nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 28 March 2003 14:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

Q for Geir - would you like "Goodnight" if McCartney sang it?

"Goodnight", like around half of The White Album, is a parody, with none of the harmonic sophistication usually associated with Paul.

However, I forgot one Paul song in my worst-of list. The awful "Helter Skelter" is probably ridning very high in that list.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 28 March 2003 15:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Helter Skelter" kicks ass! That's one of the few songs that reminds me how crazy, cool and utterly rockin' Paul could be when he wanted to.

Could someone explain the appeal of "Within You, Without You" to me. I mean it's cool if you're tripping or whatever and when the tabla beat comes in at the beginning I like it, but it's not really so special to me.

"Helter Skelter" kicks ass! That's one of the few songs that reminds me how crazy, cool and utterly rockin' Paul could be when he wanted to.

He shouldn't.

Paul McCartney has always best at ballads. That's when he is at his melodically and harmonically most exciting. His rock'n'rollers are sound like The Beatles didn't actually happen at all, and that nothing had happened musically since 1957 or so.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 28 March 2003 18:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

what's surprising is that (relatively) so many folks like "savoy truffle" enough to put it in their top 10. i mean, isn't "savoy truffle" seen as one of their throwaway tunes?

(i was one of those "savoy truffle" fans, and i think it's an underrated bit of witty, concise 'classical' songwriting)

and I forgot about "I Want You (She's So Heavy)"

no arguments with what anyone's said above:
"Sexy Sadie", "Girl", etc are some of the best things ever

"Cry Baby Cry" is another strange one, especially since Lennon disavowed it in one interview
the version of "Across The Universe" on Rarities is the one to get
no one's tapped "The Inner Light" yet

Paul (scifisoul), Sunday, 30 March 2003 12:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Revolution 9" -- as put by Ian MacDonald, the most widely distributed avant garde cultural artifact of all time.
"Glass Onion"
"A Day in the Life"
"Tomorrow Never Knows"
"Because"
the final few minutes of "I Want You (She's So Heavy)"
"Across the Universe"
"Mean Mr. Mustard"/"Polythene Pam"
"Birthday"
"Wild Honey Pie"

As is obvious, I'm more of a fan of post-peak, pre-rooftop-concert Beatles. (And yes I put that last one on there to piss someone off.)

In the case of The Beatles, "Tomorrow Never Knows", "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "I Am The Walrus" will be forgotten in 100 years. "Yesterday" and "Hey Jude" and "Michelle" will not.
Innovation means nothing in the long term.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 29 February 2004 02:34 (twenty years ago) link

Well aside from that disastrous innovation theory, i just think the fact that he chose 'Strawberry Fields' in his TOP 1O and then dismissed it a year later shows one side of Geir doesn't know what the other side's doing.

4. Across The Universe
5. I Wanna Hold Your Hand
6. Here There & Everywhere
7. Rain
8. Norwegian Wood
9. Dear Prudence
10.I Saw Her Standing There

A fairly spontaneous list that could change significantly day by day, except for #1 which is an eternal favourite. I don't really value Lennon songs THAT much over McCartney songs - it's just the way the list turned out. And personally, I prefer all three of Harrison's much-maligned "sitar songs" to "Savoy Truffle."

What abt "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft"?
That one didn't sound like The Beatles. "Sub Rosa Subway" did though. :-)

-- Geir Hongro (geirhon...) (webmail), March 28th, 2003.

"Calling Occupants" has a mellotron intro a la "Strawberry Fields" and a total "I Am the Walrus" electric piano part.

"Calling Occupants" has a mellotron intro a la "Strawberry Fields" and a total "I Am the Walrus" electric piano part.

But also a very 1976 production that sounded way more like ELO or 10cc than like The Beatles.

Sgt. Pepper is BOE-RING

in no order

1. Savoy Truffle
2. Sexy Sadie
3. I Want You
4. Hey Bulldog
5. Blue Jay Way
6. I Me Mine
7. Two of Us
8. Money
9. Mean Mr. Mustard
10. Day Tripper

I like the Beatles pretty swell, but they sure are overrated. "Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da" almost by itself cancels out the considerable musical cachet achieved by the songs on my list.

I kind of wish I could've gotten "I'm Only Sleeping" onto this list, but there are plenty of bands--some of whom with fewer songs in their catalogue--for which making such a list would be far far more difficult for me.
