Optimo

Not the song, the club (http://www.optimo.co.uk/). I spend an unhealthy amount of time daydreaming about this club and how much I want to go - see the playlists on the site, it looks awesome. I downloaded one of the Optimo mix cds (the one which opens with 'Some people live all their lives without knowing which path is right....') and it blew me away. Hopefully, I should be heading up to Glasgow in a couple of months to check it out so I just want anyone who's been to tell me what it's like, spill any anecdotes and prattle on about anything else Optimo'y.

It astounds me that a club playing no wave, girl group, classical, punk, soul, krautrock, etc etc etc etc etc can be a huge success but by all accounts it is. Could this happen in Manchester/Liverpool/Kent/Cardiff or is is a Scot thang? Mr Optimo should franchise out the Optimo brandname and become a 21st century Zilkha, or all clubnight-running guys should just rip him off wholesale (I know I intend to).

If Stirmonster is reading, how did you set the whole thing up? Was it a blazing success from the off or did you have to build it up?

Also, if anyone has the mix cd as teasingly described on http://www.optimo.co.uk/download.htm then please please let me get a copy of it somehow (soulseek? cd-r tradey stuff?)

one of the bands i work played a night at optimo, and it was insanity. the place was rammed with kids dancing literally all night and drinking and doing god knows what else to excess. i was told that some employers make people sign waivers that they won't attend, and that as it's on a sunday the party is the city's leading cause of absenteeism. that sounds like an urban legend, but i'd be inclined to believe the latter as one of the afterparties was carrying on into the next afternoon. definitely make the trip up.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 20:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

what a fantastic club! how is the new subby, stirry?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 20:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

Steve, yeah that's exactly the one. Do your damndest to grab a copy. You should get this other Optimo mix off me, I reckon you'll love it. I can send it over MSN while Ssk is down.

I can't believe that a club with *that* music policy is so popular, how on earth has it worked so well? Lauren, what's their secret? And why haven't clubs all over Britain followed suit?

The first I heard of it was in the business pages of The Sun (!) where they mentioned how the djs hung a mic over the crowd dancing, sampled them, made a song out of the noise and played it back out minutes later. Unreal.

Also, is it always on a Sunday? I thought it was a Friday night thing.

Ian SPACK (Ian SPACK), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 20:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

Those scots must be real crazy (and arty) party animals. Always thought scotland was just full of kids with Ocean Colour Scene/Cast/Oasis or Byrds/Big Star/Pavement/Sonic Youth/Neil Young/Pixies/Nirvana albums.

Had that impression the 2 years i spent in Glasgow. The rest of scotland was full of hardcore rave/gabber kids.

Billy, Wednesday, 5 February 2003 20:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

how on earth has it worked so well - i honestly have no idea. i had been playing straight(ish) 4/4 music for ten years and was chomping at the bit to do something a bit different. the oppurtunity to do a sunday night came up and it seemed the ideal night to plunge into the depths of my record collection. really, the intention was to do something for a lot of people i knew who were a bit older and wanted to hear music that doesn't normally get played in a club. for about the first 18 months, we were lucky to get 100 people in but as it was a sunday and we had no expectations, that was great.

then one week three hundred people turned up which we thought was a fluke, but the next week even more turned up and it continued to grow from there. our home, the sub club burned down and we were in temporary homes for three years but returned back 'home' a few months ago. since then it has gone even more ballistic. last sunday there was a blizzard going on outside and we expected it to be really quiet but we had the biggest crowd we have ever had and had to turn a couple of hundred away. it's insane, i tell ya!

the really strange thing for me is that we have a really young crowd who will freak to records they don't know from before they were born! i guess people are bored and want more from their night out. people in scotland also party like their lives depend on it!

we have been lumped in with electroc(l)a$h, post punk, bootlegs, too many djs etc but really, we are none of these things. i follow music, not what anyone else does and doing this in relative isolation up in scotland has been great for us. it means we don't belong to any scene and will always operate outside what is happening in the media. as fads come and go, we will still be here just playing music.

one of the reasons it might have worked is that after ten years of being techno djs, myself and my partner really know how to work a crowd so even though we play all types of music, we put it together in quite an energetic way and mix records that should never work together. i mean who'd have thought mo tucker kept such good time but it's possible to mix live the whole of 'waiting for my man' over some slamming techno track . likewise johnny cash's 'personal jesus' or a whole multitude of other songs. also, using a powerbook live lets me do things that leave people wondering 'how did he do that?'. but most importantly, it's fun - i might play reallly obscure records from the sun city girls, billy childish, the ze or 99 label or whatever but i always know when it is time to give the crowd a dose of fun.

i hope i don't come across all arrogant here. i'm not but i truly love what i do and it is the most enjoyable thing i have ever done in my whole life.

and finally, it CAN work elsewhere - we have taken optimo to new york, paris, helsinki, belfast, munich and stockholm and it worked every time.

if any ILM'ers ever come and don't enjoy themselves i will personally refund their costs for getting here.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 5 February 2003 21:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

My sister lives in Glasgow so I'm sure I'll make it sometime, I had planned to go anyway, though admittedly that was after I'd read the articles which said it was electroclash and post punk. I did look at the setlists linked to ages ago on that other thread and I would definitely go if I was around judging from those.

What is it about this song? Erol Alkan (of Trash) namechecks it in this month's Jockey Slut. I really must try to make it sometime. I missed thema at Auto too, despite being there. I was probably stuck in the murderous beer queue. Unfortunately whenever I'm up in Glasgow I'm usually travelling back down south on a Sunday. I will get there though.

"the really strange thing for me is that we have a really young crowd who will freak to records they don't know from before they were born!"

that's what really struck me about the night. the crowd went mad whether they knew a track or not. there is no way to manufacture that kind of enthusiasm, and it's really exciting to see.

Sort it out the week before Christmas, ___. You don't want to be desparately looking for a place in a few days once you arrive in London, surely? You often can't move in straight away anyway. London accommodation is crappy and it takes a while to find something good unless you hear about something ON THE GRAPEVINE.

Why is there a different release date for the Kill the DJ mix in the UK (apparently 31 January) compared to other markets? Kind of seems to run contrary to many record labels' concerns about P2P and means desperate punters are going to do their bit to support international mail services

angus-macdonald (Audiophonics), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 19:08 (nineteen years ago) link

I like thinking of myself as a desperate punter. I will buy it in January, though. I have too many records to buy.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 19:10 (nineteen years ago) link

the delay in the uk release was because the uk press people wanted longer to promote it. as it had already been available on soulseek for months before the european release, p2p concerns had ceased to exist.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 17 November 2004 19:13 (nineteen years ago) link

You can order it from Amazon in France or Germany - but whens the Vinyl going to be available? And will it be the same deal again, mainland Europe gets it early?

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 19:35 (nineteen years ago) link

It's available at Forced Exposure and Other music. I got my copy yesterday @ Twisted Village. The licensing process must have been insane...

Who are the 2 cover stars?

And Is kill the dj records just going to be for mix cds?

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 19:39 (nineteen years ago) link

vinyl should be available simultaneously in europe and the uk in january.

i would find it hilarious if i didn't get about ten emails a day asking me these questions.

michael - the cover stars are two incredibly shady guys from glasgow. kill the dj was initially only a mix / re edit series but will also i believe release original material too.

The licensing process must have been insane...

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 14:43 (nineteen years ago) link

More wisdom from the NME - New Order are also tipped as "Dance is all set for a second coming"

ha Does this mean a "Muzik" dance type section will return to the NME?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 14:50 (nineteen years ago) link

more comedy from the NME, they have Khonnor tagged as "Dance music Revived" when this album is abstract folktronica !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 15:03 (nineteen years ago) link

optimo = trash without the fit indie sluts.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 16:00 (nineteen years ago) link

I believe Twitch was passed a note last week that said:

"COngratulations. The best club in Glasgow has now turned into Shack"

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 16:02 (nineteen years ago) link

o good, does this mean i can claim i didn't enjoy optimo at new year because "it's gone shit", rather than the real reason (ie i'm too fucking old and sad these days)?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 16:07 (nineteen years ago) link

totally dud - posting on threads about yrself, but wtf.

i think the press we're getting 'cos of the mix cd will actually really fuck the club up for the worse. it happened before with a club i did called 'pure' and within 6 months of being in various magazines the club was full of idiots. oh well. i suppose we can always get whitehouse in to be the resident band for a few months.

and who needs fit indie sluts when you can have fit gay jeds?

stirmonster, Wednesday, 12 January 2005 16:15 (nineteen years ago) link

i've been doin my best to bring optimo to everyone's attention, it's long due recognition

x-post: ah, pure. wish i'd gone.

every week, my big norwegian mate kristian would go. every week, he would dance like a six-foot-four, shaven-headed, bug-eyed loon for several hours. every week, at four o'clock in the morning, he would bang on my door (i'd just be back from the mission or somewhere, heheheh) and yell how it had been the best night of his life.

happy days.

hey mark, you're interviewing one of us? i hadn't heard about that. and yup, i've always used the name stirmonster on the internet but i guess there's no way to necessarily make the connection.

I wonder what will happen, on the 22nd.

hopefully a good time will be had.

Stirmonster, the club Pure had some connection to the band The Honeymooners, didn't it? Or am I getting muddled?

ronan - still no word on the vinyl. the delay is doing my head in.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 22 February 2005 16:27 (nineteen years ago) link

I only found out recently (such is the way the power structures work) that you guys are provisionally booked to play our club, so maybe I'll get to play a few records with you yet! (again depending on the weirdo power games that go on with our night)

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 19:38 (nineteen years ago) link

that certainly is a weird power structure if you didn't know! next time tayo emails i should request that you play with us.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 22 February 2005 19:44 (nineteen years ago) link

I'll explain all sometime! It's great considering I'm only DJing a short time, a good position to be in as a resident at a successful and busy club. But I'm starting to try and get involved in more of my own thing aswell with the guys from the shop, which is exciting too at the moment.

I was at the meeting where we discussed who to book, just not actually in the office or there when the bookings are made!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 19:49 (nineteen years ago) link

stirry, for what's it's worth, the Kill The DJ 2CD thing was very good -- even if i dont know how i feel about owning something with depeche mode on it. congrats on a job well done.

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 19:53 (nineteen years ago) link

Coming to accept Depeche Mode as part of music's rich tapestry is one things Optimo has brought to my life.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 19:58 (nineteen years ago) link

thanks jack. for the record, i used to have a massive problem with depeche mode until an ex girlfriend gave me 'black celebration' and i saw the light.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 20:29 (nineteen years ago) link

phil - you should email me. we have a policy that if it's anyone's birthday they shouldn't have to pay into the club. i don't see why this shouldn't apply in nyc so i'll happily put you on the guest list.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 22 February 2005 20:31 (nineteen years ago) link

Ooh - I never knew this rule. That makes this May Day's Optimo potentially even sweeter. Though the prospect of it being completely rammed because of the bank holiday makes it less so.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 20:38 (nineteen years ago) link

tribeca grand parties are almost always free, you just need to get on the guest list the week of the party. i imagine the emails will go out early next week.

rm265, Tuesday, 22 February 2005 20:41 (nineteen years ago) link

i'll be working so i'll miss tribeca grand. but todd p's space is awesome. plus no velvet rope/douchebag bouncers/$8 beers.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 20:42 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah. tribeca grand parties are always free, which somewhat offsets the $10 drinks. thanks though! i'll come say hello. i think jdh or maybe it was someone else mentioned having an afterparty at this nearby loft. is teamy going to be in town too?

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 20:50 (nineteen years ago) link

Lucky you N, my birthday this year falls on Good Friday, the only day in the entire year on which all pubs, clubs, and off licenses in Ireland are closed. disgusting. No clubnight the night before either as a result

you should see an Irish off licence with a half an hour till closing time on the Thursday, it's like a scene from a shopping centre in an armageddon movie.

yup, 4999 other people. it seems the first batch of 5000 have this manufacturing flaw which wasn't discovered until after they had been shipped to the shops. tigersushi will replace any of the ofeending copies if they are sent back to them direct (which i can appreciate is probably more effort than anyone is going to be bothered with).

Here's a question for anyone with the How to Kill the DJ pt 2 mix...just bought it today, and about halfway through the "one more tune" crowd chant at the end, there's a loud *POP*. Apologies for the trivial question, but I'm wondering if I've got a bum CD or if it's there in the mix- it's really quite startling.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Saturday, 10 September 2005 20:46 (eighteen years ago) link

I think there were some problematic CDs in the first run, possibly mentioned on this thread at some point.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 10 September 2005 20:50 (eighteen years ago) link

It is mentioned somewhere up there. Second press is ok so return it and get that.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Saturday, 10 September 2005 21:36 (eighteen years ago) link

Thanks. Where would I return it to, though? Tigersushi and Kill the DJ are both in Paris, and returning it to Insound might be a gamble on getting the same pressing again. Is there a US distributor I could get in touch with?

God, I feel silly about this. But those POPs (found another one, in the "Dexter" segment) will haunt me to my dying day otherwise. I'm totally compulsive about this kind of thing...

Telephonething (Telephonething), Saturday, 10 September 2005 21:43 (eighteen years ago) link

i've never heard of there being one in the 'dexter' segment before - odd. i'm not sure who the us distributor is but i know forced exposure did some distro on it. david day from forced exposure posts here so you could ask him. otherwise, i could burn you a cdr from the master (if i can find it).

i think it's so funny that insound now carries the kill the dj comp. a few years back i recommended that they might start stocking tigersushi, as it seemed to be just the sort of "dance music" their indie buyers would lap up like warm milk -- and i got a really snide response from someone there that they just didn't have time to listen to all the "electronic music" out there. guess they found time.

many thx

it was a pressing of one copy! they did one test pressing (which i have) but they messed it up and missed off the arthur russell track. i waited and waited for them to do another test pressing but that was the last i ever heard about it. sadly i am almost certain it will never see the light of day now. i keep meaning to change the info on the website. in fact, i'll go and do that now.

really really liking the florence & machine remix but i don't dj with vinyl and can't find an mp3 of it - says here that "Optimo take on one of the hottest bands around - florence & the machine. supplying two remixes which will never be released on any other format" booooo. twitch, if you're around, check your myspace!

that feature is odd as i met those guys on the night and they seemed to know what the club was. they were telling me they have been doing a sunday night club in sydney for ten years. is that right?

also, i should point out, we have lots of lights. in fact, we are ALL about the lights. i guess he was going for dramatic effect there.

it was the krikor edit with a loop of this insanely heavy felix da housecat drum track mixed over it.

OK, so about 1:44:00 into Optimo's incredible Essential Mix, they drop this jaw-dropping remix of "Hallogallo", labeled as the "Mary Hill Rework". I have been searching for this thing for well over a year and a half, and the only other mention I can find of it is on http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/shows/5956. Has anyone ever come across this before?? Was it rereleased under a different moniker/title/etc? I would kind of sell my kidney to get a hold of this...

i'm afraid the remix of "hallogallo" was never released. it was done by jg wilkes and we did talk about putting it out but that idea fell by the wayside somewhere along the line.

dmr, Saturday, 14 November 2009 00:26 (fourteen years ago) link

are they pre-selling Field tickets? usually it's just on the door but when they do pre-sell some sub club gigs i think it's only half in advance so you should get in easily if you turn up just before the doors open.

jed_, Saturday, 14 November 2009 00:31 (fourteen years ago) link

that's the other worry. I think I'm seeing the Flaming Lips with a friend that night, which means (depending on where that gig is) I won't be making to the Sub Club until gone 11. Would be pretty annoyed if I missed The Field in order to see the Flaming Lips.

wow! almost as blown away by the activity on this thread as i was by sunday night. :)

here's a few responses -

Haha and instead we get Suicide. ("Ghostrider" would have been too obvious I guess!)

"ghostrider" was cueued up at one point!

what's this playing under TV On The Radio?

"walking trough heaven" by chris and cosey

though they do seem to be hitting a lot of classics tonight.

i had lots of new music and things i'd never managed to but always wanted to play with me. i also had the greatest hits of optimo. we could have played literally anything we wanted to but i think one of the things about the night was always picking up on the energy of the crowd, and sunday simply felt like the greatest party i've ever been to. it would have felt too self indulgent to have done anything else than to have played a party set (it would also have been a bit rough on the several hundred who didn't get in who went home to listen or remained outside and were listening on their phones).

we recorded the night with microphones placed around the club to capture the crowd noise. i haven't heard the awdio stream but i have a feeling you are only getting 50% of the story. the noise from the dancefloor was astonishing (there's quite a few points where we cut the music and they are singing along). we also had a secondary sound system in for the night and when we switched that on around midnight, the roar was deafening. the second pa also made mixing quite tricky so i'm going to blame any shoddy mixing on that. :)

i'll check how the recording came out next week and will then hopefully post up a link to the full recording with crowd noise.

d'you reckon there's still a queue?

there was still a queue at 2.30am. most people had given up by then but a few determined folks waited it out so we squeezed them in. we estimate that around 1500-2000 tried to get in. by opening so early, we thought a lot of people would come for a few hours and then leave so others could get in but it simply didn't happen. almost everyone wanted to stay until the end.

Wicked Game (Trentemoller Businessman Dubby Games Remix)

thanks! only ever had a white label and never knew who had done it.

last couple were The Chain by Fleetwood Mac and Seven Days by Chuck Wood.

it was meant to end with nina but then the club owner grabbed the mic and made a wee speech. i didn't want that to be the last thing ever heard at the club so played some more.

so did you have 400 people in from the start? sounded like there was a major switch to dancier stuff around 10.30-11 but i guess with so little room for dancing that wasn't really an issue anyway. xp

french air traffic control strike prevented us getting to paris. the metz gig isn't happening but we are back in paris in november.

Great fun in NY sunday night of labor day weekend. Actually glad they showed up late and we stuck around. Had they showed up as planned we probably would've left after an hour or two because we're lame, but the flight had them start at 2:30, and after staying that long we weren't going to miss the end. Don't know if it was the existence of Horse Meat Disco (who I saw the day before at ps1) in house, but Optimo got VERY menergetic.

Boiler Room mix is a fun listen. hearing the way the Andres track sounds after an hour of other tunes gave me a better idea of why people like it so much. before I thought it was just ok, now I kinda get how you'd hear it in a mix and go "ahhhhhhh yeah." (never heard it out.)

dmr, Monday, 7 January 2013 22:38 (eleven years ago) link

who gets invited to these Boiler Room things? crowd in this one seems pretty ok, at least people are dancing. in some of them it looks like mostly corny camera mugging and looking over the DJ's shoulders.

Optimo Music clashes with Sony over post-punk compilation

The major label took exception to the phrase "Now That's What I Call..." in the record's title.

The sleeves of Optimo Music's forthcoming post-punk compilation will be destroyed after the label received a cease and desist letter from Sony.

Sony's objection to the compilation's original title, Now That's What I Call DIY! (Cult Classics From The Post-Punk Era 1978-82), which it says infringed its copyrighted Now That's What I Call Music! series. Optimo Music head JD Twitch told RA: "I couldn't reach agreement with Sony to modify the existing sleeves that was either satisfactory to them or cost effective to me, so the original sleeves will be destroyed." He says the process cost "several thousand pounds," adding: "While the whole thing has been a nightmare and extremely annoying, really, the only person I am angry with is myself for not even considering it might be an issue. I totally appreciate that Sony are perfectly entitled to vigorously pursue copyright infringement." Sony is yet to respond to RA's request for comment.

The repackaged compilation, now titled [Cease & Desist] DIY! (Cult Classics From The Post-Punk Era 1978-82), will see release on October 30th. As previously reported, the compilation pulls together weird and rare post-punk music from the late '70s and early '80s. The 16-track double-vinyl version comes with detailed notes of each track written by JD Twitch, as well as an introduction by Dan Selzer.

title is one of those things that feels so wholly embedded in the lexicon, it seems weird that it might actually be owned by a litigious multinational

It’s around when I think I found my first Neu! album in Glasgow. I was looking for one for over a decade. Neu! were this mythical band that I had no way of hearing; I used to imagine what they might actually be like.

This is so identifiable. I still vividly remember hearing “Hallogallo” for the first time online when Grönland reissued it in 2000. Having read about them for over a decade before actually being able to listen to them it was a combination of hearing exactly what I’d imagined them to be like and being surprised and overwhelmed by it at the same time.

"Silly Games" is an all time favourite of mine (see below if interested) and one night recently I couldn't sleep so decided to take the A Cappella singing from the film and weld it to Dennis Bovell's dub mix of "Silly Games". Isn't it great how this crazy time we're living in has pushed you to reacquaint with old and overlooked joys like long walks and Walkmen? I've found increased pleasure in bike rides, an old Yamaha QY70 pocket workstation and drawing like a madman.

here's the audio if anyone wants it - shhhh!

I knew there was a reason I just checked back in to ILM. I don't have a tape player but I feel the urge to get a hard copy just because of the bespoke case design!

Hollow Hills is the ultimate goth song in my book, I'd be interested to find out what the song immediately after that is.

the one immdeiately after is this (which will possibly take on a different significance if the listener grew up in Britain).

Wikipedia:

Rosa Mundi was the name of a very short-lived electronic music supergroup which consisted of Rose McDowall, John Balanceand possibly Peter Christopherson.[citation needed] The group is credited for "The Snow Man" which appeared on the compilations The Final Solstice and The Final Solstice II and the split 7" vinyl Grief. It is also credited on the song "Christmas Is Now Drawing Near" from the Coil single Winter Solstice: North, later released on Moons Milk (In Four Phases). Since both songs, "The Snow Man" and "Christmas Is Now Drawing Near", were both originally released in 1999, it can be said that this is the only year the group functioned.

However, the song "Rosa Decidua" from the 1998 Coil EP Autumn Equinox: Amethyst Deceivers, while not credited to Rosa Mundi, has exactly the same line-up.[citation needed]

Alternatively, some critics have inferred that "Rosa Mundi" is simply an alternative name for Rose McDowall, and not the name of a group at all.

This is like that time I tried to read Lanark.

“Raise Your Hands If You Understand (Ambient House & E Musik from the early Rave era)"

At the start of the 1990s as the Rave scene exploded it was such a new thing for so many people that they often didn’t know what the music was, nor did they have the vocabulary to describe it. I was DJing every Friday night at Pure in Edinburgh and frequently had people come up and ask me to play some of that “E music” I always played. It took me a while to figure out what they were asking for and then I realised exactly what it was; it was a sound I played a lot as a counterpoint to the frenetic and hardcore sounds of the day. It was atmospheric, often tripped out and hypnotic, synth heavy, full of emotion, and yes, sometimes ecstatic. “E Musik” became MY genre and complements the new age, Utopian, proto trance, Ambient House sound, which was an actual thing at the time.

Many of the records these tracks are from were played so often in very intense and extreme club conditions that they are in less than pristine condition, so please forgive some of the less than perfect audio here (I actually spent many hours editing out a lot of the worst scratches). As the record says, “Come together in peace & harmony”

Tape comes in a hand-stickered opaque white case with riso printed OBI-style banderole, with artwork designed by Andrew J Beltran and printed by Sundays.

We now have a subscription operating so a smaller batch of tapes will be on sale, one batch @ 10.00 UK time & a 2nd smaller batch for US folks @ 17.00 UK time.

I’m loving this mix and I’ve had it on a loop now for days. Several of the tracks I already knew and liked but this is definitely greater than the sum of its parts. Feels like they were meant to be together.

That said, could I get a track ID for the song that starts about 5 mins in with the really sustained keyboard note that leads into Holy Ghost Inc? It’s beautiful

I am using your worlds, Wednesday, 30 June 2021 19:05 (two years ago) link

And when I say “greater than the sum of its parts” all the individual parts are also exceptional so that’s a double compliment

That track is "Enlightenment" by Andre "Phenix" Estrada (one of 3 tracks he is involved with on the mix). It's a bit of an outlier as it is from a couple of years later than anything else on there.

Caught the closing “Watching Trees” takeover at Field Manouvers a few weeks back and it was full of brilliant moments - perfect end to the festival.

Some funny edits/mash-ups from that guy. New to me. Some pretty hip sources. Mass? A dance edit of Henry Badowski's Baby Sign Here With Me? Not sure how I feel about it all.

dan selzer, Monday, 23 October 2023 17:33 (six months ago) link

he's done some great stuff, that one just made me laugh because of the place that booker t tune has in british (or should that be english?) culture

(would say more, but don't want to spoil the surprise)

(probably have already though)

ha ha! i'm surprised it took so long for anyone to do that. first few times i ever played the liquid liquid track several people asked "what was the track that sounded a bit like the cricket theme?". for non Brits, soul limbo is synonmyous with cricket here as it is / was the tv theme tune for a long time.

mr bleaching agent is a good pal of mine. he told me he had done a ton of edits but i hadn't got as far as hearing this one yet.

listened to it again and it actually bangs, would totally lose my mind if I heard that out at just the right moment.

just clocked the lifetones sample on the 4th track on that release, bloody lovely that!

Got my Optimo package from monorail today. And only a dozen emails from the royal mail tracking its progress along the way!

dan selzer, Friday, 2 February 2024 23:35 (three months ago) link

v. happy you picked that up. royal mail have gone email mad in recent times - i am bombarded by their updates.

stirmonster, Saturday, 3 February 2024 05:12 (two months ago) link

Also looking forward to the chips.

Thought this might be the right place to ask, but is the Naum Gabo LP getting widely distributed in UK?

Bandcamp are charging international shipping, and I can see Phonica has vinyl copies (Juno out of stock already), but I have a local store I like to order from if its possible.

Sounding great from what I have heard.

my opinionation (Hamildan), Tuesday, 12 March 2024 09:58 (one month ago) link

it deffo has UK distribution. i don't know who the distributor is though i'm afraid.

Enjoyed listening back to this newly uploaded set from Field Maneuvers last year: https://soundcloud.com/resident-advisor/ra-live-optimo-field-maneuvers-uk

Unless my memory is playing tricks on me there was even more after this recording ends though?

Chewshabadoo, Friday, 29 March 2024 12:15 (one month ago) link

i think that was right near the end no? i have to confess i don't recall how the set ended.

stirmonster, Saturday, 30 March 2024 00:20 (one month ago) link

Well it was the end of a rather heavy weekend so I could very well have a loose grip on the facts! I trust you :D

Chewshabadoo, Saturday, 30 March 2024 10:59 (one month ago) link

One thing I will say is that one of my friends still hasn’t forgiven you both for teasing “Boys” and then not playing it! You know what to do at Watching Trees…

Chewshabadoo, Saturday, 30 March 2024 11:01 (one month ago) link

ha! i don't recall, that either and was 100% sober.
