Cool, that looks like it has a lot of potential. What do the numbers beside the release names mean?

The numbers are track-counts. Things our database thinks are "albums" are italicized, things we think are "singles" have their titles shown in quotes. But this can be fuzzy, so the track counts sometimes help clarify things.

If you hover over a thing you can also see the artist's popularity rank (which is also the sort key both within clusters and in the full list on the right).

All the releases aren't in the official playlist because there are ~3000 of them every week, and a very large number of them are of interest to approximately nobody.

That's cool. What does the yellow text mean? And could the full list be in alphabetical (or some kind of) order?

The full list is in descending artist-popularity order, so the idea is that at some point as you're going down it you can decide that you've hit your obscurity threshold.

The orange releases in the full list are the ones that my automatic categorizing didn't put into any of the clusters on the left.

Yeah, I have Les Ambassadeurs genre-classified properly, but the clustering works at a lower level than that, so it thinks they don't have quite enough in common with the other artists in that cluster. Computers!

I'm still trying to track down why some of the links don't work. See above note about "experimental".

And yes, one of the reasons I'm working on this is to figure out how we could do a better job of surfacing more new stuff. But still, look at some of the stuff at the bottom of that list...

idk how feasible it is, but i'd love to be able to browse new releases by country

i would think regular curators would be able to make great hay with that "bottom of the list" stuff... i remember the site that played songs no one had ever played; a deep digital crate digging tab on the app or the official blog could turn out regular virals

Oh, and the story with the few where the links don't work is that those links ought to work soon. Everything on that list is slated for US availability, but in a few rare cases where we don't get stuff ahead of time, there can be a little lag before it actually becomes available to everybody.

The unclustered ones are in orange, so after you go through the clustered ones you can scan the orange ones on the right until they start looking stupid. That's the idea.

(There are many reasons why an artist wouldn't get clustered, including that I suppress clusters that would have only a very small number of artists unless at least one of them is at least vaguely remotely notable (according to our data).)

glenn, how come older albums show up on the list? for example Majida El Roumi · Ebhath Aanni is from 1994. is it bc it's the first time on spotify, is it mislabeled, or is it a reissue or something?

(i should add, it's labeled as a 2014 release on the spotify app itself - only if you google it do you see it's really twenty years old.)

I should clarify that I had nothing whatsoever to do with the visual treatment of that hip-hop thing, and until I opened up the magazine myself I totally thought there was going to be a map with various-thickness arrows arching back and forth. I'll say, at least, that the Game Theory reissue (Blaze of Glory), which is the beginning of a full GT reissue campaign by Omnivore, is a tiny wonder from the world of nerdy just-post-punk Californian power-pop, and if you like that sort of thing and don't already know Game Theory, your Spotify subscription is about to pay for itself.

The only other two I've had time to absorb are Solstafir (Icelandic black/progressive metal band sounding increasingly self-assured and ambitious) and Malrun (Danish melodic rock/metal band stomping around in enthusiastic and borderline glam-rocky fashion).

Oh, and the great pop-rock single "Running to You" by a Latvian teenager named Katrine Lukins.

Oh, and I'm now liking the slightly shoegazey indie-rock crunch of Basement on this 3-song EP Further Sky.

And if you don't know Rothko, and think the sound of ambient/post-rock humming with multiple bass players sounds intriguing, their compilation "A Life Lived Elsewhere" is just up, and a pretty decent intro to the band.

Holy crap, this week. A new CHVRCHES song and the deluxe reissue of Big Country's <i>Steeltown</i> would have been enough for me, personally, but there's even some new music that isn't from Scotland. I'm excited to hear the whole Tove Lo album, too. There's also a promising EP from fellow Swedish singer Laleh. I'm liking the new songs by Lorde, Tinashe and Fei-Fei. I'm excited that the new tyDi album has a song with Kerli singing. There's a VAMPS ballad and a Gackt soundtrack. The Last Bison, who I think of as one of the more interesting quiet stomp-and-holler bands, has a new album. Chihiro Onitsuka and Billys Sandwitches have a very non-idolish j-pop album.

In metal there are grim new albums I'm excited to hear by 1349, Khold, Nightbringer, Xerath, Nonexistence and Unit 731, and bright gothic extravagances by White Empress, Ancestral Legacy and Davey Suicide. And one of my old favorite neo-prog bands, Enchant, has a new one.

And then there is a pile of intriguing weird-noises albums I mostly don't know anything about, but flagged to hear: Ssaliva, Hampus Hyppe, Gus Till, Giant Claw, Second Suspense, Calvin and the Hobgoblins, The War on Peace, Toydrum. And there's a really pretty acoustic-guitar album by somebody called T-cophony that sometimes is just guitar and sometimes mixes in all sorts of other things and sometimes doesn't.

I especially think people here who are fond of Prince and Owen Pallett and FrankMusik and r-neg-b and vaporwave ought to check out this 4-song EP by "Calvin + the Hobgoblins", about whom the internet seems to know rather little. http://open.spotify.com/album/1cz9578wBlfpgFpm9heKUU

No, the two are not drastically different. I just took a cursory look at some of the relatively few things that are technically available in one of the two countries but not the other, and all of the ones I checked were cases where a release is only available in one, but the same audio is available on another release in the other country. I'm sure there are actual differences, too, but I couldn't quickly find any.

I know this isn't the thread, but I have a tech Spotify question -- is there a way to easily/quickly see the full title of a track? Often classical music track titles are very, very long because they list composer, piece, orchestra, conductor, and only then the movement or sub-section and I can't actually see the last part.

You can use playlists to make collections of albums. You can also use Playlist Folders to make multiple levels, but you have to create and manage them in the desktop client.

On the desktop client you can also type label:"Sarah Records" or whatever in the search box to find stuff from a given label.

heh, so of course i waited for it all to load and tried to create a playlist to futz with and spotify is not keen on creation of an 18,862 track playlist

spotify has lots of issues with big playlists, it's kind of annoying

A workaround I've used for huge playlists is to split the tracks into a few smaller playlists, then put those into a playlist folder. If you click on the playlist folder itself, it displays all the files and you can sort and search them together as though they were a single playlist.

That's also what I do except it backfired on me when I started to use Roku as my main spotify player as it doesn't allow you to play folders, only single playlists

the "issue" such as it is with the sorting hat is that i consistently find more music in a given two month period than I could comprehensively listen to in a year. I'm having to start back up to the back up playlists to hold stuff for the slow winter months.

I was a big T'Pau fan, and remain a big fan of their first three albums. This new song doesn't recapture much of their dramatic essence, though, at least for me, so I don't have high expectations for the whole album.

Oh, and the Ásgeir album is actually his original 2012 Icelandic debut, which was subsequently translated and re-recorded in English as In the Silence.

I seem to frequently run into issue with desktop spotify where I click an artist's song under 'Albums', and spotify plays another song from that artist instead. However, if I click a song under 'Popular' for that artist, the correct song plays.

I was going through the new release site on everynoise.com that I think was posted upthread and noticed that some group called "Craft" that is definitely not the black metal group of that same name is miscategorized as black metal. Not sure if this messes anything else up. Sucks when you search for Craft now that all the results are cluttered with this other group, but not sure if genre tags could even fix that. Maybe if you filtered out DK Records, or just specified the black metal genre.
