"Successful" seems to be the most boring, but I haven't heard any of the last three yet.

"Successful" has some pretty pompous lyrics that make it hard for me to totally enjoy but the beat and overall vibe are kind of cool and always sound striking in the context of a radio playlist, imo easily the 2nd best song here after "Every Girl"

"I'm Goin' In" (featuring Lil Wayne)

wayne's whining in this is so remarkably unpleasant even by his own standards so i'm voting that. also the idea of drake trying to do southern rap is something i don't want to be approached with many more times. mary j probably second

iirc flair (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 23 September 2009 21:19 (fourteen years ago) link

i havent heard "i'm goin in", is it the same hook as the song from that jeezy mixtape?

"best i ever had" is one of my favorite singles this year, as much as i dislike drake as an artist. "successful" was boring as fuck, so that

k3vin k., Wednesday, 23 September 2009 21:33 (fourteen years ago) link

um it's the same song...the Jeezy mixtape has the Drake and Wayne verses on it, not just the hook.

i know i'm just a weirdo who gets mad about drums but "Forever" is so so irritating, the way the chorus suddenly shifts to those awkward hi-hat triplets that totally clash with everything else in the song...like the producer was trying to show off but totally fucked it up and wasn't willing to admit it wasn't working.

i don't listen to this song enough for it to really bother me but yeah i know what you're talking about and it's awful.

i just watched the video and i thought it was pretty funny how during his verse when the beat drops they cut to footage of young lebron playing basketball. good idea in theory but it works out being like "swimming etc..." *CUT TO LEBRON*..."NEMO!" / "went to the club and balled...." *CUT TO LEBRON*..."CHEMO!"

the only reason "Forever" can't be the answer is because drake has a kinda akonish innocuousness to his hook. it's also one of the only verses from him i can really stomach because it isn't about his sex life

there has to be much more objectable crap up there

also he does the thing where he stretches a word out at the end of the line and begings the next line kinda off-meter like five times in every single verse when it might be actually clever or unexpected if he only did it every once in a while

yeah drake is definitely less of an R&B amateur than kanye, although his stuff still seems more competent than actually engaging to me. i guess there's no way for his album to not sell well at this point, but i'm enjoying the sinking feeling that people are probably getting that he obviously doesn't have another "best i ever had" in him.

this is probably the first song of his where I haven't found him unlikable (probably because I mostly only find him unlikeable the second he stops rapping). and let's keep this in perspective, we're talking about post-heel turn kanye fucking west here (obv his heel turn was the release of 808s itself, not that silly taylor swift rant). drake needs to work way harder if he wants to catch up.

dunno, personally i find kanye's actual non-issues add up to the same zero at the end of the day. i think it's moreso drake's nominal superiority as a singer that works against him in comparison to kanye on his 808s material - on an immediate level there's a workable grain in kanye's lack of r&b finesse.

conversely this probably acts in his favour 4 those happy to luxuriate in the wan aesthetics of 'shut it down', etc.

this

i am giving you the viking of compliments (The Reverend), Thursday, 13 May 2010 16:11 (thirteen years ago) link

It wasn't unnecessary shit-talking about his ex, though. It was, if anything, an honest portrayal of the emotions one often feels after a break-up ("It's your fault," "You're a bitch and a slut," "You're never going to find anyone who will treat you as good as I did," "Fuck you, once again, you slut"), even if these emotions are emotions we're taught not to externalize, especially on pop songs. They might be asshole things to say, but if he really felt them, why shouldn't he include them in his song? I think they added to the sense that 'Ye really was hit hard, and this was the way he reacted. It was a portrait of a really brief period after a break-up before, you know, distance and insight occur (whether that ever did occur for Kanye is another matter).

samosa gibreel, Saturday, 15 May 2010 03:36 (thirteen years ago) link

mostly i just think 808s has great music -- the basis of the songs is an afterthought to me anyway because it's emotionally infantile, undercooked & full of platitudes -- again, that doesn't bother me but i see how it could turn others off -- i believe i've said this before but my view of 808s is def colored in a positive way because of how it fits into kanye's career -- it's much more interesting to me as a major pop album -- eventually it hit me on as base a musical level as possible, but there's def a different element to it that i dig

contl;drizer (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 15 May 2010 03:58 (thirteen years ago) link

tbh tho like, personally i find myself being affected by dudes off-record personas more than their on record -- like, 50 cent being a dick irl kinda made me not want to listen to his music, regardless of what he was saying on record -- i can deal with kanye's "dickishness" (even tho it comes off to me in a rather normal & non-offensive way) because i find him to be a compelling off-record persona/pop star -- i don't judge it based on "he's annoying on this record"

Fair play, R. I think it's musically really engaging for me, even if I sort of agree with J0rdan on the bit about 'Ye's songwriting. But I think it's strong on the record too, and I've explained why in the past. I just think it's a great record. I like College Dropout and Graduation better, but I like 808s more than Late Registration.

I like Drake a lot, actually, but I'm no Caramanica and Fennessey so maybe I don't know what I'm talking about. Listen to his little call-out bits in the pre-chorus; there are strong shades of Andre 3000 there, particularly on tracks like "Roses".

drop it like it's hot, Elena (HI DERE), Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:49 (thirteen years ago) link

I mean, BoB is an obvious Andre 3000-wannabe, but drawing any more specific lines between "Nothin' on You" and The Love Below is tenuous at best and I don't hear what you're talking about at all.

The song sounds like a goofier version of "Roses" (sonically, not in subject matter; there you'd have to look more at songs like "Prototype") with rhymes written by Lupe Fiasco; ergo, what I am saying is that it is drawing sonically and thematically on different parts of The Love Below filtered very strongly through songwriting sensibilities represented by Lupe Fiasco on tracks like "Superstar", all packaged together in something more harmless and radio-friendly.

It strikes me as mostly harmless, which is why I don't get the outright antipathy leveled towards it (whereas with someone like Drake I totally get why everyone here hates him, because he is offensively terrible).

Thus concludes my dazzling star turn as Cap'n Save-a-B.o.B.
