My first girlfriend and I met by listening to SWV on a walkman with two headphone jacks on a bus trip to NYC.

"Anything" video, I danced harder to that video than any other. I felt as if I had their full support.

I've wondered (often) if the video/radio mix of "Weak" is the most beautiful thing I've heard (in that trashy, 4-inch fingernails way).

Richj (Rich), Saturday, 14 January 2006 03:41 (twenty years ago)

Can we also talk here about how trancendentally awesome "Don't Walk Away" by Jade is?

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Saturday, 14 January 2006 04:00 (twenty years ago)

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Saturday, 14 January 2006 08:37 (twenty years ago)

"Weak," "Right Here / Human Nature," "I'm So Into You," "Someone," "Anything (Remix)," "You're the One" = SWV's greatest hits collection is at least half 9.5+

I should have mentioned that I've never, not for a second, forgotten how incredible SWV were. And are.

four years pass...

Ok I love Electrik Red as the next man, but I'm surprised that SWV have not gotten that much love on this website. They were the perfect synthesis between En Vogue and TLC. I just listened to their song "Release Some Tension" featuring Foxy Brown and Coko sounds hot as hell with the upright bass playing beside her.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUjZYY8FWMo

Also have to point out "Use Your Heart" with Coko's and Taj's lush soulful voice against a pre-weird Neptune beat.

26 Mixes Focaccia (Stevie D), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 23:04 (sixteen years ago)

don't know who either of them is but calling weak 'trashy' is weird, i think the shanice-ey innocence makes it, and the chorus vocals are super gospel, we agree it is v. v. beautiful

rankin ass (tremendoid), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 23:34 (sixteen years ago)

I think the poster was referring to Coko's nails which were very long.

SHORTS? seriously? fuck off. (ojo), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 23:48 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah the remix is classic, but I saw the original on VH1 soul and I think it's better:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNeI_kgPnF0

Maybe because I've heard the Human Nature one toooo many times. But the remix did sort of predict the mash up thing would hit big in the 00s.

lilsoulbrother, Tuesday, 9 February 2010 23:57 (sixteen years ago)

the bam jam extended jeep mix of 'weak' is one of the greatest records ever made.

the uk back to black mix of 'right here' is a surprisingly hardy alternative to the overplayed original, especially if you like upright bass and the toto bit replucked on guitar.

agree that 'use your heart' is wonderful. "real loooove - purified".

I think the poster was referring to Coko's nails which were very long.

yeah i know but he said the video and the track, not a big deal i just always thought of them as being on the chaste(r) end of that era of r&b

six months pass...

I was listening to their last album, "Release Some Tension" and remembered that they performed on the Monique Show this year:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Axd7AKv8gEs

I also remember reading an article on Vibe about 90s singers, and that Kanye yelled to the audience that Coko was one of the best singers of all time and that we (i.e. the youngings who love Beyonce) weren't appreciating her.

lilsoulbrother, Thursday, 19 August 2010 05:07 (fifteen years ago)

Oh ok. I stand corrected, Kanye West was telling that to Coko's son that she was an icon.

one year passes...

their new album is really getting under my skin. it's a consciously retro affair, i'm constantly picking up sonic and lyrical '90s references, but it doesn't feel like a nostalgia fest - reminds me of the kandi album in the way it covers emotional issues from a grown-woman perspective, that same bittersweet undercurrent that comes from having the assumption that you finally had it figured out overthrown

me too! eagerly waiting for it to appear on Spotify...

breastcrawl, Saturday, 28 April 2012 12:18 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah the new album is really good. It's really smart about the way its contemporarizes '90s sounds, and finds a smart mix between modern and retro w/o feeling desperate or obvious. And the songs have real weight to them.

Evan R, Saturday, 28 April 2012 14:10 (fourteen years ago)

i need to listen to this. so far i only heard the title track

So what is SWV's best album? Is there a consensus choice?

This thread is based on a false premise. No one has ever forgotten.
