Let's start this shit already!

I'll start it off with my first comp, a 76 minute "Best-Of" Ween compilation. I basically put up a bunch of rad tracks, moved them around a bit and added and subtracted in certain areas and this comp flows very well IMO.

Unfortunately the Spotify playlist is a bit "special" because not all of the tracks were up there so I replaced some of them with THE STALLION volumes.

DISK ONE
DISK TWO

This two disk anthology attempts to capture a certain essence of the band; perhaps it is a melancholy happiness, an anxious glee - the bipolar pulse and rhythm of the band. I hope I achieved this vague and pretentious goal.

Just some quick notes as I won't be on the computer to retort against any possible tirades of any people I've pissed off:

I gave the band as much as an all encompassing collection of hits double record without
straying too far beyond what it means to be a "greatest hits" compilation in the first place - the thing one buys when they're first delving into a band, or too impatient to allow songs they're unfamiliar with possibly come to grow on them. They want what they want - they want"the best". So of course I had my own taste instilled in here, but lots of consulting with last.fm charts and general message-board chatter to make sure I wasn't going to leave anyone outraged after I posted this. Which I surely have - notice the lack of Conway (I thought I was gracious to include even one: just a sort of comparison track to what the band ultimately started as. But ultimately, MBV with Butcher is the REAL MBV).

The two unreleased tracks were put in there as sort of a "marketing bonus" for "buying this album"
if they already owned half the songs anyway. Also, they're my favorites of the unreleased stuff and I needed a pause in the quisssential Loveless, as I didn't want to make it seem like I should've just put every song from the album instead on there (it's sentences like these that validate how damn good the entirety of Loveless is). I'm dying to re-edit this and include What You Want in there, as in many a way it's just a song that epitomizes what MBV is about (the innocenct humming of flute vs the assaulting scratch of guitar) but at that point I'd have included over half of Loveless on a Greatest Hits album. Despite my previous remark that this gives the people (pun in 3..2..1) "What You Want", I more want to encourage the listener to dive further into MBV's discography than be provided with every possible thing they ever need right here. That way, with more purchases = more funds for Shields to produce that one or two new albums. Also, Only Shallow accomplishes the whole rivalry of sound a little more uniquely with what, and remains even today, one of the most foreign manipulations of guitar into what is seemingly the cries of an elephant on its death-throes, soothed again and again with Bilinda's tranquilizing vocals.

Another thing I tried to consider is just flow of the album. The bummer is that with most greatest hits compilations, people tend to skip around and just choose the songs they enjoy immediately without giving the others ones a try - hence the fact that they bought a greatest hits compilation in the first place. Conscious of that, I considered completely randomizing the playlist... but I more wanted to encouragethe newbie into discovering how much MBV has changed by systematic default. Their appreciation of the bandI think would increase ten-fold by doing so versus pairing songs like "You Made Me Realise" and "To Here Knows When" with eachother, track to track - sort of bizarre, and completely disorientating for the listener who can't figure out who the hell this band is and whether it's the same one or not. What I find is that the compilation progresses from a messy static of MBV's original inception to the dreamy, ethereal haze of what they eventually came to be. Also, I would like to note that at near age 50, Bilinda Butcher I would bed any day over the likes of Jessica Alba; and Kevin Shields is clearly God.

Also, we don't have Spotify here in the States so if our puppet nation would kindly yield to good old text-based on ilXor-for-ilXors (by the people, for the people: America roolz!!!) postings that would be nice.

I started off trying to not to put anything that's already been on a compilation, but in the end restricted it even further to the post Some Girls albums since they are the most overlooked period.

And Plundered My Soul is as much a 2010 song as an Exile outtake.

Ride
Beyond Woodstock

spotify

Black Nite Crash (single from Tarantula); Like A Daydream (debut single); Twisterella (single from Going Blank Again); Slave (b-side of 'Black Nite Crash'); Here And Now (Fall EP and US version of Nowhere); Decay (Nowhere); Time Of Her Time (Going Blank Again); Don’t Let It Die (b-side of 'Birdman'); From Time To Time (Carnival of Light); Unfamiliar (Today Forever EP); Moonlight Medicine (Carnival of Light); Time Machine (Going Blank Again); Rolling Thunder (Carnival of Light); Leave Them All Behind (single from Going Blank Again); Dreams Burn Down (Fall EP and Nowhere); Grasshopper (b-side of 'Leave Them All Behind')

sleeve note

It's funny how you live with these records, then you live without them - and then you meet up again years later and they've changed, or you've changed. The old feelings are still there, but you don't quite love them in the same way.

The first records are still lovely, but now they're all thin, like children dressed up in suits. Going Blank Again used to be a slightly failed attempt at pop, but it's blossoming into a surprisingly experimental take on same. Carnival Of Light was always lush, but now it's matured (or you've matured) it's not boring any more. Even Tarantula isn't the steaming mess it once was.

I had terrific fun putting this together. I ditched chronology and went for flow. We start at the end and move back through the tunes version of the band. They always had strong songs. But that was only part of it, they stretched and explored, and we get a bit wider and more epic as we go on.

They were always some curious version of the Stooges' kid brothers at heart, though, and that's where we start and finish. Beyond Woodstock closes on 'Grasshopper', still their finest garage moment, all eleven minutes of it. Wordless and not an ounce of fat on it, an epic you could fit in your pocket. They began with a squall and ended with a crunch, and I love them for it.

That's a bold move opening the Ride comp. with a song from their final, terrible album. But what a great song it is!

Sorry, no Spotify. :( The first disc is a chronological, one-song-from-each-album, "greatest hits" set, with "hit" generally implying that the song has been talked about more than others or that a lot of people seem to like it. The songs on disc two are more pensive and/or dark, and tend to be my personal favorites. Not in chrono order.

Magic Dirt
These Singing Lessons Are Really Starting To Fuck Me Over
An Hour of Dirt
[I'm in the US, so no Spotify, but can supply a link if need be]

Ice (3:21) - Life Was Better EP (1994)
We've got another Sonic Youth on our hands, think gullible record labels. Other versions have better sound, but lack exploding effects box ending.
My Pal (3:54) - Idiot Box (1996)
For this cover (original by Aussie band God) Magic Dirt secure entrance to heaven, no matter what one may think of the rest of their songs
I Was Cruel (6:56) - Friends In Danger (1996)
The EP version is rawer and generally better, but loses the climactic scream, hence not as good
Sparrow (3:41) - Recovery! Hits From The Back Door (1997)
The "single" from Friends of Danger, one of the best cut-outs in the history of cut-outs. Presented here in a non-album version just because
Rabbit With Fangs (2:41) - Young and Full Of The Devil (1998)
Had to pick something from this generally weak album where we take ourselves a little too seriously (and for this band, that's saying something)
Dirty Jeans (3:41) - What Are Rock Stars Doing Today (2000)
Probably would have been better if someone had written a few more lyrics, but it's still the breakthrough pop single
Supernova (2:37) - Dirty Jeans EP (Liz Phair Cover) (2000)
Not great, exactly, but handy to have for mixtapes
All My Crushes (3:55) - Tough Love (2003)
"Every jumper I fold fills with your torso" is possibly the worst lyric ever written, but the guitars still rule
Love Me (6:01) - Plastic Loveless Letter Single (2003)
Magic Dirt buy a copy of "Some Girls" or something
Isotope (2:47) - What Are Rock Stars Doing Today (2004 Bonus Disc Version)
This shorter version is way better than the long one
Takin It All Wrong (4:47) - What Are Rock Stars Doing Today (2004 Bonus Disc Version)
I shelled out like $35.00 for the UK version of "Rock Stars" which is an album I don't even like that much, but it's true that the bonus disc is gold
Johnny Loves Sarah (4:27) - I Love The Rain Single (2005)
Meh sell-out single redeemed by killer b-side
Dyin' (4:16) - Snow White (2005)
Band still can't decide whether to rock out or sell out, but this hits a nice balance
Bring Me The Head Of... (3:24) - Beast (2007)
To hell with selling out. We wanna rawk
White Boy (5:25) - Girl (2008)
Yup, that's it. Loud guitars and yelling. Took us long enough to figure out what we're good at

In contrast to my Al Green comp, my Kinks kollektion (that will be the only one, I promise)is very much a sort of updating of the major canonical compilation. I've followed John Mendelssohn's lead in omitting the huge singles aside from the undeniable Lola. The discs are very broadly divided between love songs (disc 1) and songs of social observation (disc 2), though there are songs that could fit in either or neither category on both discs. Again, the sequencing is dictated largely by what sounds good to my ear.

Time Will Tell: An Incomplete History of the Kinks, English Rock Combo, 1964-1996, in Two Volumes.

Disc 1
1. She`s Got Everything [Kinks Kronikles]
2. Lola [Lola Versus Powerman And The Money Go Round]
3. Sweet Lady Genevieve [Preservation Act 1 ]
4. Heart of Gold [State of Confusion]
5. Mr. Shoemaker's Daughter [Kinks Kronikles]
6. Fancy [Face To Face]
7. Wicked Annabella [The Village Green Preservation]
8. Holloway Jail [Muswell Hillbillies]
9. Moments [Soundtrack from the film Percy]
10. Holiday Romance [A Soap Opera]
11. Where Have All the Good Times Gone [Kink Kontroversy]
12. Susannah's Still Alive [Kinks Kronikles]
13. See My Friends [The Ultimate Collection]
14. The Way Love Used To Be [Soundtrack from the film Percy]
15. This Time Tomorrow [Lola Versus Powerman And The Money Go Round]
16. No more looking back [Schoolboys in disgrace]
17. Animal [To the Bone]
18. Scattered (Phobia)
19. Better Things [Give the People What They Want]
20. On the Outside [Sleepwalker Bonus Track]
21. Days [Kinks Kronikles]

Disc 2
1. Milk Cow Blues [Kink Kontroversy]
2. Last Of The Steam-Powered Trains [The Village Green Preservation]
3. Big Black Smoke [Kinks Kronikles]
4. I'm Not Like Everybody Else [The Ultimate Collection]
5. Time Will Tell [no official release]
6. Dead End Street [Kinks Kronikles]
7. Death Of A Clown [Something Else By The Kinks]
8. Father Christmas [Misfits Bonus Track]
9. The Million-Pound-Semi-Detached [Waterloo Sunset: The Songs of Ray Davies]
10. Shangri La [Arthur, Or The Decline And Fall Of The British Empire]
11. Autumn Almanac [Kinks Kronikles]
12. The video shop [Think visual]
13. Loony balloon [UK Jive]
14. Oklahoma USA [Muswell Hillbillies]
15. Full Moon [Sleepwalker]
16. Waterloo Sunset [Something Else By The Kinks]
17. Summer's Gone (Extended Edit) [Word of Mouth Bonus Track]
18. Moving Pictures [Low Budget]
19. This Is Where I Belong [Kinks Kronikles]

It should have all been so different. In '93 DJ Subroc, producer for KMD gets hit by a car and dies. Elektra drop KMD and refuse to release one of the greatest hip-hop albums of the nineties while Zev Lov X - Subroc's brother - is in mourning because of the very controversial cover. Zev disappears, rumours circulate of him getting a drinking problem and becoming homeless. God knows what happened to the other MC in the group, Onyx the Birthstone Kid.

But Bobbito, the blessed Bobbito, noticed his absence. He tracked him down, hearing of someone performing with ladies tights over his head at open mics to cover the wounds the record industry had given him, or so he says. He gave him a place to crash, supposedly, and free creative control, as long as he got focussed again, on his small imprint Fondle 'Em. And then bam! Three singles, out of nowhere, enough money for some booze and a Russell Crowe replica Gladiator mask and Daniel Dumile is back with a vengeance. Making his own beats with samples recorded off the radio, or so the legend says, only half remembering what Subroc taught him lending itself to some very strange sounds unlike anything else out there. Rhymes in the third person because of a lost identity leading to alter egos out the wazoo. Confusion rains supreme, a supervillain wouldn't have it any other way.

After a prolific couple of years releasing countless albums in numerous personas with different collaboraters, DOOM was finally recognised as one of the best. I even read an article in HHC (r.i.p.) where Kanye spends the whole time waxing lyrical about how he wished he had the guy's talent. Black Bastards finally got a release. Madvillainy and Fishscale was a huge critical success and he was even sponsered by a tv station for an album. He defeated the system that once tore him apart. So it's unsurprising that he has gone back into the shadows, waiting for a cause to take up once again - only releasing Born Like This in the past couple years. It's a terrific record, they all are bar Viktor Vaughn II, but it is obvious the supervillain needs a hero to destroy once again.

It Begins With A Blessing, It Ends With A Curse - A Kevin Ayers Retrospective.

Disc 2: Island, Halsall and Beyond.

1. See You Later
2. Didn't Feel Lonely 'Til I Thought Of You
3. Everybody's Sometime And Some People's All The Time Blues
4. The Confessions Of Doctor Dream: Irreversible Neural Damage
5. The Confessions Of Doctor Dream: Invitation
6. Observations
7. Diminished But Not Finished
8. Farewell Again (Another Dawn)
9. Star
10. Yes I Do

Although they're chronologically ordered, I've sequenced the tracks into some semblance of a logical flow; difficult for such an eclectic artist, but I thought it would be interesting to even out the track-to-track stylistic bumps and jolts that characterise most of his albums.

I <3 MAGMA

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a359/Stormvogel/PeuterMagma.jpg

disc 1
1. Mekanïk Destruktïw Kommandöh [Mekanïk Kommandöh; 1972] — 38:46
2. Hhaï [Live/Hhaï; 1975] - 9:20
3. Köhntark (Part One) [Live/Hhai; 1975] — 15:45
4. Köhntark (Part Two) [Live/Hhai; 1975] — 16:14

disc 2
1. De Futura [Üdü Wüdü; 1976] — 18:00
2. Theusz Hamtaahk [Retrospektiw I-II; 1981] — 36:05
3. Offering - Offering, pt. 1/Earth [Offering I-II; 1986] - 18:26
4. Offering - Cosmos [A Fïïèh; 1993] - 5:20

Notes: The version of MDK here is from the 1972 Mekanik Kommandoh LP, which is mroe stripped down than the 1973 version (I like it better). Sucked that I couldn't include anything off Wurdah Itah or Attahk (I blame "De Futura", which made it on general popularity, not because I think it's "core" Magma). I also put on three Offering tracks (the first two segue into each other), as they really do carry on the zeuhl story in a new way, and contain some of the prettiest music Vander wrote.

I dont see why not. I'm surprised you've never heard them tbh. Youtube them first?

the 1st discs are rawer than the 2nd ones as you would expect. Redd Kross moved from punk to bubblegum pop.
screaming trees moved from more psychedelic rock to a slightly harder rocking sound.

Mine probably won't get finished until Monday or so, but I can tell you it is shaping up very nicely. Spotify is likely a no-go for most of this stuff, but I will have a look and see how much I can put together. If there's at least some I'll make a playlist out of those and anyone who likes it can go seek out the rest themselves.

Funnily enough, the only one of these that I know enough to judge from the tracklist alone is the Momus one, and it's pretty awesome. Will have a listen to others later.

I recreated the MBV and Beatles sets... only ones I already had all the songs for already. Also spent most my emusic credits on Momus tracks. He totally unfamiliar to me but I liked what I heard when I sampled a few tracks. But haven't given it proper listen yet. Nas and MF Doom will be next... I'm about halfway there for each of them.

Question for Viceroy: If we post a 2 disc comp, can we just post one long list or do we have to break it up into 2 80-minute lists? The reason I ask is that I can't easily fit the songs on 2 CDs in the order I have them (ie, chronological). Do I have to rearrange them or it is ok to just post the whole thing as one list? I probably should have asked in the original thread but I notice everyone's posting CD1 and CD2 separately.

here goes

Simon (I think) got to Super Furry Animals before me (looking forward to seeing his selection), but this guy was my first musical itch and doesn't get much of a mention on radio or ILM, so I'm going to stand up for Elvis. These two disc length compilations are pretty much where I am with him these days, I hope that if anyone else listens to them they find something they know and love as well as something that surprises them.

[If anything just listen to the vocals at 1.40 after the second guitar solo in 'Hound dog' (the studio version - on vol. II): is he out of breath or has he gyrated slightly too far from the microphone when he sings "they said you was high class, well that was just a lie"? I still think it's a breath thing 30 years after first hearing it, but it's still to this day the closest corroboration in my head to seeing something in 3D.

Elvis is a brilliant idea. Someone was talking about Jacques Brel and Scott Walker on the nominations thread - elvis is kind of that: long career, fragmented catalogue, no idea where to start. This whole exercise is made for that sort of artist imo.

II): is he out of breath or has he gyrated slightly too far from the microphone when he sings "they said you was high class, well that was just a lie"? I still think it's a breath thing 30 years after first hearing it, but it's still to this day the closest corroboration in my head to seeing something in 3D.

I'll toss in Lemonsoul (with Elbow's Guy Garvey) too. To be honest, I don't know timings for those bonus tracks; might need to drop one or both to fit on a single CD.

I’m Gonna Lose My Way and You’ll Lose Yours: The Jefferson Airplane 1965-1974

1. “Free Advice,” Great Society (7-inch, 1966)
2. “Runnin’ ‘Round This World,” Jefferson Airplane (7-inch, 1966)
3. “Blues from an Airplane,” Jefferson Airplane (Jefferson Airplane Takes Off, 1966)
4. “Come Up the Years,” Jefferson Airplane (Jefferson Airplane Takes Off, 1966)
5. “J.P.P. McStep B. Blues,” Jefferson Airplane (Early Flight, 1966)
6. “Today,” Jefferson Airplane (Surrealistic Pillow, 1967)
7. “Embryonic Journey,” Jefferson Airplane (Surrealistic Pillow, 1967)
8. “The Ballad of You & Me & Pooneil,” Jefferson Airplane (After Bathing at Baxter’s, 1967)
9. “Won’t You Try,” Jefferson Airplane (After Bathing at Baxter’s, 1967)
10. “Saturday Afternoon,” Jefferson Airplane (After Bathing at Baxter’s, 1967)
11. “Martha,” Jefferson Airplane (7-inch, 1967)
12. “The House at Pooneil Corners,” Jefferson Airplane (Crown of Creation, 1968)
13. “The Other Side of This Life,” Jefferson Airplane (Bless Its Pointed Little Head, 1969)
14. “It’s No Secret,” Jefferson Airplane (Bless Its Pointed Little Head, 1969)
15. “We Can Be Together,” Jefferson Airplane (Volunteers, 1969)
16. “Mexico,” Jefferson Airplane (7-inch, 1970)
17. “Thunk,” Jefferson Airplane (Bark, 1971)
18. “When I Was a Boy I Watched the Wolves,” Paul Kanter & Grace Slick (Sunfighter, 1971)
19. “Sea Child,” Hot Tuna (Burgers, 1972)
20. “Alexander the Medium,” Jefferson Airplane (Long John Silver, 1972)
21. “Genesis,” Jorma Kaukonen (Quah, 1974)

This times out at just under 80 minutes. It’s the entirety of the Jefferson Airplane folder I keep on my hard drive, minus “Don’t Slip Away” from Takes Off (a reluctant omission) and “Third Week in the Chelsea” from Bark (a good song left off somewhat less reluctantly).

I’m not trying to be provocative or make some lame point by omitting “White Rabbit” and “Somebody to Love.” They’re both fantastic. The problem is that they’ve been played to death--on radio, in movies, in commercials. Classic-rock radio decided long ago that these are the only two songs that the Jefferson Airplane ever recorded. In forty years of listening to the radio, the only other thing I’ve ever heard by them is “Embryonic Journey,” exactly once. As someone who loves so much of what they did, this is very frustrating.

“Miracles” is great too, but I’d have to leave something off to make room for it, and it would also open the door to a different time. I like keeping the time frame at 1965 to 1974, from LBJ’s highwater mark to Nixon’s resignation. The cover art was a struggle. Great image, ugly text.

(I found some of the nudge-nudge, wink-wink instructions on the previous thread a little confusing. So: nudge-nudge, wink-wink, if you are interested in a physical copy of this, click on my name and follow the money.)

I make no secret that I consider OC to be the greatest band in the world right now. I love every song here.

Gone for the epics there I see

gone for the best stuff! Compilations w/bands like Magma are weird, because any of their best work does the job of demonstrating what is great about Magma. Yet, two discs of their best stuff seems both redundant and woefully inadequate. see also: Stereolab, Free Design, Can, Cardiacs

if you order now, the bonus disc is:

1. "La" Dawotsin
2. Mekanik Machine
3. The Last Seven Minutes
4. Spiritual
5. the entirety of Wurdah Itah
6. Soleil d'Ork

I might have to make that Beatles Greatest Hits album Ismael Klata. I've never really listened to every Beatles song. I would play my parents old vinyl records a long time ago. I don't remember much besides the regular hits. Also I should give The Byrds a whirl. I'll have to make that EP of yours. I'm not familiar with much of The Byrds to be honest.

My second mix is on hold until I listen to an assload of music over and over. I have around 275 songs to choose from but I'm enjoying being choosy with them

2. On Our Last Day Together (by the Arcadians) (Mad Mad World: 1985)
3. The Orchard (Appointment with Venus: 1986)

5. You Mary You (él single, 1987)
6. Smash Hit Wonder (Ivory Tower: 1987)
7. Endless September (Yuri Gagarin: 1989)
8. Telephone Box (Edward Barton cover)(Edward Not Edward compilation: 1989)
9. The Metempsychosis Song (Rainfall: 1991)
10. I Just Wasn't Made for These Times (Beach Boys cover) (Rainfall: 1991)
11. Vicky Page (Jean Renoir: 1992)
12. Lazy English Sun (Sunshine: 1994)
13. Wichi-Tai-To (Jim Pepper cover)(Delta Kiss: 1994)
14. She Means Everything to Me (Jackie Girl: 1996)
15. You'll Never Catch the Sun (Azure: 1998)
16. Fires Rise and Die (9th & 13th: 2002)
17. I Knew It All Along (The Wonder of It All: 2004)
18. Lights Were Dancing on the Ceiling (An Unknown Spring: 2007)
19. An Unknown Spring (An Unknown Spring: 2007)
20. Lazy Thunderstorms (Blueboy cover)(Country Music: Songs for Keith Girdler compilation: 2008)
21. You're Welcome (Beach Boys cover) (4-08-2008)

It's strictly chronological because I couldn't be bothered to sequence it any other way.

I considered doing a second disc of other artists' tracks that Louis Philippe either wrote or produced, but it's just too daunting a task for me at the moment. Seek out the Siesta Records compilations Algebra Spaghetti and Simultaneous Ice Cream (both of which he produced) if you're into '90s revivalist sunshine pop.

fyi:

  • The Border Boys track also appears on the compilation Crépuscule for Café Après-midi 2, and the Arcadians' only album was reissued as Let's Pretend in the '90s. they're the same band by two different names.
  • "Telephone Box" also appears on the best-of collection Claret.
  • An earlier version of "Fires Rise and Die" appears on the album Appointment With Venus, but it's not as good because it has an awkward trumpet solo in the middle, and it doesn't have Louis's daughter reciting a passage from a French translation of a Jonathan Coe novel, hard-panned from left to right and back again until the fadeout (no really, this is a good thing).
an earlier version of "Lazy English Sun" appears on the album Jean Renoir, but it suffers from a lack of synthesized harpsichord and a wack drum machine beat.

"You're Welcome" (possibly from a radio session?) seems to only exist on slsk. I think I hear Louis amidst the harmonies, but maybe that's just confirmation bias. It could be the fuckin Wondermints for all I know.

:)

The Pearl Jam really is excellent, thanks. The more I hear them the more I think they are/were one of the great bands. Great drumming too, were they known for that?

Not really. And it's actually three different dudes--a guy named Matt Chamberlain for the Ten-era stuff, then Dave Abbruzzese
for Vs. and Vitalogy, and he was replaced by Jack Irons from some incarnation of the Red Hot Chili Peppers for No Code. Then Soundgarden's Matt Cameron took over, and he's still with them. The rest of the original Pearl Jam line-up has always been the same.

More importantly, I'm stoked that you enjoyed the compilation!

So far, I am really impressed with the amount of work and the level of care that has gone into these. Hopefully I will get around to actually assembling/downloading/listening to some of the playlists over the weekend, & also posting my own Stereolab & Luna comps, which will likely happen on Monday at this point.

2. “The Atlantic,” Shoes (Bazooka, 1976)
3. “Like I Told You,” Shoes (Bazooka, 1976)
4. “Boys Don’t Lie,” Shoes (Black Vinyl Shoes, 1977)
5. “Do You Wanna Get Lucky,” Shoes (Black Vinyl Shoes, 1977)
6. “Not Me,” Shoes (Black Vinyl Shoes, 1977)
7. “Capital Gain,” Shoes (Black Vinyl Shoes, 1977)
8. “Nowhere So Fast,” Shoes (Black Vinyl Shoes, 1977)
9. “Tomorrow Night,” Shoes (Present Tense, 1979)
10. “Too Late,” Shoes (Present Tense, 1979)
11. “Now and Then,” Shoes (Present Tense, 1979)
12. “Yes or No,” Shoes (Tongue Twister, 1981)
13. “Curiosity,” Shoes (Boomerang, 1982)
14. “Running Wild,” Shoes (Silhouette, 1984)

16. “Love Does,” Shoes (Stolen Wishes, 1989)
17. “I Can’t Go Wrong,” Shoes (Stolen Wishes, 1989)
18. “Never Ending,” Shoes (Propeller, 1994)
19. “It Happens All the Time,” Jeff Murphy (Cantilever, 1997)

Not for everyone; for me, a kind of singular and, except for their first couple of LPs, anachronistic genius within shouting distance of Phil Spector and Brian Wilson. (Calling on Thus Sang Freud for some back-up.)

The total time is about 60 minutes, not 80; like the old Pye compilations, Golden Hour of the Shoes. I’m sure I could push it to 80, but I’d have to take out some vinyl and start combing over the early-’80s albums, and I’m far too lazy. I’ll stick with the songs I used to put on mix-tapes. My familiarity with the later LPs and Jeff Murphy’s solo record is much newer, so I’m more confident of those picks. Many people make do with Black Vinyl Shoes. I think you’re missing a lot if you stop there.

(Same offer as with the Jefferson Airplane compilation above: click on my handle and take it from there.)

16. Sweet Love (Nightshift) (from D.O.B.)

Some good watching in there! I made this for a friend recently, leaving off some of his big hits (for taste), and just added "Unknown Number," which I guess breaks the no-consecutive-songs-from-the-same-album rule, but I think it works. "Sweet Love" and "One More Night" link the same video, which combines those songs in a video that brings me back to my year as a security guard in New Orleans.

Two things that baffle me about this thread:

2. whatever thinks Elvis "doesn't get much of a mention on radio (wha???) or ILM (wha????)."

No Spotify here in Canadaland either, but where possible I've linked to all kinds of YouTubes goodness. No real rationale, other than that the songs sound awesome in this order. To me, Low are a domestic apocalypse, the sound of things disintegrating on a tiny personal level, as if your toaster started crying inconsolably one sun-drenched morning and didn't know how to stop. Oh, and I also wanted to showcase their ability to cover other artists in ways that might surprise casual listeners, so spot the Neil Young, Journey, Beatles, Smiths and Bee Gees songs, etc.

I hope I haven’t committed some major breach of etiquette by posting for the third time. I double-checked the other thread just to make sure no one had the same idea.

I’ve made this compilation for at least six friends, and used it as a fundraising giveaway on my radio show a few years ago. It’s heavy on Goodfellas and Mean Streets, of course, but most every film up to Bringing Out the Dead is represented. I just realized now, when checking some dates, that there’s a glitch; “Like a Rolling Stone” from Life Lessons is actually the Before the Flood version with the Band. That would mess up the timing, though, so I’ll leave things as is. The excerpts are little snippets of dialogue I scatter throughout: “Go fuck your mother,” “Your mother sucks big fat elephant dicks,” that kind of thing. If you were to eliminate them, each disc would run about 78 minutes.

I haven’t seen Shutter Island (and, if all goes well, never will), so I don’t know if that would yield anything worth adding. No Direction Home came out after I first put this together, but—as with The Last Waltz (where I cheat once)—it seems not quite right to use that anyway.

"Gimme Shelter"'s The Departed, right? That's another one that came out after I first put this together. You could probably swap that for "Jeepster," which truthfully I don't remember from Alice.

clemenza, Saturday, 11 September 2010 17:03 (thirteen years ago) link

Great idea. Pretty sure "Gimme Shelter" is in Goodfellas too, along with "Monkey Man".

Monkey Man's in Goodfellas, but I think Gimme Shelter is not--it might be in Casino?

no Harry Nilsson, but still cool...

really want to try out that Can comp; also like the Pearl Jam, not so sure about the Jefferson Airplane (no Rejoyce? no Hey Fredrick?)

'Gimme Shelter' is in The Departed and at least one other of his films, possibly more... I remember him joking somewhere that Shine A Light'd look kind of stupid if the Stones didn't play it (I can't remember if they took him up on it or not)

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 11 September 2010 21:01 (thirteen years ago) link

I never considered either "Monkey Man" (which I kind of hate) or "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" (which I love for the first two-sevenths, then hate) for a second. I'm pretty sure I have, though, made a variation of this that substitued Nilsson's "Without You" for something. I definitely have "Without You" in my Scorsese folder.

Neil Young - Best of the Rest

I initially intended to omit songs included on his Greatest Hits but that still left out too many contenders so I omitted songs on his 3-LP Decade compilation as well. If you are totally unfamiliar with NY's music I would suggest starting with those two. The songs are listed in order of release with a couple of exceptions to maintain the original sequence. Young is so prolific - releasing on average an album a year for most of his career - that it's difficult to assemble an anthology without someone asking why this or that song wasn't included. I've tried to select songs that represent the different phases of his career although some albums are passed over entirely for lack of space.

Disc 1
1. Flying On The Ground Is Wrong
2. Here We Are In The Years
3. Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
4. Tell Me Why
5. Out On The Weekend
6. Revolution Blues
7. On The Beach
8. World On A String
9. Mellow My Mind
10. Don't Cry No Tears
11. Barstool Blues
12. Look Out For My Love
13. Thrasher
14. Pocahontas
15. Powderfinger
16. Little Wing
17. Shots
18. Computer Age
19. Don't Take Your Love Away From Me

Disc 2
1. Wonderin'
2. Hippie Dream
3. Feel Your Love
4. Don't Cry
5. Someday
6. No More
7. Mansion On The Hill
8. From Hank To Hendrix
9. Philadelphia
10. I'm The Ocean
11. Throw Your Hatred Down
12. Razor Love
13. Ordinary People

I'd be a terrible person to put together a Neil compilation. It'd be a disc-and-a-half covering Buffalo Springfield, CSNY, and everything up to Zuma (well, "Ocean Girl"), with four or five or six songs tacked on at the end to take care of 1977-2010.

Bardo Pond - A Drug Reference

Obviously, this was going to take two CDs. To avoid repeating my old Bardo POX too much, I tried to include as many tracks from non-studio albums and side projects as I could, which is a bit tricky considering that those tracks tend to be well past the 10-minute range, i.e. less apt for compilation purposes. Even so, I had to include one monster jam ("Narmada"), because, Bardo, right? I'll admit I'm not as into their looser, shambolic jams -- my favorite Bardo tends to be heavy and pummeling -- so I hope the side-project tracks add some hairier breadth.

CD1: Vision Fades Out of Sight
1. Xxvii (Bardo Pond - Chamber Music)
2. Wank (Bardo Pond - Amanita)
3. Walking Stick Man (Bardo Pond - Set & Setting)
4. JD (Bardo Pond - On the Ellipse)
5. Silver Pavilion (Bardo Pond - Peri)
6. Quiet Tristin (Bardo Pond - Cypher Documents)
7. Flux (Bardo Pond - Lapsed)
8. Tommy Gun Angel (Bardo Pond - Lapsed)
9. Narmada (Bardo Pond - Vol. IV)
10. Raise (Vapour Theories - Decant)

CD2: Folded in Pure Heart of Night
1. Sources in Cleveland (Hash Jar Tempo - Under Glass)
2. Destroying Angel (Bardo Pond - Ticket Crystals)
3. Every Man (Bardo Pond - On the Ellipse)
4. Sweet Sapphire I (Bardo Pond - Vol. VI)
5. Jinn (Alasehir - Sharing the Sacred)
6. Miserable Miracle (500mg - Vertical Approach)
7. Montana Sacra II (Bardo Pond - Ticket Crystals)
8. Two Planes (Bardo Pond - Dilate)
9. In the Cells of Walken's Corti (Hash Jar Tempo - Under Glass)

Release Notes: No release date yet for the US version, and it apparently has a slightly different track listing - I'm into CB replaces Papal Visit on cd 1, and Guest Informant is last. On cd 2 The Birmingham School of Business School is replaced by I Wake Up in the City, and Edinburgh Man replaces Antidotes.

Vinyl version of the UK version has a limited edition 7" of their cover of A Day in the Life with Medical Acceptance Gate on the b-side.

Excerpts from liner notes, written by Joe Totale:

The spectres that crept out of early Fall were urban-industrial spectres, city hobgoblins in fact, Anglicised versions of Lovecraft, with something of Machen’s seedy suburban horror and MR James’ fables of curiosity undone. The Fall replaced bell, book and candle with repetition, repetition, repetition to divine and exorcise these spectres and abominations, finding a happy meeting point between tribal incantation and the most primitive and horrible sounding rock and roll. It was a spectacularly potent incarnation of The Fall, still many people’s idea of classic Fall. Steve Hanley’s adamantine bass and Craig Scanlon’s scraping, spidery, termagent guitar combined with Smith not to create California sun, New York cool or Kraut abstactions but tense walks home through the icy drizzle, the angles of the shadows formed by council housing, decaying factories and derelict churches the perfect home for goulish beings.

They simultaneously called up and cast out, invoked, satirized and exorcised.

Despite the gloom, the overall attitude is one of glee and cold wry delight, energy and hilarity, and an immense pleasure in language, character and imagery.

POSTERITY IS SILENT, LIKE THE DEAD, AND MORE PATHETIC. (W. Lewis)

Although the recurrence of history has been part of The Fall's world from the beginning, the contrived refurbishment of the recent past for reasons of cynical gain or feeble-minded nostalgia/youth fixation has only explicitly been a theme, more correctly an obsession since 1993's Infotainment Scan. Here and in print Smith attacked the revival of '70s culture, seeing in it the apotheosis to power of the children of that generation; baseball capped bald men, selling their money to retrieve their mouldering youth from its grave. The only generation that wanted to be like its parents, said Smith. Certainly their values are not his: nostalgic, comfort-seeking, meritocratic, meretricious and devoutly materialistic, atavistic - 'forgetting the endless drive against nature' and soft-Romantic. Set against this is Smith's modernist and urban-industrial creative credo, part of the English anti-authoritairan and mystical tradition; mocking, suspicious, frame breaking, antinomian, anti-system, punk.

the spectres that appear in later Fall are airier more dangerous creatures altogether - Temperance, Reformation, Nostalgia, Youth-Fixation - that prey on society as a whole rather than the odd unfortunate.

Beauty is a rarely considered aspect of The Fall’s output; those ice-clear guitars, the determined, obstructive drums, the deep voids over which the outlandish engines of their songs fly, so sparse, cold, rich and strange, the dry instructions, the splendid descriptions. Tommy Shooter is laced with this beauty. The central riff has a melancholy ring to it, and underneath the rockabilly, subterranean sound effects clank and chime, knelling in accordance with Smith’s vision of armageddon gleaned from tabloid scraps - ‘The clouds are darkening with wings of chickens; they’re coming home to roost’. It is the prospect of a land where the continual dilution and banishment of the strong meats necessary to a proper standard of living - alcohol, cigarettes, hard work, hard words - has withered the capacity for mental fight: ‘reduce your needs to noodles, your Doberman Pinschers to poodles’. Nabokov always used to say that he knew when he was healthiest when he was able to smoke 60 cigarettes a day; our country is perilously weak.
(from the original draft - excised because Tommy Shooter was no longer needed and the unnecessary, irrelevant and downright silly opinion-mongering at the end.)

(Editorial Notes: CD 1 and CD 2 are roughly split at the point when Brix first left the group as a convenient halfway point which nevertheless gives slightly more scope to the early years. Many people would also consider this incontrovertibly their best period. The strength of the material from their first decade demands perhaps a stronger editorial policy than has been shown. Tempo House is there for example to showcase Steve Hanley's wonderful bass playing with his brother's drumming, but where are the longer narrative epics? Spectre vs Rector? The NWRA? New Face in Hell? The last of these most people (myself included) would consider a serious omission. Wings will have to stand in for these.

Spent a long time deciding what should go first on cd 1. First was thinking about something suitably bombastic: Psykick Dancehall is too obvious, the live version of The NWRA from A Part of America Therein was a strong contender, as what was there for much of the time, Just Step S'ways. In the end went for New Puritain, after all, we're not taking any f'ing prisoners are we?'

More problematic is the complete absence of any material from The Wonderful and Frightening World of The Fall (particularly Lay of the Land and Stephen Song), Bend Sinister (particularly Dktr Faustus and Gross Chapel: British Grenadiers) and The Frenz Experiment (particularly Oswald Defence Lawyer, Frenz and Athlete Cured). Both are gestured towards with the inclusion of Hey! Luciani (an eyebrow raiser perhaps, but I think a great song) and Guest Informant.

To NK Roachment: Yarbles may look tokenistic from what is a very strong album (particularly awkward are the omissions of Bombast and Paintwork) but I love it, so it's there.

Just one piece of housekeeping - the version of Big New Prinz is a live one from when it was revived in 1994, but the song is from the earlier years and so I've kept it there.

Serious omissions - everything, obviously - but aside from those already mentioned: Words of Expectation, any of the C n C songs (it was a dog fight between C n C Stars on 45 and C n C Black Night, with their Deep Purple cover, C n C Stars on 45 would have won, fwiw), History of the World, Jawbone and the Air-Rifle, Repetition, Bombast, Backdrop and the session version of Twister.

CD 2 - Serious issues here are the absence of any material from Shift-Work, which although many Fall fans loathe I personally think contains some of Smith's strongest writing, particularly Edinburgh Man and You Haven't Found it Yet. I struggled all ways to find a way to shoehorn in I Wake Up in the City, which is magnificent, sloppy and fun, but in the end let Antidotes stand for the Smith's newfound incomprehensibility (although I see it is included on the US version).

The excellent live version of Lost in Music, from the 27 Points, spent a long time on the list but ended up getting pushed out by competing interests, which means there isn't anything from the attractive but in some ways lightweight The Infotainment Scan. There is also nothing from their return to form album The Light User Syndrome, which also marked the brief return of Brix Smith to the fold. Although Fall Heads Roll, Reformation and Imperial Wax Solvent all have strong material I didn't feel there was anything strong enough to warrant excluding what was eventually chosen (although Youwanna, Fall Sound, Scenario, Systematic Abuse, Alton Towers and 50-Year-Old Man all came close)

One bit of housekeeping - the album Levitate, with Hurricane Edward on, is not available on spotify, so remains a ghostly presence.

Serious omissions: I'm a Mummy, Two Librans, Inevitable, Hostile, You Pep, Bill is Dead, Paranoia Man in Cheap Sh*t Room, Service.)

Thinking about it now, the under-represenation of mid-'80s material probably needs rectifying, but hey, my work here is done.

GamalielRatsey, Sunday, 12 September 2010 11:15 (thirteen years ago) link

ha, there's serious overlap with a sub-80-minute Fall playlist I made a few months ago, and that's a great write-up! will listen to 'em both though because there are a few songs I'm less well-acquainted with

shame that Hurricane Edward isn't on Spotify otherwise it'd *definitely* have been on mine - 4 1/2 Inch is adequate compensation though

everyone in the world needs to hear The Birmingham School Of Business School

Cheers, a, it was a bit of a nightmare to be honest. Too much, 'but I can't leave that off'. If it'd been less of a 'best of' slant I might have gone for some more obscure stuff (why isn't Cary Grant's Wedding on there for instance? Or the TTs version of No Xmas for John Quays? or the Acklam Spectre v Rector?) Oh well.

Oh, and also wanted to say, I don't know about my Fall one, but I'm getting some serious enjoyment from the other ones I've listened to so far (Kevin Ayers, Elvis). Hoping to get round to all of them in time.

My compulsive and frequent listening to Saint Etienne's back catalogue over the last eighteen months is akin to having one day realised that a cool, comforting yet casual acquaintance of twenty years may in fact be the love of your life after all, subsequently revealing hidden depths and deeper emotional connections as time spent together increases.

As stated, no singles, but at least a third of the tracks here probably could've been and the selection of instrumentals, whether for the dancefloor or elsewhere, are just as crucial in demonstrating and defining the act's range of ideas and influences - perhaps wider than any other UK act of the last twenty years (and a compilation like this may make that more apparent than a singles compilation (plus there's been at least three of them already) would.

I had wanted to do a compilation for The System for years, since there has never been an official one. Regarding the until-recently unreleased tracks, I picked "She Said Yes" (which dates from the time of X-Periment) because of its stellar arrangement/production and "Sonic Fire" because I think it's Murphy's best-ever vocal performance.

A few of the YouTube links are live versions when I couldn’t find the studio versions. “Striking Matches” is a remix. “This Road” is an early mix with some different lyrics, but it’s still the best non-LP Squeeze song ever.

As for the title, Trini Lopez and Nana Mouskouri are mentioned in the lyrics of “Piccadilly” and “Daphne” respectively.

This is the decidedly poppier side of Husker Du, my personal preference. I know there's more room on each disc but these 32 tracks capture everything that was great about the band and shows off their tremendous songwriting. Sometimes less is more.

Great job on Husker Du. The only three favorites that jump out at me as missing are "Newest Industry," "Divide and Conquer," and "Love Is All Around." But you've got most all of them. (I'm one of those poppy Husker Du guys.)

I like the look of your Eitzel / AMC anthology Preseident Keyes, but I would find room for "Goodbye To Love", and the Songs of Love Live take on "Nothing Can Bring Me Down" on even a one-disc best-of.

needs "sleeping beauty" from golden age also. and cape canaveral from SF. too close to that band to be subjective about a best-of I think.

8. Pir (EP7, 1999)
9. Drane (Peel Session, 1999)
10. Os viex3 (Oversteps, 2010)

Tried to cover their whole career, no more than one pick from each release. Since they've never been given the best-of treatment I tried to avoid being too obscure or personal with the selection. Disc one mostly showcases their harder, glitchier side, disc two is more melodic/ambient. No helpful descriptive titles though, they don't seem to fit in with the aesthetic.

Disc 2 contains one Gescom track, in theory Gescom is a loose collective any one of whom could have worked on it, but I'll be damned if Keynell isn't by Autechre alone, it contains so many of their sonic signatures. Keynell 4 in particular, the one chosen here, is a masterpiece of the layering and timing of simple elements.

Youtubes are just standard fan uploads, except for Gantz Graf which has the critically acclaimed video by Alex Rutterford.

VERY nice job on the Autechre comp. Is there no more room to squeeze in something from Move of Ten? (I would pick "pce freeze 2.8i" or "Iris was a Pupil," depending on which disc had room. Although, actually, I would break the "no more than one pick from each release" rule and add TR's "Eutow" first, if I could just squeeze in one more track on disc 2.)

Tracks I didn't know before browsing through your comp: the three remixes you picked, Keynell 4. Enjoyed all four of these.

Sorry Whiney, that came off a little passive aggressive. Not trying to throw down a gauntlet or anything, I would be genuinely interested to see what you'd come with. Can't get my head round Adult Themes I'm afraid. Maybe I was the wrong man for the job.

Still think my selection is two discs of great songs though.

Thanks, dude. Yeah "Reel To Real" seemed over-represented with 8 tracks but, damn, they're all so good! Most people are completely unaware of anything before "New Gold Dream", I wish this comp was real. "Early Gold" is as close as it gets, and it's paltry I comparison.

xpost. Yeah I when I saw your track listing I did think that's quite a few from Real to Real but then I flicked through the album and totally got why you couldn't leave any of your choices off, it's such a great album.

The only song I would have added would have been Destiny which is my favourite song from the first album but it's a great introduction for anyone who doesn't know they were a great band to begin with. It's been stated many times but they really are one of the bands who had the biggest drop in quality going from brilliant to utter shit.

"I also want to have Casio keyboards on sail boats" - Arthur Russell

Limiting myself to one length of CD made matters difficult, given Russell's penchant (and mine) for extended jams. I feel bad about not including more Loose Joints material, "Tiger Stripes", "The Platform on the Ocean", some more from Instrumentals...But I stand by my selection, there's not a single track I don't love.

1. Dinosaur - Kiss Me Again
2. Loose Joints - Tell You (Today)
3. Dinosaur L - #5 (Go Bang)
4. Arthur Russell - In the Light of the Miracle*
5. Arthur Russell - Let's Go Swimming (Gulf Stream Dub)
6. Arthur Russell - That's Us/Wild Combination
7. Arthur Russell - Hop on Down
8. Arthur Russell - Lucky Cloud*
9. Arthur Russell - See-Through
10. Arthur Russell - She's the Star/I Take this Time
11. Arthur Russell - Instrumentals 1 Part 1
12. Arthur Russell - A Little Lost
13. Bright and Early - Love is Overtaking Me
14. Flying Hearts - What it's Like

* These are versions from Another Thought

Spotify
Because of gaps in the Spotify catalogue, the playlist has a butchered 8-minute version of "Kiss Me Again" and the Francois Kervorkian remix of "Go Bang!" rather than the version from 24 -> 24 Music.

Thanks! Fwiw, a couple of my selections on disc 1 were constrained by trying to squeeze it onto one cd - would prob have preferred Second Bad Vilbel (hence the typo), and Clipper instead of Dael. But these are minor quibbles. also Gelk instead of Gaekwad might have been a more populist choice, but the latter was just too awesome imo to leave out.

ledge, no Lexis - "Hynpotise (AE slow mix)"? For shame. If I'd put an AE comp together, I maybe would've had some more bangers in the "Eutow" vein (like "Calbruc") as opposed to the crunchy glitchy stuff, though including "Calbruc" would've knocked out "Cichli," and I don't think anyone is that poxy fulish.

Totally agree with "Keynell 4" -- in a weird way, the rest of the tracks sound a bit too like Autechre to be actually made by Booth and Brown (i.e. more like their buddies emulating their sound) but "Keynell 4" has got enough twists and flourishes to strike me as a genuine B&B production.

Ace graphic, though. Kind of prefer that the band name doesn't appear in that post, only the graphic and the track list, just in keeping with Ae's obscurity.

thanks for the shout out regarding my MBV one, though it was way easier than one would imagine it being (that being: easy). i just included something from each EP/LP in my collection (that would be all of them) ... actually i guess i kinda fail as a "greatest hits" artist. had i done that i probably would've just stuck loveless on a cd and screwed with the order of the songs.

Hurley is notable for having numerous different versions of his songs scattered across his many albums, sometimes separated by decades of time. I am very particular about which ones I prefer, hence the large chunk from the relatively recent Ida Con Snock LP. The only wild card here is the live-in-Vienna version of "Ducks Yas Yas", courtesy of tape traders.

No idea how to do Spotify, sorry. My ILX webmail works if that helps. I know emil.y was excited about my Muslimgauze picks, but I have lost the tracklist for the best-of I made once upon a time and have to start from scratch. Gimme a couple of days.

I find that Cooley's songs jump out at me, hence a health dose from him. But I imagine this will be fairly controversial as DBT fans don't always agree on the best stuff on each album. And that's a credit to the strength of the material. I haven't had a chance to mull over the new album enough to make picks - I'd have to bump stuff from here, too, and I wouldn't want to!

Notes:

Somewhere here or elsewhere, I recently read a reasonable argument for Stereolab as a proper "singles band," and they are to the extent that they have a lot of 7"s that are a real pain in the ass to track down, but ultimately there is no convenient way to navigate their catalog. Actually, their best material is spread across so many formats & tucked away in so many nooks & crannies that, were it not for the helpful Switched On compilations & box sets, seeking any kind of comprehensive overview would be a fool's errand. I have been collecting their records since 1992 &, while I can't claim to have everything, I have hopefully taken in enough over the years to be able to assemble something approximating a reasonable, general "best-of" compilation.

Chronologically & stylistically, Emperor Tomato Ketchup is an obvious dividing line - it is their last release to feature any of the VU/motorik tendencies of their early years & their first to embrace the post-rock, IDM, pop & jazz elements which informed their later records. So the installments are divided b/w pre-&-post-1996 tracks, with ETK tracks on either side & "Jenny Ondioline" presented separately as their career centerpiece (duh). I realize I cheated a bit by extending the play length to encompass an extra disc, The Groop's catalog is difficult enough to pare down w/o having to make space for a twenty-minute superjam.

Obviously, this is ridiculously subjective, so I encourage ILXors to mess w/ the trax lineup & argue for their substitutions/omissions/etc. b/c I am aware that Stereolab is pretty sacred business around here.

*Listen to this playlist (on Grooveshark - sorry, no Spotify, but this should work universally).

15. Pais Tropical (Jorge Ben, 1969)
16. Santa Clara Clareou (Bem Vinda Amizade, 1981)

Jorge Ben has released over 30 albums so I tried to limit the compilation to what I consider his most essential songs up until 1981. Hopefully this songs will pique interest to newcomers and will prompt them to check out the rest of his catalogue.
Spotify doesn't work in my country terribly sorry for not providing a streaming playlist.
Cover is a lazy revamp of his 1969 self titled album so I decided to be extra lazy and give the same title to the compilation.
Hope you enjoy.

11. *Lucky Guy *Skip to 2:32 ( Hermit Of Mink Hollow ,1978)
12. I Saw The Light ( Something/Anything ,1972)

2. Couldn't I Just Tell You ( Something/Anything ,1972)
3. A Dream Goes On Forever ( Todd ,1974)

9. Can We Still Be Friends ( Hermit Of Mink Hollow ,1978)
10. The Night The Carousel Burned Down ( Something/Anything ,1972)
11. Hurting For You ( Hermit Of Mink Hollow ,1978)
12. It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference ( Something/Anything ,1972)

* Finally got around to doing this and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I download Rundgren's complete discography about 4 months ago and slowly started dipping into all his LP's, having previously only heard 'Hermit Of Mink Hollow'. I would now consider myself to be slightly obsessed with his songs. Genius isn't a word to be used lightly, but the amount of brilliant production, chord progressions, hooks and melodies is undeniable. My interest kind of trailed off after Hermit....there are some decent tracks from later albums, but overall they pale in comparison to his best period (1970-1978). I sequenced it in a build up and release way, that avoids having too many ballads in a row and hopefully sustains interest. Also, some tracks kind of compliment & bleed into each other (e.g the cymbals and synths of 'All the Children Sing' flows nicely into the style of 'The Night The Carousel Burned Down' . Mainly, I just wanted to make a decent introduction to Todd Rundgren, thus the inclusion of obvious tracks like 'I Saw The Light', 'Hello It's Me' etc. Anyways, have a listen and see what you think.

Yeah, excellent work on the 'lab, Pillbox. Kudos in particular for not doing it chronologically, which is the obvious temptation but not very Stereolab-esque (cf. Switched Ons 2 and 3 and the Oscillions box), and for the way you deal with the millstone that is Jenny O.

Including a track by Turn On is my only quibble. A separate "Stereolab side projects" best of / anthology is surely called for! ;)

Maresnest - much respect for your eternal love of XTC, but I gotta say I'd have significantly different picks from the albums. 5 tracks from Mummer, just 1 from The Big Express, and 7 from Skylarking? That seems unbalanced, I guess you're down on TBE but it's my all-time fave. Tracks you didn't pick that I'd substitute:

Mummer: Great Fire / Human Alchemy
The Big Express: Wake Up / All You Pretty Girls / This World Over
Oranges & Lemons: Garden Of Earthly Delights / Poor Skeleton Steps Out
Nonsuch: The Ballad Of Peter Pumpkinhead
Wasp Star: Boarded Up

Funny that I think of Unrest as a band that put out 2 or 3 albums (not technically correct, but that's how it feels) and yet they seem awfully hard to reduce to one CD. No major complaints with the compilation (well, maybe the absence of She Makes Me Shake Like A Soul Machine) but it's still missing a fair amount of stuff I love.

You have justified my love.

I'm glad I could work in both the light (What Do You Do, Quiet Walks) and the heavy (We Are Normal, 11 Moustachioed Daughters) to show that the music was as good as the comedy. Should have squeezed in "My Brother Makes the Noises for the Talkies" though.

Hey Gerald, you are right about the balance issue. On choosing, the idea of balance didn't come into it at-all for me.

If I had given myself a another track per cd I would most likely have included 'Seagulls Screaming' and 'Train Running Low On Soul Coal'

It does give the impression that I may be down on TBE, but I do dig it's many charms.

FWIW Red Brick Dream (a TBE b-side) is my favourite XTC song of all time.

I began working on Kraftwerk but felt awful because I couldn't really imagine anyone enjoying my mix - there's nothing on there that will surprise existing Kraftwerk fans (I like a lot of their older semi-rare stuff but it doesn't really flow on a mix very well with their more well-known electropop stuff), and it doesn't really serve as a very good intro for non-Kraftwerk fans because my fav songs by them are pretty predictable - you could probably go to allmusic.com and look for the songs with checkmarks by them and do just as well. I listened to a working version of the playlist and just felt like shit so I stopped.

I gave up on Microphones/Mt. Eerie because, after not really listening to his stuff for a couple years, I realize I loved the way they sounded sitting by myself in my car on the roof of my lol college parking garage, hilariously stoned and poofing out battie smoke through a doob tube, more than it sounds to me today after working for the man all day. When I was in <3 with the microphones I used to be able to bike out to a trail and walk around in the woods and lay in the middle of some guy's field all day without anyone bothering me or caring that I was gone. Now I'm stuck in the city, bummed out, etc, and the music doesn't really transport me to a different place so much as painfully remind me of good times that I can't get back to anymore. /emo So I quit making that one as well.

Sorry, I suck!

Moka, Thursday, 30 September 2010 07:57 (thirteen years ago) link

ZS i'd be really interested in seeing both mixes. I've only dabbled in Kraftwerk and know nothing about Microphones/Mt Eerie, so can only be curious. Isn't the key to this that you just throw out what you like regardless of whether it's sequenced well or rare or well known? I'd love to see/hear your window onto those two if you still feel up to it :)

yeah whatever (whatever), Thursday, 30 September 2010 21:19 (thirteen years ago) link

you could probably go to allmusic.com and look for the songs with checkmarks by them and do just as well

I did just that for Kraftwerk and in the end it didn't do much for me aside from a few obvious things I already dug. They're a very difficult band to anthologize.

Yikes, that cover's quite big, which only emphasises how bad I am at doing that sort of stuff. Damn.

The first side is meant to be the darker, proggier stuff, and the second is supposed to be lighter and poppier, which is why it's so Slapp Happy dominated (also, a lot of it still isn't poppy at all, ha). Also, I unabashedly love Everybody's Slimmin', even though it is incredibly stupid.

Fine, you can do the Talk Talk one. I had a damn good best-of mix going on. It was "Talk Talk Talk Talk" (Streets Various Artists compilation), "Talk Talk" (The Party's Over), "Dum Dum Girl", "Such a Shame", and "It's My Life" (It's My Life), "Why Is It So Hard?" (It's My Mix and Asides, Besides), "Life's What You Make It" (The Colour of Spring), "Happiness Is Easy (12" mix)" (B-Side to "I Don't Believe in You" and Asides, Besides), "Tomorrow Started (live)" (London '86), "I Believe in You" (Spirit of Eden), "After the Flood" and "New Grass" (Laughing Stock) and the Liquid People Vocal remix of "It's My Life." But discovering the Liquid People track inspired me to find other remixes and I couldn't find any, and the "Tomorrow Started" live version inspired me to find other live versions and I couldn't find any of those either, but on the other hand I didn't want to turn it in with "I Believe in You" and "Life's What You Make It" and "New Grass," which everybody on ILM's already heard and praised 1,000 times before, and plus I couldn't make a decent album cover, and I don't have Spotify, so eventually I just gave up. Hopefully you can do better. Best of luck!

That Motorpsycho Anthology is great! Nice choices, Captain Lorax, though why no stuff from their latest two or three albums (some songs from Little Lucid Moments would've fit neatly om the Motorpepics album, like Alchemyst)?

But hey, I really like it.

Marty Innerlogic, Thursday, 14 October 2010 08:28 (thirteen years ago) link

Thanks Marty. I think the Anthology rocks as well :)
I highly recommend anyone to test drive Motorpsycho

Interesting that you mentioned The Alchemyst. That is my favorite song off of Little Lucid Moments. Judging by reviews most people prefer one of the first two songs. I didn't have space for The Alchemyst

I found myself craving psychedelic stuff a few days ago so I made a third disc just for fun. I think I'll eventually make a 4th disc for completeness sake (and include a couple epics that weren't able to fit on the second disc). However the first two discs are the still going to be the meat of my Anthology.

Disc 3 - MotorPsych (thus continuing the trend of crappy under-thought disc names that aren't entirely accurate)

1. Feel (Timothy's Monster 1994)
2. Watersound (Timothy's Monster 1994)
3. Sancho Says (Black Hole/Blank Canvas 2006)
4. Blindfolded (Phanerothyme 2001)
5. On My Pillow (Timothy's Monster 1994)
6. Pale Day (The Nerve Tattoo EP 1995)
7. Close Your Eyes (Heavy Metal Fruit 2010)
8. Mr. Butterclut Goes To The Fair, Meets The Viscount, And That's Where We Leave Him At The End Of This Episode... (Timothy's Monster Deluxe Edition 2010)
9. Snafu (Serpentine EP 2003)
10. The Slow Phaseout (Phanerothyme 2001)
11. Albuquerque (The Tussler 2003 remaster (I wouldn't have included this if I had known it was a cover))
12. Abendspaziergang (Walkin' With J EP 1999)
13. Sideway Spiral, Pt. 1 (Angels and Daemons at Play 1997)
14. KR-3 (Walkin' With J EP 1999)
15. Tuesday Morning (Demon Box 1993)
16. Timothy in the Magic City (Various We'll sail out far...maybe a little too far... 1997)
17. 30/30 (Let Them Eat Cake 2000)
18. Mad Sun (The Nerve Tattoo EP 1995)
19. The 29th Bulletin (Black Hole/Blank Canvas 2006)

Somehow 'Child of the Future' songs got scrapped but I wouldn't mind subbing Albuquerque for The Ozzylot (Hidden in a Girl). I'll do so on Grooveshark
Divshare, Grooveshark (seems to be streaming better for my 256kb mp3s lately)

I'm looking for a good compilation of Deconstruction era Kylie Minogue,

there has to be a good 60 mins of her songs when she was aiming to be a credible artist, and working with the Manics etc.

Stuff like her work with Towa Tei and the like....

my opinionation (Hamildan), Thursday, 26 May 2011 10:52 (twelve years ago) link

when she was aiming to be a credible artist

As opposed to those years she was aiming to be an incredible artist? WTF does this rockist shit even mean?

'what are you, the Hymen Protection League of America?' (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 26 May 2011 14:02 (twelve years ago) link

I mean after the SAW days, when there was a definite push from deconstruction to get her seen as a songwriter and artist.

Definitely the record label positioning of her immediately post SAW.

my opinionation (Hamildan), Thursday, 26 May 2011 15:03 (twelve years ago) link

It gets slagged off, that period, but the whole reason it failed was down to the record company going bust.

Yes, that only happened some years after she'd left, but it does seem that the slide was happening already.

It started fine with "Confide", number 2, but the rest seemed to get underpowered marketing...

Want to prove to the world that there's more to Daler than just "Tunak Tunak Tun"!? Okay, I left it on in the end, but seriously, paring this all down to an hour, you get a pretty amazing set. Daler Mehndi takes you to the clouds and back to the safety of your own home. Since his newer stuff is less well known I decided to start with that, then end with some real classic tunes.

1. Bhootiye (2011)
2. Jogi (Tumba version) (2011)
3. Koi Dheere Dheere (2007)
4. Rang de Basanti (2008)
5. Kach Tutt Gayi (2007)
6. Patti Pudina (2001)
7. Boom Boom (2000)
8. Hum Tere Hi Deewane Hain (2000) (gettin into some Daler slowjams now)
9. Yug Beet Gaye (1997)
10. Bolo Ta Ra Ra (1995)
11. Dil Mera Nal Nal Nal (1995)
12. Tunak Tunak Tun (1998)

All of these tracks are great and I stand behind every one. He's definitely done a lot more great material than this but for approximately 60 minutes I couldn't get it any better!

Revive! Never saw this before. Haven't checked the Spotify lists yet, but so far Moka's Jorge Ben mix is still streaming at Grooveshark http://grooveshark.com/#!/playlist/Jorge+Ben+ILM+Best+Of/36058543

I've no idea why I orginally shunned Taj Mahal from that Jorge Ben comp. It's perhaps one of his most well known songs.

Anyone care to have a go at PJ Harvey? Would love a great career overview.

love this thread. came at the time spotify wasn't as all pervasive though, so there are probably fewer playlists than track lists. would be great if anyone did create the spotify playlist in the end for their chosen specialist subject.

*off to listen to geir's genesis playlist...

I am listening to a nice Superchunk / Mac McCaughan playlist on Spotify but I'd love to see something from one of our ILX brethren.

I made this Guided By Voices playlist as an intro for a friend who didn’t know where to start. For no particular actual reason, it’s limited to 80 minutes so’s to fit on a CD-R.

Big Thief are a band a lot of Ilxors love (for good reason) but their discography is fairly large, so here's a personal favourites playlist I made and spent quite a bit of time compiling and honing:

Speaking of GBV, several years ago I made a part 2 of their 2003 best-of comp (all pre-reunion). The version of “My Valuable Hunting Knife” is an alternate.
