More importantly, which major artists do you think listen to lots of smaller acts?

Does Metallica keep up on up and coming metal bands?

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Monday, 7 June 2004 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Prince, by definition, is far too cool and talented to ever even slightly think about the Make-Up.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 June 2004 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Does Robert Plant like Kingdom Come?

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Monday, 7 June 2004 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember a while back that Lars from Metallica listened to Sigur Ros and said that it was making an impact on the band's forthcoming album. Maybe this was before Hetfield went into rehab?

anonermous, Monday, 7 June 2004 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember a while back that Lars from Metallica listened to Sigur Ros and said that it was making an impact on the band's forthcoming album.

Ah, so that's why it sucked.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 June 2004 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Prince likes The Time.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 7 June 2004 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Duke Arabia has been bragging that Timbaland listens to Black Dice in his SUV, but I don't believe it.

sexyDancer, Monday, 7 June 2004 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw DJ Shadow and Stereolab CDs at Laurie Anderson's house, like 7 years ago.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 7 June 2004 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

2002 brought the world "Beaches & Canyons" , the first full-length release from Black Dice, which forever changed the public perception of what this band could be. 2003 saw the release of the landmark single "Cone Toaster", where the band explored their unique version of 4/4 dance music - it was rated 2003 Single of the Year in the New York Times (Jon Pareles), amongst others and saw the band getting reviewed and covered by every genre of music magazine. When the DFA met Timbaland while in Miami at the 2004 Winter Music Conference, he referred to "Cone Toaster" as some "freaky shit" and told us it was in his CD player in his car. We are not making this up.

Funny.. i never remember hearing popcorn snares in Sigur Ros's music.

I can't wait for the My Bloody Valentine/Sonic Youth/Smiths influenced Limp Bizkit album... or the upcoming MC5 influenced Justin Timberlake album on that note.

>Does Robert Plant like Kingdom Come? <

When I interviewed him maybe 15 years ago, actually, he kept saying he likes the Cocteau Twins, the Swans, and Husker Du. He hated Whitesnake. But I kept wondering whether he was just dropping names that he thought would impress a music critic.

Timbaland is supposedly a huge fan of *O Brother Where Art Thou?*

chuck, Monday, 7 June 2004 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

he kept saying he likes the Cocteau Twins, the Swans, and Husker Du. He hated Whitesnake.

it seems to be a lot of musicians hate that which reminds them of themselves in even a slight way.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Monday, 7 June 2004 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Sonic Youth used to talk about liking Hair Police.

Atnevon (Atnevon), Monday, 7 June 2004 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

But I kept wondering whether he was just dropping names that he thought would impress a music critic.

I can't say I've interviewed him but my impression in all the other various stories I've read with him over time has always been that it's honest love. Besides which, Led Zeppelin (and the first part of the solo career at least) was testimony to the fact that the bandmembers listened to just about EVERYTHING, so why not?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 June 2004 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Robert Plant likes Slint and Sunny Murray, too.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 7 June 2004 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Sonic Youth sideprohects have played with Hair Police. You got to hand it to Sonic Youth for remaining somewhat on top of new music. Now, Steven Malkmus or someone like, I'd imagine sits at home listening to the same crap he did 10 years ago.

Well, I can actually imagine the Cocteau Twins, the Swans, and Husker Du reminding him of Led Zeppelin, though...

Prince likes Alicia Keys and OutKast and lots of old funk and Fleetwood Mac.

Actually, judging from the last two shows I was at in Portland, Malkmus enjoys seeing the Sun City Girls and Mission of Burma live.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 7 June 2004 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The problem with Bowie's constant namedrops is that he always makes them like he's the only person on the planet who's ever heard of these bands, and he's always about a year and a half too late to pull it off. Mark my words, in early 2005: "I've been listening to this band Lightning Bolt. Crazy stuff, I think we'll all be hearing a lot more about them during the coming year."

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 7 June 2004 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 7 June 2004 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

The image of Robert Plant chilling out in his mansion with Swans "Children of God" on the hi-fi is a truly awesome thing.
There's footage of Page & Plant backstage at a New Order concert(!)

sexyDancer, Monday, 7 June 2004 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

since i've been forced to ponder the image of Robert Palmer in a vocal booth being recorded by Steve Albini it's been easy to believe anything else I've heard about him.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 7 June 2004 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Palmer?

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Someone told me the last time Page & Plant came through Chicago, Plant showed up at the Hothouse, this smallish venue that programs a lot of underground jazz. I can't remember what the show was; I remember it being something I wanted to attend but I blew off for some reason. I want to say it was maybe Henry Threadgill or someone like that. Stence, do you remember this? Is that where your Murray reference comes from? Anyway, he's always had pretty good, wide-ranging taste. When I saw him on the Now & Zen tour he was using the Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares record as intro music.

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

he was there for the Sunny Murray show, dude. I actually missed it myself, like a chump, but the Wildman STILL raves about it.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

a-ha, so that was what I was thinking of. Yeah, Murray. I missed it too, like a dumbass.

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Palmer?

WOOOOPS! Though wouldn't THAT have been a trip?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

esp. if Albini was setting up room mics for Palmer's all-model band.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Like Albini and his army of red suits should talk!

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

(never minding the minor detail that Albini didn't invite himself into this comparison point, and is purely an innocent target in this discussion)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

actually the sonic violence (breaking glass, guitar skinng) on "Simply Irresistable" displays a bit of Big Black influence.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

wasn't there a similar sound on "Tall Cool One?"

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

good call!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I think we're through the looking glass here, people...

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

There was a sound of glass breaking on the B-52's "Party out of Bounds"

*doodly doodly doodly*

Fred Schneider records with Albini in 1995.

I think we discovered something.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard "Tall Cool One" in the organic grocery store in Greenpoint with the surly Polish chicks. It was invigoratingly puzzling.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

there is the sound of glass-breaking on Pere Ubu's "Sentimental Journey", and David Thomas and Prince are both Jehovah's Witnesses, and Prince likes Led Zep, so there ya go.

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

naw see just glass breaking won't do it, it's gotta be glass breaking with the guitar znnng bullet-passing-by thing. Otherwise it's just Neubauten.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't there that bit in Yes' "Owner of a Lonely Heart"?
Producer Trevor Horn was in Art of Noise with Anne Dudley who collaborated on an lp with Jaz Coleman who is in Killing Joke who were a big influence on Steve Albini.

sexyDancer, Monday, 7 June 2004 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Dunno, but about ten years ago the British press made a point of interviewing him and getting him to list all the bands he liked at the time, of which there were dozens. This was in the time of Oasis, when it was the uncoolest thing for bands to admit to liking other bands of the moment

fiction or fact: did prince's business people ask/warn smog never to play "prince alone in the studio"? seems like i remember that rumor... but...

seems like joan jett had a serious liking for lungfish... she even asked them to play a couple shows...

I saw Ric Ocasek and Paulina Porizkova and Neil Young at a Delta '72/Cakelike show at the Cooler around '95. I think that I heard Ric was thinking about producing cakelike. Neil didn't seem too stoked on what he was seeing. Also, David Byrne sat in front of me at a Momus show at the Fez around '99. Make of this what you will.

ianinportland, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Multi Xpost re. the sound of glass smashing: Roland Kirk did it on "Rip, Rig & Panic", to commemorate a vase he broke during childhood saxophone practice. Apparently it fell off a shelf after he played a particularly loud harmonic.
