Create your own profile (which seems to be based on the Audioscrobbler system).. then listen to personal streaming radio based on your preferences.

You can say whether you like or hate a particular track it's playing and it'll record your preferences and send you music that other people who have similar tastes to yours like...

Wish we had a decent broadband service in NZ. You pay through the nose for international traffic.

i used this for a while but got ditracted by download sites - it is good though - i must check it out again. very diverse and often surprising selections.

I've only been on for about 30 minutes now, but I'm definitely enjoying it. I'm curious to hear how the selection will be once I've added more songs to my profile.

You're not beholden to listening to your own profile radio. You can pick other users or customize by clicking 'find a station' and entering a list of artists.

lex you can also listen to "neighbours" and "friendslist" radios. you've only been on a few days so it may not have had time to correlate yr neighbours (ppl with matching interests), but with that and general clicking around and preview listening i've found a few artists here and there with last.fm, not to mention ppl who you can then P2P with :-)

To listen to personal radio you have to donate. Unless they still do the free personal radio for the 1st month you sign up.

lex pretend, Thursday, 22 February 2007 20:10 (seventeen years ago) link

Did you download the LAST FM player? I'm pretty sure you need to be a subscriber to listen to personal radio. And obviously you don't have any neighbours yet to use that radio.
Just go to a random page and try listening to that persons radio (I don't recommend mine as I'm sure you would hate it). All you should need to do is click on where it says PLAY "insert name"'s Radio Station. See if that works.

I think you're on a mac though but I don't think that should make a difference.
I'm not sure if you can use TAG radio without subscribing. You can always just do a search for some act you like and select their radio

Try this Similar Artists To Ciara
Hopefully that will work.

1. Denki Groove
2. P-Model
3. Ween
4. They Might Be Giants
5. Underworld
6. Scooter
7. Yellow Magic Orchestra
8. Happy Mondays
9. Ryuichi Sakamoto
10. The Bran Flakes

kinda surprised by this list, I guess TMBG and the Bran Flakes do put like 20-30 songs on their albums, just surprised Sakamoto ranked so high too

my top tracks is compiled almost entirely of things i've listened to consistently over a period of years, but in the past few weeks there's one song that's beginning to creep up there even though i've only known it for that period of time. is that right? does it really deserve to be there??? Dom, don't you know you can just turn the scrobbler off? It's usually in your task-bar... right click, exit. Turn it back on when you'd like to scrobble something "less embarassing".

I have a playlist of motivational German-language songs to put on when I ought to be doing my German homework. I've often considered turning scrobbling off for them, because they are not really my favourite songs in the world ever and I don't want my entire last.fm top 20 to be made up of them. Haven't bothered yet though.

(On the other hand, I put the playlist on every couple of weeks and I'm not completely sick of them yet, so I guess that says something for them.)

I'm pretty bummed out about the Android app not working. I use my phone as my portable music player and virtually all my digital listening is done this way, and I really liked having it log all my songs because I use the gig recommendations RSS feed to notify me when bands I like are playing live. That's pretty much the main reason I even have a last.fm account.

Apart from the official app (which has always been shit, but at least it used to scrobble tracks), I've tried Simple last.fm Scrobbler, Scrobb, Last.fm for Android and none of the bastards work.

All I want from Last.FM is for it to log what I listen to over the weeks/months/years and to display this in list form. That's all. And the android app does not do this and never has.

boat of boats (dog latin), Tuesday, 23 June 2015 09:57 (eight years ago) link

The old Android app used to scrobble for me, certainly worked a lot better than the Itunes scrobbler which never worked from my ipod properly, used to randomly scrobble about 5% of songs I listened to.

Apart from scrobbling the old app was total shit though. The events list had the wrong dates on it! The further in the future the gig was, the more inaccurate the date would be. I dunno how they managed that, probably takes some effort to code something that badly.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 23 June 2015 10:04 (eight years ago) link

So, I've just heard from a good friend of mine that uses this thing quite a lot that apparently they've just rolled out the new site today, but unfortunately it seems that last.fm have decided to not complete work on the site before rolling it out, so the general vibe is that last.fm have half-assed it. I'm hearing about disabled features all over the place, the site generally not working properly and things going missing, coupled with the fact that it doesn't seem like many folks are keen on the new layout to begin with.

I looked over to the last.fm website support forum out of curiosity, and as you'd expect there's plenty of whining.

It looks like some people have had duplicate scrobbles return that they got rid of ages ago, and private messages that they'd deleted returning to their inboxes etc.

A couple of months back, we launched a BETA version of the new Last.fm to registered users and now we're ready for it to go live to everyone.

The new, re-imagined Last.fm includes a host of innovative features that will help users better navigate, explore and enjoy an infinite universe of music.

Some of the features included are:
The new User Homepage - which includes tracks, albums, artists and events (with even more to come) - surfaces all the music you are sure to love in one handy place. Whether it's a brand new release or a forgotten favourite, click play to listen instantly via the new Last.fm Playbar
Last.fm Live lets you visualise in real-time the listening habits and trends of Last.fm's global community. It does this by using a series of interactive widgets that surface trending music, artists, most loved tracks and more. Essentially, what Last.fm users are listening to and where.
A new Library Explorer, which enables you to delve deep into your listening history to rekindle those distant memories. What were you listening to on that hazy day back in Summer 2009? Last.fm can tell you exactly that.
The new Last.fm Playbar, gives you access to a huge catalogue of music by pulling in music from multiple streaming sources and staying with you across the site wherever your Last.fm journey takes you.
Last.fm has also added Metacritic scores to album pages. Metacritic aggregates music reviews from leading critics around the world; meaning you can now see what scores albums are given by tastemakers alongside our listening data from fans.
By surfacing Last.fm's listening data and music in new and more relevant ways, we're able to offer users the strongest, most personalised music recommendations around. Last.fm does this by connecting the most popular places to listen, watch and share music - from Spotify to YouTube, iTunes to Tidal - while organising your listening history and introducing you to music based on your tastes.
Love,
Last.fm

Jesus. My events are all wrong now as well, they've reverted to some earlier version.

This is quite impressively botched, to the point where it's so bad I can't help but think the new company strategy is to lose some users, maybe there are too many putting strain on the servers at the moment so they've deliberately designed something so broken and awful that people won't want to use it? I just can't believe their developers had a meeting and said yeah this is good, well done good job everyone.

I actually can believe that. The native OSX client hasn't worked properly in forever at this point, it always crashes. Their forum has a ton of posts about it, but no one at last.fm has addressed it as far as I can see. I mean, having the ability to scrobble is their entire business model. Why wouldn't you fix that?

Getting rid of the neighbours/compatibility rating thing would be quite possibly one of the most stupid things last.fm could ever do, IMO.

As an example of how not to build a UGC community platform that alienates your entire community. No-one listened to feeback from users and they just went and ploughed ahead with changes so that they can generate more advertising revenue.

Disabling the Delete Account function is sneaky as well because the one thing you don't want to get out into the digital media sphere is that thousands of users in your active user base deleted their accounts within hours of a change over because they hates it.

Thankfully, Twitter still exists to vent.

fucking awful =/

soyrev, Monday, 17 August 2015 22:40 (eight years ago) link

They haven't recovered since.

They never will. If there's one thing that's true about the internet, it's that a site which was popular and then found itself being painfully NOT popular will never EVER be popular again. You'll scrape by for a few years catering to your remaining userbase and you might, like Myspace, try to shift the focus to bring in a different group of users, but you're toast and you know it and everybody else knows it. Might as well kill the site and try again with something new.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 17 August 2015 22:55 (eight years ago) link

Oh yeah, MySpace is completely fucked at this stage and has been for years, and I'm actually quite surprised it still exists. It's one of those sites that I keep assuming was taken offline years ago, and whenever I'm reminded that it's still around my reaction is always "MySpace is still going!?" - I don't know of a single person who still uses it, and everyone that I know that did switched to Facebook a long time ago.

As for last.fm, all it's going to take at this stage, given the negative reaction that the new layout has received, is for a bright spark to somehow come up with a better alternative and that'll be it, I reckon.

you're toast and you know it

Funnily enough, the moment I read this I started singing it as per the Michael Jackson song.. "you're toast, you're toast, you know it! dah!"

All I used this site for was a plug in which showed me my top 20 albums from the previous week and the previous year. This doesn't work anymore but that could be a good thing? I stupidly often found myself listening to stuff with the express purpose of pushing it up my charts so I could see the thumbnail in my "top listens"

If this kills my interest in the site it might be a good thing. I have one iPod full of music that scrobbles, one that doesn't. Guess which one I listen to more.

I suppose if this does kill last.fm maybe people will be more invested in making libre.fm an alternative, so it may end up being a good thing. I had a look at libre.fm but it's very basic, just scrobbles your songs with no extra features, and since the events are the thing I mostly use last.fm for, not having events at all is a deal-breaker.

Good god. last.fm's "similar artists" feature was pretty much the deepest and most useful/accurate of its kind on the net. But with the new redesign, only 10 similar artists are displayed. Bah!

^yeah, this is my biggest complaint. I haven't scrobbled in years, but up until recently I still used last.fm for recommendations.

I've been scrobbling since 2001, and this new site is a real bummer for me. Its just so ugly and unnecessary, and they just dumped a whole bunch of customization features in order to make a website that is as pleasant as Windows 8. The site has made itself pretty unusable for what I liked to do with it, so I might just delete what is currently my oldest account on the internet.

Frobisher, Monday, 24 August 2015 01:46 (eight years ago) link

I don't think I understand libre.fm. Does it just keep track of these weird no-label songs in its own library? It's reminding me of the OG mp3.com with these tracks.

Frobisher, Monday, 24 August 2015 01:57 (eight years ago) link

i'm taking a wait and see attitude for now. usually when something updates and ppl moan i usually roll my eyes so i was kinda impressed that no, this change really is as disastrously bad as it's been made out to be. they've destroyed like 90% of the functionality of the site, on nearly every front - social media, music suggestion, personal data mining, etc. even w/ the cosmetic changes i have to think there was a better way to do that (actually i know there was as i've seen it in various apps etc ppl have made to personalize last.fm over the years). i scrobbled a) because to an extent i like have the data recorded and accessible (i can't justify this) and b) it made suggestions more accurate and useful. the social aspect came into play here in that i could see whoelse scrobbled this act and then see if they scrobbled a similar act and to what extent. a competitor would be nice, esp if i could export that data, but it would only really work if a) my "friends" were also on there and b) it was easily compatible w/ spotify, itunes, etc.

i don't know how many other ppl cared about this aspect of last.fm, overwhelmingly most ppl i knew used it as a streaming service once upon a time and haven't been on there in many years. it would be interesting and perhaps not that hard to do (obv they know what you play and when) for spotify to add this feature, though ppl might freak out on 'privacy' grounds.

balls, Monday, 24 August 2015 02:04 (eight years ago) link

I am a weirdo who likes meticulous lists of my music habits broken up into several different variables... and the recommendations.

Frobisher, Monday, 24 August 2015 02:09 (eight years ago) link

So, lemme get this straight, from what I've been reading about this:

1. You no longer have "friends" on the site, more "people you are following" and "people who are following you" - why this needed to be changed, I don't know.

2. There is no way of seeing who your "neighbours" are, or the accounts of the people your music taste closely matches... therefore, how are you meant to find people to "follow"? Random browsing?

3. There is no "compatibility bar", therefore no way of quickly seeing how closely a persons music taste matches yours without browsing deep into their library, in which case you have to use the numerous drop-down menus to actually see for yourself, whereas before you could conveniently see most of this information on a persons front page.

4. No display of a persons age, gender or location on their actual profile, they've limited the "About Me" section to a smaller amount of characters and there's a lack of customisation to a persons profile. There's also (at present) no "groups". You still have your shoutbox and private messages, but basically it seems that they've hollowed out most of the "social" element, rendering it almost useless on that front.

5. The "recommendations" function has been pared back considerably, where once you were able to go quite deep into the recommendations portion of the site, now it only displays 10 results at any given time. Apparently, you can't "dismiss" anything or "add" anything to your library at the moment. You have the ability to view recommendations by Artists, Albums or Track, but from what I've read, people are getting track recommendations for tracks they've already listened to and album recommendations for Greatest Hits/Best Of's or artists which already have hundreds of listens on their profile. What's the point? It basically seems like they've taken a perfectly great feature and again, rendered it almost useless.

6. From the sounds of it, the seem to have focused more on the re-design of the site rather than solving a more frustrating problem, which is getting people's tracks to fucking scrobble properly without having "lost" scrobbles etc.

On the other hand, here's what you can do...

1. Better, deeper way of actually browsing through what you've listened to over the years, which I suppose is great, but at the cost of all the features they've stripped out of the site?

2. On the main page you can see what artists and songs are "trending", which is great if you choose to listen to or seek out music that way but many, many people don't - for those that didn't care about how many people were listening to Lana Del Rey, Arctic Monkeys, Coldplay or The Beatles on a daily basis, they tended to use the site by seeking out like-minded people with similar tastes or using the recommendations function. Oh, wait...

So basically, if you want to keep up with what's popular and you don't mind being a "statistic", then last.fm seems to be a good option. For finding people with similar tastes to chew the fat with or to find deep recommendations on that site, I think the game is up... as for scrobbling/stats, well, they're pretty useless just on their own. Personally, I don't need to see an on-screen layout of everything that I've listened to the most to know what my favourite albums or artists are. Remove the social/recommendations aspect to it and there is legitimately no fucking point of scrobbling - might as well use a search engine, or your "play count" function on your media player, and stop worrying about whether the scrobbler is working properly or not.

I guess audioscrobbler/last.fm was a pretty novel thing or a good experiment at first, but I think its definitely ran its course and is worthless in its current form.

another good feature apparently taken away: "friends who listen to this artist"

Good god. last.fm's "similar artists" feature was pretty much the deepest and most useful/accurate of its kind on the net. But with the new redesign, only 10 similar artists are displayed. Bah!

― brimstead, Wednesday, August 19, 2015 5:44 PM (2 months ago)

I also noticed that shoutboxes now only include the 10 most recent shouts (whereas you used to be able to browse through hundreds of shouts dating back nearly a decade)

Kanye West (#20)
Rihanna (#30)

Beyonce is just below the cut, tied with the Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish.

I knew the userbase was rock-centric (top 2 artists tagged as funk: RHCP & Jamiroquai) but remind me again why we bother patting ourselves on the back over the crossover breakouts of late Armstrong/Berry/Charles et al? Is taste less segregated now than the days of Louis Jordan and Jimmie Lunceford?

I still use Last.fm and associated add-ons to get it to work on different sites, but the site is a skeleton of what it used to be. They have these superpowered algorithms that are not being used at all effectively. What is the sense in cataloguing listens when there isn't even a way to search artists or tracks within them? 'I guess I've listened to [X] about 50 times, so I'll skip to roughly the eighth page' is not a successful search facility. And as for cross-referencing anything with a friend...

I hope they get bought out by some wealthy fan who can restore the site to its former glory.

The Scrobbler has been installed and running on my computer since whenever I first started using it (seven, eight years ago?), but I couldn't tell you when the last time I actually visited the site was. Well over a year ago. Probably a lot longer.

PaulTMA, Thursday, 8 June 2017 16:46 (six years ago) link

Same for me Austin. Ten, twelve years ago last.fm was one of the coolest musical places on the internet. Loads of interaction, new finds etc. The beginning of their downfall was CBS buying the site in 2007 imo. I had a paid account until that time, but after the takeover, in 2009, they started charging for radio too. That was the straw that broke the camel's back.

Haven't been on the site for ages until clicking your profile today :) (very high compatibility between us iirc) I have the scrobbler and spotify also set to record what I play, but I never look at the site tbh.

three weeks pass...

As someone in his thirties, I find scrobbling a lonely endeavour these days. All the real-life acquaintances I had friended on Last.fm 10–15 years ago no longer scrobble due to changes in how they listen to music, or they got married and started families which dampened their time and interest in seeking out new music. I feel like the last living member of a tribe.

Looking around to see if strangers out there share my tastes is no longer rewarding: apparently challenged by the sheer bulk of music available to anyone nowadays, which means two people’s listening is even less likely to overlap than before, Last.fm has changed its compatibility algorithm. The way Last.fm tries to drive up website engagement by being too optimistic feels slimy and dishonest: now I’m seeing “Your compatibility with X is Super” even when we just share a small handful of common artists, and they aren’t even close to my most-listened artists.

Melomane, Wednesday, 25 March 2020 21:17 (four years ago) link

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 26 March 2020 09:34 (four years ago) link

I think the re-design was meant to make the site more phone/tablet-friendly, as this had been introduced as a factor in Google page rankings, and they needed to maintain the site hits to retain the ad clicks.

fyi I was having some wifi issues on OS X, most obvious symptom was poor videoconference quality. turns out the AudioScrobbler thing I had in the menubar was causing them.

in case anyone is still using AudioScrobbler and having network issues on OS X. it was very obvious for me:

1. open terminal, type: ping 8.8.8.8
2. ping times reliably went up every thirty seconds or so
3. close AS
4. ping times were fine

lukas, Monday, 22 June 2020 01:12 (three years ago) link

I’m not using AS but last.fm in general has been wonky the past couple of days, there’s been a few hours where it would just suddenly stop scrobbling or my charts would disappear. The missing scrobbles do come back later on though

There seem to be two different Spotify widgets now (or there have been for a while) - Spotify Scrobbling and Spotify Playback (the old one). Lost two days of scrobbling as a result (I'm devastated can you not tell) - no communication about this from last.fm that I noticed, had to go to Settings and the Applications tab to enable it.

Given that the world is burning I thought I'd idly check my last.fm stats. Looking at the weekly stuff they produce, I average around 400 scrobbles a week, which equates to about a days listening. Given I can't listen to music at work anymore, a fair amount of listening in a week, I figured.

Well, I'm following someone who regularly posts 6000 scrobbles a week, so more than ten times my amount and, well, what? Are they just shuffling 24 hours a day for the shits and giggles? A bot? Are there prizes for most scrobbles?

Answers on a postcard to the usual address plz.

Just checked and I averaged 200 a day last year and I listen all day in work and several hours out of work so almost 600 seems ridiculous.

You'd have to be scrobbling 24/7 with an average track length of just over 2 minutes (unless they're double or triple scrobbling in error)

I still scrobble for my own amusement, but the social nature of the site largely died years ago, once concert listings were removed and the disastrous redesign happened. A decade ago, the site was so popular that, at least in my country, a lot of one’s hipster friends were scrobbling there. Plus, it was easy to make new real-life friends by seeing who else in your town was listening to X and arranging to meet up. That doesn’t really happen anymore.

I have gone through long periods of not using it / it not working for one reason or another, so my page is kind of odd.

my original account sat dormant for a long time & I switched from it to a new one in 2017 but sometimes I end up logged into the wrong one, there's a lot of Sonos-related "this didn't scrobble" stuff but the stats since 21 May 2017 say:

47.,443 scrobbles
6,921 artists
9,953 albums scrobbled

Yikes. Coming up on 20 years in 5 months! I’m amazed it’s still around — and even more amazed it seems to be gaining traction with Gen Z (observation based on tiny sample, granted)

I hadn't looked at Last.fm in years, but had to check to see if I had still been scrobbling all this time in the background. No, apparently I stopped. Active 2006-2016; 85,057 scrobbles from 16,362.

Since December, 2005 (across MediaMonkey, iTunes, iPod, lala, rdio and now Spotify)

223,599 scrobbles
18,104 artists
37,701 albums

My first two tracks were Philip Glass and John Cage and both remain my most played artists (5077 and 3961 scrobbles respectively) followed by Domenico Scarlatti, John Fahey and the Black Angels. Better Luck Next Time by Royal Baths is my third most scrobbled album and probably my favorite.
