feel like its an interesting comparison cause they are extremely similar bands sitting on either side of the hipster/indie divide

lag∞n, Friday, 12 December 2014 18:51 (nine years ago) link

Facts and figures to help in your decision making: The first Strokes album is better than the entire Spoon discography. The second Strokes album is roughly as good as the entire Spoon discography. The entire Spoon discography is better than the Strokes' third album. Spoon was the backing band on the first Sally Crewe album, which is a pretty good album. Spoon is a terrible band name.

Mr. Bojangus (Old Lunch), Friday, 12 December 2014 18:54 (nine years ago) link

strokes bro is a much better songwriter than spoon dude is prob the thing that puts them over the top imo, like spoons phrasing particularly is often very awkward

lag∞n, Friday, 12 December 2014 18:56 (nine years ago) link

both are very over produced bands but strokes musicianship shines through more where spoon particularly their recent work sounds more like a beat than a band which is unfortunate imho cause they are excellent musicians

I wouldn't say Spoon hasn't been particularly inventive...

Spoon being somewhat inventive (Kill the Moonlight): fun
Spoon being pretty straightforward (Girls Can't Tell): kinda boring

Evan, Friday, 12 December 2014 19:07 (nine years ago) link

ya spoons minimalism is def their most avant aspect

Spoon's early work is the only thing that resonates with me, so they have that in their favor. Also, I truly believe the Strokes have the worst-recorded snare drum in all of popular music, so away with them!

Love Spoon but their best record isn't even an album, it's that single they put out where both songs are dis tracks about their former A&R guy ("The Agony of Lafitte"/"Lafitte Don't Fail Me Now"). A Series of Sneaks, Kill The Moonlight, Gimme Fiction and this latest one are all time.

I like all three of the first Strokes records a lot better than most here, and even like the third better than the second, which I know puts me in challops territory.

If I had to choose, probably Spoon, although a Strokes best-of might beat them.

I didn't care about Ga ga ga back in the day and my enthusiasm for them never recovered after that. On the other hand, I never cared about The Strokes. Also, I had never realized "Room on fire" was held in such high esteem. I thought it was a total New Jersey, or at least that's how I perceived it back then.

I could never understand why The Strokes were getting singled out for praise in the early 00's when there was so much more interesting music being made by others at the time. Not even giving their albums a listen in hindsight made me warm to them, or indeed give me any indication of what the whole fuss was about.

this is why i never heard the strokes, i wasn't listening to much rock music or indie rock when they broke and once they were seen as having fizzled i never felt like going back to check out their 15-minutes moment

Y'know, I was going to vote for the Strokes under the opinion that as tedious as their music was, I spent a lot of 2001/2 wrestling with how physically attractive I found them.

But now I look at photos of them, and I just think... jeez, what kind of heavy drugs was I taking in that period to make that band look even remotely sexy?

Facts and figures to help in your decision making: The first Strokes album is better than the entire Spoon discography. The second Strokes album is roughly as good as the entire Spoon discography. The entire Spoon discography is better than the Strokes' third album. Spoon was the backing band on the first Sally Crewe album, which is a pretty good album. Spoon is a terrible band name.

I heard a commercial or something the other day where "Reptilia" was the background music and was like, damn that was a good song.

I will rep for at least half the tracks on First Impressions of Earth, esp. You Only Live Once, Razorblade, Vision of Division and Heart In A Cage.

Under Control is the best song on ROF, fuiud.

this is quite easily Spoon. the Strokes peaked really early and was never able to better their second album. Spoons run from Kill the Moonlight to Transference is pretty remarkable.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Tuesday, 16 December 2014 05:25 (nine years ago) link

Please don't mistake this as me stanning for The Strokes by any means, but all the talk about them peaking early and people saying they haven't listened to the later albums need to hear Comedown Machine asap. It's the "Rhapsody in Blue" to Is This It?'s "Chopsticks".

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 16 December 2014 06:27 (nine years ago) link

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 16 December 2014 06:29 (nine years ago) link

Spoon up through Kill The Moonlight are super-catchy fun indie-pop; everything after is boring as hell and sounds the same, like they're the indie Foo Fighters.

Strokes first album makes me want to shove a needle into my eardrum now - so monochromatic and lazy. I can only barely remember the second and never heard anything after.

Spoon wins by several laps, but at least the Strokes aren't Interpol.

Strokes had a great debut and diminishing returns. Spoon has been consistent and far more interesting.

Moka, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 17:33 (nine years ago) link

I think the only Strokes related album I like other than Is This It? is that Little Joy album, although it's too low key to be truly memorable.

Moka, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 17:35 (nine years ago) link

Individual albums polled against each other might have given the Strokes the win, but we were polling bands in here and Spoon is really the better band. + not obnoxious like the strokes.

Moka, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 17:39 (nine years ago) link

what interested me about this poll tbh was really the moral dimension, feel like theres something so perfect abt the very similar cultures of these two bands and how it relates to their very similar music, the contrast, the narcissism of small differences going, like the strokes are douchey and relevant (at one point), the spoon are boring but good guys

+ not obnoxious like the strokes.

Oh yeah, Comedown Machine is probably their best album. Had no faith they would manage to do anything worthwhile with a more tight production but it works.

Moka, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 17:44 (nine years ago) link

I always thought the divide would come from a band like Vampire Weekend. Seems to me like the oppositte band a Strokes fan would enjoy.

Moka, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 17:51 (nine years ago) link

Spoon's entire premise seems to be being middlegrounded.

Moka, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 17:52 (nine years ago) link

vampy weeknd def fits in there somewhere but these two bands their music is so similar felt like it was the perfect template

lag∞n, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 17:52 (nine years ago) link

the main difference between the two bands for me how Spoon creates alterations in standard rock rhythms without compromising accessibility. The Strokes p much play 16th notes 24/7.

Darin, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 18:12 (nine years ago) link

for Noodle Vague and to back Scik Mouthy: http://www.metacritic.com/feature/best-music-of-the-decade

Our top overall artist of the decade: Spoon

Before we get to the top albums of the past ten years, let's take a look at the best artists of the decade. First, we decided to highlight the top overall artists of the past 10 years by picking the artists who met the following three criteria: (a) released at least 3 albums from 2000-09; (b) at least two of those albums must be "great" (with a Metascore of 81 or higher); and (c) the average (mean) Metascore for all of their releases from the decade must also be 81 or higher.

The top 35 artists meeting all three criteria are displayed below (sorted by number of great albums, then by Metascore average), and the band topping the list was a surprise to us as well, albeit a pleasant one. The Austin, Texas indie-rock band Spoon may not be the most prolific band of the decade, but they were the most consistently great. From 2001's stellar Girls Can Tell to 2007's, well, stellar Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, the Britt Daniel-led group received accolades from the music press and music fans for their impeccable songwriting and addictive songs.

You Only Live Once, Juicebox, Heart in a Cage, Razorblade, Ask Me Anything, Electricityscape, Fear of Sleep, 15 Minutes and Ize of the World are the keepers on First Impressions. Throw in Juicebox's B-Side Hawaii and that's a solid album.

I really liked Angles when it came out but looking at the track listing now I only really remember the first two songs.

Agree that Comedown Machine is pretty underrated. I really didn't think they had a song like Call It Fate Call It Karma in them.
