album due out on Drag City in 2010, apparently.

let us anticipate.

sleeve, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 20:13 (fourteen years ago) link

Yup. Had heard about this a while ago so can't wait to hear the results!

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 20:16 (fourteen years ago) link

Curious to hear this.

sarahel, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 20:17 (fourteen years ago) link

neat-o!

tylerw, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 20:21 (fourteen years ago) link

assuming it's ... electric?

tylerw, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 20:21 (fourteen years ago) link

way electric, check out the Myspace for a long review of their live debut.

sleeve, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 20:24 (fourteen years ago) link

The only other Corsano-related stuff that I've heard is that Vampire Can't album, which is just completely awesome, so this looks promising.
What else should I check out?

Fetchboy, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 20:32 (fourteen years ago) link

He's done a lot of projects with John Zorn, hasn't he?

sarahel, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 20:33 (fourteen years ago) link

get the flower corsano duo records. they're awesome.

wmlynch, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 20:33 (fourteen years ago) link

oh i'm psyched

xp Corsano is everywhere, i've hyped Flower-Corsano Duo before. his work with Paul Flaherty is also great.

sonderangerbot, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 20:34 (fourteen years ago) link

Heard about this a few weeks ago. Way stoked (but I also hope there will be more Freak Of Araby).

vadnais heights is cougartown (Jon Lewis), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 20:35 (fourteen years ago) link

The show I saw on that tour was pretty awesome.

sarahel, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 20:36 (fourteen years ago) link

Corsano's participation in Sunburned Hand of the Man jams elevates them to new heights.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 20:38 (fourteen years ago) link

pretty much everything and everyone he plays with moves up a level or two

love the Flaherty sessions, the Flower-Corsano albums and his last solo album is pretty damn good too

rizzx, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 20:49 (fourteen years ago) link

needless to say; i'm beyond psyched for this...please come to Hasselt soon

rizzx, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 20:49 (fourteen years ago) link

The album is complete already if my source is correct.

vadnais heights is cougartown (Jon Lewis), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 20:50 (fourteen years ago) link

xxp and still he's in so damn much. perhaps we should have a rolling Corsano thread for 2010

sonderangerbot, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 20:51 (fourteen years ago) link

That review makes it sound pretty killer -- arena rock! Quite honestly, I would not be as interested if it simply described more raga/drone/free jazz experimentation.

QuantumNoise, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 21:02 (fourteen years ago) link

definitely!

last time I Chris Corsano - with Flower, i think - I kept thinking, 'any second now he's gonna drop into some straight up heavy rock beat', but of course it never happened.

but early 80s no wave meets melodic psychedelia? who else could be described like that?

gnarly sceptre, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 23:45 (fourteen years ago) link

This is probably going to be the best band ever. The new Flower-Corsano record is great too.

jonathan - stl, Thursday, 10 December 2009 04:32 (fourteen years ago) link

Am I the only person whose primary engine of interest in this is SRB? I admit to knowing pretty much zilch about Chris Corsano...

vadnais heights is cougartown (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 10 December 2009 18:19 (fourteen years ago) link

you're not alone, no. his involvement is the real appetite whetter here, but that's quite a trio.

gnarly sceptre, Thursday, 10 December 2009 18:26 (fourteen years ago) link

(sorry for using the word 'whetter'. yeeeuch)

gnarly sceptre, Thursday, 10 December 2009 18:26 (fourteen years ago) link

Agreed w/ JL tho Chris Corsano does in fact rule.

retrovaporized nebulizer (╓abies), Thursday, 10 December 2009 18:36 (fourteen years ago) link

Can only imagine how awesome this would be w/ both the Bishop bros.

retrovaporized nebulizer (╓abies), Thursday, 10 December 2009 18:37 (fourteen years ago) link

can't you only imagine how awesome it will be as it is, or have you heard them?

mizzell, Thursday, 10 December 2009 18:39 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah I'm real curious what if anything Alan will do next as bassist/guitarist. But I'm all about how Richard is spreading his wings.

vadnais heights is cougartown (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 10 December 2009 18:41 (fourteen years ago) link

I wish! No this is gonna be totally awesome. I'm just daydreamin. xpost

retrovaporized nebulizer (╓abies), Thursday, 10 December 2009 18:41 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, this sounds like it will be fun -- Chasny and Bishop one-upping each other, with Corsano blasting behind them ...

tylerw, Thursday, 10 December 2009 18:44 (fourteen years ago) link

saw ben and the bish performing together at a ATP a few years back, they were def on a classic rock tip then

corsano = a free drummer who is young enough to have the power/stamina/dexterity of someone like rashied ali in his prime - i've seen him play w/ flaherty/moore/o'rourke, matthew bower, heather leigh murray and he always rules - don't think hes ever worked w/ zorn, tho

Ward Fowler, Thursday, 10 December 2009 21:32 (fourteen years ago) link

There is one full track and a collage thing up on the myspace now, people. Sounds pretty much like the best thing ever, as expected. Chasny and RB trading leads over Corsano's polyrhythmic scatter, other portions reminding me of 'Juggernaut' almost making me well up. So psyched. And 'Freak of Araby' was such an underrated album I feel, totally righteous in its simplicity and purity of intent, I love it. And this is a band that surely has enormous live potential: if these guys don't make it to Europe I'm going to start my own booking agency! Was a real scandal that the Araby band tour was called off due to 'lack of interest'.

myopic_void, Friday, 11 December 2009 12:24 (fourteen years ago) link

that track's pretty sweet.

m the g, Friday, 11 December 2009 13:55 (fourteen years ago) link

Wait what do you mean called off for lack of interest? I didn't know about that! They made it to NYC at least, where they fucking killed.

vadnais heights is cougartown (Jon Lewis), Friday, 11 December 2009 16:51 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, I did not go to many shows this year, but would've gone to see the Freak of Araby live show if they came through my neck of the woods ...

tylerw, Friday, 11 December 2009 17:04 (fourteen years ago) link

xp - European tour called off - US tour happened, and was quite extensive, and from what I heard, grueling.

sarahel, Friday, 11 December 2009 19:13 (fourteen years ago) link

four weeks pass...

"Excerpts in order to Tease" now up on myspace. wow wow wow. 1st one reminds me of Harry Pussy!

sleeve, Friday, 8 January 2010 00:14 (fourteen years ago) link

oops myopic said that already, my bad.

sleeve, Friday, 8 January 2010 00:16 (fourteen years ago) link

Flowers/corsano duo is coming to town with MV EE with drummer from Sunburned Hand of the Man. I love chris corsano. and I really love sun city girls/richard bishop solo. who is ben chasny?

filthy dylan, Sunday, 11 April 2010 07:40 (fourteen years ago) link

god this song on their myspace fucking rules.

Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Farting in Space (NickB), Sunday, 11 April 2010 07:59 (fourteen years ago) link

He also played guitar in Comets on Fire.

Trip Maker, Sunday, 11 April 2010 15:34 (fourteen years ago) link

Okay, now in the right mind. I can't believe I blanked on Ben Chasny. I would love to see these guys live.

filthy dylan, Sunday, 11 April 2010 16:03 (fourteen years ago) link

fucking Barden's. what a bum choice.

gnarly sceptre, Sunday, 11 April 2010 17:33 (fourteen years ago) link

this might be my record of the year so far! i haven't heard a lot of new records, I'll admit, but it is pretty awesome. They should just get together and record an album every couple of months.

tylerw, Sunday, 11 April 2010 18:17 (fourteen years ago) link

otm, let's get to work ppl.

Snop Snitchin, Sunday, 11 April 2010 20:57 (fourteen years ago) link

three weeks pass...

I want to hear this

van smack, Thursday, 6 May 2010 15:00 (thirteen years ago) link

I got the promo this week!
It's pretty damn good.
Highlight is definitely the fifteen minute mellow closer, Plain of Jars. Kind of an Ex-Cocaine vibe on that song.
I'll be looking for it on vinyl once it's out, for sure.
Definitely had me thinking of Sun City Girls, but it has its own merits, for sure.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 6 May 2010 15:04 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, got it as well and pretty much what Trip M sez.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 6 May 2010 15:20 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, i think the closer is my fave as well, though some of the more abrasive/heavier stuff is great too. they really sound like they are abusing their amps on some of these! in a good way.

tylerw, Thursday, 6 May 2010 15:21 (thirteen years ago) link

There is a healthy amount of feedback.
This has "SEE IT LIVE" written all over it, imo.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 6 May 2010 15:26 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah no doubt. press release says they have US dates booked, but there aren't any listed on Drag City's site last time i looked.

tylerw, Thursday, 6 May 2010 15:30 (thirteen years ago) link

They are playing in a hella cute wooden church in my locale in a bit less than a month and I have active expectations of it ruling

that's the band Matt Pike was in (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 6 May 2010 15:42 (thirteen years ago) link

i wanna hear this so bad

rizzx, Thursday, 6 May 2010 15:46 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm majorly pumped that this 3'o got together. They're all amazing intuitive musicians with the capability to blow minds. Corsano's work w/ Flaherty, Flaherty/Yeh, David Grubbs, Flower, Jandek, and others is mostly all unfuckwithable.

ImprovSpirit, Thursday, 6 May 2010 16:12 (thirteen years ago) link

I missed the first time they played here. Hopefully they announce a tour in the US soon.

van smack, Thursday, 6 May 2010 16:17 (thirteen years ago) link

i hope they do a euro tour too. on a sidenote, anyone heard the new album on esp corsano did with paul dunmall?

sonderangerbot, Thursday, 6 May 2010 16:21 (thirteen years ago) link

euro tour dates here: http://www.dragcity.com/artists/rangda

tylerw, Thursday, 6 May 2010 16:22 (thirteen years ago) link

What did Corsano work with Grubbs on? Just curious.

International Harvester Of Eyes (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 6 May 2010 17:50 (thirteen years ago) link

one song

jaybabcock, Thursday, 6 May 2010 18:04 (thirteen years ago) link

Well... I was really sure thay had done at least one release together, but I'm having one hell of a time finding it. My bad.

ImprovSpirit, Thursday, 6 May 2010 20:26 (thirteen years ago) link

ha, no, that's a link to a Rangda song. but i can't find anything on corsano's (immense!) discography page about it: http://www.cor-sano.com/hateddiscog.html

tylerw, Thursday, 6 May 2010 20:31 (thirteen years ago) link

(that was for rizzx)

jaybabcock, Thursday, 6 May 2010 21:37 (thirteen years ago) link

Son of a bitch! Knitting Factory Brooklyn just announced them for August 27th and I think I'm gonna be in Minnesota visiting my mom that week. God dammit!!!

Felix Frankfurter, Man Of Justice (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:16 (thirteen years ago) link

Tell your mom she needs to visit you for some fine modern music.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:19 (thirteen years ago) link

My wife will murder me if we don't go to MN that week bcuz she needs her State Fair fix. I can only hope they announce a Turf Club date that week as well...

Felix Frankfurter, Man Of Justice (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:21 (thirteen years ago) link

think they're playing the MN state fair too.

tylerw, Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:25 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh tyler why u braek hart, that is such a beautiful vision.

And at 3pm at the Miracle Of Birth Pavilion-- Zeni Geva!

tylerw, Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Just picked up the vinyl + cd today. Just how I envisioned it to be - pure heavy chaotic bliss.

Out today, huh?

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 13:23 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm guessing as a solid Six Organs fan and someone consistently getting into Sun City Girls as I come across their ridiculously OOP albums, I would be doing myself an immense disservice to not pick this up immediately?

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 13:24 (thirteen years ago) link

correct.

really sucks that Touch & Go is gone, Drag City has shitty distribution now. My local store has been trying to get this into stock for the last week or so, unsuccessfully.

bug holocaust (sleeve), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 13:38 (thirteen years ago) link

It wasn't "available" before today, though.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 18 May 2010 13:44 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, I've noticed it takes an extra week or two, sometimes, for Drag City stuff to show up on local shelves.

xp

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 13:47 (thirteen years ago) link

Although I did see the Joanna Newsom album on shelves *before* release day... so maybe their distribution model is just fucked?

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 13:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Looking forward to grabbing this gem!

ImprovSpirit, Tuesday, 18 May 2010 15:03 (thirteen years ago) link

can anyone recommend any other good jams from the dragcity store since i'm already ordering?

sonderangerbot, Tuesday, 18 May 2010 15:17 (thirteen years ago) link

the new Cave 12-inch is pretty killer

tylerw, Tuesday, 18 May 2010 15:19 (thirteen years ago) link

A few excellent releases from last year:

Om - God Is Good
Jim O'Rourke - The Visitor
Six Organs - Luminous Night

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 15:33 (thirteen years ago) link

the Helena Espvall & Masaki Batoh records are both excellent

original bgm, Tuesday, 18 May 2010 15:46 (thirteen years ago) link

Richard Bishop- The Freak Of Araby

would go nicely with the Rangda album

Felix Frankfurter, Man Of Justice (Jon Lewis), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 15:57 (thirteen years ago) link

thanks guys! think i'm going with latest six organs, looks sweet

sonderangerbot, Tuesday, 18 May 2010 16:18 (thirteen years ago) link

If it's not too late I fully recommend http://www.dragcity.com/products/empty-the-sun - Chasny in really schweeet acoustic mode (mostly [iirc]) and the novel that comes with it is kind of a blast too

she is mottled and she's looking good (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 16:30 (thirteen years ago) link

Richard Bishop- The Freak Of Araby

would go nicely with the Rangda album

Disagree. I love Rick Bishop to death... but this is, for lack of a better term, his "dinner party" album.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 16:32 (thirteen years ago) link

It wasn't "available" before today, though.

― Trip Maker,

Somehow Sonic Boom records in Seattle had both formats for sale last friday. Also picked up the new Cave 12" same day. Got 'em shipped out early I suppose. But did NOT see them at Everyday Music.

Barry Soetoro the marlboro man (van smack), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 20:33 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, I didn't mean to imply that my local store was trying to get it before release date, just that they told me yesterday that they had been unable to get any copies in yet...

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 21:02 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, this fuckin' ruled - nearest thing i cld compare it to was keith moon sitting in w/ crazy horse or something... loved how HEAVY it was

altho' i was a bit bummed out by the pretty sparse attendance, the lack of jostling and chattering really let me get deep fried in the music - and i was only woken from my reverie by david k33nan shouting "unbelievable" behind me.

Finally got this today. On 3rd listen already and fucking love it.

My very first reaction was: this is like Haino/Tatsuya's "New Rap"! (which is, naturally, a Good Thing). It is, in some ways, but it's also more than that, of course (e.g. the fine closer).

And yeah, where's the download code or whatever?! I'll have to dl this elsewhere for out and about.

Rangda is the demon queen of the leyaks in Bali, according to traditional Balinese mythology. Terrifying to behold, the child-eating Rangda leads an army of evil witches against the leader of the forces of good - Barong.

No I didn't due to a few reasons - working late, wife couldn't get the baby to sleep, no-one to go with. I did think about walking over later but by the time I was ready it was half 9 and I didn't think it was worth it. Gutted though.

There's also an old SCG track called 'My Dinner With Rangda'. And I THINK she is one of the faces shown on the back cover of Sumatran Electric Chair.

The same week I got this record I checked out a DVD from the library I work at that was a transfer from an old VHS called "Bali: Isle of Temples" and it talked about Rangda.
Also some nice footage of the monkey chant, which is even more impressive visually than it is sonically. Also has some nice folk singing about the sea and rice farming.
It's actually a beautiful film.

Having never heard any of the people involved, this has been mind-blowing (three listens today). It's not my usual bag but holy shit, this is sublime. Chris Corsano's drumming alone is worth checking this out. Then there's the dueling guitars. WOW.

Absolutely essential. Thanks everyone.

last night was refreshing. chris corsano is a very dynamic drummer live.. it's good to see something that can be just as mesmerizing when it's not so loud all the time. sir bishops guitar playing was blazing!

emeralds were perfect, they played drones for 15 minutes and progressed into a couple of 'does it look like i'm here' songs. i almost fell asleep.

jumpskins, Thursday, 9 December 2010 07:50 (thirteen years ago) link

saw them a few days ago & it deepened my appreciation of the album a lot, but the live show is the perfect article I think; they have amazing range and at moments it was just fucking serene, esp while spacing out w/ eyes fixed on corsano's head, blank except for glow in the dark ear plugs. seeing him get better&better is one of life's pleasures.

If I knew anyone that lived there I would be making them go, but seems like Madison would have at least a small Corsano cult (not sure how many radars Darin Gray is still on).

Wish I could go. I imagine it is like a sped up, vibraphone-less On Filmore or something (and I really like On Filmore).

grandavis, Friday, 3 February 2012 20:10 (twelve years ago) link

It really runs the gamut. The way Darin plays, the strings on the bass are merely ONE possible sound-making source. I was up close and you can really see how many nicks and dings are in his bass from his abuse of it. At one point he was punching it and screaming. Corsano is never less than a marvel to behold - dude is probably one of the most creative percussionists of all time. This is a perfectly matched duo - super intense, super fun (a few people laughed out loud at certain points), just incredible. Go!

Jordan, your gf will dig it. My wife digs weird music, but mostly of the Kranky / Tim Hecker / Basinski variety - not so much a free jazz buff. She was super into Chikamorachi, said it was one of the best shows she's seen in a long time (and she's seen more shows than me). Go!

So, is there a new electric Six Organs record with the Comets dudes in the band? I'll have to listen to the archival one, too.

Six Organs came through here on that trio tour, but at the last minute Ben decided to do a solo acoustic set. I was a little disappointed but the Hush Arbors songs he and Moloney sat in on were really awesome.

Man, missed the Hush Arbors set that night, AND the CD I bought from him did not play. Great dude though. Played bass in that trio format, was a good format, lots of room for Chasny to do his thing.

I am sure he woulda been bummed about it too, not something I am too concerned about (happy to give him some $$ to support the cause). I am good buddies with his friend Jason Ajemian, I am confident he is an A+ dude.

anybody seen 'em on this tour?

tylerw, Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:07 (twelve years ago) link

Saw both shows in NY. New stuff is great and they threw in a few older tracks. I wish they had more time to play together and jam out, they were definitely playing "rigid" songs/compositions. But it's always a pleasure to see them. They are headed to Black Dirty studios (there now?) to record the second LP.

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:08 (twelve years ago) link

nice, yeah, judging from the live recordings I've heard, they aren't all that improv-y, considering their respective improv-y backgrounds. no biggie though, they sound magnificent.

tylerw, Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:14 (twelve years ago) link

Black Dirt, not Black Dirty obvs.

Both shows were p. underattended with moderately disinterested audiences (first show I heard someone say "I feel like they could do this in their sleep") which was a real shocker to me since this group definitely falls under "What's NOT to love?!"

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:18 (twelve years ago) link

tylerw, Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:57 (twelve years ago) link

Fuck, wish they had come to my neck of the woods. Can't understand what could be boring about seeing great players playing great.

grandavis, Thursday, 8 March 2012 21:04 (twelve years ago) link

Hah, Chasny playing a white strat in that video clip. Cool!

grandavis, Thursday, 8 March 2012 21:05 (twelve years ago) link

Wow, just wanna follow up and say that that video is awesome! Love the solo and the anthemic closing part of the song. Want to see these guys, hope more dates follow the record (silly for them not to I imagine, but these guys all have so many things going on).

grandavis, Thursday, 8 March 2012 21:27 (twelve years ago) link

yeah considering how side project happy these dudes all are, it wouldn't be surprising if rangda was a one-off, but i'm glad as hell it isn't!

tylerw, Thursday, 8 March 2012 21:31 (twelve years ago) link

It was awesome to see Chasny playing like that. The next Six Organs has Comets on Fire as the backing band and is already recorded - cannot WAIT for that.

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Thursday, 8 March 2012 21:44 (twelve years ago) link

I am glad it isn't as well. But I could see them NOT touring for the record, just cause they do other stuff. These shows may be it for a while, but hopefully not.

I guess I am psyched for Comets guys on the next record, but I do not want anything that sounds like Howlin Rain. Will trust that it will just sound like rocking Six Organs, which I am ALL for. Especially if there is a tour for it. Last few times I have seen Chasny it has been solo or with Elisa, which were great shows, but it has been a long time since I have seen him with a band.

four months pass...

Okay, we have word...

For the second flight of the shadowy witch-god brothers, Rangda have changed their status from False Flag to Formerly Extinct! Since the last album, Rangda, the trio consisting of Sir Richard Bishop, Ben Chasney, and Chris Corsano, has been all around this world as the wise men and the fools alike, in lands both high and low. They’ve seen the young and invest-less kneel amp-side, waiting for musical succor, then in the next town over they’ve felt the cold chill of being left for dead and seen their music dubbed ‘so wrong it must be Rangda’ strictly for some local pen-lifter’s personal chuckles.

These songs, newfangled and shrouded by ancestral awakenings, bore deep into the layers of consciousness to divine meeting. Take “Manjun,” for instance. Everybody always talks about Layla, but when does anyone ever pull Majnun out the hat? Enter Rangda with sympathy for the obsessed. To them, the Persian wanna-be lover of classical lit and lore is worth more consideration than George Harrison’s ex-wife! That's the way the Rangda madness lies. There’s no value among the flies of the marketplace – unless you find a copy of Rangda’s latest there. Formerly Extinct lives large, no matter how small the arch overhead, and is available for your decent into lunacy on September 18th via Drag City.

FORMERLY EXTINCT TRACKLISTING:
1. Idol’s Eye
2. The Vault
3. Silver Nile
4. Plugged Nickel
5. Manjun
6. Goodbye Mr. Gentry
7. Tres Hambres
8. Night Porter

me: rangda...yknow, they're one of those hard-to-categorize supergroup type groups and i don't want to search all over so...
clerk: what?
me: rangda r-a-n-g-d-a. i think it's an indonesian demon or something?
clerk: rangada?
me: r-a-n
clerk: r-a-n
me: g-d-a
clerk: ok

RANGDA
maybe i have ordered it, but all bets are off until next tues.

Crackle Box, Thursday, 13 September 2012 14:45 (eleven years ago) link

lol okay i just had a similar conversation to LL's just now. called my local shop to see if they got it in and ask them to hold a copy for me.

me: "Yeah, I just wanted to see if you got the new Rangda album in?"
sleepy sounding dude: "Uh, who was that?"
me: "Rangda. R-A-N-G-D-A."
ssd: *types away* "Hmm, nothing coming up for that in the system. How was that spelled again?"
me: "R-A-N-G-D-A"
ssd: "Nope, nothing, not even an entry for other albums by them."
me: "That's weird, I know I bought their first album from you guys."
ssd: "What's the name of the album?"
me: "Formerly Extinct."
ssd: "Oh yeah, here it is. We've got a couple copies. It's actually spelled R-A-N-G-D-A."
me: *slaps forehead* "Okay, cool, thanks."

fwiw, dude was super friendly and helpful, was just a funny exchange and made me think of LL's post.

the last Rangda show that guy recorded sounds really really good

the 'major tom guy' (sleeve), Tuesday, 8 March 2016 19:48 (eight years ago) link

i liked the first album but they honestly don't do too much for me :/

not sure what the deal is, they seem like something i'd like

global tetrahedron, Tuesday, 8 March 2016 19:59 (eight years ago) link

has anyone heard alan bishop's new thing (with various master musicians of bukkake), Koes Barat?

Sunday in Minneapolis, I can't fucking wait!

chr1sb3singer, Friday, 11 March 2016 19:23 (eight years ago) link

tonight i will see the rangda!

La Lechuza (La Lechera), Friday, 11 March 2016 19:28 (eight years ago) link

i'm going to see this movie called Embrace of the Serpent tonight, which at least sounds like it could also be the title of a 25-minute Rangda blowout.

tylerw, Friday, 11 March 2016 19:42 (eight years ago) link

I saw them and it was fantastic

chr1sb3singer, Monday, 14 March 2016 16:24 (eight years ago) link

Same
They sounded just like I thought they would and I enjoyed it

La Lechuza (La Lechera), Monday, 14 March 2016 16:48 (eight years ago) link

this record comes together for me more than the others but i'm not really sure why yet

adam, Monday, 14 March 2016 16:57 (eight years ago) link

bishop's playing reminds me of bob drake in bits of this.

still don't think they've delivered on the promise of the first album, this record feels a bit enervated and rote

ogmor, Saturday, 19 March 2016 14:17 (eight years ago) link

I dunno, I like this new one as much as the first one. There's a lot more of the 'surf raga' / Torch Of The Mystics-type stuff happening on this one. I thought the second album was just ok, but this one got me back on the horse

Of course, none of the albums compare to seeing them live

Wimmels, Saturday, 19 March 2016 15:19 (eight years ago) link

they were excellent when I saw them, seemed to be having a really good time, chasny detuning himself mid solo, and they definitely sounded better than on record, but yeah, I don't really like SCG, I want more extremes

ogmor, Saturday, 19 March 2016 15:24 (eight years ago) link

fuck, they were here last night and i missed them

flappy bird, Saturday, 19 March 2016 16:17 (eight years ago) link

I don't really like SCG, I want more extremes

having a hard time parsing this w/r/t a band that made a career out of extremes, check out Dawn Of The Devi or Djinn Funnel or Bright Surroundings if u want dense Rangda type sound

the 'major tom guy' (sleeve), Saturday, 19 March 2016 17:13 (eight years ago) link

I meant wrt rangda, miss the intensity of the first one

ogmor, Sunday, 20 March 2016 00:20 (eight years ago) link

ah, gotcha, and I agree. Have not heard this new one but was not very enthused by the 2nd.

― adam, Monday, March 14, 2016 9:57 AM (six months ago)

yeah I finally got Heretic's Bargain on LP and it is fantastic, but it's hard for me to articulate just what it is that made the previous one more disappointing - no wild parts? out of all the long epics I like "Hermetic Museum" the most, lots of variation and texture.

sleeve, Friday, 16 September 2016 00:27 (seven years ago) link

has anyone heard the live 10"? are the versions different enough that it's worth getting?

sleeve, Friday, 16 September 2016 00:28 (seven years ago) link

Man I haven't even heard the actual release/album yet, need to get on that.

grandavis, Friday, 16 September 2016 13:32 (seven years ago) link

I know, I felt like I was totally late to it as well! A lot more surf guitar bouncy action and there's a pretty awesome 8-minute freakout with a long fadeout ending ("Hard Times Befall The Door-To-Door Glass Shard Salesman")

sleeve, Friday, 16 September 2016 13:57 (seven years ago) link

yeah, it's good! especially love the long closer.
was just listening to david grubbs' new one and there are actually some pretty rangda-y moments on the tracks with drummer eli keszler

tylerw, Friday, 16 September 2016 14:10 (seven years ago) link

I haven't checked in on a Grubbs thing in forrrever. Mirror Repair remains one of my favorite records of the 90s.

I wish you could see my home. It's... it's so... exciting (Jon not Jon), Friday, 16 September 2016 14:17 (seven years ago) link

yeah, me neither -- this one is almost all instrumental, which is a plus in my book when it comes to his stuff. i like it!
