yeah, dam funk is the shit. I have to give Pipecock credit, I slept on this dude for a few weeks until he twisted my arm to check his shit out.

I have a copy of Rhythm Tracks IV and about half of it is bananas, the other half is alright. I still need to hunt down the other two records he has done.

i've seen him live a few times. some of my friends (http://beatelectric.blogspot.com/) used to do a regular boogie/disco night and brought him up. i dig the way he talks into a mic over all his songs. i honestly had no idea any of the stuff he was playing. it all sounded like rare zapp and roger unreleased tracks. maybe a lot of it was his own stuff?

still have yet to hear his album.

i want to know more about how dam funk produces his stuff... he said in an interview somewhere that it was without the use of sequencers. how's that possible? unless he means, like, sequencing programs like logic or ableton, the synth arpeggios and drum patterns must be sequenced... no?

pshrbrn, Friday, 24 July 2009 07:11 (fourteen years ago) link

theres no way he doesnt use sequencers. the stuff i heard sounded like some old p funk sessioner playing over madlib beats. maybe he meant for the synths or something.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Friday, 24 July 2009 10:01 (fourteen years ago) link

Perhaps what he means is that he programmes the drum machine to play the beats (true, that is a sequencer of sorts, but an external sequencer is what most people think of by the term 'sequencer'). He then plays in free time over the top, recording successive passes to multitrack tape (or maybe a digital recorder acting as a multitrack). That would be exactly what most people did in the early '80s.

dubmill, Friday, 24 July 2009 10:49 (fourteen years ago) link

My guess is that he uses old hardware and plays the keys by hand into whatever he uses to record.

A lot of older synths use a +5volt trigger to step their arpeggiator. This allows you to play arps by hand and still have the arpeggiator locked to the drum machine. He is definitely using a drum machine, you can't get that stiff jitter that his drums have by hand.

Washing Machine by Mr. Fingers is a classic example of this. Its a Juno 60 being played by hand and the arp is being fired by a 707 trig out.

your original display name is still visible (Display Name), Friday, 24 July 2009 10:50 (fourteen years ago) link

what i do is just play something once into Logic, then select that little bit and keep copying and pasting it as many times as i want, pretty easy and way easier than messing around with old weird apreggiators and shit, i can't never figure out old keyboard at all.

tulsa anti-juggalo league (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 24 July 2009 16:10 (fourteen years ago) link

apparently there's this program called ableton that does that all for you now. you don't even have to play anything, just click "make beat" and voila.

damo tsu tsuki (r1o natsume), Friday, 24 July 2009 16:45 (fourteen years ago) link

that sounds pretty cool.

Fly is Vol. 2 of the 'digital release' from my new project Toeachizown. The 1st 3 joints on this volume consist of my continued steps into the 'electric-space-funk' style I'm humbled 2 share with U from my mind, yet this time out, with a more 'danceable' vibe 2 it. U know, for the clubs...worldwide! The first 3 tracks “Flying V Ride” (which is a reference 2 the fabled UFO that many have reported seeing in their lifetime), “Candy Dancin’” & “Burn Straight Thru U” co-exist as a 'suite' called “The Move Suite”. Yes, 3 songs that are joined together as 1. This is why the 'drum machine pattern' is the same on these 3 particular songs. “Candy Dancin’” also features a wicked synth solo & vocoder contribution by the 1 and only Mark de Clive-Lowe.

The remaining 3 joints of this volume on this 'digital release': “10 West”, “I Wanna Know” (a vocal) & “Rollin’” represent exactly what the title of this volume is: Fly. They're joints that U can roll 2. Let your hair down 2. Vibe with a lady 2 (or vice-versa), + stay 'fly' 2. I know there's still some fly ladies & gentlemen out there. This Vol. 2 from my Toeachizown project is...4 U.

i'm just worried this will be a repeat of my experience seeing d4rshan jesr4ni of metro area, in which i expected to hear a bunch of metro area-ish tracks and instead was treated to a two hour set of boring (to me) unclassics revivalism. which also led to a really butthurt personal email from d4rshan after i posted about it on ILM.

i would much much rather hear dam funk spin his own music than spin a two hour set of gap band and prince tracks, so i'm hoping that's what happens. i assume he's not playing live or anything.

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 6 August 2009 21:12 (fourteen years ago) link

he does great boogie mixes tho ... i mean, hes a party DJ, thats what hes known for, so he might be BETTER at unclassics revivalism ...

butthurt (deej), Thursday, 6 August 2009 22:06 (fourteen years ago) link

he cleared the floor by playing lots of g-funk and lots of instrumental early 80s tracks with super-loud bass. didn't really sound anything like his mixes. he did sing along to nearly every track though, making up really silly lyrics

man, i got into some major beef with a jerk on ISM about Dam-Funk, where i said that his productions are excellent but his DJ sets are spotty. the guy attacked me for no reason, saying i had no right to diss such a great producer, and i was like, "dude, you can't read. if a guy train-wrecks again and again and again during a DJ set, i'm not going to lick his balls."

anyway, yeah, seen him live a few times, totally spotty. can be so damn good you drip just listening to it or so bad that you get 'tard tingles.

I for one welcome this new Nazi ILX (Local Garda), Saturday, 8 August 2009 00:08 (fourteen years ago) link

i have to say his mixing was fairly tight last night and his "vocal stylings" were in key and on point ... i just found the selection of music he played to be much, much less compelling than what i've heard from toeachizown

moonship journey to baja, Saturday, 8 August 2009 00:09 (fourteen years ago) link

everything he played sounded like a version of "atomic dog" minus the mids and treble, which is not the great thing it sounds like on paper

moonship journey to baja, Saturday, 8 August 2009 00:10 (fourteen years ago) link

i like some of the vocal stuff except the part in the bbc one where he says something about "if a fella asks you to dance and you say no, i'm going to be annoyed." or something.

i mean seriously that's pretty creepy.

I for one welcome this new Nazi ILX (Local Garda), Saturday, 8 August 2009 00:11 (fourteen years ago) link

blah blah blah 'i don't care about trainwrecks.' maybe true, but i do. if you're not going to do proper mixes, then just play the songs sans mixing. it will be much more pleasant that way, imho.

Just grabbed the album now. As usual, I am two to three months behind ILM on everything. Perpetually sleeping. Missed seeing him in Montreal back in September at a tiny loft/club. Will smack myself in the head repeatedly for the next day or two.

Is it still possible to track down those original EPs, though? It appears as though the tracks have been significantly shortened on the full-length album. Or am I misreading this information?

Look at the track lengths. All I know is that my version of the title track is 2 minutes long and on the original EP it is apparently 5. This is not the only instance of this. Also, there are at least two tracks not on the full-length? Can't figure out which ones.

k3vin k., Friday, 23 October 2009 02:30 (fourteen years ago) link

kind of curious why he'd edit down some of these...longer versions of tracks in funk are always better, as a general rule.

Binkie & The-Dream: One is a Terius, the other's insAY!ne (Alex in Montreal), Friday, 23 October 2009 02:30 (fourteen years ago) link

cuz there are only so many minutes of music that can be on a cd?

everybody loves am0n (J0rdan S.), Friday, 23 October 2009 02:31 (fourteen years ago) link

the track lengths don't look to be that big of a deal tbh - "search 4 funk's future" & "LAtrifying" seem to have been cut down a few minutes but every other track just has a few seconds on at the end and i'm sure that's because he had to mix all the songs into each other differently than on the EP & because of time constraints

Embarrassingly, I'd never heard of DaM-FunK before this thread got revived. A few sound clips in, a quick trip to the record store to see if they had a copy of the 5-LP Toeachizown box (THEY DID), a few sides deep, and HOLY hell this is brilliant shit. I'm grinning like an idiot at pretty much every single track, and there are still 2 1/2 LPs to go. He makes keyboard pitchbending seem like simultaneously the most elemental and most out-there thing I've ever heard. I kind of feel like if everyone in the world could listen to one of his tracks simultaneously we might be able to achieve world peace.

"I'm tired of people making songs like 'Niggas in Paris'. You got millionaires like Kanye and Jay-Z who still have the nerve to use that kind of word and have the whole world running around talking about niggas in Paris. What are you doing? You got millions, fool. What are you doing making my race look bad? You don't ever hear people say 'Kikes in Paris', 'Chinks in Paris', 'Wetbacks in Paris'? So why do you degrade my race and my people? I'm tired of it, I'm not degrading my black people in my music, I won't. I won't be like those other coons doing it right now."

the late great, Wednesday, 4 December 2013 21:24 (ten years ago) link

it's definitely the best thing (at least that i've heard) that snoop has done in awhile, just because i think dam-funk's sort of drifting clouds of synth funk sort of fit what snoop can do now, just be a sort of amiable presence and do some nice sing-songy routines and stuff

It's a good one, always found some good rare tracks in his mixes you won't hear anywhere else.

Besides this record collection thing above, which is so great, he just dropped a little EP called Glyde 2Nite:

oh damn...the Hood Pass Intact EP is incredible. D-F's stuff is really great I've come to realize but he's better when he works with a vocalist. new album looks to be full of that kinda thing which is a good sign!

frogbs, Thursday, 27 August 2015 16:42 (eight years ago) link

loving that mix posted upthread muchas gracias!!!

Dâm seems like the archetypal guy who has figured out how to live

MC Whistler (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 27 August 2015 17:47 (eight years ago) link

^^awesome thank you! (still need to hear the mix you posted earlier though)

digging the new album a lot, much more energetic party feel imo, less of the spacier out-there funk of "come on outside" or "searchin 4 funk's future" which are two of my favorite tunes from toeachizown so i'm a little bummed it doesn't quite have that spacey vibe (though "acceptance" on the new one works pretty well)

ariel pink tune is one of the weakest here, pretty much exclusively b/c of ariel lol (and i am a fan of AP at least the pre-before today albums)

this DJ Kicks set is incredible

frogbs, Monday, 6 June 2016 04:17 (seven years ago) link

He just did a 2-track single with Ekkah as well.

"Space Between Us" is the better of the two songs, but "What's Up" is the only one on Youtube.

enjoying the DJ-Kicks, it sounds p much exactly what you would imagine a Dam Funk DJKicks to sound like, which is good.

Surprised there's almost no discussion of "Invite the Light" on here. is it because this thread is hard to search for or are people tuckered out on the dude's sound? I'm on listen #4 now, it gets a bit better each time, the longer tunes like "O.B.E." and especially "Floating On Air" are excellent, I also dig "Surveillance Escape" for its sheer campiness. The Ariel Pink tune pretty much bites it though, I'm afraid.

Thanks for the reminder - slept on that one! The Nite-Funk EP is really nice.

Everything Moves Towards The Sun (Ross), Wednesday, 28 December 2016 18:35 (seven years ago) link

Don't love it as much as Toeachizown or the Steve Arrington joint, but that's just relative points on a scale of stuff I love

Rock Wokeman (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 28 December 2016 18:48 (seven years ago) link

wasn't a huge fan of the Arrington album - it is nice but to me it just feels like he's adding lyrics to already-finished D-F tracks, several of which I'm pretty sure were released already. The title track rules though. 7 Days of Funk is pretty nice.

frogbs, Wednesday, 28 December 2016 18:53 (seven years ago) link

Arrington is such a fun lyricist and I love his voice so I feel like it's his record as much as Damon's. Funkzilla is fine too but just a bit lesser on my scale

Rock Wokeman (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 28 December 2016 19:10 (seven years ago) link

I dig his SoundCloud funk better than the albums and I'm not sure why. He's got a recent one up there, "I smoke music"... I mean that's the greatest title ever.

brimstead, Thursday, 28 October 2021 02:10 (two years ago) link

will check it out, everything on this comp is great but a lot of these artists have only released like two singles

vinyl version is quite a bit different, only 12 tracks but a few of the tracks show up in different versions & it's unmixed so most tracks are like a minute or two longer. "True To Yourself" is like 8 minutes longer

was able to get a copy of Invite the Light for $20. would call it a steal but it looks like most copies are similarly priced. its such a good album too, kind of like his own Songs in the Key of Life in how it stretches his sound to every corner he can take it. packaging is super cool too, ultra shiny, almost like a hologram. all three records are white with different color labels. actually kind of sucks that so many copies are out there, suggests this was a gamble that didn't work. doesn't mean you have to miss out though

frogbs, Thursday, 21 April 2022 20:18 (one year ago) link

Nice one for the collection
