if you're perpetually getting said "hey, no one speaking hereis buying your arguments and we do find this offensive" then explaining to someone why it isn't offensive, when they obviously have the right to be offended, isn't going to go anywhere

to be fair, the only way I get along is by not posting on threads that are heated where I have a strong opinion, because it doesn't help me OR the discussion most of the time. and if I feel genuinely underqualified, as white midwestern dude who has asian friends but no huge personal stake, I'm going to let it go

for instance, dayo and aero are pretty cool dudes imo and they have a personal stake here, so even if I did find this shit funny, I'd be seriously asking myself why, or at least not be outright saying "HEY PEOPLE FIND THIS FUNNY" because I respect them

tinker tailor soldier sb (silby), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 15:46 (twelve years ago) link

Well the thing I was trying to hammer home over and over is that I do believe it's offensive and in bad taste, and that's part of what makes it funny TO SOME PEOPLE. In the case of this character, I found the fact that somebody would think that he's typical of anything to be funnier than the character itself, but also, that yes, I laughed at a few of his lines (and would have even if the character was a space alien), and that yes I didn't really feel good about it, but using that to make sweeping generalizations on MY character is stupid. I have a personal stake in a lot of race issues too but IMO that only loosely applies here and I think I tend to give people a lot more credit. I get the "I have Asian kids, you shouldn't laugh at Asian stereotypes" argument, but when it turns into "you're a shitty person for laughing at this who obviously has some deep seeded racist beliefs" when I grew up with a ton of Asian people, none of whom were anything like this character, then yeah I'm going to get all uppity about it. If you asked me "could you go back in time and destroy this film", yeah, I would.

I have a lot of sympathy for comedians like Ken Jeong who get shit for playing clowns because, wtf, it's really fun to play a clown and why should they not be allowed to just because of their race. Like only white comedians should be allowed to play lunatics? The problem is when the joke is "lol asian" rather than "lol lunatic" and while I think the line is blurred in something like the hangover, John Hughes adding gongs to every long duk dong scene makes it considerably less blurry in sixteen candles.

The cultural influence of Sixteen Candles is obviously toxic, but one wouldn't have to change much to just make the guy an eager foreign student on a drunken rampage (and as an MBA student I've witnessed some), which one can find the humor and truth in without stripping the character of dignity entirely (and tbh, few characters in sixteen candles have any dignity - surprised the word "bohunk" hasn't come up yet). There's elements of Wantanabe's performance I love that aren't that different than something like McLovin in Superbad, and it's sad that for a variety of reasons that were either out of his hands or he was naive about, they're couched in stuff that's really ugly.

TS: the racist kid in Sixteen Candles who says the mom should burn the sheets after Dong leaves vs. the racist kid in The Last Dragon who calls his older brother a "chocolate covered yellow peril."

I think I remember that's how it went down. The thing that gets me is Jake basically said "Lol have fun doing whatever you want to my passed out girlfriend!" which in the movie was supposed to be okay because she was a bitch.

jake hands ted a six-pack before they drive off! he wants both of them drunk! the whole thing is a set-up so he has a reason to break up with caroline, which is exactly what happens, is how i read it.

also i am awful suspicious of jake's intentions towards sam. he frames the differences between sam and caroline in terms of caroline's insensitivity and selfishness vs. wanting a serious girlfriend who would love him and whom he could love, etc., but all he really knows about sam is from the note he read where she says she's a virgin but would do it with him. no way he's not considering that through the rest of the movie. he actually knows nothing about her from a personal point of view. plus, there are about ten or so repeated instances in the movie where sam is referred to as a child, or physically less developed than caroline, who has a woman's body (cf the nude shower scene) and is sexually active (which jake is bored with already). so it seems there's a maiden/ mother archetype subtext to the whole thing. sam's even wearing her bridesMAID's dress in the final scene where they kiss. ostensibly it's framed that while he should prefer the more womanly, sexual caroline, he cares more about matters of the heart and so chooses sam, with whom he can envision having a serious relationship. however, it's the virgin note which piques his interest and the repeated references to how sam's just on the cusp of womanhood that make me think that's what's driving him.

i dunno, there just seems like there's a duplicity at play here.

having "if you were here" playing over the closing scene ain't helping, either:

if you were here
i could deceive you
and if you were here
you would believe
but would you suspect
my emotion wandering, yeah
do not want a part of this anymore

i'm not trying to defend this in front of a thesis committee, btw. i just think structurally it's weird that they drop the "am virgin, want to do it with jake" thing the he KNOWS about at the start of the movie and then never address it again. it's just hanging there over everything else that happens after that.

I was just getting ready to revive this thread, but not to talk about the donger.

Short Round/Data (Jonathan Ke Quan) got brought up in the action movies thread. Less offensive than LDD, probably. But how much less?

Bonus thought: Big Trouble in Little China. Certainly has Chinese stereotypes/Asian exoticism in it. But also has a variety of characters. Or am I just fooling myself? Ebert says "straight out of the era of Charlie Chan and Fu Manchu, with no apologies and all of the usual stereotypes"

RudolfHitlerFtw (Hungry4Ass), Saturday, 18 February 2012 23:22 (twelve years ago) link

i think the deal with big trouble in little china is that it's trying to reflect a specifically asian approach to fantasy, so the characters are borrowed from wuxia films and literature and chinese supernatural tales, etc. but yeah, it definitely slides into charlie chan/exotica territory. difference between actually being something and copying/spoofing that thing from "outside".

i've never found it particularly offensive, despite its many obvious stereotypes, but maybe i need to rethink it a bit.

http://shanghaiist.com/2012/03/15/french_tennis_pro_michael_llodra_ap.php

rench tennis player Michaël Llodra (ranked No. 41 in the world) recently pulled off a Vincent Chin-esque double-whammy of racial insensitivity, after he reportedly screamed "Fucking Chinese!" at a Korean-American woman in attendance during his first round match against Ernests Gulbis at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California. He has since taken to his website to apologize in a classically non-apologetic fashion, by qualifying that he is not a racist, and that he lost his temper because the Indian Wells court being uncooperative, and also because tournament organizers scheduled his matches poorly.

Long Duk Dong Formed in 2010, Long Duk Dong rapidly has gained the attention of fans throughout the DC, Baltimore and surrounding areas for their ability to play 80’s music “with an edge”. This isn’t Pop 80s, you will enjoy songs from bands such as the Alarm, the Plimsouls, the Knack, Midnight Oil, REM and many more. After playing to packed crowds at the State Theater in Virginia and the Black Cat in DC, Dong fever is driving fans crazy. We have enjoyed sharing the stage to sell-out crowds opening for the Smithereens. Also, with famous musicians like Mark Bryan of Hootie and the Blowfish and recording artist Danielle Howle.
Long Duk Dong is getting national attention with word spreading throughout the Southeast and with opportunities on the college circuit for Fall 2012.
So, come by and check us out. You will not be disappointed. Hope you enjoy our site and thank you.

In the decades since the film was released, Rooney’s portrayal of Yunioshi — taped eyelids, buck teeth, sibilant accent and all — has become one of the persistent icons of ethnic stereotype, brought up whenever conversation turns to the topic of Hollywood racism. The depiction has prompted widespread protests whenever the film is screened; Paramount, the studio behind “Breakfast” has now acknowledged Yunioshi as such a toxic caricature that its canonical “Centennial Collection” DVD release of the film includes a companion documentary, “Mr. Yunioshi: An Asian Perspective,” which features Asian American performers and advocates in conversation about the role’s lasting cultural impact and the broader context of Asian and other racial stereotypes in entertainment.

Anyway my thoughts are I'm worried that this is like the Chappelle Show

Where the showrunners think they're twisting stereotypes

But non-black (or in this case non-azn) audiences are just like "Haha I'm rick james, bitch!!" or here "Haha his name is Dong and he has a funny accent"

I thought this take by Arthur Chu was good

http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/television/2015/03/race_in_unbreakable_kimmy_schmidt_how_critics_are_missing_the_point.html

I also wish Dong had confidently grabbed the model minority stereotype by the horns to play with and mock it—maybe I’ve been spoiled by Fresh Off the Boat. Or I’d have liked Dong’s negative reaction to racism to become the source of some over-the-top humor—I see Sr. Chang’s explosive reaction to people questioning his ability to be a Spanish teacher in Community as a perfect gag, its own version of Titus trying to wear the werewolf costume 24/7 because being a werewolf improves his life.

Instead we get weaksauce stuff like Dong actually being good at math but Kimmy being chided for racism for saying so. Limp stuff like people making dick jokes about his name only for him to briefly comment that Kimmy also means penis in Vietnamese.

...

Similarly, Dong would’ve been groundbreaking 10 years ago, maybe even five years ago. But in a post-Selfie, post-Fresh Off the Boat world I just don’t care about him. Kimmy’s landlady Lillian gets a great line about how white women “swimming upstream” against negative stereotypes about Asian men can “clean up,” but Dong is, from top to bottom, a stereotype. He’s positively portrayed, but everything about that positive portrayal is straight-up model minority stuff—hardworking, smart, earnestly naive about sex and romance, unimpeachably innocent and well-intentioned.

Every single other important character on the show—Lillian, her boss Jacqueline, her roommate Titus, her fellow captives, her teenage frenemy Xanthippe, Kimmy herself—is a grotesque cartoon who is lovable despite the fact that in real life they’d be intolerable for all kinds of reasons. This only makes Dong, who would be a bland character on a “normal” sitcom, even more of a misstep.

Which is probably why even though Ki Hong Lee is a really good looking guy, there was zero chemistry or heat between Dong and Kimmy on-screen, whereas the previous show with a redhead white chick with an Asian dude love interest, Selfie, has this scene. It’s not a fair comparison. Selfie was built around Henry and Eliza’s will-they-or-won’t-they romance while Dong is a late introduction to the show. But that’s the point.

At the end of An American Tail, the mice successfully chase off the cats who end up on a freighter to Hong Kong, whose destination is revealed with an "oriental" music cue. I had never thought about it until recently, but is this supposed to be a subtle nod to the stereotype that Chinese people eat cats? Something like, "these cats think they have it bad now, wait til they get where they're going!" I'm not even sure if I'm perceiving this right. Almost on a dogwhistle level, maybe?

It really does blow my mind that the Simpsons has basically been on autopilot for nearly 20 years. You have one of the most successful brands in television history and you just squander it year after year. Like there would be any real consequence in just, like, doing a good job

Wow @ that clip, how is this show still going?

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 9 April 2018 16:03 (six years ago) link

one of the few new Simpsons episodes I've seen in the last decade actually addressed this issue head-on. before even the documentary came out. it was about Apu's cousin or something. mostly jabs at millennials (ugh) but there was one poignant bit

frogbs, Monday, 9 April 2018 16:08 (six years ago) link

it's a pretty obvious sentiment but comedy is extremely difficult, and i think even more difficult is trying to maintain a consistent comedic tone w/different creative types being brought in. the peak era staff wasn't just funny but also extremely smart about their humor and knew how to effectively deploy it, you watch old episodes and they're very understated and not wall-to-wall jokes, and they deeply understand the characters. seems like the staff at present tried and failed to get into the writer's room at AFV but sneaked into the Simpsons somehow.

and i think the animation style over the past however many years hasn't done the show any favors, it's a bit uncanny valley so i can't quite explain it but there's not nearly as much personality or humor in the way the characters appear, it's too polished or something.

omar little, Monday, 9 April 2018 16:13 (six years ago) link

in addition to the poor writing the show's standoffish tone is really irritating these days. I remember one that had a card in the end that said, "okay, you can all now log on to your computers and complain about this episode now", which would have sounded dated in 1999, much less 2006 or whenever it actually aired

frogbs, Monday, 9 April 2018 16:16 (six years ago) link

Yeah, one of the odder but sorta unsurprising thing is that the writing staff were online pre-web and paying attention to Usenet very early on

tbh what's on tv now isn't really the simpsons. this is a disappointing response but modern-day simpsons was never going to be capable of the smart + nuanced response this deserved.

This is similar to recent Seinfeld bullshit in that the sheer witlessness is more shocking than the defiant commitment to bigotry if you stopped paying attention a long time ago. Like, ppl becoming more shitty when their shittiness is pointed out is not uncommon, and obv everyone knows they've lost it but how do you lose it this much?

I don't think it's fair to categorize the show as "fairly right-wing" or as liberal so much as always shooting at targets of opportunity. The three-eyed-fish episode where Mr. Burns ran for office took a dim-view of right-wing faux-populism, but there's also

they definitely had the very light version of the toxic "everyone's a target" crap animation shows jumped wholeheartedly into in the late 90s, but it was a little less obvious because the core of the writing was really that 90s middlebrow white dude view that we've mostly solved racism, sexism, and inequality and anyone still affected by those is probably just not working past it

Van Horn Street, Tuesday, 10 April 2018 21:35 (six years ago) link

classic simpsons was never remotely right-wing -- the al sharpton/spike lee joke is from after that era, i remember being pissed off by it at the time. the jokes about democrats being soft on crime or giving away free money or whatever are clearly jokes about popular right-wing talking points.

John Swartzwelder, who wrote for the Simpsons from the start for 14 years and wrote more episodes than any other writer is a self-described "hardcover conservative", libertarian, and has been described as an "anti-environmentalist".

swartzwelder's views don't seem to have made it into the episodes he wrote. i guess he did write the episode where homer buys a gun, but i wouldn't say that episode was really pro-gun.

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 11 April 2018 06:22 (six years ago) link

would like to point out tho that the Simpsons persuasively pointed out the one danger of owning a gun for your own protection, in that it can lead to a child getting its hands on it and accidentally shooting someone.

There was an interesting thread on Twitter yesterday where someone was going over old drafts of early episode storyboards and Matt Groening was having to tell writers to take out racist / ableist jokes and make sure the show universe was inclusive.

Separately, Al Jean seems like an ass.

In case you had any doubt about where The Simpsons was coming from with its response to "The Problem With Apu" last night, this is what showrunner @aljean was retweeting afterwards. :( Count me as another once-devoted fan who has closed this door for good. pic.twitter.com/FRpHckk9Ak

Yeah Jean tweeted about the episode before it aired anticipating the outrage afterwards. So what was the point of addressing it if all you can offer is a welp shrug and resort to a cheap publicity grab for a show that's been stagnant and practically irrelevant for nearly twenty years.

Can only speak up to season 10/11. The notion The Simpsons was right-wing doesn't land for me. Not was it especially left-wing. It just represented whatever the conversation might have been going on at the time. Homer is a moving target. Lisa is probably getting to left-wing, but is developing. Marge could be a version of a grown-up Lisa (she voted for Carter twice etc.)

pretending Apu was ever acceptable is bullshit isn't it? I mean here they are getting called out on it 11 years ago

I'd like to see the doc on Apu. Its a shame he was used to mock US/North American Asians as I do think he was overall a pretty positive depiction given the constraints of not being a main character, and then being a character on a cartoon show at that (Apu having a PhD is as much a part of the caricature as the accent. Its just what Indians do, you know.) Overall I was laughing with Apu back then.
