Mark E, The Revenge & Slow-Motion House/Disco

But there are a host of excellent new labels and artists kicking about
now, especially on the slo-mo house scene who are making excellent music. Labels like
Prime Numbers and Trus’Me and artists like Mark E, Linkwood, The Revenge and Red Rack
Em. Their sound joins the dots in different ways between Moodymann style house, Detroit
techno, deep house and disco edits.

I was just going to start a Mark E thread, but that quote made me think it was worth broadening it out, and maybe this stuff is different enough from other well-covered trends to be worth talking about.

So S/D, C or D etc.

Basically I just love the really slow, but still quite driving stuff.

Jamie T Smith, Friday, 1 May 2009 15:51 (fourteen years ago) link

At first, I was kind of oblivious to the edit genre and was cooped up at home making these dark insular Theo-esque beat down swirlers, spending hours in a smoky haze listening to the same loop over and over. It was only when I didn't know how to end one of these loop marathons that I just dropped the original track in at the end, and [Womack and Womack edit] 'Scared' was born.

Jamie T Smith, Friday, 1 May 2009 15:52 (fourteen years ago) link

Plus if anyone wants to share R&B Drunkie that would be great ... I've only heard it on mixes.

Jamie T Smith, Friday, 1 May 2009 15:53 (fourteen years ago) link

And I haven't actually heard all the Jisco stuff, apart from The Revenge track. What's good?

So anything that's too slow to be regular house, and too house to be nu disco - edits or original productions - could be discussed here.

Jamie T Smith, Friday, 1 May 2009 16:00 (fourteen years ago) link

Mark E is an amazing DJ, mostly played faster stuff than his own productions, but he dropped one slo-mo track near the end was just right in context and really kept the energy going. The Detroit Experiment remix is lovely.

чалопик (Vasco da Gama), Friday, 1 May 2009 16:08 (fourteen years ago) link

jamie where is that initial quote from?

i've thought of starting a mark e thread for a while too. that low motion disco remix from last year seems like the prime example for this stuff. total opposite to all the floaty balearic stuff that's around - really tense and wound-up.

i'd been wondering if mark e himself was a one-off but in the last couple of months there's been a bunch of stuff come out that's related to the revenge and 6th borough project in particular, it does seem like there's more of a scene of sorts behind it. (i haven't heard much of it though so i can't really expand beyond that.) plus there was that linkwood RA podcast, which is fantastic.

trus'me seems a bit more reverent to the whole KDJ/theo thing. too reverent maybe.

butt_hurton (haitch), Friday, 1 May 2009 17:26 (fourteen years ago) link

And I haven't actually heard all the Jisco stuff, apart from The Revenge track. What's good?

EVERYTHING, I own and severely appreciate the following

Scared
(Mark E's first and possibly best edit of Womack & Womack's "Baby I'm Scared Of You")

Ray Gun/Touch
(More dubby disco action, slightly faster, not as remarkable as others but still great in sets)

Cadillac/Planets
(Quite possible The Revenge's most irresistible floor filler, put them on my radar at least)

Nightflight/Unfinished Edits.../Savin the Day
(More upbeat disco edits, including an edit of the track from Ghostbusters that I love)

You're Welcome
(Newcomer to Jisco Eddie C comes with "Let Your Mind Be Free" which has an incredible breakdown)

i'm game for any of the revenge/6th borough/craig smith stuff. search: just a memory, rocky mountain drifter, planets, do it to the max, Hit Em' (6th Borough Project Mix).

the mark e remix of think twice is my recent favorite of his.

the horn break at 4:00 in just a memory is pretty much the most sublime thing

jergins, Friday, 1 May 2009 18:19 (fourteen years ago) link

as far as revenge mixes and radio shows go, they are a bit hit and miss (too much talking on the radio shows). the ooft that's house mix from a few months ago is fun. http://ooft.blogspot.com/ is one of those that when a new post comes up on my reader it's a must-download

jergins, Friday, 1 May 2009 18:20 (fourteen years ago) link

i disagree with san frandisco above about mark e's "touch" not being as remarkable as the others, that track is definitely a favorite of mine. the hit:miss ratio with these guys' physical releases is amazingly high, even if you kinda have to sift through the podcasts/radio shows.

i haven't heard much from red rack em, can anyone reccomend anything in particular?

i am the eye in the sky... (psychgawsple), Friday, 1 May 2009 18:35 (fourteen years ago) link

could anyone share the remix? the pressure dub is on youtube, but i have yet to hear the remix

space cowboy (san frandisco), Friday, 1 May 2009 18:36 (fourteen years ago) link

psych, you're right man, i meant really in relative terms really. his scared edit is quite possible one of my favorite edits, like of all time, and Smiling, which came after is also like incredible. touch and ray gun for anyone else would be great tracks, but for mark e they seem almost pedestrian

space cowboy (san frandisco), Friday, 1 May 2009 18:37 (fourteen years ago) link

but they're still great, i still play them out

space cowboy (san frandisco), Friday, 1 May 2009 18:37 (fourteen years ago) link

also DO NOT forget about his Sun Shadow edit on Creative Use

sun shadow is great, agreed. also worth mentioning is his 'love the action' mix for cool in the pool... http://www.coolinthepool.com/markeinterview2.html.

i am clearly going to have to have another listen to the mans stuff, given that seeing this thread pop up all the time is going to do my fucking head in.

mark e, Friday, 1 May 2009 20:42 (fourteen years ago) link

got that ghost note just for the mark e side. and it patiently builds to awesomeness. so so good.

i like his take on edits in the interview. like, with hip hop and (esp older) house and tons of other sample-based dance stuff there wasn't really the need to call them edits when you take loops and do your own thing with them. maybe too much of this stuff is referred to as edits than should be. of course "edit" is on everyone's tip of the tongue lately. and there's threads and fights about it everywhere already so i'll just shut up about it now.

So this is a thread for people who wish they were Theo but aren't nearly as good? Exciting. R&B Drunkie is my jam tho, I also had to pick up the JJ 12" to mix in with it.

pipecock, Friday, 1 May 2009 22:39 (fourteen years ago) link

i think what i love most about this genre is the bpms could be considered practically downtempo, but the way the tracks are arranged gives them that awesome chugging energy that makes you want to dance, at like 95 bpms (or faster)

space cowboy (san frandisco), Friday, 1 May 2009 22:40 (fourteen years ago) link

Real question: is this stuff analagous to chopped-and-screwed hip-hop?

Matos W.K., Friday, 1 May 2009 22:45 (fourteen years ago) link

I don't mean "does it sound like it," more "are there parallels." Seems like it to me. I like this stuff a lot, the little I've heard. And of course the Mark E RA Podcast was tremendous.

Matos W.K., Friday, 1 May 2009 22:47 (fourteen years ago) link

The Macallan 18 Year, Friday, 1 May 2009 23:11 (fourteen years ago) link

i have been mixing this stuff every other wednesday night at Seattle's Grey Gallery. Last night I started at 91bpm and moved through the Lissvik mix of Fever Ray into some Meanderthals, Rune Lindbaek, Cousin Cole, Revenge edits and more. Highlight of the set for me was going from Sabres of Paradise - Edge 6 into the Pressure Drop mix of Why Can't We Live Together. Set finished at 107bpms with the Revenge edit of One of These Nights.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 1 May 2009 23:15 (fourteen years ago) link

*set also included Reggie Dokes - Black Children of the Ghetto which sounded much better over the PA than it has on my headphones.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 1 May 2009 23:16 (fourteen years ago) link

Reggie Dokes blows all these other guys away. He's possibly my favorite producer at this point.

space cowboy (san frandisco), Friday, 1 May 2009 23:25 (fourteen years ago) link

The Red Rack Em mix for Cool in the Pool is great as well, treading the (arguably non-existent) line between this sound and Theo/Moodymann.

what don't you like about it space cowboy?

The Macallan 18 Year, Friday, 1 May 2009 23:30 (fourteen years ago) link

matos: i think it depends on the artist really. some of the tracks are tripped out chopped up disco edits and some are super-linear slow house.

I always think Mark E being from Manchester makes a lot of sense cos his stuff feels so like the Unabombers type of music, in a really huge way. I recommend people here check out Electric Soul 1 and 2 (not heard some of the later CDs.) I don't usually go for downtempo "nu soul" or whatever but those mixes are the more than acceptable face with lots of house/disco stuff too...

after listening to this stuff for the past week or two I gotta admit I think most of those Revenge edits are pretty pointless. the original Rene & Angela is about 1000x better than their version. the exception is the Eagles one, that's pretty sweet (reminds me of the Tiedye dub of Tom Petty)

best thing about disco edits is that they can turn a piece of shit like "love you inside out" into the greatest song ever
ok, i haven't heard the edit, but if this is such a piece of shit, how can performing a re-edit magically turn it into the greatest song ever? is it the vocals that need to be removed? drums ? everything? this ventures into the weird in-between re-edits --> dub ---> remix discussion which i think happened already but whatever. i am drunk btw

so is there an edit of "lowdown" that just extends the intro and removes the "cheezy" bridge yet?

QE II, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 06:08 (fourteen years ago) link

I wrote this last year attempting to explain the Bee Gees re-edit's appeal: http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/its-a-hit/Content?oid=643670. Basically, he swamps the thing in so much echo, isolates so many appealing musical aspects (the flecking wah-wah guitar, string zings, a clomping beat he doubles with a machine), and reshapes everything. The original is melba toast; the re-edit is the E hitting.

It's not about the fries themselves, but the community that has invested in preparing them, packaging them, eating them, and sometimes digging them out of crates.

Europeans don't get this, they think the experience of fries is all about some new seasonal flavouring.

http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=604087574&ref=profile#/note.php?note_id=76640447886&ref=nf

***SPOILER*** if you have not seen the season finale, read no further. also there will be a small spoiler about stephen kings' THE STAND. i'll let ya know when i get there. ****

so, it all comes down to what john locke told walt in season one. the black rock vs. the white rock. good vs. evil. jacob vs. esau. we now have in place the pieces of the final war. we also have the shucking off of the sub-plots that have made the story so mind bending. of course that could be a bad thing for those of us who love that aspect of the LOST game. anyway, some observations.

RELIGION & PHILOSOPHY
we now know why egypt has been so important to the storytelling in lost. the egyptian book of the dead is the foundation of all the worlds dominant religions (i know some will debate its' importance to buddhism but heck, most folks who follow it don't consider buddhism a religion anyway). so, LOST is exploring the very nature of our religious tendencies. jacob as a christ like benevolent god. esau as the serpent. the island the garden of eden (or mu, or atlantis), a place of alchemy where scientific, magical, & spiritual properties co-exist.

the philosophy part is as simple & complex as free will versus pre-determination. jacob placed our heroes in their spots giving them the chance to make the right choices that will lead to their redemption. the choice is always theirs. esau manipulates the weak, seeing the human animal as a fixed system that will always make the same choices over & over again.

WHAT ILANA SAID TO RICHARD ALPERT
"what lies in the shadow of the statue ?"
alpert: "he who will protect/save us"
(thanks to all the latin scholars over at darkufo for that quick translation last night)
so, my take on this is that jacob is not only our heroes redemptive figure, he is humanity's redemptive figure. the island itself is the reset button or lynchpin for the entire world. jacob & esau fight not just for the souls of the castaways but for the fate of the entire world. will humanity break the cycle of constant war or find some form of redemption (what this redemption will look like i'm not sure of yet).

A MAN WHO THOUGHT HE WAS A GOD
eloise, widmore, ben, the so called leaders of the others have all thought themselves masters of the game. they have all tried to take control of the island. they are just wannabes. the chumps in the casino thinking they've got a system, when the house always wins. each was exiled in some manner for their hubris (though we have not witnessed eloise in this manner, so i'll reserve judgement on that one).

wish i'd actually bought 'a collage education' for excellent rework of 'love can't turn around'.

love 'back 2 back' and ruf dog 'dirty' 12"s (which i did get).

dirty is so insane!

itt: kinda out there, maybe kinda experimental, maybe kinda pretentious modern r&b

jaxon, Sunday, 4 October 2009 17:28 (fourteen years ago) link

mark e just released tons of stuff. i dig the freakin shriekin 12", and the one on endless flight (codsall juniors?) is growing on me

all instruments of rapture stuff from this year is also v good, tho the revenge seems to be falling off a bit with most of his other releases and remixes

also the don froth 12" from early this year is still doing it for me tho. and don't forget about the linkwood album!!!

psychgawsple, Sunday, 4 October 2009 20:19 (fourteen years ago) link

Some of the MCDE Raw Cuts tracks are right up this street too

plazzTT, Monday, 5 October 2009 00:42 (fourteen years ago) link

The recent Mark E 12" on Merc has a side ("track 1") that sounds like a slowed down house-y edit of an R-Tyme track!

three weeks pass...

so yeah, this is pretty much going to be the next big thing, i think, as the cosmic disco / balearic trend slowly dies down

so what's really good and new?

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 28 October 2009 04:31 (fourteen years ago) link

It's not super-new, but have you heard "Walk in Deepness" by Reggie Dokes? (on Prime Numbers) That is my jam. It's 120 BPM psychedelic jazz house, but sounds awesome pitched down.

The new Big Strick single on FXHE is very good as well. There are some techno tracks on it, but "A Walk Down Linwood" is definitely fitting for this thread. It came out on the FXHE comp earlier this year, but the new single has two versions. Beautiful keys.

t (tricky), Wednesday, 28 October 2009 04:53 (fourteen years ago) link

Gotta agree with you tricky, that whole EP is pretty mindblowing. Its a shame we might lose him to making R'n'B.

I guess its not a shame for the autotune cru though, I'm kinda curious what his stuff might sound like.

Apparently he's a big Jam and Lewis head.

Back when I still had a weekly I played Jam and Lewis's Latin mix of Patti Austin Heat of Heat all the time. The semi-empty bar appreciated that, my friends begged me to play dubstep instead.

But that kind of late 80s modern soul slots in like a dream with this kind of thing.

Obviously with the Janet edit.

Anybody care for a FLAC of the track?

Reggie Dokes.

The John Daly - Sea & Sky album is pretty good. Can't wait for the Juju and Jordash album but I anticipate that being a bit faster in the bpm range.

matt2, Wednesday, 28 October 2009 16:02 (fourteen years ago) link

speaking of 'yo dawgs, this is deep house', the Lerosa mix up on InfiniteStateMachine is pretty much Slow Motion House. image even says Dead Slow. It's not very well mixed but the tracks are excellent.

A: Yes, I am currently producing R&B, Pop and Hip Hop in Atlanta. That was one of my reasons for coming to Atlanta, Georgia. I appreciate most genres of music, and it has always been a passion of mine to pursue and challenge myself creatively. Right now as far as R&B producers of the past, it would have to be Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Baby Face and L.A. Reid and Teddy Riley. In the present it would have to be Tricky Stewart and The Dream, Danja Handz, Timbaland and the Neptunes.

hobbes, Friday, 5 March 2010 01:37 (fourteen years ago) link

agree in that he's pretty samey tone/feel wise. it's often the source material that makes his tracks add up, but i'm ok with dance producers having a certain groove they hit repeatedly in slightly different ways. i think he's best when his samples give some extra rhythmic push (the piano pedals in "you") or he's a little more active on the drums (slave1 snares).

i would've put beat down on there myself.

Erdbeerschnitzel's been great, especially "To An End" and "The Edit"
Trujillo - "Baby You're Still The Same (Social Disco Club Sexual Flashback Mix)"
Lewie Day - "That's The Thing" (this went over big opening for Tensnake)
Bozzwell - "In My Cocoon" (not as loose or disco-derived as a lot of these, but a really nice 116bpm slow burn)
Rocha - Feel The Love (original and the Greg Wilson remix)
Kaine ft. Kathy Diamond - "Love Saves The Day" (the Mario Basanov mix is brighter and poppier, the Soul Clap mix wanders around and brings in a really unexpected breakbeat around 3:18)

pretty sure it wasn't teengirl fantasy that sampled that underworld track, at least not on "cheaters"- i think the synth line is original in that song, the other part samples love committee i blv

As long as there's at least one track on it up to the standard of "R&b Drunkie" or "Scared" this will be worthy of my time. I only found out a few weeks ago there's a second Works 2005-2009 compilation, which made for an ideal unexpected surprise.

Revenge album is OK, a nice collection of edits but a bit of a hodgepodge and not quite the deep-beat slo-mo jams we're used to from him. More along the lines of other fare from Z Records (Joey Negro's label). the Mark E album, on the other hand, is fucking great. most of the tracks hover around 115 but the slower ones are killer. Really digging it at the moment.
Other stuff that should be getting talked about in this thread:

Duff Disco
Dead Rose Music Company
Daniel Solar and his label Dikso (I believe it's his)
Sleazy Beats label
Eclectic Avenue label
LTJ, the Super Value and Small World Disco labels

andrew m., Thursday, 5 May 2011 18:49 (twelve years ago) link

brother's gonna work it out revenge edit is great because it's trippy and cinemascopic and pretty dramatic when the strings kick in towards the end. It's pretty far out from the OG as far as edits go.

blank, Thursday, 5 May 2011 23:46 (twelve years ago) link

totally otm

perhaps you can explain it, gr8080

deej i was just clowning cause you used the "maybe i dont get it" qualifier twice in your post ;]

sounds like someone's fucking with the mixer & playing another track on top of it at the wrong speed.

imo it abandons the bombastic soundtracky shift from the first part to the 2nd part of the original and in turn recreates a slow, building thing thats more ~atmosphere~ than energy. blank's totally otm on how when the strings drop in, they're dramatic, but imo not in a build-and-release way: more sunrise than atom bomb.

plus the greatest part of the original is the crazy tom pattern in the drums.

agreed, but i love how he kills them and instead replicates that rhythm with that really tight kick drum sound that repeats over and over.

best kind of re-edit imo

seems both mark-e and the revenge have abandoned this sound now, ive done gigs with both recently and wasnt really feeling what theyre plying, slightly harder and faster with none vocals or cheeky samples that made their names. Perhaps a reaction to getting bigger gigs?

straightola, Thursday, 8 September 2011 15:19 (twelve years ago) link

i think it probably is a reaction to those bigger gigs, and it's weird that all the interesting aspects of their earlier sounds keep getting washed out over time as they play at bigger and bigger clubs. it's not like it's impossible to draw out a faster song and treat it in a similar way to all the slomo stuff, so abandoning that sound really doesn't make much sense to me.

idk if lovebirds fit this category but this one is a nice example of how to ramp up those bpms and keep things idiosyncratic...

looks kind of like house-influenced big beat or vice versa. maybe they are just moving back to that sound now that edits are kind of passe.

mr peabody (moonship journey to baja), Thursday, 8 September 2011 17:03 (twelve years ago) link

i think one of things abt a lot of these tracks is that while they seem DJ-oriented i dont get the impression that being a good DJ is necessarily reflective of being a good producer of songs like this. that at some level, they are sort of at odds

D-40, Thursday, 8 September 2011 17:48 (twelve years ago) link

i mean thats at some level a 'well duh' kind of thing but i think its partic true with the slow motion stuff

D-40, Thursday, 8 September 2011 17:48 (twelve years ago) link

what do you mean? i have some questions about what you're getting at.

what seems dj-oriented about these tracks? what makes tracks dj oriented (as opposed to merely seeming like it). what makes a good dj? a good producer of songs like this? how are they at odds?

mr peabody (moonship journey to baja), Thursday, 8 September 2011 17:53 (twelve years ago) link

i guess what i mean is, there are producers, and there are DJs, and producers who make songs people like end up becoming DJs, and that while they may have DJ'd before producing now they are suddenly booking more & more (and bigger) gigs, and suddenly they find that certain kinds of songs work better at certain times in sets, and that all-slow-motion-all-the-time can actually be pretty monotonous, so they start 'finding themselves' as DJs and subsequently lose the particular magic/distinctiveness of their producer-ly days as they start diversifying. Something is gained, something lost

D-40, Thursday, 8 September 2011 17:56 (twelve years ago) link

this is a generalization

D-40, Thursday, 8 September 2011 17:56 (twelve years ago) link

i havent seen any new Revenge sets or anything

D-40, Thursday, 8 September 2011 17:56 (twelve years ago) link

oh i see this is not specific to "slow motion house"

mr peabody (moonship journey to baja), Thursday, 8 September 2011 18:10 (twelve years ago) link

well doesnt have to be but seems like it could be applicable in this case?

D-40, Thursday, 8 September 2011 18:21 (twelve years ago) link

was just spitballin

D-40, Thursday, 8 September 2011 18:21 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i think it is sort of a "condition" afflicting all of dance music ... the DJ / producer divide. although often that leads down a boring trail (functionalism vs auterism, etc).

i was more wondering if you thought there was a specific reason that line of thought was particularly applicable to this style, except for the fact that it seems like these guys are sorta flailing at the moment.

mr peabody (moonship journey to baja), Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:09 (twelve years ago) link

remember reading an early interview with Mark E as he was first (and fast) becoming a name, and he hit on at least one angle of what you're saying, D-40, and spoke about tempo. He was like yeah, I make this slow stuff because it's funky and fun but when I DJ it's a lot of uptempo house that I love with this slower stuff dappled here and there at the right moments.

It reminded me of Michael Mayer in '04 saying schaffel was never meant to be The Sound of a whole night or mix or whatever, but rather dropped in to enhance the atmosphere. 'Course looking back Kompakt didn't really practice what he preached, what with whole mixes of the stuff and whatnot

andrew m., Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:44 (twelve years ago) link

moonship- do you actually want to know what those tracks sound like? or were you positing that the revenge were uptempo to begin with?

i think linkwood has fared the best with more uptempo sounds, eg "electricity" and ESPECIALLY "one" (or dirty love or w/e was the first track on that 'from the vaults' release)

a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Thursday, 8 September 2011 21:22 (twelve years ago) link

"get up on it" is pretty rad, very in line with the first releases on instruments of rapture. the vocal sample is relatively cheeky too i suppose, has nothing to do with big beat to my knowledge

a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Thursday, 8 September 2011 21:29 (twelve years ago) link

no, i actually want to know what that stuff sounds like ... when i first got into slo mo house i scoured the net for those five20east singles but it seems like they never really made it to mp3

they look like big beat albums to my eyes, but as i said, i've never heard them.

mr peabody (moonship journey to baja), Thursday, 8 September 2011 21:30 (twelve years ago) link

oh well i would theorize that, in particular, slow mo disco doesnt seem particularly fun back to back to back in a dj set ... lots of dance movements come out of ~dance scenes~ as opposed to this which feels more producer-led

i think 2011 has especially been a bummer year for this stuff because all these guys are now releasing full length albums, and this is a sound (as deej noted) that really gets stale when played back to back for considerable amounts of time. at least we got a few good cuts on the mark e and 6th borough lps, and everything tiger & woods has put out this year just keeps sounding better the more times i hear it

no ones gonna step into a club they got booked to play and drop a whole set of this stuff, especially past midnight, and especially if they're the out-of-town headliner.

no dj is an island, etc.

i cant remember what track it was, but i was playing something straight off of this thread at this lounge bar i had a regular gig at. i'd always stay in this style from about 9:00 or 10:00 PM until about 11:30, slowly working my way from below 100 bpm up to around 116 over the course of an hour or two. about a half hour in to my set, (and a good 6 minutes in to the track i was playing), the bar was just starting to fill up, and this past-middle-aged sex-in-the-city looking lady got up from her s eataround the corner, walked up to my booth, gave me an exasperated look and just exclaimed "switch it up please!! its getting monotonous!!!"

i can't remember but i think i might have been playing this:

i would say mark e's works vol 1 & 2 absolutely slaughter the revenge and 6th borough's efforts, and that neither album lives up to their earlier singles

not sure if it's slo mo but it's definitely slow compared to most house tracks AND its got that crucial disco strut

was working on a "rough guide to slow motion house" thing for a friend that doesn't know the sound

here's what i got on it so far:

fudge fingas, 6th borough project, the revenge, OOFT, mindless boogie (the edit dudes), a rick wilhite marvin gaye edit thingy, popular people front, theo parrish and ugly edits, mark e, some ashley beedle disco edits, black science orchestra

what am i missing?

i'm not actually that familiar w/ tiger & woods or eddie c. never heard of dead rose. what are their "smash hits"?

Dead Rose Music Company - Never Gonna Stop

ESSENTIAL

Tim F, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 23:09 (twelve years ago) link

my favorites by eddie c would be 'deepa' and 'space cadet'. not sure what his most popular track is though, maybe 'do it yourself'.

another essential dead rose music company track: 'bad desire'

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 10 April 2012 23:20 (twelve years ago) link

Tiger & Woods "Gin Nation" was pretty huge and got a bit of press did it not? "Kissmetellme" and "El Dickital" were my other favourites from the LP but their early EPs had some good stuff, one track I loved based around an Evelyn King sample called "Come Down."

Anything off the Eddie C album is recommended, although the first half is better, far drowsier and oneiric. I'd also recommend some Francis Inferno Orchestra, probably "I Need It" is his best, and Duff Disco, especially the slightly obvious but still-fun "Return Of The Duff."

boxedjoy, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 23:24 (twelve years ago) link

It wasn't a huge anthem or anything but by perhaps my favourite slo-mo house tune of last year (or equal favourite with "Never Gonna Stop") was Matthew Kyle's "Off My Mind".

Tim F, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 23:32 (twelve years ago) link

Gin Nation almost seems to be pushing the BPMs up a bit for this thread but it is a good track

this one is too but I can't stop playing it, so great

Suzanne Kraft - Turning

I'm kinda blurring the line between slo-mo and just regular disco edits now I guess

dmr, Wednesday, 11 April 2012 00:38 (twelve years ago) link

Gin Nation is only like 106 bpm

I consider anything around 116 and under game here, though two tracks at the same tempo can feel like vastly different speeds.

some stuff is maybe TOO SLOW to fit in, under 100 or so, like...

not to turn this into a "guess the identity" thread but is it known who Tiger & Woods is? they do live dates and stuff right? just because of the name thing I wondered if it was Rub & Tug related, I dunno.

honestly there should just be a catch all thread for slow stuff/disco/deep house/edits/balearic along this continuum b/c i love this stuff and most of it isn't really all that slow anymore, but it all makes since mixed together in a set

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 28 May 2013 20:26 (ten years ago) link

love Suzanne Kraft. namely the EP on Running Back and "Jus U" on that earlier Young Adults comp.

looking forward to digging through some of your other links, thanks.

dmr, Tuesday, 28 May 2013 20:28 (ten years ago) link

Thanks for all these tips!

I am with karl, for some reason this stuff wouldn't feel right in the bobbins threads to me even though it's basically just slower deep house these days.

boxedjoy, Tuesday, 28 May 2013 20:43 (ten years ago) link

oops, makes sense*

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 28 May 2013 20:50 (ten years ago) link

I chanced upon this from retro nu disco, rather than slo-mo house. So I'm not exactly sure whether the better recent comps like Ushuaia Ibiza 'The Beach Album' or Dmitri from Paris - Back in the House belong here rather than in the Aeroplane-like summer jams thread. I can say the artists I follow, like Moon Boots, Gigamesh, and Plastic Plates are all pretty vibrant this summer.

Missed the René Breitbarth album late last year, but it seems to be up in only slightly abbreviated form on Soundcloud. File alongside Suzanne Kraft's slow-mo nu-disco.

thread is decidedly lacking mention of fellow glasgow brethren MERMAIDS: https://soundcloud.com/mermaidsmha

young in the game, but extremely promising original productions and mixes.

a few official releases incl something on OOFT!'s foto imprint, but tons of gems on that page.

Thanks anza808 I really liked Mermaids. Have you seen them live?

i haven't, but here's a great short mix they had up on their soundcloud earlier this year and took down - "Secrets of the Space Crystal." still trying to figure out what a few of these tunes are: http://goo.gl/tC3ykZ

That "Secrets of the Space Crystal" mix is so good and I'm really enjoying their Forever Dusk EP. Really great stuff.

is it just me or is the world truly lacking good disco edits nowadays? i'm browsing the juno charts/bestsellers and many of them suck. am i looking in a wrong place? but juno used to give me some decent disco jams.

i thought this one from late last year was pretty nice (thanks to karl i blv?)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fE9FBrrBdBA

seems like a disco edit to me, but i'm not sure a new soundstream track can be seen as proof of a thriving edits scene or anything

they're disco edits by definition, I guess. but not THE genre. they're disco edit in a way moodymann and theo is disco edit.

Mark E's new album is good but I prefer the Black Country Roots EP.

6th Borough Project new album has a few solid numbers on it, notably "Read My Mind"

What else is going on here that's good?

the late great, Sunday, 5 April 2015 21:20 (nine years ago) link

maybe a bit, but afaik he's always hovered around the 110's

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Sunday, 5 April 2015 21:24 (nine years ago) link

i kind of stopped following this scene because i never really felt like listening to a whole set of it and also because it's too hard to mix w regular paced 120-ish stuff

the late great, Sunday, 5 April 2015 21:27 (nine years ago) link

Such a tremendous amount of this stuff if one goes digging, particularly edging into nu-disco and funky house domains.
