Buzzcocks: Classic or Dud

Easy one, this. Absolute pristine classic. The best British pop group since punk. "What Do I Get" almost earns them that accolade by itself.

They've been a pretty terrible influence, mind. Can't think of their imitators who moved me at all, The Smiths possibly excepted. Anyone remember early Soup Dragons? Wurgh.

Venga, Thursday, 29 March 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Yeah i agree. They may only have one song, but they play it bloody well!

NickGreenfield, Thursday, 29 March 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I dig all the buzzcocks. Ever Fallen In Love is a great song, too. I they influenced a lot of good bands. Didn't they influence a bunch of punk/poppunk bands before it turned into Offspring/Rancid type stuff? I'm talking about Descendents and stuff like that.

, Thursday, 29 March 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Hmmm. What I meant was that all the pants-wetting, prissy, stunted indie pop of the last 20 years can probably be traced back to the 'Cocks. Thousands of bands completely missing the point. A bit like Hendrix and a whole generation of fret-abusing, long-haired, self-abusers.

Venga, Thursday, 29 March 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Classic. Too easy. We just did Dr. Dre and the Clash; who's next up in There's No Way They're a Dud But I'll Ask Anyway? Let's do Elvis Costello and the Pixies later.

Larms, Thursday, 29 March 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Yeah, The Buzzcocks are way too uncontroversial for a Classic-or-Dud. The Clash thread was actually fairly polarized, lotsa people disliking them, more than for my man Springsteen who I thought was gonna get a thorough beating at the hands of Smiths fans (kind of an amusing image when you think about it), who turned out to be outnumbered by rock and roll lovers ;). Anyway, Buzzcocks = Classic.

Patrick, Thursday, 29 March 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Classic! Irrefutably great.

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 29 March 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

If everyone for the past 20 (25?) years has missed the point then it begs the question as to what the point is?

"Boredom" is one of the greatest songs ever recorded. I'm happy to stop there, personally.

Tom, Thursday, 29 March 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Random personal Buzzcocks thoughts : 'I Don't Mind' on TOTP, '16 Again' on the OGWT, the gig with Joy Division at Leeds, Diggle's lead vocal on 'Harmony in my Head', the 'Orgasm Addict' picture sleeve, 'Get on Our Own', 'You Say You Don't Love Me', 'Just Lust', 'Running Free'.......

Virtually everything they did was great. They moved me then, and they move me today. And of course they released the single greatest record in the history of rock n' roll - The Spiral Scratch E.P. But then you knew that already, didn't you?

Dr. C, Friday, 30 March 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I think "you'll never be sixteen again" is one of the most potent lines in pop, and I though that when I was sixteen and even before I was that age.

Jonesy and I had the privilege to be present at the Buzzkunst show last year (Devoto and Shelley together again after all these years) which was so good we didn't bother hanging around for Goldfrapp.

I love the Buzzcocks and, although they aren't in the very top rank of my very favourite bands, I still think of them as pretty much the definition of a great pop band.

Tim, Friday, 30 March 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

am i missing something here? the buzzcocks are pretty mediocre, and 'ever falling in love' is one of the most irritating songs ever made.

one year passes...
I put this on at my birthday party for a while the other day, and I think I had forgotten just how amazing these guys were. Their highest highs are just untouchable by any other similar-minded band - fascinating, unpredictable melodies that seem like they'll keep going and shifting forever, but somehow managing to be catchy the whole damn time. Are they considered punk or post-punk? Some of their stuff seems to toe the (admittedly nonexistent and blurry) line, and some seems to be pretty clearly either one or the other. (I only own the best-of comp called Operators Manual.)

Clarke B., Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Way the fuck classic (at least going by their '70s stuff -- I haven't bothered listening to their '90s output). Throw in Magazine and you got yourselves The Pinnacle Of Awesome.

Nate Patrin, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

They have about two great moments, but the good news is that my mind keeps changing about what they are.

Kris, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

One of my absolute favourites - who had a better starting run of singles? About eight or nine genuine classics in a row, I think. As it happens, I came across a CD I Don't Mind The Buzzcocks, a compilation at £1.99 yesterday which I couldn't resist even though I had all the great stuff already, and was just playing it (Ever Fallen In Love on as I type).

I saw them four times, I think it was, way back when: the White Riot tour with the Clash, Subway Sect and Slits; another with Penetration; another where I can't remember the support, and when Joy Division supported them - pretty memorable, that.

Martin Skidmore, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Absolute total, capital "C", Classic

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 9 August 2004 13:45 (nineteen years ago) link

So classic it hurts. The Sex Pistols or the Saints may have been better bands (debatable), but within the realm of "punk" music there is no finer LP than Singles Going Steady. Who'd have thought that punk could be informed by pop/psychedelia/Krautrock and thrive? I love how "Orgasm Addict" and a few others throw in the occasional weird 7/8 time signature, just so they can hack through a tangled thicket of syllables and arrive at an unforgettable chorus just that much quicker. "Why Can't I Touch It?" could almost pass for a punk version of "Thank You For Talking To Me Africa". As for being a bad influence, maybe; but they were also a GOOD influence on Husker Du, which is alright by me. And Maher was indeed one hell of a drummer. I have a new favourite every time - last time it was "Boredom", next time "I Don't Mind." (Or make that "I Don't Mi-yi-yi-yi-yi-yi-yind"!)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Monday, 9 August 2004 23:58 (nineteen years ago) link

I found that BBC2 documentary quite boring and depressing, it might have been because I was tired and it ended with them still being together and had Mark Lamarr being vaguely dismissive towards Howudd.

I can't believe Maher had only been playing drums for a few months when he joined. I was listening to What Do I Get recently to program it into a drum machine and expecting it to be quite easy and simplistic. Damn near made my brain bleed.

poopy - they've just released another singles collection, including stuff after the reunion. stick with your copy of Singles Going Steady tho - have bought that album several times, giving copies away and losing copies, and its *still* perfect.

stevie (stevie), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 08:06 (nineteen years ago) link

I listened to that Radio 2 documentary. The second half of the story was very depressing, as such histories usually tend to be. I mean I know they've all got to earn a living and reforming the Buzzcocks is probably better than signing on, but all that "a new age was about to start for the band as they found a new rhythm section in long-time fans Tom Cobbles and Norman Spinchter (or whatever they were called)" spin couldn't hide the probability that they really should have chucked it in back in '79. Also typical of Radio 2 that Devoto/A Different Kind Of Tension/Buzzkunst should have got comparatively short shrift, and indeed that Shelley's proto-electronica album from '74 (Sky Saw?) was not mentioned at all. But Morley on the "The" was priceless.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 08:14 (nineteen years ago) link

Lipstick. No-one's mentioned it yet so I will. Awesome tune. And a Devoto/Shelley crossbreeding guitar lick for Shot By Both Sides by Magazine later too.

beanz (beanz), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 08:53 (nineteen years ago) link

"(Sky Saw?)"

It was Sky Yen IIRC.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 09:33 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah I thought it was. Blue cover. "Sky Saw"'s an Eno song.

The doc also asserted that the reason why "Homosapien" wasn't the massive hit it should have been in '82 was because the BBC sniffed at the line "homo superior in my interior," interpreted it as meaning buggery and thereupon banned it. But IIRC it was pretty well played to death all over the radio at the time. Certainly should have been a hit.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 09:37 (nineteen years ago) link

another vote for Lipstick. i love that song so much...

i spent a weird evening with Diggle and pete shelley's irish nephew, who was now in the band, a few years back. a bunch of us went back to a friend's house after a lift to experience show, taking the band with us (steve and i had photographed/interviewed the band for Careless Talk that afternoon). we went via the marathon bar, a great all-night kebab place in chalk farm that sells beer and spirits after hours, and somehow Diggle and the kid tagged along, though they were drunk, and the kid was mouthy. we got back to the flat, and it was a weird scene. the kid kept saying that the Lift boys were queers, and being pretty nasty. ray, the guy who's house it was, was getting agitated, wanted to clock the guy with a baseball hat. i left about 3am, it was going far beyond weird. then, about 5am, steve confronted the guy, said that all this talk about being queer had got him horny and that he was going to fuck ray then and there, and if the kid didn't want to see it he should leave now. Diggle was nice, but sad and drunk and a bit tragic.

stevie (stevie), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 09:41 (nineteen years ago) link

Pete Shelley's Irish nephew? They didn't say anything about that in the documentary, just about these two guys who were fans of theirs and knew their back catalogue backwards and ended up as their new rhythm section. I presume Shelley's nephew didn't last long in the band?

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 09:49 (nineteen years ago) link

not sure... the way they were talking about it that night he was new to the band - i just assumed the line-up had changed since the reunion...

stevie (stevie), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 10:05 (nineteen years ago) link

But IIRC it was pretty well played to death all over the radio at the time. Certainly should have been a hit."

"Millions Of People (No-One Like You)" and "Telephone Operator" should have been massive hits too IMHO - and they didn't contain any such questionable lyrics - so did they offer any explanation for that?!?

"Pete Shelley's Irish nephew? They didn't say anything about that in the documentary, just about these two guys who were fans of theirs and knew their back catalogue backwards and ended up as their new rhythm section. I presume Shelley's nephew didn't last long in the band?"

Since reforming with the original line-up, the only bassist they've had is Tony Barber (who also plays for Chelsea) and apart from one tour with Mike Joyce (ex Smiths, of course) I'm pretty sure the only drummer they've had is Phil Barker (who's also one of the Stratford Mercenaries and was previously in a band called Lack Of Knowledge with Tony). Neither of these are related to PS as far as I know, but I do know a guy called Joey who's been their roadie since '77 so I'll try to dig his e-mail address out and ask him!

Fwiw they've actually had the current line up for more than 10 years.

Singles Going Steady was quite a bit better upon second listen, but I'm still disappointed. It isn't that the Buzzcocks necessarily fail at anything they attempt; rather, it's that the group doesn't seem very ambitious. But that's punk rock, innit?

Blame it on X-Ray Spex.

That was the only Buzzcocks record that I ever owned and I was also not so into it. I think "Ever Fallen Love" is a really good song, but beyond that, it seemed to me that there were a lot of songs that were just okay. (It's been a long time, so maybe I'm wrong.)

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 10 April 2005 20:01 (nineteen years ago) link

Speaking of their unfortunate influence: is it just me, or did the strokes rip their entire style from "Everybody's Happy Nowadays?" Take out the chorus and replace the vocals with Julian Casablancas's bad-cell-phone-connection singing and you get every song on "Is This It."

By the way, Buzzcock's are as classic as it gets. A little maudlin sometimes, but aren't we all.

This isn't going to be news for many of you, but it's fantastic. "Harmony in my Head," "Strange Thing," "Autonomy," "Why Can't I touch it?" all genius.

By the time you get to "Airwaves Dream," you're a million miles from "Orgasm" (one of the few songs I knew) - it's positively Joy Divisionish.

zeus (zeus), Thursday, 20 October 2005 22:21 (eighteen years ago) link

Classic obviously. Everyone hails the singles album, which I love, but it has it's flaws. Firstly, my vinyl copy has poor sound quality - too many tracks crammed in? Secondly, it misses out some essentials - the spiral scratch stuff and 'You Say You Don't Love Me' (and if that wasn't ever a single, it damn well should have been).
The 3 original studio albums I find it hard to choose between. Bookending 'Another Music' with the boredom riff was a stroke of genius, and that album has some fine shelley songs like Fast Cars, I Don't Mind, Fiction Romance. The 2 guitars on Autonomy are great, though diggle's singing sucks. Pulsebeat has one of my favourite drumbeats ever.
Love Bites is a patchier affair, despite boasting Ever Fallen in Love and Sixteen Again, which is my favourite BUzzcocks tune. some of the other shelley stuff is below par (though his bar was set very high). Side 2 kicks off with a great instrumental, but is a little too flat and samey. Late for the Train is ok, but a poor cousin to Pulsebeat.
I probably play 'A Different Kind of Tension' the most, despite there being too many Diggle songs on side 1 for my taste. However, the Shelley stuff is so good it more than compensates. The link between Mad Mad Judy and Raison D'etre is one of the finest moments that I own on vinyl. Side 2 goes all conceptual, mostly in a good way (though a little too abstract for my taste on the title track, perhaps - was that song an inspriation to radiohead???), but recovers again with the superb 'I Believe'.
I don't own any later stuff. Is Trade Test Transmission any good?

"I don't own any later stuff. Is Trade Test Transmission any good?"

It's good - but if you want to buy one post '89 Buzzcocks album I'd recommend 2003's Buzzcocks (for starters).

Quite apart from being probably the best album they've recorded since they reformed, it includes a version of the original Howie-era song "Lester Sands" (previously only available on the Time's Up bootleg) and a more aggressive take on "'Til The Stars In His Eyes Are Dead" (retitled simply "Stars") from the previous year's ShelleyDevoto album Buzzkunst.

I prefer TTT myself, but 'Buzzcocks' is pretty damned good too. Haven't heard the new one yet - my copy's in the post. Just don't break your neck to find copies of 'All Set' and 'Modern' cos they're decidedly patchy to these ears.

If you want to head the post '89 band in rip-roaring live form, then the two CDs issued by Dojo in 1995 are what you want: 'French', and the mail-order only 'Encore Du Pain'. IIRC they have been reissued as one double CD called 'The complete French sessions' or some such.

> All Set has one fantastic track - 'Your Love'. It's worth getting it for that.

There's 'Totally from the heart' and 'Give it to me' too. The rest of it's a bit shonky, though.

Is 'All set' the only out-of-print Buzzcocks album?

Niall, Thursday, 30 March 2006 15:42 (eighteen years ago) link

Probably is the only OOP studio one, yes, although as far as I know 'Tension' still hasn't been released on CD in the UK.

Anyway I picked up the rerelease of TTT (there's lots of copies for £3.95 in SellandBuy in Harrow) and I'm pleased to say that it sounds a lot better than the orig. It's still not a great production - the guitars are a bit diffuse at times and the drums are not well recorded - but it's a lot more listenable than before. I guess we're somewhat spoiled by the classic Rushent productions - urgent and poweful, yet lots of space. I don't know Ralph Ruppert, producer of TTT, anyone know what else he's produced? He's German apparently.

Don't ever recall seeing it myself, but Jeff Hall's discography says:

"CD released (UK) as EMI CZ93"

so maybe it was and it's also OOP?

Finally, after all these years, got to see the 'cocks last night at Beverley Leisure Centre - an incongruous venue and even more worryingly it was billed as part of the Beverley Folk Festival.

I wasn't expecting much.

Images of Shelley and Diggle morris dancing onto the stage in aran sweaters were exploded

THEY WERE FUCKING AMAZING!!! Wave after wave of the best pop punk songs on the planet.
Steve Diggle particularly was worth the price alone. A fucking nutter, grinning like a loon, pulling all the poses. Shelley just stood there with that cocked head belting out all the hits for the kids (actually old bastards like me withtheir kids).

The two 'new' guys were unnoticeable apart from laying down the impressive rhythm, which is how it should have been.

I was chuffed to bits for Shelley and Diggle. They seemed to be having a wail of a time. Ditto the audience. Saw a lot of old muckers too which made the night even sweeter for me. Nostalgia indeed.

They played every single song from first two albums in order. I thought I'd take a bar break for "Late For the Train" but even that was much more entertaining live than on record (the drummer had a blast with it). Diggle has aged well (I saw them in 06 but it was my birthday and had too many shots to remember it well) and Shelley looked like Archie Bunker, which made it even more awesome. It was a 110 degree sauna in there, but they were troopers, coming back out to play most of the remaining singles of the era. The set was well over 90 minutes!

"Hollow Inside" was always one of my fave Buzzcocks songs, even though it is ridiculously simple. It is also tinged with dread as Alfred mentioned above. I love the no-gap transition from the song before, and the way the guitars slam in the chords of the "chorus".

This Spiral Scratch reunion from 2012 makes for uncomfortable viewing, Devoto pretty much phones in his performance and can't wait to get offstage. They mess up the start of "Friends of Mine" and there seems to be tension onstage throughout. I was really excited when I heard about this – see above – but it looks like it was a big letdown.

13 Chicago RIOT FEST
14 Detroit St. Andrews Hall
17 Los Angeles The Fonda Theatre
18 Solana Beach, CA Belly Up
19 Denver RIOT FEST
20 Santa Ana, CA The Observatory - Bang Fest

I wanted to pick up their new CD in Philly but they sold out before the show was over and the places to get it on import are charging $25+ with shipping.

If someone going to one of those shows doesn't mind picking up a CD for me, I'll PayPal the cost + shipping to send it to me. Please email me if you can assist!
