Johnny Fever, Friday, 1 February 2013 02:54 (eleven years ago) link

Portishead takes this for me by some margin. I like a lot of these, though.

lol Streets

Johnny Fever, Friday, 1 February 2013 02:55 (eleven years ago) link

can't see past the Streets here, whole list is a testimony to the enduring quality of genuine Art

Hermann Hesher (Noodle Vague), Friday, 1 February 2013 02:56 (eleven years ago) link

Only ones I've heard are Big Boi and Miguel, both great (I'm assuming Piracy Funds Terrorism is different enough from Arular not to count?) so I'll sit this one out, but I hereby pledge to listen, at least halfway through, to whatever wins this poll.

kaputt > third > fever ray > miguel > knife > lcd > streets > mia > kanye > big boi

ciderpress, Friday, 1 February 2013 03:00 (eleven years ago) link

Oh and I streamed College Dropout last summer to see what the fuss was about, but I got bored and turned it off I think. Or got drunk and fell asleep.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 1 February 2013 03:01 (eleven years ago) link

portishead by a light-year

if lcd sstm win this i'm...jfc i don't even know

imago, Friday, 1 February 2013 03:03 (eleven years ago) link

guess fever ray/the knife make it a bit less than a light-year tbf, and the big boi album was cool

imago, Friday, 1 February 2013 03:04 (eleven years ago) link

If we'd held a poll for 2003, I imagine Speakerbox/The Love Below would've won. Or maybe Fever to Tell. Or Elephant? I dunno. 2003 was a pretty bountiful year.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 1 February 2013 03:06 (eleven years ago) link

The Knife or LCD for me. if i'm feeling nostalgic, The Streets would also get a look-in. none of these are particular favourites of mine.

charlie h, Friday, 1 February 2013 03:07 (eleven years ago) link

a strangely isolated place surprise top 5 placement on back of hyperactive imago repping campaign xp

imago, Friday, 1 February 2013 03:08 (eleven years ago) link

heh. seems like everyone has a "pet peeve" entry on this list of otherwise beloved albums.

my pet peeve entry is big boi. all other albums i have either loved or respected. my vote went to original pirate material though, with third a close second :3

cocktail onion (fennel cartwright), Friday, 1 February 2013 03:09 (eleven years ago) link

I'd rep for that p hard too xp

Johnny Fever, Friday, 1 February 2013 03:09 (eleven years ago) link

mia > miguel > yeezy > lcd > protishead > knife > big boi > destroyer > fever ray > streets

The Reverend, Friday, 1 February 2013 03:14 (eleven years ago) link

Kish Kash might have won in 2003, but I could imagine it coming in just behind Speakerboxx/TLB.

Best here is Silent Shout followed by Original Pirate Material (yeah I said it).

Tim F, Friday, 1 February 2013 03:15 (eleven years ago) link

Kish Kash very well could've won.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 1 February 2013 03:17 (eleven years ago) link

This is looney talk, but I may just run a 2003 poll at some point (in the distant future).

gonna throw this out there in a bid to cool tempers...scoring albums is for cocks

Hermann Hesher (Noodle Vague), Friday, 1 February 2013 03:21 (eleven years ago) link

I suspect that Kish Kash might not win now though - a sound so perfect for 2003 that at the ten year mark it might seem quite unfashionable.

Tim F, Friday, 1 February 2013 03:22 (eleven years ago) link

Or, Cox. xp

Johnny Fever, Friday, 1 February 2013 03:22 (eleven years ago) link

I still bang around to Kish Kash a couple times a year.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 1 February 2013 03:23 (eleven years ago) link

oh yeah it's awesome, that's me trying to sniff mood changes rather than pass judgment

Tim F, Friday, 1 February 2013 03:24 (eleven years ago) link

Sure. And that's why doing a end-of-year poll so far removed from the actual year would basically be unpredictable. I'm intrigued, but not entirely sold on the idea (and I have Madonna coming up pretty soon). Someday, maybe.

Bee OK, Friday, 1 February 2013 04:38 (eleven years ago) link

the knife > portishead > miguel > fever ray > kanye > destroyer > m.i.a > big boi > lcd soundsystem

i've never heard original pirate material and don't think i'd like it.

monotony, Friday, 1 February 2013 04:45 (eleven years ago) link

silent shout > kaleidoscope dream > fever ray > the college dropout >>>>>>>>> arular > sir lucious left foot > third >>>>>>> original pirate material >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (x infinity, including pretty much everything else in the world) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> kaputt

first four are classics.

arular and lucious are very fun.

third is very admirable but i never want to listen to it and is also the worst portishead album by some distance.

OPM might be better than that but it's been irredeemably sullied by everything skinner did afterwards (and for a lot of what he inspired). literally have no desire ever to listen to it again except maybe "weak become heroes".

kaputt is worthless horseshit and destroyer needs to be taken out back and put out of our misery.

lex pretend, Friday, 1 February 2013 07:38 (eleven years ago) link

o i forgot sound of silver. that goes between the streets and destroyer. just a very boring and unremarkable album.

lex pretend, Friday, 1 February 2013 07:39 (eleven years ago) link

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Friday, 1 February 2013 07:51 (eleven years ago) link

i like to think new amerykah was the actual winner of 2008 considering it beat everything in the half decade poll.

prolego, Friday, 1 February 2013 08:21 (eleven years ago) link

Fever Ray for me. Never heard of Miguel or Destroyer, all the others in the poll are okay, except for The Streets, which is corny and awful.

I think I've mentioned this before: I bought the Portishead album when it came out due to all the praise, but I was only able to listen to it twice, and it's been sitting on the shelf ever since. It was just so unrelentlessly bleak and grey that I couldn't force myself to play it again. So yeah, in theory it might be a perfect album, but only for someone who enjoys incredibly grim things, and that's not me.

Tuomas, Friday, 1 February 2013 08:31 (eleven years ago) link

Sir Lucious is the only one of them that I own and it's awesome so I voted for it. Never heard of Destroyer

paolo, Friday, 1 February 2013 09:16 (eleven years ago) link

silent shout was my favourite record of the 00s so that's a hands down vote for me

nathey, Friday, 1 February 2013 09:17 (eleven years ago) link

Best to worst:

Kanye
Fever Ray
Miguel
Knife
Portishead
Big Boi
M.I.A.
LCD Soundystem
Destroyer

None of these are terrible although I haven't the Streets one in full, never liked anything Mike Skinner's done. The top four are all classics.

Gavin, Leeds, Friday, 1 February 2013 09:37 (eleven years ago) link

Sir Luscious Leftfoot IMO.

dog latin, Friday, 1 February 2013 10:03 (eleven years ago) link

Amazing to think the Streets made the count - inconceivable that something so Brit-centric could place so high today.

dog latin, Friday, 1 February 2013 10:04 (eleven years ago) link

Before I clicked on the thread title I was about to say Let England Shake, easy, but then I remembered the whole Kaputt unpleasantness. My memory had obviously conducted a recount.

Deafening silence (DL), Friday, 1 February 2013 10:21 (eleven years ago) link

I'm still reeling from all that.

dog latin, Friday, 1 February 2013 10:24 (eleven years ago) link

Matt DC, Friday, 1 February 2013 10:30 (eleven years ago) link

Fever Ray - Fever Ray
Portishead - Third
LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
The Knife - Silent Shout

That's a hell of a run, right there. Don't know much about the rest of them.

that futterwacken you like is back in style (how's life), Friday, 1 February 2013 10:32 (eleven years ago) link

If the 2011 poll had not been voted in by cloth-eared fools and Let England Shake had beaten Kaputt that might have taken my #1 vote, but I get more out of the Miguel album than anything else here by quite some distance. And I really like at least half of them.

Matt DC, Friday, 1 February 2013 10:33 (eleven years ago) link

iirc we claimed the moral victory for Let England Shake, either due to voting shenanigans or more first-place votes or just a very necessary deus ex machina

lex pretend, Friday, 1 February 2013 10:49 (eleven years ago) link

college dropout is actually really good matt

i keep seeing people who think i'm a kanye hater and i'm like no the only reason i hate on MBDTF is because i was a kanye FAN

Deafening silence (DL), Friday, 1 February 2013 10:50 (eleven years ago) link

I don't really like Kanye's voice, personality or on-record presence even when he's good so have never bothered to check out an entire album.

Matt DC, Friday, 1 February 2013 10:52 (eleven years ago) link

Destroyer is the only one of these I don't really love. It's between Sound of Silver and Third for me, it's a close call.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 1 February 2013 11:44 (eleven years ago) link

The only ones of these I can say I've really really enjoyed and played on several occasions are Big Boi, The Knife and The (LOL) Streets. The rest I've heard and enjoyed to differing extents, but I dunno.

dog latin, Friday, 1 February 2013 11:49 (eleven years ago) link

Could go Kanye, could go M.I.a or big boi. Have to think on this.

Raymond Cummings, Friday, 1 February 2013 11:50 (eleven years ago) link

I love LCD Soundsystem but never felt they released a consistently brilliant album in their career, Sound of Silver included. Always seems the highs are high and the lows are low with them.

― Kitchen Person, Friday, February 1, 2013 11:44 AM (1 hour ago)

Exactly how I feel. Sound of Silver hits so many of my sweet spots but Third is so high drama. The tours for both these records were two of my 00s highlights.

Deafening silence (DL), Friday, 1 February 2013 13:21 (eleven years ago) link

do all these people also hate roxy music and the psb?

kinda interesting that big boi was #1 here a few years ago and didn't even chart this year

obviously the album dropped really late and was pretty cruddy but still

Deafening silence (DL), Friday, 1 February 2013 13:56 (eleven years ago) link

I really dislike the Destroyer dude's voice, it reminds of some horrible slimy thing wheedling at me. The music has that awful cloying quality that you get from a lot of that sort of wide-eyed, brightly coloured post-Deserter's Songs North American indie. It feels plasticky but not in a good way. If it had just popped up at #9 I doubt I'd have cared but it beat the album I consider to be the best of the last five years at least, one whose emotional register Destroyer couldn't get anywhere near even if he wanted to.

Matt DC, Friday, 1 February 2013 14:08 (eleven years ago) link

If we'd held a poll for 2003, I imagine Speakerbox/The Love Below would've won. Or maybe Fever to Tell. Or Elephant? I dunno. 2003 was a pretty bountiful year.
Kish Kash would've won by a mile, based on the then ILM user base.

Jeff W, Friday, 1 February 2013 14:11 (eleven years ago) link

it's between Kaputt or Silent Shout

Jamie_ATP, Friday, 1 February 2013 14:13 (eleven years ago) link

xxp I can see how you feel about Destroyer dude's voice is a big thing in how you feel about that record, but I think the production sounds a lot more like (and consciously tries to evoke) say Avalon-era Roxy more than recent US indie. But then I really like that record. Obv Bejar should be shot on Lex's command, though.

For me Portishead > The Knife > Destroyer > Fever Ray > Kanye > the rest.

It's precisely because we like PSB and Roxy Music that we don't like Destroyer AFAIK.

dog latin, Friday, 1 February 2013 14:16 (eleven years ago) link

yes, because it's not possible to like all three, is it.

Neil S, Friday, 1 February 2013 14:18 (eleven years ago) link

also who is this "we"

Neil S, Friday, 1 February 2013 14:21 (eleven years ago) link

I don't like Roxy Music either to be fair.

Peak-era PSBs are unique, no one who tries to sound like them is ever any good.

Matt DC, Friday, 1 February 2013 14:21 (eleven years ago) link

fair enough. I've never particularly heard a PSB influence in Kaputt, but there we go.

You know what I mean.

Actually I don't hate Kaputt, but it def wasn't better than LES. Never mind.

dog latin, Friday, 1 February 2013 14:24 (eleven years ago) link

I like PSB, but I've never heard Roxy Music, so I don't know what this Kaputt is supposed to be like..? Is it like synth-pop?

Tuomas, Friday, 1 February 2013 14:28 (eleven years ago) link

Some shocking Roxy Music ignorance OTB

dog latin, Friday, 1 February 2013 14:30 (eleven years ago) link

Tuomas, Kaputt sounds like Neil Tennant singing on extended pure-pop songs that some say are labyrinthine and confessional, others say tedious and self-obsessed.

dog latin, Friday, 1 February 2013 14:32 (eleven years ago) link

The idea "The Streets = the British Chief Keef" just popped into my head

I know that's not really accurate but still, lol

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Friday, 1 February 2013 14:35 (eleven years ago) link

xp Except Bejar doesn't sound at all like Tennant. This is where I need DJP's vocal-technique expertise to explain why.

Deafening silence (DL), Friday, 1 February 2013 14:37 (eleven years ago) link

I don't get any PSB comparison to Destroyer at all, DL is correct, "Kaputt" sounds like Prefab Sprout
I love Prefab Sprout and love Destroyer but Kaputt is not even my fifth favourite Destroyer record

formed arses (flamboyant goon tie included), Friday, 1 February 2013 14:39 (eleven years ago) link

I haven't listened to much Destroyer but iirc I'd peg him as Tennantesque

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Friday, 1 February 2013 14:39 (eleven years ago) link

yeah never heard that either. I can see how people might think he sounds smarmy, something I don't think Tennant could ever be accused of, intonation and vocal styling aside.

Neil S, Friday, 1 February 2013 14:39 (eleven years ago) link

I don't really hear the PSBs in Kaputt either.

You can't swing a cat in London without hitting a British Chief Keef, half yr technically limited lumpen grime or road rap MCs would lay claim to that. I mean not to the extent that anyone buys their records but still...

Matt DC, Friday, 1 February 2013 14:40 (eleven years ago) link

i quite like the sound of arrows, who mirror their peak work pretty much

big boi really sticks out here, other than that these are all pretty much awesome (i know i listened to the streets once in lolcollege but have no memory of them. don't care tbh)

1 third
2 college dropout
3 kaputt
4 kaleidoscope dream
other 3 i like pretty equally

manti 乒乓 (k3vin k.), Friday, 1 February 2013 14:45 (eleven years ago) link

Tennant is who I hear and who Bejar appears to be drawing much of his influence from on Kaputt IMO. He might not have quite Tennant's range, but I don't think you have to be an expert on vocal-technique to hear it in his inflections. It appears to be a very deliberate aping of Tennant's laryngeal English style. Even that "Sounds, Smash Hits, Melody Maker, NME" line not only sounds like Tennant in terms of tone and accent, but it also parodies the meta-pop tradition that PSB were good at (not to mention Tennant's association with Smash Hits itself). I can't remember if he sang like this on previous records or not?

dog latin, Friday, 1 February 2013 14:48 (eleven years ago) link

i would be down for a 2003 poll, amazing year for music. didn't trap muzik come out in 03? that's my number 1

manti 乒乓 (k3vin k.), Friday, 1 February 2013 14:53 (eleven years ago) link

Doing a 2003 poll now would feel wrong, these things need to be contemporary, not just because the voter demographic has changed markedly.

Matt DC, Friday, 1 February 2013 14:55 (eleven years ago) link

ha, welcome interstate managers <3

nathey, Friday, 1 February 2013 14:56 (eleven years ago) link

Lets do the 10th anniversary of 2003 poll!

Can we, uh, give it a month or so, though? I think a bunch of us will wanna relisten to a bunch of things, plus I think a good number of us (just me? ok.) might be suffering from a bit of poll exhaustion. Either way, participation may be greater if there's some time to get it together.

Bejar has more bass in his voice than Tennant and phonates more, but there is a strong latter-era-PSB flavor to the way he is singing on "Chinatown"

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Friday, 1 February 2013 15:01 (eleven years ago) link

I feel like I should vote for Kaputt just because it gets dumped on so much. I listened to "Blue Eyes" on the way home from work yesterday and it's still great!

Probably the album I've listened to the most on here is Arular.

Moodles, Friday, 1 February 2013 15:05 (eleven years ago) link

Definitely a strong Al Stewart vibe with Destroyer.

Moodles, Friday, 1 February 2013 15:06 (eleven years ago) link

Arular, but that's really a placeholder for the obviously-robbed Kala. In any case, it's the only one of the 10 that I really love. Like/respect many of the others.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Friday, 1 February 2013 15:06 (eleven years ago) link

xp Ok, maybe it's 50% Tennant and 50% something else that I can't stand. I think I resent this record exactly because it was pitched to me as PSBs + Avalon Roxy, which sounded fantastic, and then it wasn't that at all. But I'll stop dumping on it now.

Deafening silence (DL), Friday, 1 February 2013 15:12 (eleven years ago) link

The 'childlike wonderment' thing comes from a recent Stool Pigeon article about music journo cliches to mean 'sounds like animal collective'. Destroyer doesn't sound like Animal Collective. Neither does he sound drunk, apart from in a slightly uncomfortable avuncular way perhaps.

Kaputt will win this in a landslide. Surely I'm not the only one who saw the options, went 'hm, tough one', read the thread and voted for Destroyer out of spite.

Our works in stone, in paint, in print, are spared, some of them, for a few decades or a millennium or two, but everything must finally fall in war, or wear away into the ultimate and universal ash - the triumphs, the frauds, the treasures and the fakes. A fact of life: we're going to die. "Be of good heart," cry the dead artists out of the living past. "Our songs will all be silenced. Except for Kaputt by Destoyer, in all likelihood."

christmas candy bar (al leong), Thursday, 7 February 2013 00:29 (eleven years ago) link

This is partly about audience splits I think - I'm betting that a large segment of voters were split not just between Silent Shout and Fever Ray but also those and Third, whereas as a general rule I suspect the kind of voter who would put Kaputt first was not troubled by the lure of any other option.

Oh this is great. Kaputt beat Fever Ray and Silent Shout combined. Haha. Probably a few spite-voters, then.

Btw I just heard about this book about life behind german lines in WW2 called Kaputt. Do you guys think the name of the record has anything to do with that? It would really bring something to the record, I think, this sense of the living in this world gone completely wrong.

think we probably should run this vote on a weekly basis really. we're just not finding a clear mean accuracy as regards our views on albums of the last decade.

Ballboy to Afghanistan (LocalGarda), Thursday, 7 February 2013 09:34 (eleven years ago) link

Separate up-or-down polls on each of the albums should give us more visibility into what's going on "in there". Weekly, I agree.
