My years of prayers have been answered, a Nick Höppner album exists!

The existence of a forthcoming Zenker Bros. album doesn't hurt either.

Nothing like a good old-fashioned vocal house belter. I believe it's by one of the guys that was in Sweet Exorcist (if Sweet Exorcist was more than one person, which I think is the case)

flopson, Tuesday, 27 January 2015 00:18 (nine years ago) link

yeah, they put out way too much stuff. my favorite releases of theirs: lnrdcroy - much less normal, khotin - hello world, and d. tiffany. and they also put out a moon b thing that i haven't heard, but i like almost everything by moon b so it's prob good.

xelab, Saturday, 31 January 2015 16:56 (nine years ago) link

Honestly, "year" should really mean "last 12 months". The idea you "can" talk about an 11.5 month old record in December but not a 1 month old record in January is kind of silly.

Lol I'm just compensating for not having anything new to talk about. I think it was mentioned on the last bobbins thread, but the reagenz live album is really very nice.

I was disappointed with the KiNK album, felt like a lot of lukewarm gestures in a bunch of aimless dirrections - which is not to say I just want him to keep still and pump out classic KiNK bangers for an hour (ok, I probably do), but the album makes it clear that's what he does best.

i ask because my local indie record shop (which tends to only carry serious electronic stuff like aphex or andy stott) got in a copy and i feel like maybe i have to buy it to support

the late great, Wednesday, 11 February 2015 14:12 (nine years ago) link

have you talked to them about contacting distributors for more of that kind of stuff? there is a new shop here that also tends to only carry "serious" electronic music. i asked the owner about l.i.e.s. and he ended up getting in touch with whoever distributes their stuff in the states. getting a shipment in tomorrow apparently. he said there were a few other labels included as well. idk it's probably different for whoever but maybe you could mention a label or two and see if they're open to trying it out. i'd love to be able to browse and pick up releases from good mainly-vinyl euro labels in a shop.

mattresslessness, Wednesday, 11 February 2015 18:34 (nine years ago) link

groove distribution out of chicago looks good for that sort of thing but idk anything about this game really.

This is a quick, quarterly reminder that all available tracks mentioned on this thread (and a few album selections) are being posted as updated to a thread-specific Spotify playlist that I'm maintaining. I just did a quick sweep prior to posting this message and updated as of today with everything that's been added on Spotify since it was first mentioned.

That playlist is currently a bit more than three hours of music and is clickable below.
Give it a spin and subscribe if you want to listen along through the year.

the late great, Thursday, 23 April 2015 07:06 (nine years ago) link

That case is totally weird, I'm guessing there's more to it than what's reported there. It seems likely that he lifted the tracks and made some minor edits and adjustments, but then why did Tresor produce stickers first and then decide to withdraw the release afterwards? And where to you draw the line with techno and originality anyway? *brain hurts*

MikoMcha, Thursday, 23 April 2015 11:38 (nine years ago) link

You draw the line where a track is actually by someone else

saer, Thursday, 23 April 2015 12:22 (nine years ago) link

Lol, I read that article because I first understood "Tresor recalls Confucio's Golden Rule..." to mean "Tresor remembers some sort of Confucianist type philosophical axiom" and wondered what the hell they were talking about.

ed.b, Thursday, 23 April 2015 17:02 (nine years ago) link

I had a quick listen to the different tracks, they are not exactly the same, but point taken I guess about it being by someone else. That said, it seems like there's clearly a lot of weird behind the scenes stuff in this incident as well.

No surprise that this one's packing serious damage. '21 Versions' is razor-sharp, all twangy keys carrying an appropriate amount of prang, soaked in percussion and drums rumbling and clattering all the way through. Outrageous tune set to destroy soundsystems all over.

djmartian, Saturday, 6 June 2015 14:25 (eight years ago) link

I'm not sure why, since I've at least passively enjoyed everything I've heard of him, but for me Palmbomen seems to almost represent the tipping point of self-consciously lo-fi nu-new-age house. I realize that singling him out is pretty arbitrary, since obviously he's hardly the first to run lo-fi house tropes into the ground, but, I dunno, he seems to be right at my particular line in the sand.

Bicep - Just
https://soundcloud.com/platform/bicep-just-boiler-room-debuts

Production-wise, the palette is strikingly non-specific, shades of tech-house in the rolling beat, a synth that sounds tactile without ever feeling retrofitted or nostalgic, and that swirling, sinister bass that never drops as much as it just broods before disappearing. In the most basic sense, this is a track that sucks the air out of the place, replacing whatever atmosphere was previously there with one of its own. Fascinating, mesmeric, and effortlessly cool.

I looked at the list and it looks very similar to a blueprint I saw last year of a new housing development, each record like the arrival of another mcmansion crushing all wildlife before it, soon we will have nothing left. It looks like the blue steam engine also knows the pain of these sounds proliferating where once was serenity and geniality

brilliant 7 minute techno track by Terriers, riyl Levon Vincent / Laurent Garnier

Terriers - Believing The Crystal
https://soundcloud.com/truants/terriers-believing-the-crystal

Dublin duo, Terriers

Appearing on Octagon, the debut release of new Dutch label Rhythm Nation, it's both solid and nebulous, chunky grooves and washes of extra-terrestrial synth coming together beautifully. A direct yet emotive synth lune clambers to life while disparate elements shake and dance amidst the fog, offering just another taste of their undoubted gifts.

This is a quick, quarterly reminder that all available tracks mentioned on this thread (and a handful of album selections from each listed) are being posted as updated to the thread-specific Spotify playlist. I just did a second, top-to-bottom sweep prior to posting this message and have updated as of today with everything that's been added on Spotify since it was first mentioned.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, this thread is more-or-less the least in sync with Spotify's catalogue but, even so, I've pulled 70 tracks and 7+ hours of music at the halfway point of 2015.

I also haven't liked a lot of what DJ Q has been including in his sets lately, so that sourced had dried up for me. Thanks to ILM, I was finding lots of house I loved for a couple years there, but lately it hasn't been happening. I assume it's still out there. House is too broad a house for me to sift through it all. Where do I find out about things now like Drums of Death's "True," for instance?

levon vincent on facebook

"Techno has never reminded me so much of heavy metal as todays' era. Where has the hint of Jazz influence gone? Afro-Cuban rhythms? Still, interesting stuff these days, but can a guy get a 7th chord once and again? Why has the scene shut down all the cultural collage, the melting pot, in favor of just, angst/ angry music? Im bored."

personally i have no idea WTF he's talking about, seems to me the jazzy & soulful to dark & banging ratio is more or less the same as it's ever been, i.e. it's low but you can always find detroit-influenced stuff if you look for it. in fact i think there's probably more of that stuff around than there's been at any time since the rise of minimal.

tbh I like the weird experimental stuff that straddles the techno / drone metal line but honestly, that's not a huge segment of the music being released and is negligible compared to jazzy/afro-cuban stuff

sometimes if you're not finding things that meet your specific tastes it's time to branch out or open your eyes to things that fulfill your needs from a different direction

μpright mammal (mh), Tuesday, 22 September 2015 13:49 (eight years ago) link

OTM. Has there EVER been a time when interesting records weren't being made by someone, somewhere. That kind of Disco Nihilist (aka pipecock jr.) logic is lazy to the point of, well, nihilism, if not just trolling, but is also really narcissistic - as if music is designed to gratify your specific and immediate tastes, and the world is wrong and needs to rise to your level. But mostly, denunciation is the lowest form of critique, especially when ignorance masquerades as prowess.

Arguably worse than that, though, is the quasi-scandal (and mostly I'm talking about the RA post) disingenuously built up around it. where does "i'm bored" (and NOT "I'm bored of techno) translate to "demigod levon vincent declares all techno dead, r.i.p. all techno." I mean, who fucking cares?

most techno producers are so insecure that they need to cut the rope on the bridge to authenticity island as often as possible. if you can tie yourself on to jazz while doing so, all the better.

doing my Objectives, handling some intense stuff (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 22 September 2015 17:47 (eight years ago) link

the other thing that's funny about this is seeing someone post it on facebook, like a producer, and all the comments were just one dance producer after another with long sad screeds about how music is just more trance-based and lacks soul and is just churned out etc etc. and half of these producers, that's how close to how i personally feel about their music - if not in the exact same words in a shorter more rude word. this kind of hero-narrative grousing about nebulous bad music while simultaneously failing to define it, call anyone out, or really paint any picture of its dominance is as normal for a techno producer as breathing.

really, he was reacting to a mix of his being almost all music from his label, as far as I can tell. instead of just being proud of the music he's helped release it turned into some tangent about music he likes isn't very easy to find. so uh, maybe he likes lots of music but didn't want to admit he'd rather pull from his own roster

Jackmaster actually recently had a mini-Twitter beef with DJ Sneak over his name. I have a lot of respect for the guy, he knows his shit and IMHO is one of the best DJs around now for kickstarting a party without compromising his unique style. Ventures into retro-disco territory may occasionally be misguided though. (Not that I have a problem with retro disco in the right context.)

Italian bass artist Clap! Clap! has a new EP, and it's very nice -- a little more electronic sounding than his previous stuff (and also less footwork-y), but still bouncy, and working in the African samples.

https://blackacre.databeats.com/vinyl/acre058

His 2014 full-length is practically flawless -- it goes over smooth, so maybe not surprising he hasn't broken out as a bigger name yet.

chicanismo is so fucking good. the digital synths are outstanding, they have that classic ur vibe, sharpened and updated a bit. really good-sounding digital synthesis that is not just about nostalgia, a lot of soul and some nice, melodic songwriting to go with it that i feel like effectively conveys roots without being stodgy about it. like for instance at 3:41 in UKB to LAX, when the lead hits that note it's something else, sends the track into a slightly different place, not really jazz, some other classic figure/progression i can't put my finger on. vario 2 vario is my other favorite, just sublime, sounds really great back-to-back with "le voyage" by brawther.

I noticed there is a lot of stuff here that sounds very retro in its way - lots of stuff that reminds me of Artificial Intelligence-era Warp techno and house... I know there've been classic house revivals for ages, but this feels very much more like a proper thing in this context... is this a 'thing' now?

context:

Hugo Massien signs to XL with Kontrol EP
http://www.residentadvisor.net/news.aspx?id=31979

Massien is the latest dance music producer to join the UK indie label, following Paul Woolford last month. XL say it's part of an ongoing effort to "reconnect with the spirit of the label's early days... built around a series of underground, club-focused, outsider rave 12-inches." They say Massien "harnesses that spirit" with the four-track Kontrol, which is roughly in line with the UK's bass-heavy deep tech scene
