So then. Kiwi garage RAWKS! - OR - CELEBRATEYOFATHAWHENHESLEEPINWIYOSISTAANDYOBRUTHAANDYOMUTHA - OR - Whatever happened to The Beautiful South?

Datsuns sound like Kulashaker, but not as good (and they were shit).

80's matchbox people sound like about 7 or 8 different bands, all of them rubbish.

Haven't heard the Datsuns yet, but 80sMBLD are one of my secret guilty pleasures. With all the hype, I so WANTED to hate them. But they're actually really entertaining in a sort of "Cramps played at the wrong speed" sort of way.

They're really retrofetishistic, and they're not going to save anything or anyone, but they are a great deal of fun live. Which is what I look for in a rock show, really.

the datsuns are a punk rock band - that's about it, loud, crazy, nothing boundary breaking but if you like it loud'n'proud, the datsuns are for you...that is why it's funny how the nme were trying to describe them - they couldnt - it's basically something that could have come out of the sst scene of the early eighties...all the songs sound the same, but it's a good song.

d4 are cool. if you love the clash, which i do, live, this has all the energy of joe strummer and co. (groans from the indie kids)....aand they are on a mandate of playing 200 gigs a year, so the rock and roll flows through the shows like a disease.

You know, I hate it when bands TRY to make me adore them.

As I've been walking around London, they've been FOLLOWING me, staring out of their posters, following me with their eyes, begging me "Come on, look at us! We're dirty! We haven't bathed or washed our hair since 1997! You know you want to let us paint your toenails!!! Please?!?!?"

And I've been ignoring them, becuase you know, life is too short to have boys begging for your attention all of the time, I can't adore EVERYONE, or else I might actually pay attention to The Calling by mistake or something.

But they're trying REALLY HARD. They've started following me into stores, and blasting AC/TweeC riffs at me when I'm trying to browse, and popping up in magazines when I'm trying to concentrate on hating the music press and wondering if Julian or Courtney have bigger spare tires.

And I think that I might have to soon accept the fact that I actually quite like the Datsuns, as well. Somebody help me. Or else just shoot me and put me out of my misery.

bang bang yer dead.

; - )

(that's alright - i've had the official worse day today)

doom-e, Monday, 7 October 2002 19:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh, I'm sorry! I actually had a good day for the first time, in well, a long time today! I got a job! I can pay rent again!

Hence, what I was doing in Virgin, trying to find bands to blow my rent money on when I ever get paid...

Been avoiding this... but I like that 80s Matchbox B-Line Disaster "Celebrate Your Mother" track. Probably because it does remind me of the Cramps, X, Gun Club, and Birthday Party (am I forgetting anything else?). Anyway, I think its a pretty menacing yet catchy tune, and I'm glad that retro-rock is starting to move into the '80s. The Datsuns, however... oh boy. They are dull as dish water. AC/DC sounds like sex. The Datsuns sound like masturbation.

Aaron W., Monday, 7 October 2002 19:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

the datsuns sound like a shitty pearl jam type band that discovered "garage" & "punk" last week. & hey i just found out that is in fact the case (except it was maybe more like 2 weeks ago)

oi! Kate! Enough cross-posting already...*ducks*

AC/DC sounds like sex. The Datsuns sound like masturbation.

This is PRECISELY why I like them. What do dirty teenage rock boys REALLY know more about, sex or masturbation? So clearly they're better at masturbation.

oh god somebody kill the datsuns please!! the world and hamilton luv them, the rest of new zealand hates them. theres a million bands like that in every town and they bore me to fukkin death.

EARLY-90S MAN (Enrique), Monday, 25 September 2006 12:26 (seventeen years ago) link

i'd go with 80s matchbox.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Monday, 25 September 2006 13:42 (seventeen years ago) link

80s Matchbox wins, by a mile. When will their 3rd album come?

zeus (zeus), Monday, 25 September 2006 17:33 (seventeen years ago) link

They split up a while back.

LC (Damian), Monday, 25 September 2006 19:06 (seventeen years ago) link

80s Matchbox were OK, The Royal Society is a pretty good album. The best thing I could say about the Datsuns is they are better than Jet.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Monday, 25 September 2006 19:12 (seventeen years ago) link

I can't stand the Datsuns and wanted to hate 80s Matchbox since they were obvious NME fodder. But despite this I love 80s Matchbox, Celebrate Your Mother is great, but Psychosis Safari is even better! ;o) Is their follow up album any good?

Rombald (rombald), Monday, 25 September 2006 19:17 (seventeen years ago) link

They split up a while back.

-- LC (damiansuzuk...), September 25th, 2006.

They are currently working on new material and attempting to find a new record deal, after the collapse of the No Death record label. Recently the band have released some demos from their new album, these can be found on their myspace page[1] - Wikipedia.

zeus (zeus), Monday, 25 September 2006 20:07 (seventeen years ago) link

They also played a gig in Leeds last month, so they're around in some form...

Rombald (rombald), Monday, 25 September 2006 21:17 (seventeen years ago) link

four years pass...

Hey there's a new Eighties Matchbox album.

Borbotemungus or something like that. (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 1 November 2010 10:54 (thirteen years ago) link

Didn't The Horrors buy them out, lock stock and barrel?

I'd be happy if Eighties Matchbox came back because they were the far superior band.
