Destroy: Angelic Converstaion, Astral Distaser (kewl name, crap album), The Queens of the Circulating Library. Gold is the Metal.

Search: Most everything else, but I happen to like early/mid 90's coil best: Love's Secret Domain, Stolen & Contaminated Songs, Black Light Distict, Worship the Glitch, Unnatural History 3.

Classic, obviously.

back after a while.... well in coil's recent production there's more than a gem and my preferences would go to music to play in the dark vol1and2 and worship the glitch . their best older albums are horse rotorvator and love's secret domain.... but this is just a start cuz the whole of their production has something interesting in it....

francesco, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

We must have done this sometime but... The two big starting points for older Coil would have to be the albums Love's Secret Domain and Horse Rotarvator. Destroy: Gold is the Metal. Time Machines, like most of their newer stuff, is a bit too abstract for my tastes.

hm, could Glorian Jones have ever conceived that her little northern soul ditty would become such a goth staple..

Wyndham Earl, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The Nurse with Wound thread is here. Much of these older threads are sitting in the Uncategorized section, after they fall off the New Questions list. There's constant talk about getting the uncategorized section into order, so this may be fixed up in the next decade.

Sean Carruthers, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Oh, and search: Horse Rotorvator. I won't destroy anything because I'm not familiar enough with it.

Sean Carruthers, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

most of their recent stuff successfully blends their more goth-friendly, slightly cheesy elements with modern electronic sounds; specifically search "music to play in the dark" 2 and then 1. "astral disaster" is, if you ask me, some kind of weird tribute to germany in the 1970s. and kate bush. also, "how to destroy angels" (worth it just for the NWW remix of the title), scatology, constant shallowness (mostly noise, but "green child" is great/weird songiness), black light district (excellent side project), and even the snaky, inky blackness of time machines are worth checking out.

overrated: love's secret domain, the hellraiser themes (both of which i sold for $50+ each back in the day, wahoo capitalism) and queens of the circulating library.

Scatology and The Horse Rotorvator are both great albums (and recently rereleased at that), while the Windowpane and the Snow EP is good testimony to how they both listened to where dance music was going and ended up influencing a fair amount of it (via Warp/Autechre connections), but I'm not as strong as more recent work, unfortunately. These days I seem to be into Current 93 the most.

I should listen to some of Coil's recorded stuff. I saw them live at Mind Your Head Festival 2002 in London (I was there to see Sigur Ros of course) and they sucked REALLY bad. It was the wankiest shit I'd ever fallen asleep to, but people tell me they're far better on record than live. Meh.

i have been playing music to play in the dark volume 2, and i like it. its quite goth of course, but "where are you" is quite deathly...it reminds me of an evil momus

"where are you? no one has seen you in years" is a great line, and should be used more often...people who fall off the radar have been a romantic staple of pop for years of course, but this captures it well

It was a fun moment when dour industrialists like Psychic TV and Coil suddenly caught disco fever and started tooling up for hermetic house tracks. On records like Love's Secret Domain you can hear the pale molemen emerging from the darkness of their secret laboratory and squinting into the light of a mirror ball.

Search: the twisted sound collages, the idiosyncratic approach to house, the chilly ambience.

Destroy: the crypto-sexual conspiracy theorizing, the gothic growling, the big gated eighties drum sounds.

EC, Sunday, 16 March 2003 18:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

...meanwhile, Jourgensen & Co. donned their novelty cowboy hats and started building bridges between industrial sauce pan clank-sampling and various forms of mutant rawk: post-hardcore, pigfuck, grindcore, etc.

Coil's disco steps and Ministry's distorted barre chords weaned a lot of listeners from industrial dance's cold and wizened teet. All the A students started sneaking out of the Wax Trax School of Spooky Chain Rattling.
Some fled to a more cheerful dance floor, while others turned to Am Rep and/or Earache for more guitar-based ugliness.

That being said, there are still plenty of clubs which function as industrio-gothic Greenfield Villages, and I'm sure they're very meaningful to their black-clad regulars.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 16:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

...oh yes, and hip hop! Hip hop is the other reason that gore flick sound biting is no longer a viable way to fill a dance floor. The Bomb Squad inspired fans of atonal sound collage to move from the taffy pull to the cabbage patch.

Al was bending the brim of his cowboy hat, and Coil were putting on their boogie shoes, so second-string tin pounders like Meat Beat Manifesto and MC 900 Foot Jesus were left with the thankless task of recording hip hop records for white guys in black clothes.

EC, Wednesday, 19 March 2003 04:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

...only it's not so simple. "Industrial dance" was a dark reflection of concurrent forms of dance music since its inception. If you owned "Sensoria," "Every Day is Halloween," and a crushed refrigerator box, you could have been doing some eerie, sex magickal breakdancing throughout the first half of the eighties.

You could have finished your routine by doing the robot with Kraftwerk. Those androids were burning up every dancefloor, cardboard or otherwise. It's no good trying to explain musical genres to dancing robots. They'll just stare blankly at you as they continue to shake their mechanical booties.

"Dang, now I'll have to catch up. Of the recent material, I have some of those seasonal EPs, I likes 'em.
-- Ned Raggett (ne...), March 16th, 2003."

Yeah, the four EPs were collected as 'Moon's Milk', which I recommend if you've got time to focus on them, as they move pretty slowly. I like to listen to them while I go to sleep, although there are extremely nutty and frightening tracks at the end and start of the two CDs, so if you're not asleep by them it's pretty fucked.

Other than that I only have 'ove's Secret Domain' which is awesome. I'm always loking for more Coil.

Has anyone heard that track they made featuring a guy's phone message whose boyfriend was a huge Coil fan and topped himself by jumping off a cliff? What's it called?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 23 April 2005 05:11 (nineteen years ago) link

Re-posted from another thread.

So, like, I've been entirely steeping myself in COIL these days, trying to catch up. I picked up the re-mastered Horse Rotorvator (though I had the Some Bizarre edition -- which the band has since renounced). I also picked up the Unnatural History II disc in order to finally hear the aborted tracks from Hellraiser (I really wanted them to be scarier, truthfully, but there's a lot of other great stuff on the disc). The stuff I was really looking for but couldn't seem to find, however, was Love's Secret Domain and Musick to Play in the Dark Vol.1. I'd looked all around the likely shops in NYC, but came up empty, and their official site (Threshold House) has closed the shop for now. Failing everything else, I went to eBay, and won a used copy of L's.S.D (at no great savings to me), figuring I'd never find it anywhere else. It hasn't arrived yet.

So, today, on a lark, I pop into Tower Records on Broadway looking for nothing in particular. Once upon a time (in the days of vinyl), if you were looking for a record and Tower didn't have it, there was a good chance that said record simply didn't exist. But, that was then. In the ensuing years, Tower has fallen into a decline that recalls the fall of the Roman Empire. They're a lost cause teetering on the edge of bankruptcy. But sure enough -- push me down the anal staircase! Their in the import section are more COIL releases than I've ever spotted in any locale...including Musick to Play in the Dark Vol.1 (which I instantly snapped up) and....rotorvate my damn horse...Love's Secret Domain...WRAPPED, PRISTINE AND FACTORY SEALED...unlike the used version I'm waiting to arrive in the mail, which -- for all I know -- may have been used as a coaster. I suck.

REVIVE AGAIN!

I'm well into Musick to Play in the Dark 1, though I'm not wild about "The Dreamer is Still Asleep". Love's Secret Domain isn't what I expected at all, but I'm quite enjoying it. I love the title track and the two "Teenage Lightning" tracks. Been downloading some of their other stuff (and oof is there a lot of it). I agree with whomever said it above that much of it is just far too abstract (notably the stuff fom the COIL-ANS box), but none of it is dull, at the very least.

Secondly, the General Store at the Threshold House site is back open...czech it out! http://www.thresholdhouse.com/

Amon (eman), Saturday, 14 May 2005 05:57 (eighteen years ago) link

"Teenage Lightning" happens to be one of the few tracks I've been able to d/l so far but I've only got a brief fragment of it for some reason. I played it tonight and it sure is weird. To my mind it's more interesting than that Red Birds track. (yes I know that's not the whole title but I refuse to play along with the zillion-word title game. I only have so much mental energy to devote to these things!)

When I was a teenager and heard their version of Tainted Love it cracked me up completely. I thought it was the funniest thing. But my friend was able to take it seriously and said that the video led him to believe they were tying it into AIDS. I guess I was supposed to feel guilty at that point but even if I heard it today I think it would still have me chuckling. The sheer difference between the Soft Cell hoppy boppy pop song vs. the Coil slow trudge through molasses is something I still find funny.

Franky, I'll disagree with Callum on their live work. I really like that period of their act. "Ostia" doesn't hold a candle to the original, but "Warning from the Sun", "I Don't Want to Be the One", and "Are You Shivering?" are classics.

However, that particular show most certainly does not reflect on their entire catalogue. The 2003 ATP show, 2004 in Paris, and 2001 in Moscow are all enthralling and totally different (but all have marimba, interestingly).

(non-TG that is)

Alex in NYC, Monday, 18 May 2009 23:26 (fourteen years ago) link

yes. the album is pretty great in parts. i saw him do it live a few weeks ago. it was so so and was accompanied by some very controversial film footage.

"being articulate, self-effacing, polite and so on - with some fantastic tunes under his belt - should not mean he can foist explicit footage married to lame notions of mystical altruism upon everyone without getting a pasting. it is irrelevant whether or not he made the footage himself or obtained it. even if i believe those "men" were "over 18", the context in which something passed off as a "charitable act" was presented - ie audiovisual lounge exotica vs An Evening with Les Dawson - was enough to make my stomach churn."

"i don't want to equate him with Gary Glitter by any stretch... and i'm not making any allegations over "legality"... and i love some of his productions dearly... but the context was disturbing me, along with the "knowing" sniggers from the audience. i maintain that if these "over 18"s were female, from any country in the world, Thailand or otherwise, there could well have been a national outrage following even minor exposure from a review in a shitty local rag like the List."

the hushed reverence and complicity of the audience present was the most interesting thing about the evening. the number of people taking photos of the screen was very strange, even those with SLRs who appeared to be press.

this was all a little too "comfortable" given the nature of the content, and the context under which it was presented. such is the man's influence and musical legacy that none dare challenge him aloud over the frankly ridiculous and misguided expressions of "hope" expressed during the first video. his demeanour was equally too disarming and magnanimous for any serious attempt to challenge him.

now i like some TG and Coil tracks enormously. sicker and more objectionable people have made better music, too. Sleazy is not shy about his "interests", for which i would commend him. i am also completely confident he has the intelligence to realise what is and what isn't acceptable in terms of legality and performance, especially in this country. he is clearly a consummate professional in many fields.

the overriding feeling i was left with, as noted above, was that i cannot for the life of me believe that anyone, anywhere, in any country would have easily accepted the same footage and sentiments transposed to a situation where a man of his age - or indeed a woman - would receive such an "easy ride" screening imagery of very young members of the opposite sex in public, under the banner of "art", dressed up in a partially "charitable" terms.

this all reminds me of William Bennett's recent talk at the CCA where he seemed to take an easy option by equally praising "non-Western" notions of "not having to answer questions once they are posed", rather being interested in "standing in the space that positing the question would create".

http://www.flickr.com/photos/biotron/3263652364/

the value of being shocking for the sake of being shocking is quite tired but occasionally valid, imho. it takes on a fairly different tone when some sort of loudhailer apology is superimposed upon proceedings.

can we search late period coil? i'm thinking post Love's Secret Domain. this is their best shit imo. of what i've heard search:

Black Light District - A Thousand Lights In A Darkened Room: deep electronic music, "red skeletons" is a lurching sickly dub beast and a total career highlight; balance's voice appearing on "green water" after 40 minutes or so of weirdness is revelatory

Time Machines: completely stunning old skool analog ambience; one of the best drone albums ever made imo

...And The Ambulance Died In His Arms: a live recording from the group's final performance. this was my introduction to coil, john balance's affable inter-song banter seemed totally incongruous to the darkness of the music. love the narrative in "A Slip In The Marylebone Road"

Musick To Play In The Dark 1 & 2: some of the greatest music ever created by man, need i say more

anyway, out of a fairly dense catalogue what else should i be paying attention to?

CaptainLorax, Monday, 14 September 2009 02:49 (fourteen years ago) link

this is their best shit imo.

they were incredibly prolific in their late period but i don't think they were necessarily better. 'musick to play in the dark 1' is an absolute masterpiece although i think volume 2 is quite weak. of the later recordings, apart from those you mention, the solstice singles, compiled on cd as 'moons milk in four seasons' and the 'ape of naples' and the 'new backwards' (recorded way back but only latterly made available) are highly recommended. 'going up' from the 'ape of naples' reduces me to a quivering mess every time.

the 'foxtrot' benefit comp. contains, imo, one of the finest and most prophetic coil tracks and is key and essential.

for me, 'horse rotorvator' remains their finest moment. i think 'ostia' is one of the top 5 greatest recordings of all time. i have recently spent a lot of time re-listening to 'nightmare culture', their collaboration with boyd rice and am blown away all over again by it.

on reflection, everything they ever recorded is worth at least a cursory investigation and i continue to discover new riches. for me, the greatest 'band' that ever existed. my beatles.

yeah that's a good mix. interesting that you find Musick To Play In The Dark 2 to be weak compared to the first one, as for me there's not much in it. either one could be my favourite of the two depending on which one is currently playing.

there may be a bit more filler on 2 but i figured they were from the same recording sessions which might explain a slight discrepancy in quality. but "tiny golden books" is a monster, and "batwings" is my favourite john balance performance. and "ether"! one of the best Coil songs full stop. amazing record.

interesting that you find Musick To Play In The Dark 2 to be weak compared to the first one, as for me there's not much in it.

perhaps i was a tad harsh. i was DEFINITELY a tad drunk when i posted that. musick...1 just blew me away so much that 2 couldn't really live up to it to my ears. by anyone else's standards it is a mighty fine album but i just never really bonded with it. i completely agree that "tiny golden books" and "batwings" are fabulous though.

I love the Optimo Sleepwalk album.

And Time Machines is probably my most played Coil record, works really well at a range of different volumes. I've sometimes found that if it's on quietly in the background it seems to distort my perception even more than loud or on headphones. I'd appreciate if anyone knowledgeable could point me in the direction of anything similar that they've done.

OCD Scrobbles (I am using your worlds), Monday, 14 September 2009 18:00 (fourteen years ago) link

There's been talk of a 2 CD version of Time Machines forever, but nothing's been confirmed yet. Nothing comparable in their discography, though.

Unless you're happy with the also-simple-tones-but-not-similar-at-all concept stuff on ANS - http://www.brainwashed.com/common/htdocs/discog/coilans.php?site=coil08

CoilANS is nice. I also remember liking Constant Shallowness Leads To Evil, but haven't heard it in a while.
My favorite Coil works remain Musick To Play In The Dark, both volumes, followed by Ape Of Naples, esp. for the final track.

Dan S, Monday, 14 September 2009 18:25 (fourteen years ago) link

I bought ANS thinking it would be similar and although I like it, it doesn't do it for me the way Time Machines does. It's probably due a re-listen though.

S: Scatology, Horse Rotorvator, Gold is the Metal, Unnatural History I-II-III, Love's Secret Domain, Stolen & Contaminated Songs, The Angelic Conversation, Born Again Pagans, Worship The Glitch, A Thousand Lights in a Darkened Room, Time Machines, Moon's Milk in Four Phases (+ bonus disc), Foxtrot (compilation, various artists), Astral Disaster (vinyl & CD versions), Musick to Play in the Dark I-II, The Remote Viewer (2 disc edition), Live 1-2-3-4, Selvaggina Go Back into the Woods, ANS box set, Black Antlers (original & remastered editions), And the Ambulance Died in his Arms, The Ape of Naples, Backwards (tape version), The New Backwards, Plastic Spider Thing, Songs of the Week, various tracks & remixes (Bill Laswell (Kala), Depeche Mode - Rush (unreleased Coil remix), Nine Inch Nails remixes on the two (different) Further Down The Spiral CDs and Broken/Fixed, etc - just about anything you can find = classic)

D because I'm not into the harsher screaming & noise: Transparent, Queens of the Circulating Library, Constant Shallowness Leads to Evil

http://thresholdhouse.greedbag.com/release/~colour-sound-oblivion-coils-offi/

Colour Sound Oblivion will consist of at least 12 dvds of all the Incarnations of Coil Live, with simultaneous Projection channels, plus at least 2 discs of alternate versions Projections with "karaoke" backing tracks and audio loops, which you can use to remake Coil Live in your own image. A minimum of 14 dvds, possibly more - the final total depends on the last bits of compiling being done by the end of the year.

Guess who is one of the 200 crazy Coil fans who preordered this :-)

yeah the two albums match up really closely in song-style. on reflection and having heard both albums straight through tonight, 1 is clearly superior, but for the first 3 tracks of Vol 2 you can be forgiven for thinking it might be quite close

Vol 1 has 4 absolutely incredible, all-time-great tracks on it and is seared into my mind. the other two songs are merely 'superb'. one of the best albums of the last 20 years

StanM, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 16:04 (ten years ago) link

I am surprised by this announcement as, to my knowledge, there have been a lot of disputes between surviving members of the inner Coil family about which label to work with and how best to carry the legacy forward into the present

the tune was space, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 16:09 (ten years ago) link

Hence the lack of news since the initial announcement?

gotta lol geir (NickB), Tuesday, 22 October 2013 16:16 (ten years ago) link

yeah, I'm wondering if the announcement is itself an attempt to assert some pre-emptive market claim / dominance thing

there have been some kinda suspicious cashgrab bootlegs emanating from other quarters, much to everybody's chagrin (not brainwashed, I hasten to add- jon wouldn't do that) and the whole trouble with it being posthumous is that it's hard to interpret what geff and sleazy would have wanted

I won't say more but this whole thing is painful

the tune was space, Tuesday, 22 October 2013 16:18 (ten years ago) link

xpost

Well, yes, Brainwashed has the correspondence to prove that Sleazy wanted them to reissue material, but the executor of the will is someone else, officially. No idea if they're talking to each other or if there's an understanding/deal (e.g. reissuing previously released material by Brainwashed, issuing previously unreleased material by Thresholdhouse?)

Coil / Nine Inch Nails | Recoiled

“Recoiled” is a rambunctious alchemy, of magikal Coil sensibilities and hi-tech home circa 90’s mixing technique, all fused in the cave-like early studios of Danny Hyde / Peter Christopherson. These were the unrestrained PRE- BIG studio- mix downs, of four songs which long time Coil admirer / collaborator Trent Reznor requested Coil to remix. Reznor sent over the original multi-tracks and DATs to Hyde / Christopherson, who independently mixed versions and then met to synch both creations, molding them into these master versions. ”Recoiled” includes a fuller, more opulent version of the track ‘Closer’, which eventually made it onto the opening credits to the movie “SE7EN”. These 5 lengthy compositions are pre-Ableton / laptop generation type priest song creations, with the use of baby alarms and numerous wires to create bespoke effects. These legendary tracks were always rumoured to exist and, only the due diligence of a dedicated NIN forum who hunted them down, are released/unleashed for your listening pleasure. 4 of the tracks were released on the download-only “Uncoiled”. A bonus, previously unheard track from the same sessions closes the album. Jhonn Balance is also manifest on this gilded constellation. Beautifully remastered for CD / vinyl. CD in digipak.

The recent issue of Backwards seems to have passed here without comment. Unlike these new releases it seems to have been an unauthorized release by former auxiliary Coil member Danny Hyde.

I feel like I'm a pretty big Coil fan but I am unfamiliar with most of these singles that are getting reissued with bonus stuff. Which ones are worth getting?

Wimmels, Thursday, 15 October 2015 01:38 (eight years ago) link

well I'd say "all of then", but imo the essentials are:

Panic
Hellraiser
Wrong Eye/Scope

and maybe The Snow

sleeve, Thursday, 15 October 2015 02:55 (eight years ago) link

then them

sleeve, Thursday, 15 October 2015 02:55 (eight years ago) link

the anal staircase > hellraiser > the wheel > panic > the snow > wrong eye. but, even wrong eye rules.

i wonder what the masses of extra material on these releases is? something about it all doesn''t quite seem right.

stirmonster, Thursday, 15 October 2015 03:35 (eight years ago) link

Yeah, it seems strange - demos and such. Of course I know The Anal Staircase (which I love) and Panic (which I've never been fond of), but I agree something seems dubious about all this extra stuff.

My favorite era is the later / Black Antlers / Ape of Naples stuff, but I pretty much love most eras of Coil unreservedly.

So....who's gonna take one for the team and buy a few of these and report back?

MaresNest, Thursday, 15 October 2015 16:39 (eight years ago) link

hey look finally some information:

http://www.factmag.com/2015/10/14/coils-reissues-through-threshold-archives/

Update, October 14: Former Coil associate Jon Whitney has confirmed that he is organising the releases.

The Archive also stresses upfront the impossibility of an “authorized” Coil release due to the deaths of both members (John Balance died in 2004, marking the end of the project), concluding that “without Balance and Sleaz, there is no official Coil release nor will there ever be again. Nothing that bears the word ‘Coil’ is authorized, official, or sanctioned by Coil as Coil has ceased to exist.” Despite that, the detail and dedication of these releases is worth the attention of any fan.

not sure what I think abt that

sleeve, Thursday, 15 October 2015 17:02 (eight years ago) link

If Jon's involved I'm good with it -- he'd been doing all this work to try and get things organized. Maybe the subtext here is simply that there is no final way to dot i's and cross t's. I'm really wondering now if there simply wasn't any legal provision for the estates.

Panic (which I've never been fond of),

panic is all about its wondrous b-side

and, scatology is definitely classic.

stirmonster, Thursday, 15 October 2015 20:38 (eight years ago) link

Picked up the Backwards reissue at the local shop (where I was frankly surprised to see it). So nice to have a proper release of the New Orleans versions of "A Cold Cell" and "Fire Of the Mind," and the second half of this thing (the half that sounds the most like The New Backwards) is pretty great. But I've always preferred strange / mysterious / beautiful Coil to angry / dark / evil Coil, and some of these are a little too abrasive for me; it may indeed be the bridge between LSD and MTPinD, and I can definitely hear that, but the more NIN-sounding stuff on here (which I realize is like saying "Oasis-sounding Beatles stuff") is decidedly not my favorite Coil material. Interested to hear other opinions.

Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Monday, 19 October 2015 14:19 (eight years ago) link

i totally agree. the abrasive tracks on backwards are probably my least favourite things they ever did. indeed, their hook up with trent reznor didn't seem to bring out the best in them as i never really loved their NIN remixes either.

Weird uncanny beautiful coil is the coil I like. Faves are Musick... Dark, the Equinox/Solstice EPs, and the very last albums. I know there's stuff in that vein I'm missing (some of which I doubtless already downloaded from the archive dot org dump and haven't got to yet!)

Just got all 8 CDs and the Cold Spring version of Backwards in the mail from Forced Exposure yesterday. A little disappointed with the extremely minimal packaging—they're just in sleeves, with no notes or even a tracklisting to speak of—but obviously the music is great. Love the "Pre-Original Chaostrophy," gorgeous.

spastic heritage, Thursday, 22 October 2015 22:19 (eight years ago) link

obviously the music is the most important thing but it feels a little at odds with the whole coil ethos for these to be so spartan.

stirmonster, Thursday, 22 October 2015 22:36 (eight years ago) link

That is disappointing. All of them are like that? I guess they're pretty inexpensive, though I am sure you are like me in that you'd have gladly paid a few bucks extra for a nice booklet, maybe with some liner notes and period pics. The "no tracklisting" thing seems especially weird to me.

Shame to hear a few negative comments on the presentation and packaging, bearing in mind this quote from the archive page:

Thighpaulsandra has stated to me in an email from September 2015:
"If your releases are not perceived as ultimately desirable objects they will just be regarded on a par with all the bootlegs. I think the packaging and presentation needs to be of a standard that G&S would have approved of. I tried to ensure the books met their standards. I hope your CDs will do the same."
I hope so too...

these albums deserve a more long term commitment from a label that can keep them in print and available for years to come, this whole limited edition-sold out-jacked up secondary market cycle is shitty and exploitive and cynical. No diss to any individual consuemrs, it's great that people still love and listen to this music, but this short-term thinking, I dunno, I think this is a real disservice to Geff and Sleazy's legacy.

as for that ebay person: "pay your respects to the vultures", indeed

the tune was space, Wednesday, 28 October 2015 15:01 (eight years ago) link

it's pathetic. as someone who runs a label, it really isn't rocket science to do this properly and with respect and love to coil's legacy and high standards.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 28 October 2015 15:21 (eight years ago) link

Cosign on all of this. It's absurd that we are living in a time of labels like LITA, Numero, Dust To Digital and Soul Jazz (not to mention a time in which every idea Stephen fucking Stills ever had is available as a super deluxe 180 gram vinyl box set) and yet we can't get a decent Coil reissue campaign going. It boggles the mind that beautiful, deluxe retrospective LPs of everything from Native American private press music to the fucking Unwound discography can be had with a mouseclick, but Love's Secret Domain remains a "rare" release.

Wimmels, Wednesday, 28 October 2015 15:56 (eight years ago) link

Wimmels, Wednesday, 28 October 2015 15:58 (eight years ago) link

unfortunately Jon Whitney has not made any new public statements as of yet, so everything is pure speculation and mystery at this point

lots of talk on the public FB Coil page as well...

sleeve, Wednesday, 28 October 2015 16:00 (eight years ago) link

Not about the withdrawal, but about the situation in general: my understanding is that there was a lot of bickering and infighting between rival parties and that there was a large enough group of them (surviving band members, ex-boyfriends, and superfans who saw themselves as archivists) that no clear majority with moral authority / followthrough emerged, and so the result is bitterness and mutual hostility and shady bootlegs and short term thinking. I saw some offers that were made to a consortium of those involved that could have solved this in a responsible way, and I heard about offers from reissue labels that wanted to do a one time, high priced box thing, and I think it all just collapsed because no one could agree about who had the right to do what, what figure was the right figure, what option was best. So this is where their legacy stands right now.

I have also seen some shocking posts from Chris and Cosey on Twitter alleging that Thighpaulsandra is selling off bits of Geff and Sleazy's archive on eBay (including priceless things such as the first letter Geff wrote to Sleazy as a teen) and if that is true it is really despicable- that should be archived properly by a library / museum. That is queer history. That is occult history. That is not some trinket with which to make a quick buck. Shame.

I heard about offers from reissue labels that wanted to do a one time, high priced box thing

whatever happens next, i sincerely hope it's not this. there are lots of people out there hungry for coil vinyl, many of them too young to have ever purchased coil records before and it would be great to see their music available to those who don't have the funds to buy an elitist box set.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 28 October 2015 18:43 (eight years ago) link

I agree, a more long term commitment to keeping individual albums in print will let people of all kinds discover the catalog, and it will let people who are more likely to want album x or y find out about them

a bourgeois collector object is likely to be bought by the very people who probably already own the albums on other formats anyway (such as myself- I have the albums on vinyl and on CD already), so it doesn't get the band any new fans and it might squelch efforts to bring the albums to the wider, newer audience they deserve

update: http://brainwashed.com/bark/projects-coil.html

Thank you to everyone who has supported the launch of Threshold Archives. It is something to be proud of. It has made a lot of people very happy to have the beginnings of the project Peter began finally come to light after so many years. The first phase accomplished its goals: to establish it as a viable entity, to be affordable, available, to preserve the legacy, and work as a model to compensate contributors and survivors when bootleg practices and exploiters run rampant worldwide.

In order to continue, however, it is necessary to step away and let someone else take responsibility. The new custodian of Threshold Archives has the infrastructure to meet the requirements, manage accounting and royalties, and establish a trust dedicated to reaching agreements with various stakeholders fairly and ethically.

Brainwashed will only serve in a wholly unpaid advisory capacity from here on. The project is temporarily on hold while the details are being worked out. All apologies to those who have missed the first run but please be patient and try to resist temptation to pay scalpers and opportunists on the auction sites and trading sites.

Thank you again.

as I see it he's saying that he doesn't want to deal with the repress and keeping them in print, so somebody else is gonna do it, like a real label. this is for the best imo.

agree that it probably could have been handled better and w/more communication (specifically, it would be nice to know if the Amazon pre-orders for Nov. 13th are still valid). But I can't imagine it'll take very long for these new releases to show up in some new form. I'd bet money it'll happen before the repress of England's Hidden Reverse ;)

right but have the three tracks you cited been *replaced* by HTDA, or were they simply retitled/reindexed versions of HTDA originally? i.e., have the CD's contents changed other than taking the recitation out?

(I am still waiting on my copy of this, I got it after the other seven)

sleeve, Wednesday, 4 November 2015 19:09 (eight years ago) link

I just compared them visually in some sound editing program and I stand corrected. They were originally made up from the same samples as HTDA and this one new long track does indeed look more like the first three tracks from the original TAC record with some bits in between. The track length (16:37, just like HTDA) and the sonic similarities were confusing. Apologies.

It's a shame I don't share the author's pugilistic abilities and enjoy the same high regard among the readers of The WIRE as well but you can't have it all. What I can say, judging by the electronic edition I've read, is it's going to be a fine tome - I won't say anything else as I think they're still sweating over what's going in that final proof that goes to print - but the reprint is long overdue, I'm sure you'll agree.

however, the perennial pedant in me has to point out that lady diana and prince charles got married in 1981 not 1984. i know this, not because i'm a royalist but as in my head their wedding is always associated with the release of flux of pink indian's "neu smell" ep which was released in the summer of '81.

I am using your worlds, Sunday, 10 September 2017 10:20 (six years ago) link

but not that 4 minute vinyl thing

but, it's a lovely looking record. :-)

i'm fully aware it is a ridiculously short amount of music but i had had so many people ask me to do it that i succumbed. there is also the bonus that it looks like it will raise enough money to pay for sponsporing 20 vulnerable thai children for a year.

stirmonster, Sunday, 10 September 2017 14:01 (six years ago) link

ok ok, it does look lovely and I did think about it :-)

Got the Time Machines remaster CD today, can't say I can hear that much or even any difference after a quick listen/compare (tried to look at the waveforms and the first track is about the same, second and third are a little bit quieter, third is a little louder and 10 seconds longer -> silence at the end) - but at the moment, I can't tell what they did. Maybe it's my ears, don't know

StanM, Monday, 11 September 2017 14:55 (six years ago) link

Mention of "vulnerable Thai children" made me think of this uncomfortable subject, which doesn't seem to have been aired much. I'm well aware that it opens a can of worms, but I think it should be at least acknowledged.

Last year Andrew McKenzie of the Hafler Trio wrote a blog post in which he made vague allegations of an unsavoury sort against Balance and Christopherson:

https://simply-superior.blogspot.com/2016/11/youre-dead-but-so-what.html

McKenzie seems like a serious and credible witness to me, but who knows?

heaven parker (anagram), Monday, 11 September 2017 15:25 (six years ago) link

it should be acknowledged, though i don't think anyone knows anything for sure and i certainly don't trust the word of mr. mackenzie who i once had the misfortune to book for a performance and who i found to be a deeply unpleasant, extremely narcissistic, untrustworthy individual.

but, even though it is just speculation, it is one of the reasons why i thought an organisation that helps thai children should be the recipient of all monies this record generates.

stirmonster, Monday, 11 September 2017 19:24 (six years ago) link

Stirmonster otm. I would never call Mackenzie "serious and credible" a witness. A short glance on his blog will show you this is not the case. Touch and Staalplaat need to be destroyed, he specifically asks people to take those labels down because of some personal vendetta, and his demeanor is querulant a lot of the time. He does not have substantial evidence to back up his claim.

I don't feel any need to defend Sleazy or Jhon, at all, but Mackenzie is scraping the barrel here, shrouded in "trust me, I knew these guys once" type indictments.

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 11 September 2017 21:04 (six years ago) link

starting out your blog post with screenshots of 4chan is not the way to look very credible, imo

mh, Monday, 11 September 2017 21:07 (six years ago) link

eh i've heard this same stuff for years and years. i believe it.

Shart Dressed Man (kurt schwitterz), Monday, 11 September 2017 21:37 (six years ago) link

I've heard it too, but it never went any further than "it's been said for years and years" which is kind of the problem. Hafler as well: it's all "trust me, I know" instead of actually saying what he knows or saw or whatever.

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 11 September 2017 21:43 (six years ago) link

he said he knew Sleazy would go to Thailand to have sex with young children.

Shart Dressed Man (kurt schwitterz), Monday, 11 September 2017 22:25 (six years ago) link

how is that not "actually saying what he knows" ?

Shart Dressed Man (kurt schwitterz), Monday, 11 September 2017 22:26 (six years ago) link

I think there's a noncommittal vagueness to repeatedly implying something and saying "I have been vocal about _this_" while alluding to Saville, etc. and posting 4chan screenshots, and not explicitly saying what you mean

there's an implication but not an accusation, and it all reads very much like gossip

mh, Monday, 11 September 2017 23:29 (six years ago) link

actually "saying what he knows" would be "I know he went to Thailand and later moved there to have sex with..." and then an actual accusation

I mean if you just put Saville on there he could mean virtually anything

Being able to buy Coil CDs in HMV in a non descript Northern town (Warrington) is an odd thing but I picked up a copy of Worship the Glitch in there last Sunday. It feels right. I want them to seep into other people's lives and their waking lives the way they have mine. Feels right to be able to walk to my flat just minutes walk from the Mersey river, past the weird sports bar where the owner first played me early Tangerine Dream to listen to it. Feels like the sort of thing that'd make Geff and Sleazy happy.

Man there really is a new flood on, here's another live 'authorized bootleg' via Soleilmoon:

https://www.soleilmoon.com/shop/coil-porto/

“Porto” is the only authorized bootleg live recording of a Coil live performance.
Coil performed on 21 June 2003 at the Casa da Música Festival in Porto, Portugal. Present on stage that night were Peter Christopherson, Ossian Brown and Thighpaulsandra. Jhonn Balance was not part of the lineup, possibly due to his drug and alcohol addictions. Because of his absence the music on this recording is entirely instrumental. The show was also notable for being Ossian’s last appearance with Coil.
This edition is manufactured and released in Portugal, and is distributed in North America by Soleilmoon. Royalties will be paid to the remaining artists involved in the concert.
Tracklist
1. Blue Rats (18:14)
2. Triple Sun (12:56)
3. Radio Westin (13:32)
4. Drip Drop (10:04)
5. The First Five Minutes After Death (11:24)

I mean, they say as much on the Soleilmoon listing:

These are NOT QUALITY CONTROLLED Coil products. They should not be regarded as such. Coil was Geff Rushton (John Balance) and Peter Christopherson (Sleazy). Without the two of them, there is no Coil and thus no official Coil product. Threshold Archives was begun by Peter Christopherson to empty the archives of unreleased material and make music easily affordable for fans. Do not spend large amounts for these items. While Peter collaborated on the tracklists, the artwork was never finalized, and Coil was much more than simply the music contained in the product. In Peter’s words, he expressed his desire for a “case solid enough to stand up on its own” for the set so there may or may not be a construction kit forthcoming. Peter’s share of the proceeds will once again be donated to the SET Foundation and as before, payments will be issued to other contributors and survivors.

given that the discs are six bucks each, this seems reasonable, particularly when taken in the context of the "Product Description" as a whole.

cool, two days after "...And The Ambulance Died In His Arms"

in other news, Swanyard has some high points but a LOT of track duplication. Disappointing overall, and probably should have been a single CD, but hey why not release everything even if it's multiple versions (some tracks are repeated three times).

Finally getting around to hearing Stolen & Contaminated Songs and it's great (and much better than the tumbleweeds blowing through this thread would suggest). The "Love's Secret Domain" demo uses the same vocal take (at least I am 95% sure it does), and there are few vocals elsewhere (though the answering machine message on "Who'll Fall" is chilling - does anyone know whose voice that is?). I've never been 100% clear about the division of labor in Coil, though I assume it's similar to a lot of sorta He's-the-DJ-I'm-The-Rapper type duos (ie Pet Shop Boys), and that Sleazy handles the lion's share of the production work. I'm sure there are people who know how it breaks down and who does what, but this is actually the first time I've thought about it.

One other observation after one listen: I think people forget how funny Coil can be. For example, see "Wrim Wram Wrom," whose tantalizingly inscrutable title appears to be inspired not by some esoteric Gnostic evocation but by the phonetic rendering of the synth sounds used on the track! That's my take, anyway.

Paul Ponzi, Thursday, 23 January 2020 22:01 (four years ago) link

Yes, it is wonderful. The answering machine message on "Who'll Fall" was from a good friend of theirs but I don't think they ever revealed exactly who it was.

Sleazy was responsible for the vast majority of the production work; in the earlier days i think probably 100%. Around the LSD era Balance was perhaps a bit more involved with the production work. And yes, Coil had so much humour, something that I feel passes some of their more po faced fans by completely.

Also looks like Hyde has ANOTHER thing up:

https://infinitefog.bandcamp.com/album/sara-dales-sensual-massage

IFP presents a long-awaited complete version of “Sara Dale's Sensual Massage” OST with 8 exclusive and unheard tracks.
Sara Dale's Sensual Massage was a delightful erotic video with a mystic soundtrack by Coil. Quite unusual for the band dreamy ambient, almost spa-relaxed soft harmonies, bland tribal rhythms, chimes, and birdsong but still with dark mysterious and inimitable Coil musick's charm.
However, the second part of the album explores more rhythmic structures that remind 'Gay Man's Guide...' soundtrack.

Besides the OST recordings, the edition includes bonus tracks from the "Basilisk prod.'s" era: “Theme From Blue”, and grandiose "The Hills Are Alive" so badly wanted on vinyl.

Per the notes on the Discogs page:

Complete version of Coil's OST for the erotic video “Sara Dale's Sensual Massage” including 8 previously unreleased tracks and bonus tracks from the Themes For Derek Jarman's Blue era.
This material was previously partially released on Coil - The Sound Of Musick.

akm, Thursday, 31 December 2020 20:50 (three years ago) link

arguably none of the reissues are authorised. i think the infinite fog one is one step away from being a bootleg.

stirmonster, Thursday, 31 December 2020 20:55 (three years ago) link

It's a little um, unclear what "commissioned artwork by Steven Stapleton" means. I mean.. it was originally wasn't it?

Germs! Germs! Germs! (Noel Emits), Thursday, 31 December 2020 20:57 (three years ago) link

This is all probably upthread somewhere, but did neither of them have any relatives or anything? Surely the assets of an estate would revert to the next of kin under the rules of intestacy, or failing that the Treasury (which would mean the Crown could legally reissue Coil LPs, lol).

meanwhile back at the song (Matt #2), Thursday, 31 December 2020 21:20 (three years ago) link

Yes, there are relatives but it is ultra complicated and it seems nobody is able to agree on anything so it all sits perennially in limbo.

consensus feeling that wax trax reissue will be better than the infinite fog one? didn't see any mastering details and infinite fog's bandcamp page is almost impossible to read with dark text on a dark background.

Position Position, Friday, 19 February 2021 04:17 (three years ago) link

David Keenan writes novels now. 'This Is Memorial Device' might be of interest to readers of this thread. It's about a post-punk band in Scotland in the 80s and the various characters they hang about with. If I remember right it doesn't have all that much of a plot but I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing.

paolo, Friday, 19 February 2021 08:49 (three years ago) link

Is England's Hidden Reverse worth getting by the way? It's out of print so I've seen it going for like £25+ online but it's my birthday soon so I might ask for it then.

I don't have any special knowledge, tbh, I'm only saying this since Coil bootlegs are rampant (I mean, I have mediocre LPs of LSD, Scatology and Horse Rotorvator and I KNOW those aren't legit) and out of kneejerk reaction to a label based in Russia- there's a lot of stupid Russophobia out there, sure, but it's also a territory where IP law is notoriously lax.

I mean, I'm browsing Sounds of the Universe now and they stock Infinite Fog releases? Who knows...

Reposting this from a Coil thread on another forum, regarding the waxtrax version. Response from someone involved in the LSD repress/remaster.

Ours (Wax Trax!) is remastered by Josh Bonati and is already up on streaming so you can hear just how fucking awesome it sounds. As for legit, we’re working with Stephen Thrower & Ossian Brown and Balance’s family, with input and insight by Annie Anxiety, Rose McDowall, Marc Almond, Charles Hayward, Steve Stapleton & Billy McGee and have received encouragement & materials from Thighps, Drew & others along the way. And we’re paying royalties to the artists or their families.

We are not using the same plant that Cocksure was pressed at

Don't know the bonafides of the infinite fog version but this version seems to be as legit as they can.

Buried at the bottom of the Wax Trax newsletter I almost deleted:

This is an update for all our Coil pre-orders. We have run into an issue with the upcoming release of Coil’s, Love’s Secret Domain. Like many other labels over this past year, we are getting word of some unforeseen delays in the record pressing supply chain. There has also been a quality issue in production that we weren’t happy with and as result the release will be pushed back approximately four weeks into July. The record pressing supply chain was out of our hands, but the quality issue is something we feel strongly about and ultimately we will have a superior product to pass along to you all.

Wonder if the CD will also be delayed

Paul Ponzi, Tuesday, 1 June 2021 16:54 (two years ago) link

I'd imagine CD will be on time. I've run into the vinyl issue constantly in the past few months. All last year I had quality problems with various plants. And I was recently given an estimated 40 week turn around from a plant for a record.

Oblique Strategies, Tuesday, 1 June 2021 18:09 (two years ago) link

Paul Ponzi, Thursday, 3 June 2021 23:47 (two years ago) link

StanM, Friday, 4 June 2021 04:29 (two years ago) link

the cd artwork looks like it was made at kinkos

adam, Friday, 4 June 2021 12:46 (two years ago) link

OK, So the artwork is definitely dark on the vinyl too. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and say that it may be closer to Stapleton's original art but the band must have increased the saturation for a reason to bring out the vivid red that I always associate with this record.
The mastering and pressing are "fine". They exist in that uncanny valley where there's nothing fundamentally wrong about them but they lack life and spark. Your mileage may vary with that assessment depending on how much of an audiophile you are. I'm not able to pinpoint specifically what I DON'T like other than that it's the first time I've listened to Loves Secret Domain and it's felt like a bit of a chore.
The additional tracks are interesting but not really essential. If you loved Swanyard then you'll probably enjoy them. Only the guitar only version of Teenage Lightning feels like something that could sit on Stolen and Contaminated Songs.
The wooden box was nice and given how much people are trying to flip them for it's probably a better investment than most cryptocurrency...

Oblique Strategies, Friday, 4 June 2021 18:05 (two years ago) link

it's probably a better investment than most cryptocurrency...

For sure. Coil prices are consistently crazy and they seem to have a lot of very well off fans. I sold a few Coil records early in the pandemic when I was in a big panic about having no income and my copies of Musick To Play In The Dark 1 & 2 raised enough to cover my mortgage for a few months.

― stirmonster, Thursday, 3 June 2021 20:16 (two days ago) bookmarkflaglink

Off topic, but I'm sure we've all noticed that the price of vinyl has been going up in recent years. If vinyl becomes less popular with mainstream consumers (I know that sounds super snobby but there you go) then will it become less expensive for underground artists to put records out? My understanding is that the main reason that the price of vinyl has gone up and pressing is taking longer is because of major labels clogging up the pressing plants.

paolo, Saturday, 5 June 2021 09:57 (two years ago) link

My understanding is that the main reason that the price of vinyl has gone up and pressing is taking longer is because of major labels clogging up the pressing plants.

i fear it is going to be a very long time before the majors jump off what they perceive to be a vinyl gravy train. i also have a feeling purchasers of major label vinyl have a more price elastic relationship with it, so are more likely to be prepared to pay very high prices. i hope i am proved wrong.

stirmonster, Saturday, 5 June 2021 10:33 (two years ago) link

My take - The smaller indies who are pressing under 2000 copies of records are about to stop pressing vinyl.
Let's say they release 5 records per year with an average of 1000 copies pressed. That means they're out $50,000 (plus anything they advanced artists for recording) for up to 18 months before seeing a return from distributors.
I don't see how that's tenable for most labels. It's peanuts to a major label though. They'll churn out Ghostbusters soundtracks for Record Store Day as long as people are willing to buy them.

Regarding pricing. I honestly think it was kept somewhat artificially low for a long time but the Discogs flippers have proven that people will pay. Especially for re-issues or limited editions. Example - I recently missed the announcement for a new press of a record for '92. The pre-order from the label ($19.99) sold out so any stores who had copies started selling it for $70. The label did another pressing to stop the gouging but yeah. People are paying that money pretty regularly it seems.

Oblique Strategies, Saturday, 5 June 2021 20:10 (two years ago) link

yup the Diseno Corbusier reissues on Vinyilssimo immediately went oop and now are up to $70 each for new copies

sleeve, Saturday, 5 June 2021 21:40 (two years ago) link

but i think the number of people prepared to pay $70 is very low. looking at Diseño Corbusier's El Alma De La Estrella repress as an example, it has sold 10 times on discogs in 2 years.

£36.83 Average
£37.23 Median
£43.39 Highest
£25.98 Lowest

i agree people will pay HIGH prices for limited editions and reissues but it is depressing with regard to new releases. it can't end well.

Tracking on mine has said "Shipping Label Created, USPS Awaiting Item, Chicago, IL" since Thursday. You'd think after an eight month delay Wax Trax would, I dunno, ship the thing the same day they printed the label.

Paul Ponzi, Tuesday, 14 September 2021 12:05 (two years ago) link

i wish this would get a uk release. shipping is just too much to justify buying it.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 14 September 2021 14:45 (two years ago) link

To be honest - That's as likely to be USPS not scanning the label as it is to be the label not dropping it at the post office. I sent a record 15 blocks recently that wasn't entered into the system until 2 weeks later when it was scanned in Seattle (for context, I like in Brooklyn).

Oblique Strategies, Tuesday, 14 September 2021 20:15 (two years ago) link

That's good to know, thanks, and yeah, that's happened to me once or twice. I receive the USPS delivery digest and it's never really accurate.

h/t to StanM for uncovering/discovering these (crossposted from the Ambient Recommendations thread)

https://coh-official.bandcamp.com/

8 Soisong broadcasts have been released already this year - by Ivan Pavlov (COH), not clear how many of this was made when Peter Christopherson was still alive but they're interesting and quite magical at times. Some fleeting beats, 60s chansons or Asian pop songs may also drift in and out, but I'd classify this as ambient, overall.

they are extremely cool and mysterious, a great listen

Listened to the WaxTrax LSD reissue again last night, what a great sounding pressing. I can't imagine that the original LP didn't include Things Happen. A highlight of the album for me.

The booklet with interviews and some great context/production info is really well done.

Such a shame it didn't get a UK/EU release but I'm 100% happy I went with this release. Maybe Waxtrax could add the booklet .pdf to the Bandcamp digital release.

Coil's one of my all time favorite bands but it's weird, now that I have multiple copies of LSD and both volumes of MTPITD, in addition to all the must-have releases I already owned (Horse Rotorvator, Ape of Naples, Black Antlers, And The Ambulance, etc) I kinda think I'm finally done collecting Coil stuff? I mean, given that both Geff and Sleazy are dead and all. Unless there is some crazy revelatory archival thing left to be discovered (doubtful), I think I'm finally OK with what I have.

I got me the reissue of MTPITD2 the other week. I'd heard it a few times before and thought it was one of their weaker albums but it's a lot better than I remember. Batwings is one of their finest achievements. Possibly top three Coil tracks material

paolo, Friday, 20 May 2022 20:05 (one year ago) link

Just listened to a bit of MTPITD2, my first Coil for quite a few years. Then I went back to Broccoli and was reminded of what I always used to think: do people really take acid/mushrooms and listen to Coil? Some of that stuff seems designed to cause a bad trip (I'm fully prepared to be 'missing the point' on this but thought I'd ask).

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Friday, 20 May 2022 20:38 (one year ago) link

i feel MTPITD2 has matured with age and I like it way more now than i did when it came out.

i used to trip to Coil quite a lot, but stopped tripping a little while after "Love's Secret Domain" came out. The one that was way too much to listen to tripping was their Sickness Of Snakes side project but I really did love tripping while listening to those other early albums.

Which color variation did you get? I ended up getting the "transparent crystal blue" or whatever they were calling it, and was pleasantly surprised by how good it sounded, given the dreaded colored vinyl

I used to think I preferred volume 1 but these days I'm leaning toward this second volume being the better of the two, though that could be because I was previously a lot more familiar with Volume 1 for many years ("Batwings" aside)

I've done it a bit. It can be overwhelming if you're not in a positive state of mind to begin with, but listening to LSD on its namesake substance is like entering a portal to another realm.

MTPITD2 might be my favorite Coil these days; I could live inside "Tiny Golden Books," dosed or not.

So, the first time I hung out with one of my best friends, we got pretty loaded and he was playing music on his mini disc player. It was a copy of a Coil album and he didn't know the name of it. It was one of the most extreme things I have heard, although I'm not sure how much my state of mind played into that. But it sort of sounded like the speakers were tearing themselves apart. I've only heard a little Coil since then and nothing sounded like that at all. I don't remember much of a rhythm to the music, it sounded really shredded and brutal. Honestly, I don't know if I would recognize it again if I heard it but I've been curious as to what it could have been for a while. There's also the chance that it was mislabeled. I've asked him about it since then and the minidisk is long gone. Any idea what it could be?

I was just randomly checking jumping around the wikipedia entries for coil and came across this:

While the Black Antlers and The Remote Viewer re-releases were made available as announced, Christopherson was never to issue Moon's Milk (In Six Phases) in his lifetime. His passing makes it uncertain whether the package will ever eventuate as at this stage there have been no further Coil releases. Danny Hyde, who worked with Christopherson on the proposed reissue, eventually released the additional material that had been intended for the third disc of the set. Issued as Moon's Milk in Final Phase, the three tracks were credited to Electric Sewer Age rather than Coil.[4]

And then looked up "Electric Sewer Age" on Tidal and there are three albums on there (and presumably on all streaming services). So there's some additional Coil stuff out there I was not aware of and I might as well share the info here. I'm enjoying "Moon's Milk in Final Phase" right now.

I already have all of this in two formats, but I'm glad it's being reissued

there were a slew of "special editions" but of course those are long since sold out

Anywhere a non-subscribing pleb can pre-order the upcoming JB box? (I also don't use Facebook but I sub to the VOD newsletter)

Paul Ponzi, Wednesday, 27 December 2023 13:20 (four months ago) link

Pre-orders are not being taken anywhere at the moment. As noted above you can try your luck when it goes on sale direct at the VOD website but don't hang about. I wouldn't be surprised if a few copies go up for general sale, I've bought a few boxes from VOD before but have no interest in this one so the chances are you'll get one.

Listening to them for the first time (Music to play in the Dark 2). A touch underwhelming but will try a couple of other ones.

I have a slight preference for MTPITD1 over the second one but they had so many styles you're sure to find something you like. Most people would probably point to Horse Rotorvator as their best album.

Cheers, will try that one

personally i'd say that ape of naples is their most accessible (though that's a relative term ofc). depends what kind of stuff you're normally into really

first coil album i ever listened to was the new backwards i think, i remember being underwhelmed and didn't bother with them for another year or so

stirmonster, Friday, 15 March 2024 14:41 (one month ago) link

any early reactions to this reissue? Mine arrived but I have not been in the right headspace to listen, an excuse that may be more acceptable when discussing Coil than perhaps any other band!

Paul Ponzi, Tuesday, 19 March 2024 19:56 (one month ago) link

i have not checked the reissue yet to see how the quality is either. will maybe have some amethyst deceivers time later this week.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 19 March 2024 23:22 (one month ago) link

Digital hi res files are good, a little louder than before, but not painfully brickwalled. I had a version with 3 tracks in part 5, so there’s a track I haven’t heard before (Bankside), and it’s fantastic. (But I think it was included on the previous reissue as well.)

Also, a live version of Amethyst Deceivers is still tacked on to A Warning from the Sun as a hidden track (including minutes silence), so the first thing I did with the digital download is to split them and move Deceivers to the very end.

Bottom line: worth getting for Bankside, but not a sonic improvement (nor did it need to be).

Xgau Murder Spa (nikola), Tuesday, 19 March 2024 23:26 (one month ago) link

yep Bankside was added to the Threshold Archives CD of the Moon's Milk bonus disc, glad they added it here too

Today I attended the second funeral I've been to where Coil's "Going Up" was played. It was played in its entirety while everyone sat in quiet contemplation. It was one of the most emotional few minutes of my entire life and the most intense (but beautiful) funeral experence I've ever known. Almost indescribable!
