~~~ 15 YEARS OF ILM POLL!!! ~~~ (Metal & Heavy Rock [+ related sub-genres] Edition) VOTING & DISCUSSION THREAD. ALL ILXORS WELCOME TO PARTICPATE!! Voting Ends 11.59pm UK Time September 9 2016 .
Message Bookmarked
Bookmark Removed
And finally, after several months nominations, seandalai and I can present you the voting & discussion thread.
I'm hoping as it's a lifetime of ILM poll we might get all of ILM participating not just the metal fans only crowd. It's a great chance to check out some great music you may be unaware of and please post in the thread asking for what kind of metal you would be interested in hearing and everyone will be happy to recommend you something.
This is not an extreme metal only poll. It covers all metal and heavy rock released 2000-2015 in ILM's lifetime. Many of which has appeared in the EOY Metal polls and are not very metal but is music made by metallers or loved by metal fans. Metal is a broad church and we hope to show this to ILM in general.
Even if you don't intend to vote please feel free join in discussions, but the more who listen to as much as they can and vote too the better.
All instructions are on the VOTING FORM
But here they are too
Please copy/paste your votes directly from the nominations list:
I will post the albums nominated below because I know people at work or tablet/phones cant always access links but please copy & paste from the link as requested by seandalai.
ALSO before you vote or while making up your longlists,
ALWAYS check the link because there's always someone who claims they didn't see the nominations list over the last 6 months and wants something added.... So if anything is missing It can be added.
As usual the ballot will be up to a MAXIMUM of 100 albums with no minimum. Vote for any number of albums between 1 & 100 as you can.
Now, we are doing something a bit different for the top ten.
We are weighting the top 10 with extra points compared to the rest. The idea is that your top 10 will be your actual personal favourite top 10 albums NOT the ones you think will win or place or that you think you should vote for because they are in the canon or sold the most.
We want you to pick your favourites in the top 10 REGARDLESS of whether you think it will place or not. Please do not do TACTICAL voting, in the top 10 at least. The extra weighting is to encourage this. It will help your lesser known faves place/place higher, so please consider this when voting, but of course at the end of the day you can vote as you want to. This isn't a rule, it's just a suggestion. The most important thing is you vote.
It will be a large rollout as usual so please try and do as many on your ballot as you can. If more fill out the top 100, the better it will be in the overall results.
That is why we are having an extended "study" period as always requested by Drugs A Money,Emil.y etc so everyone can listen to as much as they can and vote for as many as they can.
You have until September 9 to vote so no need to actually vote just now.
I suggest you use the time to make a long/short list and listen to albums on it to decide placings but also use it to check out albums that you haven't heard. I'd hope everyone on the thread will recommend albums people need to hear.
BOOSTING really works in these polls.
I'm hoping this will encourage non-regular voters or casual metal fans to take part and discover the really good albums in ILM's lifetime.
There is a collaborative spotify playlist for anyone to add albums they nominated to. So please use it and add albums (from the nominations list only) that are missing from it.
spotify:user:pfunkboy:playlist:4S8akTlAsZqRGc0eSPnoqy
or
https://open.spotify.com/user/pfunkboy/playlist/4S8akTlAsZqRGc0eSPnoqy
Happy Voting and please enjoy the discussions and hopefully everyone will discover some new to them music from such a vast genre!
Nominations List as of 17 July. Please refer to the actual pastebin link before voting incase more albums have been added.
What sub-genres have we seen being invented since ILM began?
Post-Metal
Djent
Drone Metal?
and the rise of doom metal especially from a real cult thing to the covers of The Wire, Terrorizer, Decibel etc
anything else?
Kerr will you request that a mod add 'RIP Alan Vega' to the thread title
Coming up with a real top 10 is going to be very difficult.
Frobisher, Sunday, 17 July 2016 19:54 (seven years ago) link
ColdWorld - Melancholie 2
ColdWorld – Melancholie²
Are the same album nominated twice. The 'squared' one is the proper formatting.
Frobisher, Sunday, 17 July 2016 19:57 (seven years ago) link
The Occult Rock revival is definitely something that happened within the last 15 years.
Frobisher, Sunday, 17 July 2016 19:58 (seven years ago) link
You have up to 100 votes on your ballot, Frobisher.
Or do you mean this bit?
We are weighting the top 10 with extra points compared to the rest. The idea is that your top 10 will be your actual personal favourite top 10 albums NOT the ones you think will win or place or that you think you should vote for because they are in the canon or sold the most.
We want you to pick your favourites in the top 10 REGARDLESS of whether you think it will place or not. Please do not do TACTICAL voting, in the top 10 at least. The extra weighting is to encourage this. It will help your lesser known faves place/place higher, so please consider this when voting, but of course at the end of the day you can vote as you want to. This isn't a rule, it's just a suggestion. The most important thing is you vote.
It will be a large rollout as usual so please try and do as many on your ballot as you can. If more fill out the 100 options on your ballot , the better it will be in the overall results.
Its just to encourage votes for people's real top 10 faves rather than the "no point in voting for this high because it wont place high"
If your top 10 is indeed the same top 10 as the 'canon' then that's fine. But fr many it wont be and we want to encourage votes in the top 10 for the real personal faves not what people think it should be or whatever.
Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 17 July 2016 19:59 (seven years ago) link
and everyone has about 2 months to listen to albums before deciding. Nobody need vote now, i just suggest that everyone start listening and making their longlist right away and spend the time working out their ballot over the next month or so
Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 17 July 2016 20:01 (seven years ago) link
Right, its very hard to list my favorite albums of the past 15 years in a structured way, deciding what bests something else, etc.
Frobisher, Sunday, 17 July 2016 20:06 (seven years ago) link
Start by listening to Dopesmoker if for some weird reason you haven't heard it!
Frobisher, Sunday, 17 July 2016 20:07 (seven years ago) link
there is a mixed ballot option so you can weight as much or as little as you want then have the rest of the 100 will get equal amount of points (ask seandalai to explain)
but i hope everyone will at least weight the top 10.
plus the more people who vote ranking in order the less likely ties are to appear.
if you rank from 1-100 the #100 will still get 12 points so it is well worth ranking all the way to 100.
Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 17 July 2016 20:20 (seven years ago) link
I'll be the first with a last-minute nomination, Seandalai:
The Blood Brothers - Crimes
Crimes is way better than Burn Piano Island Burn (which is also fantastic). If I can nominate it, it's going to be my #2 or so.
I wasn't really focused during the nominations, sorry. :(
Tom Violence, Sunday, 17 July 2016 20:23 (seven years ago) link
oh come on, all the Liturgy albums but Liturgy - Aesthetics got nominated? Weird!
Frobisher, Sunday, 17 July 2016 20:23 (seven years ago) link
I don't care I'm voting for :
Liturgy - Aesthetica
Frobisher, Sunday, 17 July 2016 20:24 (seven years ago) link
Can I request we please add Elder - Lore to the nominations?
calstars, Sunday, 17 July 2016 20:26 (seven years ago) link
Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 17 July 2016 20:35 (seven years ago) link
Well,like Doom, I think it was always around, no? But certainly has gotten a lot of underground coverage. Nothings crossed over yet.
Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 17 July 2016 22:46 (seven years ago) link
I saw Meliora in a Best Buy display rack, I'd count that as crossing over, wouldn't you?
Tom Violence, Sunday, 17 July 2016 22:49 (seven years ago) link
This is exciting. Thanks guys.
Isnt shoegaze metal like Deafheaven relatively new?
Neptune Bingo (Michael B), Sunday, 17 July 2016 22:51 (seven years ago) link
haha only if it sold lots! Which it hasn't.
I imagine Five Finger Death Punch,soulfly and Devildriver sell way more though I doubt they sell a million copies either but that's where mainstream metal is these days (shite and noone likes it compared to previous decades)
xxpost to tom
Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 17 July 2016 22:52 (seven years ago) link
Just saying, I've never seen Darkthrone in a Best Buy display rack.
Tom Violence, Sunday, 17 July 2016 22:52 (seven years ago) link
Crossing over in metal is relative, I guess?
Tom Violence, Sunday, 17 July 2016 22:53 (seven years ago) link
I see a Hellacopters album on the list! Good band i havent heard them in ages
Neptune Bingo (Michael B), Sunday, 17 July 2016 22:53 (seven years ago) link
shoegaze metal or blackgaze I suppose is new thanks to Alcest but it's still kinda an offshoot of post black metal, which obviously is an offshoot of black metal and post metal.
Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 17 July 2016 22:53 (seven years ago) link
metal bands discovering my bloody valentine 20 years after the rest of us basically. But taking it shoegaze somewhere new I guess until they then just started making actual shoegaze without the metal
If anyones wanting a tip for albums to check out i suggest
Agalloch - Ashes Against The Grain
Warning - Watching From a Distance
Aluk Todolo - Occult Rock
Weakling - Dead as Dreams
Isis - Oceanic/Panopticon (the latter is shoegazier for those into that)
Absu - Tara
for 'poppier' stuff
Torche
Ghost
Uncle Acid
Alcest
Rate Your Music has a best albums 2000-2010 list here
http://tinyurl.com/RYM-Best-Metal-Albums-2000-10
and 2000-16 so just ignore the 2016 albums
http://tinyurl.com/RYM-Best-Metal-Albums-2000-16
They should at least prove a guide for what to listen to but dig deep too if you can.
Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 17 July 2016 23:08 (seven years ago) link
If you are a fan of Black Metal style vocals and harsh guitar sound but enjoy more mid-tempo or even slow riffs and such, and are also a big depressed saddo, you might enjoy the sub-genre of Suicidal Depressive Black Metal. Its a great "blackened" compliment to funeral doom (in fact there are a few bands that are being described as "Funeral Black Metal" but that's primarily last.fm tags).
My favorite SDBM bands are:
Nocturnal Depression
Forgotten Tomb
Lifelover
I Shalt Become
This sort of thing has really only become popular in the last 10 years or more recent. There's some crossover with it and the larger sub-genre of atmospheric black metal but with a major focus on themes of suicide, depression, human extinction, antinatalism, etc. I have found it to be quite cathartic at certain times!
Anyway, that's my big sub-genre plug.
Frobisher, Sunday, 17 July 2016 23:42 (seven years ago) link
haha not one for the pop fans! Except the xasthur albums he made with the folk stuff on it
Cosmic Slop, Monday, 18 July 2016 00:15 (seven years ago) link
Cosmic Slop, Monday, 18 July 2016 01:48 (seven years ago) link
Pop fans obv. should be reevaluating Andrew W.K., who I feel is chronically underrated and disrespected.
Frobisher, Monday, 18 July 2016 02:44 (seven years ago) link
well, people should remember it's not just a metal poll , it's heavy rock too.
I've only ever heard a few songs by andrew wk that I like. What is his best album?
Cosmic Slop, Monday, 18 July 2016 02:47 (seven years ago) link
as for AWK here's my rundown: Mother of Mankind > The Wolf > Close Calls With Brick Walls > I Get Wet > his other things (soundtracks, piano stuff, etc.)
His best power ballads are on The Wolf, imo. Close Calls + MoMK was released as a double album at one point so if nothing else I'd say check that out it has a great mix of stuff. If you can get past the realization that his melodies and lyrics have the depth of nursery rhymes he's really really fun.
I suppose his advice article in the Village Voice is actually the best thing he's produced, but that's not music.
Frobisher, Monday, 18 July 2016 03:03 (seven years ago) link
A couple more duplicates in the list:
The Lord Weird Slough Feg - Down Among the Deadmen
Dark Space III
Wrong album title:
Grand Supreme Blood Court - Bow Down Before The Blood Court
Just realised no Deftones albums were nominated, was hoping to vote for them as my token nu-metal act.
Gavin, Leeds, Monday, 18 July 2016 12:34 (seven years ago) link
Well if you follow the Artist - Album format I can add it to google docs and seandalai will add it to the pastebin noms. But only request these things if you actually do at least consider voting for it.
I dont think seandalai has updated pastebin from yesterday so it shouldnt be a problem.
Cosmic Slop, Monday, 18 July 2016 12:51 (seven years ago) link
Cool, thanks:
Deftones - White Pony
Deftones - Diamond Eyes
Deftones - Koi no yokan
Pretty sure all three of these will make my ballot.
Gavin, Leeds, Monday, 18 July 2016 12:54 (seven years ago) link
Ok, I dont know when seandalai will get round to adding them as he's a busy chap.
Cosmic Slop, Monday, 18 July 2016 13:05 (seven years ago) link
I managed to cut down my draft longlist from 150 to 100. Sorted out my provisional top 10. That was really really tough. I wish I had asked seandalai to make the top 15 get extra points not just the top 10.
Is that possible seandalai?
Cosmic Slop, Monday, 18 July 2016 13:13 (seven years ago) link
Limp Bizkit looked promising as the flag for nu-metal voters to rally around.
Siegbran, Monday, 18 July 2016 13:17 (seven years ago) link
If the top 15 or top 20 had extra weight then that would make it easier then everyone could then just fill upto 100 or whatever number they can manage and have that part unweighted so they get the same amount of points but those who love to rank 1-100 can do so too.
I hope everyone iwll try make the largest ballot they can. The two months voting period means noone has to rush in ballots and can use the time to listen or relisten to albums.
Which they can add on the playlist for everyone to check out
I want to put a word in for that Plebeian Grandstand album I nominated - sort of discordant black metal/metalcore crossover (someone on RYM called them 'Deathscreamo Omega'). Really great.
Gavin, Leeds, Monday, 18 July 2016 15:17 (seven years ago) link
Dominique, Monday, 18 July 2016 17:59 (seven years ago) link
Unlike the all-time poll, which everyone knew who would win (but not which album), I dont see any actual certain winner standing out.
There's about at least 20 classics could win but none have sold so much that it makes them overwhelming favourites.
I think the past 15 years has been a great time for metal and heavy rock has been making a comeback to as people get fed up with extremity for extremities sake.
Cosmic Slop, Monday, 18 July 2016 18:50 (seven years ago) link
How is everyone deciding their tops tens? Most listened to albums? Or do you need to cut that shortlist down by ways such as 'game-changers'?
And how about the rest of the top 100 or whatever you choose to do?
Cosmic Slop, Monday, 18 July 2016 19:08 (seven years ago) link
Contenderizer and imago you always have convoluted ways of making ballots , how are you approaching this?
Cosmic Slop, Monday, 18 July 2016 19:09 (seven years ago) link
imago, Monday, 18 July 2016 20:02 (seven years ago) link
Not going to use the time to re-listen or listen to albums you haven't heard?
Cosmic Slop, Monday, 18 July 2016 20:17 (seven years ago) link
The scope here is huge...danger of being too disparate for a consensus?
calstars, Monday, 18 July 2016 20:18 (seven years ago) link
Might not be a bad thing?
Cosmic Slop, Monday, 18 July 2016 20:21 (seven years ago) link
ILM has a weird thing of wanting weird results unlike everywhere else who that has people who complains that *insert album here* isnt at #1 or whatever.
Cosmic Slop, Monday, 18 July 2016 20:22 (seven years ago) link
I slogged through the As and only saw 14 albums I'd heard (and most of those were by Amon Amarth) so I'm gonna chalk this up to "ILM's version of metal is not metal as I understand it" once again and walk away.
Tom Violence, Monday, 18 July 2016 20:59 (seven years ago) link
yeah, a poll too disparate to achieve consensus is the best kind of poll. Nothing to reach against, no canon to alter -- just a list of the actual favorite albums by the people voting, where everyone is likely to be surprised and learn about new stuff
Twilight Sparkle from My Little Pony said (contenderizer), Tuesday, 19 July 2016 18:53 (seven years ago) link
I did fix the darkspace so all 4 are listed as intended but i have no access to pastebin so the fixes and added nominations wont appear on it until seandalai fixes it.
I doubt anyones voted yet since they havent said here they have so it shouldnt make any difference.
Everyone just needs to go via the pastebin link rather than the list in the OP
Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 19 July 2016 19:08 (seven years ago) link
Thanks! (xpost)
Gavin, Leeds, Tuesday, 19 July 2016 19:16 (seven years ago) link
Also the missing Electric Wizard albums
Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 19 July 2016 19:22 (seven years ago) link
Thanks Siegbran, will check those out.
I've already voted but I'm not the most adequate voter for this poll. Still there's some weird things:
* Limp Bizkit on the nominees and no Deftones? Wouldn't vote for either but still...
* Marnie Stern is in there too which is weird as it doesn't fit anything else I think? Still I voted for it because why not?
* No Om... Pilgrimage, conference of the birds, variations on a theme... they're stoner metal but they're still metal no?
* Other artists besides Om I would've voted for but weren't on the list: Mastery, Ehnahre, Chthe'ilist, Khanate
✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 20 July 2016 08:38 (seven years ago) link
I can add them. Om and Khanate should be on there, yes
Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 20 July 2016 10:55 (seven years ago) link
added to spreadsheet but will need to wait for seandalai to add to pastebin.
ps pretty sure limp bizkit was troll nominated along with disturbed etc. Why? check a certain persons post upthread
Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 20 July 2016 11:00 (seven years ago) link
Use this just now until pastebin is updated
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/104IXKSHN1uWxe3MRFy4R5tHEOxLriKoBRKcjCNu_zus/edit#gid=1956354072
if there's any doubles please let me know
Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 20 July 2016 11:02 (seven years ago) link
oh and the deftones were added the other day BUT again pastebin wasnt updated as i cant do that.
I can repost all the noms here though if anyone cant access googledocs at work or whatever
Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 20 July 2016 11:13 (seven years ago) link
There's a poster who hated nominations constantly being posted as it mucked up searches so If a mod could instead update my OP with the full noms or even just remove them and add the google docs link along with the pastebin link in its place that would be tremendously helpful but I dont know if any mod will do that as they dont like me and jjj doesnt seem to be around to help :(
Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 20 July 2016 11:24 (seven years ago) link
Chthe'ilist
would vote, but their debut LP is excluded on grounds of being a 2016 release, and alls they've got prior is a 3-track ep
Twilight Sparkle from My Little Pony said (contenderizer), Wednesday, 20 July 2016 11:43 (seven years ago) link
demo ep, i meant to say
Twilight Sparkle from My Little Pony said (contenderizer), Wednesday, 20 July 2016 11:43 (seven years ago) link
om's first three definitely oughtta be on there tho
Twilight Sparkle from My Little Pony said (contenderizer), Wednesday, 20 July 2016 11:45 (seven years ago) link
they are on the googledocs list
Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 20 July 2016 11:52 (seven years ago) link
Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 20 July 2016 12:09 (seven years ago) link
* Marnie Stern is in there too which is weird as it doesn't fit anything else I think? Still I voted for it because why not?
Moka
She made a previous EOY poll and since the likes of Zombi and non-metal Ulver are on it why not indeed.
Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 20 July 2016 12:17 (seven years ago) link
I did fix the darkspace so all 4 are listed as intended but i have no access to pastebin so the fixes and added nominations wont appear on it until seandalai fixes it.
Thanks! Urging everyone to vote for and/or check out the all the Stargazer records, particularly if left-of-center death metal is your thing. Other weird/underground metal to check out:
Domains - Spanish OSDM; queasy, downward spiraling chords and great songs
Khthoniik Cerviiks - from 2015, for those who liked the new Cadaveric Fumes or Wakedead Gathering records (or above Domains)
Morko - Finnish black metal that is pretty all over the place. Great musicians, thankfully not too Catholic about the genre (related to fellow Fins Jumalhamara)
Murmuure - ambient/sound collage black metal. One of a kind record, and I think the only thing he did
Cadaver Inc - black/death/thrash hybrid for fans of Dodheimsgard and Aura Noir
Dominique, Wednesday, 20 July 2016 13:44 (seven years ago) link
love that domains lp
while we're listing stuff that won't get many votes:
Furze - UTD: Beneath the Odd-Edge Sounds of the Twilight Contract of the Black Fascist / The Wealth of the Penetration in the Abstract Paradigms of Satan
Merrimack - Of Entropy and Life Denial
Stara Rzeka - Cień Chmury Nad Ukrytym Polem
Hordes of the Lunar Eclipse - Dancing Demons in the Grey-Lit Glade
Wyrd - Heathen
Wyrd - Huldrafolk
Vreid - I Krig
Vreid - V
Twilight Sparkle from My Little Pony said (contenderizer), Wednesday, 20 July 2016 14:37 (seven years ago) link
The Murmuure is amazing. I have it on CD. I somehow missed the vinyl being issued at some point and now its about 200 euros to buy
Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 20 July 2016 15:23 (seven years ago) link
and the weakling LP is even more so again I make do with my cd
but those 2 should be checked out.
Added!
Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 20 July 2016 18:48 (seven years ago) link
if the goal is simply to include every album anyone might possibly vote for, then why not treat the internet as the nominations list, and just let people put whatever they want on their ballots?
Twilight Sparkle from My Little Pony said (contenderizer), Wednesday, 20 July 2016 18:52 (seven years ago) link
meanwhile...
Conan - Monnos
Conan - Blood Eagle
Twilight Sparkle from My Little Pony said (contenderizer), Wednesday, 20 July 2016 18:57 (seven years ago) link
Circle - Sunrise
Circle - Tulikoira
Twilight Sparkle from My Little Pony said (contenderizer), Wednesday, 20 July 2016 19:00 (seven years ago) link
because the spellings have to be correct otherwise seandalai's software wont pick it up properly. He's doing us a great favour doing the poll tabulating and I want to make it as easy as possible for him.
plus everyone needs a list to look through otherwise they forget to vote for stuff. The fact we are still taking nominations now is proof!!!
Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 20 July 2016 19:00 (seven years ago) link
makes sense
Hammers of Misfortune - The August Engine
Hammers of Misfortune - The Locust Years
Twilight Sparkle from My Little Pony said (contenderizer), Wednesday, 20 July 2016 19:03 (seven years ago) link
High Spirits - High Spirits
High Spirits - Another Night
Twilight Sparkle from My Little Pony said (contenderizer), Wednesday, 20 July 2016 19:06 (seven years ago) link
It's so hard deciding which Yob and Harvey Milk albums are the best. I could easily vote for them all. I may end up doing so.
Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 20 July 2016 19:38 (seven years ago) link
illusion of motion, special wishes
Twilight Sparkle from My Little Pony said (contenderizer), Wednesday, 20 July 2016 19:44 (seven years ago) link
I agree with special wishes I think but Catharsis or The Great Cessation for yob.
Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 20 July 2016 19:45 (seven years ago) link
yeah, catharsis would be my other pick. love that album.
Twilight Sparkle from My Little Pony said (contenderizer), Wednesday, 20 July 2016 19:47 (seven years ago) link
Yob, Harvey Milk, Unsane ,Swans and Celtic Frost (and Triptykon after that) all made amazing comeback albums as great as they did first time round. It takes something special to do that.
and all of those albums are nominated now.
Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 20 July 2016 19:47 (seven years ago) link
It's going to be really hard to decide what misses out as 2000-15 really has seen so many great albums.
I know very few have sold enough to reach the status of Reign In Blood or Master of Puppets did in the 80s but that doesn't matter.
Its been a great time for metal IMO. Great new bands and classic old bands coming back as good as they were.
Who would've thought Iron Maiden would come back as strong after a poor 90s?
Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 20 July 2016 19:50 (seven years ago) link
Problems with pastebin means seandalai cannot edit it so we are ditching it.
Please use the google docs link https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/104IXKSHN1uWxe3MRFy4R5tHEOxLriKoBRKcjCNu_zus/edit?usp=sharing
we can at least keep that up to date.
Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 20 July 2016 21:39 (seven years ago) link
Looks like we have 9 ballots too so quick work, I thought we only had one!
If anyone wants to update theirs due to forgetting anything just submit a new ballot and leave a message saying why for seandalai (also best to say so here too)
Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 20 July 2016 21:46 (seven years ago) link
cheers for putting this together btw
imago, Wednesday, 20 July 2016 21:57 (seven years ago) link
No problem, seandalai does the important stuff though!!
btw folks please post here when you vote so we can check it's gone through. I still feel rotten that billy dods votes werent counted in the all-time metal poll as his ballot didn't arrive.
No idea if he's still around but if so I hope he votes!
Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 20 July 2016 22:05 (seven years ago) link
I'm one of those 9 that submitted so quickly. Didn't see the google doc link until now. I will be updating in the future. I also have a few that I'd like added to the doc if that is possible:
well, i dont remember hot snakes or mcluskey making metal poll before so im not sure theyre eligible
Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 21 July 2016 13:32 (seven years ago) link
last thing we want is a poll full of indie rock
Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 21 July 2016 13:33 (seven years ago) link
zombi and ulver for instance get in because they are metal musicians and/or making music mostly listened to by metal fans.
Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 21 July 2016 13:34 (seven years ago) link
but ive added them.
Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 21 July 2016 13:35 (seven years ago) link
heavy rock is heavy rock. rawr.
Twilight Sparkle from My Little Pony said (contenderizer), Thursday, 21 July 2016 13:45 (seven years ago) link
imago, Thursday, 21 July 2016 13:47 (seven years ago) link
If anyone tries to add more indie i will need to remove them
Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 21 July 2016 13:51 (seven years ago) link
Marnie Stern,Zombi, Swans and Lightning Bolt get in because they made metal polls previously
Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 21 July 2016 13:51 (seven years ago) link
Though why you lot didn't nominate in the nominations thread and go through all this already..
Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 21 July 2016 13:52 (seven years ago) link
Cosmip Slop, whatchu got against Stargazer?
Dominique, Thursday, 21 July 2016 13:54 (seven years ago) link
your poll, but i think you're making too much of the indie vs metal distinction. i mean, it would suck if the top 10 were all p4k indie favorites, but i doubt that's gonna happen no matter what.
Twilight Sparkle from My Little Pony said (contenderizer), Thursday, 21 July 2016 13:54 (seven years ago) link
i wan't around when this thing started up, so i only noticed when you announced the final day or two for nominations. takes my brain at least a week to get up to thinking speed.
Twilight Sparkle from My Little Pony said (contenderizer), Thursday, 21 July 2016 13:55 (seven years ago) link
Dominique, nothing. Why?
Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 21 July 2016 13:58 (seven years ago) link
everything nominated should be on the googledocs spreadsheet. We are not using pastebin anymore.
I better ask a mod to remove the pastebin link
Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 21 July 2016 14:00 (seven years ago) link
I checked and there's 3 Stargazer albums. Should there be more?
Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 21 July 2016 14:01 (seven years ago) link
are comps ok w/ enforcement division?
Noothgrush - Failing Early, Failing Often
Twilight Sparkle from My Little Pony said (contenderizer), Thursday, 21 July 2016 14:01 (seven years ago) link
because I was using the wrong google docs link and didn't see them on the spreadsheet :P
Dominique, Thursday, 21 July 2016 14:02 (seven years ago) link
I think we decided no comps
Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 21 July 2016 14:04 (seven years ago) link
ok
certainly makes sense in this case, cuz it's all pre-00 material
Twilight Sparkle from My Little Pony said (contenderizer), Thursday, 21 July 2016 14:09 (seven years ago) link
Im sure you will have enough trouble cutting down your list to 100 as it is
Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 21 July 2016 14:30 (seven years ago) link
I thought I had my 100 but with the extra noms made I need to change it.
Where to start!!
Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 21 July 2016 14:34 (seven years ago) link
It's funny all you guys wanting to add indie but when we decided emo of the MCR/FOB style aka the one Kerrang and other heavy rock mags cover, nobody nominated them. Not even brad.
Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 21 July 2016 14:37 (seven years ago) link
infact Brad was one who was against it as he doesn't like to mix emo with his death metal.
Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 21 July 2016 14:48 (seven years ago) link
btw I added the missing Baroness albums and ive put the 2 ep's as one album because it was issued on a CD as the First Two ep's and it just makes more sense and its not a comp as such.
Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 21 July 2016 14:52 (seven years ago) link
and I added Beastmilk - Climax which is an ILM fave
Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 21 July 2016 14:53 (seven years ago) link
If Jeff, Chuck etc want to add stuff they want to vote for then they can.
Phil can add more to his noms too if he wants to. Always happy to allow things someone wants to vote for.
Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 21 July 2016 14:55 (seven years ago) link
just read through the whole list. good job, everyone, it's gonna make for some interesting ballots. i'm done nominating stuff, but was surprised not to see ruins of beverast (hint hint).
Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 21 July 2016 15:03 (seven years ago) link
A kindly mod removed the pastebin link in the OP so everyone should know now to use googledocs as Seandalai as changed the link on the voting form.
Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 21 July 2016 15:05 (seven years ago) link
they're all worthwhile, so
Ruins of Beverast - Unlock the Shrines
San Diego Camera Obscura
i already allowed that one since you seem dead set on voting for it. Nobody gets late nominations if its not stuff you really want to vote for. the nominations period lasted months and that was when anyone should have voted for the stuff noones heard of really that MIGHT get 1 vote.
I would say everythings been added as of yesterday so its only the important stuff I'll add now
Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 21 July 2016 20:49 (seven years ago) link
will be funny though if the twee pop fans mistakenly vote for it though sund4r :)
Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 21 July 2016 20:50 (seven years ago) link
No worries. I didn't even know anyone had voted until moka said yesterday she had.
I should ask seandalai to edit the form so that people know to say here they have so we can check it went through.
But only about 1 in 20 ever posts that they have voted anyway.
Looks like we did get a couple more today as we're into double figures but please remember folks to post here when you do your ballot.
Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 21 July 2016 23:30 (seven years ago) link
thought I knew which Immolation I was going to go with, but now I don't. Damn band hasn't made any bad records, have they?
Dominique, Friday, 22 July 2016 02:56 (seven years ago) link
Never heard any
Cosmic Slop, Friday, 22 July 2016 07:09 (seven years ago) link
Really unique sounding, and definitely a bridge between the early US death metal sound of Incantation, Morbid Angel, and the like, and modern, experimental death metal. Close to A World Below is probably their most popular record, and weirdly, also happens to be the least compromising, as far as weird riffs and general intensity.
Dominique, Friday, 22 July 2016 13:46 (seven years ago) link
I just dont like 99% of death metal
Cosmic Slop, Friday, 22 July 2016 15:05 (seven years ago) link
Me neither but Immolation is part of the 1%
cookware regression (Dinsdale), Friday, 22 July 2016 15:40 (seven years ago) link
Cosmic Slop, Friday, 22 July 2016 19:24 (seven years ago) link
been working all day on my ballot and Ive got my top 100 sorted. Top 30 in order now.
Just got to decide whether to order the rest or have the rest unweighted.
Cosmic Slop, Friday, 22 July 2016 20:58 (seven years ago) link
Voting only ends in september, I'm going to listen to a lot of nominations first.
Siegbran, Friday, 22 July 2016 21:18 (seven years ago) link
If anyone wants to check out spacerocky psychedelic doom metal then check out the 5ive albums.
No, not the boyband.
5ive - 5ive
https://open.spotify.com/album/05J5tYEHp8S5o3Dw6oroXv
5ive - Hesperus
https://open.spotify.com/album/5s9fLbUPUB54v1f29ObUwX
that made the 2008 metal poll top 20 i think
Cosmic Slop, Friday, 22 July 2016 21:39 (seven years ago) link
Siegbran how will you cut down your 500 album shortlist to 100?
Cosmic Slop, Friday, 22 July 2016 21:42 (seven years ago) link
Ruthlessly.
Siegbran, Friday, 22 July 2016 21:43 (seven years ago) link
you will need to be ruthless. But it isn't easy.
Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 23 July 2016 12:37 (seven years ago) link
Time for some listening. Has anyone added anything to the Spotify playlist?
Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 24 July 2016 12:41 (seven years ago) link
Just re-voted. Please only use the newest one. Thank you. Sorry about that.
Cosmic Slop, Monday, 25 July 2016 18:04 (seven years ago) link
I'm listening to Vintersorg's Visions From the Spiral Generator now. I bought Till Fjälls back at least ten years ago but never really got into anything else they did-- I think someone from a forum I was on at the time suggested it as an indispensable metal album but I didn't even know they were still going in 2005, much less 2016. Spiral Generator is great so far, definitely going to end up in my bottom 30 or so (reserved for stuff I hadn't heard before assembling a ballot).
Tom Violence, Monday, 25 July 2016 20:00 (seven years ago) link
what year is that from?
Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 26 July 2016 12:02 (seven years ago) link
I think I've settled on my new top 10 in the wake of the new nominations.
Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 26 July 2016 21:37 (seven years ago) link
xpost Spiral Generator was 2002, Till Fjälls was 1998.
Tom Violence, Tuesday, 26 July 2016 22:00 (seven years ago) link
One of the reasons I prefer Spiral Generator to his earlier albums is that it was the first to use outside musicians, rather than just two guys and a drum machine. And it doesn't hurt that the drummer was Asgeir Mickelson and the bassist was Steve DiGiorgio. (Not to say that the pre-Visons stuff wasn't great too.)
Kinda lost track of Vintersorg after Focusing Blur so one of these days I need to binge.
also obligatory fuck yeah for new Coroner
Devilock, Tuesday, 26 July 2016 23:18 (seven years ago) link
oh right, the Coroner mention was in the other thread; not used to having more than one metal thread floating around
Devilock, Tuesday, 26 July 2016 23:24 (seven years ago) link
It's a good thing though. ILM needs the M to be metal.
Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 27 July 2016 12:03 (seven years ago) link
Just had to check if Swallowed - Lunarterial made the list, glad it did 'cos I was listening to it last night and forgot how great it is. It really captures the spirit of those ugly early 90s Finndeath demos/albums but doesn't feel retro, it's violent and atmospheric and utterly horrible in the best way.
ultros ultros-ghali, Wednesday, 27 July 2016 18:04 (seven years ago) link
Listening to Oneida now. It sounds like Trans Am?
Tom Violence, Thursday, 28 July 2016 21:24 (seven years ago) link
Early Oneida was stoner rock then they went in a more Krauty direction
Cosmic Slop, Friday, 29 July 2016 00:06 (seven years ago) link
You listening to Each One Teach One? That's the noisy krautrock masterpiece
Cosmic Slop, Friday, 29 July 2016 00:07 (seven years ago) link
I bet it was 'Secret Wars'
Cosmic Slop, Friday, 29 July 2016 16:40 (seven years ago) link
I dunno why C'mon Everybody Lets Rock wasn't nominated. That's a brilliant album.
Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 30 July 2016 02:15 (seven years ago) link
So would anyone like to campaign for some albums? It's a great way to make sure lesser known albums get listened to and maybe voted into the poll.
For those who have only ever heard Boris 'Pink' or 'Smile' please check out the masterpieces
'Flood'
'At Last : Feedbacker'
'Akuma No Uta'
'Dronevil'
Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 30 July 2016 17:08 (seven years ago) link
There's been some discussion of Imperial Triumphant's Abyssal Gods on this forum already but it seems like every time I play it for someone, they've never heard it before, and they're usually impressed, so I guess if anyone hasn't heard it, you should try it?
Tom Violence, Sunday, 31 July 2016 04:01 (seven years ago) link
Maybe I need to?
Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 31 July 2016 18:49 (seven years ago) link
I played it the other night in plug.dj and you didn't like it due to the death metal vox. It's good stuff though, assuming you can deal with the singing.
Tom Violence, Sunday, 31 July 2016 20:19 (seven years ago) link
Oh, them. Yeah I hated the vox
Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 31 July 2016 23:23 (seven years ago) link
i lasted til they came in, sorry
Cosmic Slop, Monday, 1 August 2016 18:26 (seven years ago) link
I've been looking through some things I haven't heard of and noticed that I Shalt Become - Wanderings is from 1996, just to let people know. So far I've discovered Artificial Brain and Jumalhamara through this but I probably won't be familiar enough for them to make onto my ballot unless I have some space free.
ultros ultros-ghali, Monday, 1 August 2016 19:03 (seven years ago) link
That Refused album came out in 1998, too, I just realized.
Tom Violence, Monday, 1 August 2016 19:13 (seven years ago) link
ok please dont vote for those as they wont be counted.
Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 2 August 2016 00:35 (seven years ago) link
think we have 18 ballots in so far. It's definitely time for everyone to start planning theirs now
Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 2 August 2016 16:16 (seven years ago) link
I'm working on it. The order become more and more arbitrary as it goes down; apart from anything else it's hard to compare, say, Melt-Banana and Agalloch since it depends what kind of mood I'm in.
ultros ultros-ghali, Tuesday, 2 August 2016 16:58 (seven years ago) link
You can do mixed ballots where you can weight any number you like and have the rest unweighted where the unweighted albums will all receive the same number of (low) points. But your #100 album will get more points than it would get if it was weighted, but the higher ones wont get as many as if they were weighted.
Any questions ask seandalai
Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 2 August 2016 17:05 (seven years ago) link
OK cool. I'll think on it.
ultros ultros-ghali, Tuesday, 2 August 2016 17:18 (seven years ago) link
Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 7 August 2016 03:12 (seven years ago) link
Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 7 August 2016 15:56 (seven years ago) link
So who wants to rep for some albums that everyone can check out and maybe vote for?
Now is your chance to get your fave lesser known albums enough of a boost to get them into the rollout!
Cosmic Slop, Monday, 8 August 2016 15:17 (seven years ago) link
Shoegaze fans check out Isis - Oceanic and Isis - Panopticon.
BM fans check out Weakling - Dead as Dreams.
Doom fans check out Warning - Watching From A Distance
Cosmic Slop, Monday, 8 August 2016 15:19 (seven years ago) link
If you're into slooooow heavy music and haven't heard either of those Corrupted albums do yourself a favour and check them out!
And I think I've pushed them before, probably around when they came out, but Spectral Lore - III and Gris – À l'âme enflammée, l'âme constellée... are both modern black metal classics imo (but if you only like bm of the raw variety you probably wouldn't get much out of them)
ultros ultros-ghali, Monday, 8 August 2016 18:19 (seven years ago) link
Also... I'm not sure if many metal thread regulars/lurkers are into avant-prog or whatever but I noticed Lapsus Linguae - You Got Me Fraiche is on the noms list, it's pretty to describe in genre terms: heavy, piano-led art-rock or something like that. Something of an obscure outlier but quite brilliant in parts.
ultros ultros-ghali, Monday, 8 August 2016 18:26 (seven years ago) link
have one guess who nominated it
imago, Monday, 8 August 2016 18:28 (seven years ago) link
actually don't :D
imago, Monday, 8 August 2016 18:28 (seven years ago) link
gonna throw together a ballot for this after revisiting all the stuff from the noms list that i've been into in the past
ciderpress, Tuesday, 9 August 2016 14:25 (seven years ago) link
I count about 49 of these that I have owned at one time or another, and of those about 33 that I could see myself voting for. Not sure if I'll have time to try and explore more of the list, but I could probably submit a ballot with just those.
o. nate, Wednesday, 10 August 2016 01:31 (seven years ago) link
either way is fine!
Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 10 August 2016 11:08 (seven years ago) link
ciderpress, Wednesday, 10 August 2016 11:54 (seven years ago) link
Can we have Yellow Swans, Going Places?
Sunn O))) Brother Where Art Thou? (Chinaski), Wednesday, 10 August 2016 12:28 (seven years ago) link
if we're allowed to add stuff at this stage, can i have Cynic - Traced In Air? would be in my top 5 for sure if it was available
ciderpress, Wednesday, 10 August 2016 13:00 (seven years ago) link
are they definitely out within the time period?
Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 10 August 2016 15:03 (seven years ago) link
Both of those are, yes. As far as I can remember you can vote for things that aren't on the list but they're less likely to place. I tend to just choose from the noms anyway.
ultros ultros-ghali, Wednesday, 10 August 2016 15:14 (seven years ago) link
Seandalai is very strict about using the nominations list to C+P from.
I added them.
Neptune Bingo (Michael B), Friday, 12 August 2016 00:52 (seven years ago) link
I'm going to need to investigate about 95% of the nominees before I prepare a ballot, I guess I haven't been listening to very much metal lately, I'm more of a "heavy rock" guy it seems...
To that end, I think the first two Tomahawk records are pretty unimpeachable, not really metal I guess but to my ears they sound like the kind of music serial killers would make.
it's sort of a layered stunt (sheesh), Friday, 12 August 2016 00:53 (seven years ago) link
Refused is from 1998 so its not eligible for this poll
Cosmic Slop, Friday, 12 August 2016 01:18 (seven years ago) link
So does anyone want to actually talk about albums that were nominated?
Cosmic Slop, Friday, 12 August 2016 23:30 (seven years ago) link
apparently not! is metal dead?
I can only comment on my own noms for the time being, and nobody wants to talk about Tomahawk, so does anyone want to have a go at Probot?
it's sort of a layered stunt (sheesh), Saturday, 13 August 2016 07:59 (seven years ago) link
metal/heavy rock I should say
man I never felt so old as when I just realized I've spent several years of my life in a metal/heavy rock band
it's sort of a layered stunt (sheesh), Saturday, 13 August 2016 08:03 (seven years ago) link
I didn't care much about the Probot
Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 13 August 2016 15:04 (seven years ago) link
Tomahawk was great live but their albums haven't really caught me yet. I think I like Patton's stage presence more than his music, maybe?
I also recently listened to the s/t Mr Bungle album and wasn't impressed. I could swear I used to really like that record.
Tom Violence, Saturday, 13 August 2016 15:25 (seven years ago) link
I swear you used to love it....about a decade ago
Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 13 August 2016 15:58 (seven years ago) link
I feel like I've already repped records like Tara, The Voice Of Steel and Oath Bound an awful lot over the years, but I'd definitely like to throw my weight behind Rammstein Mutter, the finest pop album that metal has produced in two decades, and urge people to give Sabaton Carolus Rex a chance even though the thought of enjoying power metal might sound impossible.
Siegbran, Saturday, 13 August 2016 19:16 (seven years ago) link
I hope people dont forget to check out that Absu album 'Tara' that Siegbran mentions
Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 13 August 2016 20:35 (seven years ago) link
I think Probot is a great idea anyway, what the world needs now is a metal Alan Parsons Project.
Tomahawk's third record is super intresting, though I didn't bother nominating it, doubt they will receive any votes besides my own anyway, but Duane Denison gets his hands on a book of Native American songs, transcibed ~100 years ago, and...that's the record! Never heard anything else like it. Well worth a listen if that sounds remotely appealing to you
it's sort of a layered stunt (sheesh), Sunday, 14 August 2016 07:41 (seven years ago) link
I like tomahawk but they didn't make my longlist of 150 albums
Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 14 August 2016 18:30 (seven years ago) link
I submitted mine! Now I feel anxious that I've missed something obvious.
Sunn O))) Brother Where Art Thou? (Chinaski), Sunday, 14 August 2016 20:49 (seven years ago) link
haha we all do that. Luckily seandalai allows you to resubmit if you do
Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 14 August 2016 21:08 (seven years ago) link
this is going to be harder now that I have more nominations to work with... I swear I'll turn in my ballot soon.
Frobisher, Sunday, 14 August 2016 23:10 (seven years ago) link
You have plenty of time, but a good idea if everyone starts!
Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 14 August 2016 23:28 (seven years ago) link
Voted! Only my top 23 were weighted, though. I didn't have time to rank the rest. Not that voting time was too short, I just only had a few hours per week to listen to stuff, even if I'd devoted my life to listening to and ranking Enslaved albums I only would have gotten halfway through arbitrary half-assed decisions.
Tom Violence, Monday, 15 August 2016 00:54 (seven years ago) link
cheers!
Cosmic Slop, Monday, 15 August 2016 15:01 (seven years ago) link
Isa and Ruun are the enslaved albums i think are good, if that helps
ciderpress, Monday, 15 August 2016 15:03 (seven years ago) link
I think Siegbran likes to pretend Enslaved had split by then?
Cosmic Slop, Monday, 15 August 2016 15:46 (seven years ago) link
I'm not sure I've listened to any Enslaved albums made in the past 15 years! At least, I don't remember any of them.
Frobisher, Monday, 15 August 2016 23:03 (seven years ago) link
Probably your last week to boost albums by campaigning too
Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 18 August 2016 17:31 (seven years ago) link
I should have nommed some Ildjarn or Vordr for this
Neptune Bingo (Michael B), Thursday, 18 August 2016 19:49 (seven years ago) link
Not like you purists to forget to nominate :)
Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 18 August 2016 20:12 (seven years ago) link
Ildjarn doesn't really fit the 2000-2015 timeslot though, unless re-released demo material from the 90s is allowed.
Siegbran, Thursday, 18 August 2016 20:36 (seven years ago) link
its a bit late to argue about that. the months long nominations thread should have covered that.
In future 2 weeks for nominating and 2 weeks voting will be the maximum.
ps never ever let me listen to George again, right? :)
Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 20 August 2016 02:40 (seven years ago) link
Even contenderizer and dj martian arent around
Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 20 August 2016 02:41 (seven years ago) link
Well the genesis of the poll was basically excitement from extreme metal poll carried over, right? I think the hige gaps in the nominations thread kinda killed that zeitgeist
Dont fret yet though. I'm going to turn away from defeatism and start lobbying for all my noms
Drugs A. Money, Saturday, 20 August 2016 03:36 (seven years ago) link
Seriously that Goslings album is the business, folks. Like Merzbow sitting in on a slowed down version of Bardo Pond's Lapsed
Drugs A. Money, Saturday, 20 August 2016 03:38 (seven years ago) link
I'm still tinkering with the order but I'll probably vote today.
Anyway, it doesn't seem to have been mentioned on the noms thread, but whoever nominated Paintbox - Trip, Trance & Travelling is a champ. It's not my usual kind of thing, melodic hardcore, but it's got a good dose of eccentricity and dips into all kinds of things including psych-rock and that incomprehensibly fast type of Japanese hardcore amongst others.
TWO WEEKS LEFT TO VOTE
Cosmic Slop, Friday, 26 August 2016 19:28 (seven years ago) link
I listed to Solstafir's Svartir Sandar a few times in the last month, and it definitely made my ballot b/c of those recent listens. I totally slept on that release in 2011, and missed out - it's excellent. I saw Pallbearer this past week, and loved 'em - would've voted for Foundations of Burden if it was listed, but was happy to vote for Sorrow and Extinction b/c it's probably slightly better for me personally. They opened for Baroness, which had the most weird bro-metal crowd I've ever seen in Chicago (surpassing Mastodon shows). Really just violent hateful little fuckers getting mad at every encroachment on space in Metro from someone that wasn't their buddy - it was weird. Not the loving moshy atmosphere of a Motorhead or Slayer show, that's for sure. Cough's Ritual Abuse should get some love too - their new one is excellent as well.
20 is hardly enough to be very representative. My extreme metal poll had, I don't remember, but about that many and the results were pretty muddled there was a tiny point spread...
C'mon people vote... even just put together a top 5 or 10, it will really help!
Six days left to vote in ILM Lifetime heavy Rock & Metal Poll (Cosmic Slop), Saturday, 3 September 2016 18:51 (seven years ago) link
Obviously I want as many people as possible to vote in this but a low turnout would make the results pretty... interesting. Then again I was thinking the other day about how unpredictable the rollout will be anyway due to a lack of consensus, 10-15 years isn't enough time for records to be established into a canon or whatever. It also doesn't help that in this time frame metal has increasingly fragmented into so many different microgenres and variations.
ultros ultros-ghali, Saturday, 3 September 2016 18:55 (seven years ago) link
I have got no idea what the top 10 will be. It's not like the 70s and 80s who you know who would dominate (sabbath/zep and Metallica/slayer)
Six days left to vote in ILM Lifetime heavy Rock & Metal Poll (Cosmic Slop), Saturday, 3 September 2016 18:58 (seven years ago) link
I dunno if there would ever be enough interest but a 70s metal poll (maybe an 80s one after that) is something I'd fancy trying at some point next year.
Only problem is deciding what counts but that could make the poll thread interesting at least.
Corrupted albums are long tracks but then they do 2 min singles. Must be quite amazing live.
Pretty damn sure you would dig the albums.
You cant tell me this isnt imago music
The band's sound is characterized by down-tuned guitars and bass playing slow, monotonous riffs under deep layers of feedback. The vocals are harsh, guttural growls, and the music alternates between long instrumental sections and sections with vocals which go for long periods of time without rest. They have been described by one writer as "some of the heaviest, gloomiest doom/sludge around, distinctly cacophonous, layering feedback pulverizing progressions into a distinctly cacophonous rumble."[3] However, some songs feature long acoustic sections, spoken-word interludes, and unconventional instruments. An example of the latter can be found on their 2005 album El mundo frio, which is a 72-minute song with extensive sections of harp. As another writer notes, "Right when you think you can peg Corrupted as an all Doom band they release a lush acoustic set within their bleak musical landscape."[1] To this effect, they recently added a keyboardist, Takehito Miyagi, to their lineup, which had previously consisted only of guitar, bass, drums and vocals.
Corrupted has a few idiosyncrasies. Though they are from Japan and their members (including lyricist/drummer Chew Hasegawa) on most releases are all Japanese, they sing almost exclusively in Spanish, though some songs contain sections in Japanese or English. In addition, the band has never taken promotional pictures nor do any of the albums contain group photos. The only known existing photographs are taken by fans at concerts. The band also never does interviews. Corrupted's albums typically contain extensive liner notes in the form of bleak black-and-white photographs, often real-life scenes of war-torn areas or other depictions of human suffering.
Much of Corrupted's discography appears on split albums, which they share with other doom metal bands or often with grindcore bands. The band is known for its ability to produce songs of virtually any length; their longest album El mundo frio consists of a single song substantially longer than an hour, while their shortest song, "Reset", recorded for a homeless benefit compilation, lasts less than two minutes.
As for predictions, I think Electric Wizard, ISIS, and Agalloch will place. Converge maybe, and possibly Baroness.
Knowing ILM I'm sure a Jute Gyte album will show up. I hope an Andrew W.K. album makes the cut, but I kinda doubt it.
Frobisher, Sunday, 4 September 2016 02:20 (seven years ago) link
If the last couple of yearly metal polls is any indication then ILM collectively likes a lot of retro/doom/stoner stuff I'm not really fussed about so I expect a lot of that sort of thing to appear. I think Boris should still do well, at least Pink will I reckon, my highest placed Boris album is the one nobody likes though haha.
Submitted a list of 100. Grueling.
It started out sensibly enough but went deep into the weeds. Somehow I've ended up with albums that should be on there but aren't. Oh well. I realized I forgot quite a few bands that I love, but didn't feel like reshuffling and working them into my ballot. (Sorry, Vektor, Hour of Penance, and Gojira, among others.)
And I have no clue why I never nominated Watain's Sworn to the Dark, Mgla's With Hearts Toward None, DSO's Si Monumentum..., and Funeral Mist's Salvation; I had to go back and find my initial submissions to verify that I indeed forgot them. Oh well. I didn't vote for them, needless to say.
or indeed any DM fans reading please chip in
5 days left to vote in ILM Lifetime heavy Rock & Metal Poll (Cosmic Slop), Monday, 5 September 2016 16:57 (seven years ago) link
my usual 2 cents:
for DM that still carries the old school American sound (ie: Morbid Angel, Incantation, Immolation), it's gotta be the 3 D's: Domains' Sinister Ceremonies, Disma's Towards the Megalith, and Dead Congregation's Graves of the Archangels. And speaking of the classics, Immolation's Close to a World Below and Morbid Angel's Gateways to Annihilation started off the new millennium in a very good way.
For a couple that sound old and dank but lack very obvious lineages, there's Lantern's Below and Begrime Exemious' Visions of the Scourge. The former is very aptly titled because it has a grainy, subterranean sound that makes you feel like a tentative, torch wielding player in a DOS Roguelike. I suppose this could apply to Begrime Exemious as well, except in that case you're madly running from whatever horrible thing you've found at the bottom of the dungeon.
Ataraxy's Revelation's of the Ethereal doesn't have much in the way of song distinction, but it's got a churning, Finnish quality to it that makes for good death metal ambiance.
For maybe the single most relentless, massive, and crushing thing, Lost Soul's Immerse in Infinity is tough to top. It's modern death metal with everything pushed to the red, but sounds clean, clear, and cosmic.
The two best death metal bands of the post-00's (in my opinion) are Anata and The Chasm. The first is Swedish and technical but unlike any other "Swedish" or "technical" band out there: groovy but always shifting percussion, alien guitar melodies and harmonies, and an overall feel of madness dueling with sanity. The Chasm have a vague resemblance to Dissection, in that they take a traditionally listener-unfriendly genre and load it up with more inclusive, almost anthemic qualities -- and every album of theirs feels like a trip into the outer limits. Listen to everything by both of these bands.
Two outliers are Sarpanitum's Blessed Be My Brothers, a sort of cross between Nile's debut and Mithras' Morbid Angel spaciness, and Sickening Horror's The Dead End Experiment, which is very Demilich and oddly swinging.
If you like the meatheaded stuff that still manages a little catchiness, there's Cannibal Corpse's Bloodthirst, Sepsism's Distorting the Mortal Visage, Abnormality's Contaminating the Hive Mind, and maybe Septycal Gorge's more recent two albums.
And finally, for the hallucinogenic occult thing, Obliteration's Black Death Horizon and Swallowed's Lunarterial should send you to a twisted, happy place.
(There have also been Horrendous, Tribulation, and Morbus Chron, the darlings of the underground, but their music goes all over the place.)
Devilock, Monday, 5 September 2016 19:15 (seven years ago) link
for DM wholeheartedly cosign Domains, which IMO is one of the best records period of the 21st Century.
Also repping Khthoniik Cerviiks, all Stargazer, Gorguts' Colored Sands and Immolation's Close to a World Below and Unholy Cult. Also sorry for not voting yet, home internet access down, only have phone and frankly doing a ballot like this seems like torture. Hope to be reconnected soon!
Dominique, Tuesday, 6 September 2016 01:51 (seven years ago) link
yeah I kind of glided by that Domains but it was my #5 of the past decade and a half. There's a musicality in it that lays to waste almost of all of the formless death metal of the 2000-2010s. If they can top Sinister Ceremonies with a sophomore album I will just combust.
https://domainsofdeath.bandcamp.com/album/sinister-ceremonies
And Colored Sands was my #2. It's in a genre of its own. It's the second most tremendous album of the last 15 years behind Ordo ad Chao. Just pure visionary greatness.
Devilock, Tuesday, 6 September 2016 02:29 (seven years ago) link
I don't know who's behind Domains but I feel like either he or they are classically trained -- the way each riff builds into the next and comes back in a crescendo. It's really ridiculous. Every song.
Devilock, Tuesday, 6 September 2016 02:53 (seven years ago) link
It took me four days to realise this was addressed to me, but anyway, I don't find Boris' droney stuff very interesting I'm afraid. I listened to Flood a few weeks ago and found it as tedious as I always do. I know I repped for Corrupted upthread but they're a real anomoly in music taste because my attention span just isn't long enough for most really slow-burning music.
Generally speaking I'm with ultros on not being able to weather most slow-burning music. That I like doom at all is something of a mystery to me, but I think as long as it's brutal/weirdly intricate/emotive enough I can overlook the slowness.
tangenttangent, Friday, 9 September 2016 14:38 (seven years ago) link
sludge is a faster brutal form of doom. then theres stoner rock/metal which is fuzzier and more MC5/Stooges or psychedelic influenced doom.
LAST DAY to vote in ILM Lifetime heavy Rock & Metal Poll! (Cosmic Slop), Friday, 9 September 2016 14:43 (seven years ago) link
and of course there is drone metal and if you like Sunn o))) then you should like Boris drone metal
LAST DAY to vote in ILM Lifetime heavy Rock & Metal Poll! (Cosmic Slop), Friday, 9 September 2016 14:44 (seven years ago) link
I'm not really into doom much -- tho I think it is actually easier to approach than most other extreme metal. I can say I was into Electric Wizard, Sleep and Sunn O))) (let alone Black Sabbath or Trouble) before I was into, say, Autopsy or Darkthrone. Some of that stuff ended up on my ballot, and I actually voted for one funeral doom record too-- there are moments where it hits the spot. Most days tho I want something faster/harder.
As far as sludge, I didn't actually vote for any Melvins or Boris, but I like the early Melvins stuff just fine.
Sunn O))) Brother Where Art Thou? (Chinaski), Friday, 9 September 2016 15:58 (seven years ago) link
I have a lot of almost inarticulable pickiness when it comes to metal. For instance, I don't like a lot of sludge vocals and I couldn't really say why. I also like my metal/psychedelia crossovers to be more esoteric and impenetrable than anything like the Stooges. Sunn0))) on my ballot a little though so I will definitely listen to these Boris tracks.
but since the voting period has been 2 months there is no excuse for not being ready and I would close it bang on time if it were up to me.
Plus if he's ready to do the results I cans tart the rollout before bed
LAST HOUR to vote in ILM Lifetime heavy Rock & Metal Poll! (Cosmic Slop), Friday, 9 September 2016 22:14 (seven years ago) link
Im really interested in how 'comeback' albums do because quite a few 80s and 90s acts came back as good, if not better than before:
esoteric
yob
harvey milk
celtic frost
unsane
swans
carcass
Would expect those to do quite well though , carcass especially should do well.
it's quite good
if my computer hadn't just lost its mouse faculty almost completely i might have made another change to my ballot, putting it higher. but i didn't. so she will have to make up for it
imago, Friday, 9 September 2016 22:57 (seven years ago) link
my list makes no sense but as always I'm looking forward to the rollout; will be here to enjoy the Price Is Right-esque cries of HIGHER and LOWER
(i forgot Thorns, Leviathan, Lykathea Aflame, Inquisition, and albums like Grand Declaration of War; Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice; From Wisdom to Hate; With Hearts Toward None; and Sworn to the Dark)
Slop/sean - please confirm you're using my second one! I got rid of a load from my first one then regretted it
imago, Saturday, 10 September 2016 00:40 (seven years ago) link
oh shit actually I've submitted it a third time. promise this is the final one. i just noticed i'd put one album about 30 or 40 places too high, then changed a couple of other things. now it's all fine. it's good. it's done.
imago, Saturday, 10 September 2016 00:44 (seven years ago) link
its not up to me, so just hope seandalai spots it! but im sure he will always choose the most recent one.
voting was open for 2 months and this is why imago you need to stop leaving things to the last minute
Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 10 September 2016 00:55 (seven years ago) link
I told him you resubmitted a few times so he will tabulate tomorrow (saturday) if he can
Drugs A. Money, Saturday, 10 September 2016 04:23 (seven years ago) link
I voted in a gas station parking lot while out to pick up some ice. Twenty minutes later, I was standing up in my sister's wedding.
Drugs A. Money, Saturday, 10 September 2016 04:24 (seven years ago) link
For a second, I missed the "in" in the last sentence. I thought you said you stood up your sister's wedding so that you could vote in an ILM metal poll.
there wasn't enough time to vote!
Frobisher, Saturday, 10 September 2016 20:11 (seven years ago) link
sorry I didn't vote - metal polls of an "15 year" nature are really hard for me since I've acquired so much damn music in that timeframe. I can do annual but these are too difficult for me to come up with a good list for. I'll enjoy the results though.
Neanderthal, Saturday, 10 September 2016 20:23 (seven years ago) link
now that this thread is in purgatory and I've also remembered yet another band/album that should've made my list, I'll drop Keldian here:
https://keldian.bandcamp.com/album/outbound
you know how sometimes late at night you're fumbling through youtube looking for a half-remembered AOR song from the 80s you're certain you taped off the radio onto a boom box but you can't recall the title ... well Keldian's Outbound is all of those songs
(this doesn't apply to those who had ~cool~ taste in music in the 80s)
