A yearly tradition continues and all is well with the world. Metal Reigns Supreme.

Viceroy, Tuesday, 24 December 2013 23:03 (ten years ago) link

Anyone remotely interested in Funeral Doom, btw, needs to check out that Altaar album.

Viceroy, Tuesday, 24 December 2013 23:15 (ten years ago) link

The album list on this thread is the exact same spelling, formatting, etc. as the spreadsheet, right? So I can copy and paste from that just as easy?

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 25 December 2013 00:04 (ten years ago) link

And we don't include numbers or anything else. Just the artist & title. Is it descending or ascending order? I can't remember from last year.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 25 December 2013 00:05 (ten years ago) link

Put your #1 at the top and work your way down. No numbers.

freemen (on the) space (seandalai), Wednesday, 25 December 2013 00:24 (ten years ago) link

Thanks. I need reminders each year.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 25 December 2013 00:42 (ten years ago) link

yeah i copied it from the spreadsheet

gman59, Wednesday, 25 December 2013 08:18 (ten years ago) link

Again Stara Rzeka is doubled, with it misspelled the first timr

pfunky boyster (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 25 December 2013 08:23 (ten years ago) link

Also I'm having major pangs of regret for not nominating Spider Kitten

pfunky boyster (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 25 December 2013 08:24 (ten years ago) link

The Fall Of Every Season is in twice, once as "A Fall Of Every season"

Siegbran, Wednesday, 25 December 2013 12:05 (ten years ago) link

A bumper year for Quebecois "post/atmospheric/folk" black metal by the way: fantastic albums by Gris, Csejthe, Sombres Forêts, Neige Éternelle, Monarque.

Siegbran, Wednesday, 25 December 2013 12:17 (ten years ago) link

i'm really digging the ghost bc album

also feeling like trying to listen to every nom'd album is a fool's errand

Mordy , Thursday, 26 December 2013 01:03 (ten years ago) link

I thought I got my last few nominations in in plenty of time *pouts*

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Thursday, 26 December 2013 09:44 (ten years ago) link

Listening to the Tracks playlist is quite nice tho, or the album playlist on shuffle.

Siegbran, Thursday, 26 December 2013 11:24 (ten years ago) link

i think only about 3 people subscribed to the tracks playlist since i started it. If people dont vote tracks then siegbrans nsbm graveland track might win the poll lol

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 26 December 2013 12:02 (ten years ago) link

i didn't nominate it for the poll.

Siegbran, Thursday, 26 December 2013 13:12 (ten years ago) link

I personally wasn't interested in nominating individual tracks.. I don't know if others feel the same way...

SeanWayne, Thursday, 26 December 2013 18:06 (ten years ago) link

the SubRosa album is just not grabbing me.. I've tried several times to give it a go and its just not doing anything for me. I saw em live and though thought they were great, but on record its ____ ? i don't know.

SeanWayne, Thursday, 26 December 2013 18:34 (ten years ago) link

I'm a bit puzzled by all the praise too, it's not a bad record in any way and it's pleasant to listen to but there's nothing on it that really stands out.

Siegbran, Thursday, 26 December 2013 20:15 (ten years ago) link

The lyrics stand out. "Affliction" is the strongest anger I've heard all year.

jmm, Thursday, 26 December 2013 20:29 (ten years ago) link

anger/sadness/confusion, I should say

jmm, Thursday, 26 December 2013 20:32 (ten years ago) link

anyone hear the clandestine blaze from this year? meant to listen and nominate but didn't get to it. I like the cover.

i love the ghost bc album.

there.

i have broken my metal thread cherry.

however, i would never class ghost bc as metal.

Anyone even remotely into death metal needs to listen to the Beyond record. It's streaming here: http://ironboneheadproductions.bandcamp.com/album/beyond-fatal-power-of-death

Rock You like a Hamstercane (J3ff T.), Monday, 30 December 2013 23:43 (ten years ago) link

Iron Bonehead productions?!? that is terrible name.. This will be one of those things where the name of something kills it before I give a chance.. lol!

SeanWayne, Tuesday, 31 December 2013 03:33 (ten years ago) link

That's the label. Who cares what the label's called?

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 31 December 2013 03:49 (ten years ago) link

i voted

Mordy , Tuesday, 31 December 2013 18:38 (ten years ago) link

I question the judgement of a band that signs to a label with that name.. lol! I'm have kidding, of course

SeanWayne, Tuesday, 31 December 2013 18:46 (ten years ago) link

man no bands are gonna sign to my label "Fart Blast Wreck-hers"

Viceroy, Tuesday, 31 December 2013 23:57 (ten years ago) link

LOL!!!!!!!
Hellbeard is ready to sign! lol

SeanWayne, Wednesday, 1 January 2014 00:25 (ten years ago) link

btw I'm adding more nommed albums to the album playlist so that it is more complete.

Viceroy, Wednesday, 1 January 2014 02:12 (ten years ago) link

Lol yes, can I suggest the Spider Kitten album, Cougar Club? Decent a
doom with atmosphere and some alt rock leanings (and some rad Alice in Chains harmonies)

only ten? seems low. is that normal?

SeanWayne, Thursday, 2 January 2014 16:30 (ten years ago) link

it's rather low for metal poll, yeah, but hopefully it will flood in once everyones back to work/college.

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 2 January 2014 16:47 (ten years ago) link

When you vote please post here to say so. So I can check it went through ok.

Siegbran, Friday, 3 January 2014 14:39 (ten years ago) link

thanks!

btw guys Campaigning really does work so please go for it. Remember jeff got some dodgy stuff in a few years back just by campaigning!
Siegbran has the right idea.

So discuss any of the albums nominated (or tracks) in here!

second the avatarium album.

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 3 January 2014 21:47 (ten years ago) link

Yeah Avatarium is pretty great... I'm liking Brimstone Coven a lot too!

Viceroy, Saturday, 4 January 2014 01:25 (ten years ago) link

That Batillus record, Concrete Sustain was my number one. Sludgey, doomy goodness with an industrial edge. Just what the genre needs, I think. Its innovated and doesn't feel stiff like most industrial stuff can get.

I only have one album I care about campaigning for:

Mordy , Saturday, 4 January 2014 03:16 (ten years ago) link

For what it's worth, I think the reason that the Sahg has been mostly overlooked is because it doesn't come out in the states until February.

J3ff T., Saturday, 4 January 2014 21:07 (ten years ago) link

Also, you guys need to listen to the Germ album – especially those of you who think that the Deafheaven is boring. Streaming here: http://www.decibelmagazine.com/featured/streaming-germs-grief/

J3ff T., Saturday, 4 January 2014 21:09 (ten years ago) link

Germ >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Deafheaven

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 4 January 2014 21:09 (ten years ago) link

Tried to click the "favorite" button BUT THERE ISN'T ONE

J3ff T., Saturday, 4 January 2014 21:16 (ten years ago) link

you clicked the favorite button in my heart.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 4 January 2014 21:17 (ten years ago) link

Cool, just what I'm looking for. I've been wanting to hear more blackened post-punk sounds since getting into the Vaura album. Is there much other stuff in this vein out there?

jmm, Saturday, 4 January 2014 21:32 (ten years ago) link

xp Don't see how it matters these days, as the Sahg is available digitally worldwide via Spotify, iTunes, Amazon, GooglePlay, etc. III never even had a U.S. release. What label is putting it out? Hope that means they'll actually tour the U.S.

Fastnbulbous, Saturday, 4 January 2014 22:05 (ten years ago) link

and its not like the rolling promo crew dont get their promos months earlier anyway

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Saturday, 4 January 2014 22:51 (ten years ago) link

i listened to germ with high expectations, it was wack

j., Saturday, 4 January 2014 23:04 (ten years ago) link

It matters if the people that make the lists (critics) don't get the album until well into the next year – most writers probably won't be getting it until February unless they're doing a review like I am. And if they don't get the album as a promo, they usually means that they don't realize that it exists. Just kind of how works. Writers often get the album only several weeks ahead of the release date, not months.

Also, J, have you considered that the wackness lies with you and not Germ?

J3ff T., Sunday, 5 January 2014 00:27 (ten years ago) link

hypothesis considered and REJECTED

j., Sunday, 5 January 2014 02:02 (ten years ago) link

Not feeling that Germ.. I'm thinking this is gonna be the new trend though. A former drum student of my sent me a link a few months ago doing something similar-he didn't get into the new wave up tempos, but the vibe was very close. One man bands, non performance more than likely, dark, none blast beat black metal, that has a dark wave feel.. I think this will be a little more appealing to a lot of folks as well. It don't do shit for me, but whatevs..

SeanWayne, Sunday, 5 January 2014 03:07 (ten years ago) link

I'm stunned right now at how good the Bölzer EP is. Such a huge sound and so expressive.

jmm, Sunday, 5 January 2014 04:03 (ten years ago) link

Entranced by the Wolfshook, holy shit. That's one of the hugest opening riffs I've ever heard.

jmm, Sunday, 5 January 2014 04:36 (ten years ago) link

anybody with passing interest in space rock or stoner rock should probably spend sixty minutes of their lives checking out this album from the Cosmic Dead. It's p far out, but I dug it.

i apologize in advance for not voting in this but no lie, i have not listened to a single new album this year

Is this going to be the end of ILM metal polls? That would be too bad cuz I always felt the results were by far the best, most well-rounded of all the metal polls. One list to rule them all \m/

However, if Deafheaven win this year I take that back, cuz seriously, they can suckit ;)

Fastnbulbous, Monday, 6 January 2014 17:44 (ten years ago) link

as I posted on the thread drugs a money bumped
2010 had 80 ballots
2011 had 74 ballots
2012 under new management there was 51 ballots

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 6 January 2014 17:46 (ten years ago) link

BTW I had no access to the spreadsheet for tracks, and did not volunteer for that nonsense. I can barely keep track of the hundreds and hundreds of albums. I will vote for tracks from what's available though.

Fastnbulbous, Monday, 6 January 2014 17:47 (ten years ago) link

If we dont have enough votes for a rollout it will probably be just a list in one go of the top 10 or so. so please vote!

I could pretty easily come up with the minimum 5 albums from the fairly comprehensive album list, but scanning that track list, there are only 2 songs I recognize. Not sure if I'll have enough time to listen through the rest before Friday. Is the tracks ballot required?

o. nate, Monday, 6 January 2014 20:55 (ten years ago) link

no its voluntary. there is a playlist on spotify tho

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 6 January 2014 21:10 (ten years ago) link

Okay, thanks. I'll try to listen to it before Friday.

o. nate, Monday, 6 January 2014 21:12 (ten years ago) link

if someone gives me the list of tracks noms missed i will ask seandalai to add them to the document. as we dont have many ballots in it wont matter PLUS anyone can resubmit their vote

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 6 January 2014 21:16 (ten years ago) link

To switch gears to campaigning for a bit, I think more people should be talking about the Obliteration album, "Black Death Horizon". I'm not an expert on metal sub-genres. This seems vaguely death-metal though with a distinct sound of their own, especially the high-pitched yelped vocals which are great. Great raw and loose sound.

o. nate, Monday, 6 January 2014 21:20 (ten years ago) link

and if anyone wishes to resubmit a tracks ballot then they can. We will accept the last ballot from everyone so dont worry if you have voted before.
Also anyone who voted for albums and not tracks can still send in a tracks ballot.

Maybe you're not getting the ballots in cuz of the Google password needed to see the spread sheet.. Maybe its turned some folks off. idk. I could gives a fuck about a spreadsheet. I went analog and wrote my shit down with a pen and paper first.. lol! remember those?!?

Chucked my virgin ballot into the volcano.

Death Angel is listed as Dark Angel, btw. Being much more a fan of the latter than the former, I went into a momentary google tizzy.

Also, it didn't make my top ten, but if anyone has been displeased with Satyricon since Volcano and wishes to find a suitable taker upper of that sound, Sonic Reign's Monument in Black is a stormer. So good are they that I excuse the borderline plagiarism of that other band's "Fuel for Hatred" and "Possessed" in this tune:

Argus - Beyond The Martyrs

http://youtu.be/KJHCwRYBFrY

Fastnbulbous, Wednesday, 8 January 2014 18:34 (ten years ago) link

Hailing from the fertile metallic landscapes of Pennsylvania, Argus is releasing their third and best album on the Italian metal label that was founded in 2003, and was once the home of Slough Feg and other like minded bands. Unlike Argus’ first two consistently strong albums, doom is less of a factor on Beyond The Martyrs, emphasizing their twin guitar interplay, and mixing in the epic with the darkness. The band were named from a vision Eric Johnson had of Argus Panoptes, the mythological primordial giant with a hundred eyes. Several bands have taken up that name, but this is the one most worthy of it.

I realize jmm's earlier comment may have been in jest, but I'm so tired of seeing "Deafheaven" and "hipster" in the same sentence. I'm an old-school metal head who's been listening to heavy music for 25 years (nothing hipster about me) -- and I LOVE Deafheaven. Is it just because the singer's handsome? Is it because they seem to have a sense of humor in their personal lives? Or do folks still perhaps equate popularity with lack of integrity/lack of chops? If you don't like them, whatever, but for God's sake let's all stop with the term "hipster."

Skrot Montague, Thursday, 9 January 2014 21:55 (ten years ago) link

Love Bolzer and In Solitude too btw!

Skrot Montague, Thursday, 9 January 2014 21:59 (ten years ago) link

I think its the fact they appeared on so many non-metal lists as well as metal lists, aren't on a metal label, dont look like metallers as much as they dont like the music after all theres plenty of music people dont like but never talk about.

You never hear anyone slagging off the death metal band Farting Dudes In Sweatpants and they're really bad.

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 9 January 2014 22:06 (ten years ago) link

I really think it was the tracks thing, and the google password thing to see the spread sheet that threw people off.. And I guess there were some that didn't want to do both (tracks and albums) and for a time there were no option to do only one.. Just an observation, I could be wrong

SeanWayne, Friday, 10 January 2014 03:25 (ten years ago) link

we got more votes after the brief time it required both in the ballot than before hahaha .
Nobody else has mentioned google password plus that was irrelevant as the noms are at the top of this thread.

Probably the fact most people were not back to work this week was why it was slow and plus clearly a lot of ilxors have quit over the years too.

Next year either the voting date gets pushed back a week to give 2 weeks of voting (not possible if big ilm poll keeps the same dates) while everyones at work or we start voting early in december and rollout the results the mon-fri before xmas hols.

I told you, dude – people are lazy and wait until the last minute. It's human nature.

J3ff T., Friday, 10 January 2014 19:20 (ten years ago) link

usually i start album countdown as soon as i get the results after (vote) closing time. But with this year us trying a tracks poll I dunno whether to do that first or just start albums tonight and start tracks on monday when everyones back to work (it wont be a particularly long rollout.

Also I was going to do it on just the one results thread but seanwayne thinks it would be better on its own thread.

Another thought was leave tracks poll to the last few days of albums rollout and count it down simultaneously with the albums.

so anyone got any thoughts on it?

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 10 January 2014 19:23 (ten years ago) link

j3ff might be right. Maybe polls should just have one week of voting in future. People could cram listening in during extended nominations instead.

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 10 January 2014 19:24 (ten years ago) link

I guess it depends on how many tracks ballots come in and how long that rollout would be, but it seems like a minor feature of the metal poll and could probably kick off the thread that would house both polls' results.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 10 January 2014 19:25 (ten years ago) link

go for it. And thanks for the shorter total rollout of tracks.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 10 January 2014 19:40 (ten years ago) link

do it!

tracks poll was always just a wee bit of fun. Hoped that it might attract non-partisans who might be more willing to check out standout tracks, that might then lead to albums being checked out.

Hopefully those who will follow tracks poll will be able to real time comments on the songs and will then hang around for albums.

plus I love it when in previous polls emil.y and others live-blogged thoughts on songs they didnt know.

Plus it can prove to doubters than metal has songs that do stand out. (also got no idea what the top 25 will be like.)

last 3 hours to vote..

just voted in the albums poll

Still trying to listen through the tracks spotify playlist. I may have to give up and just submit an albums-only ballot, though I have discovered lots of cool stuff on the playlist (Oranssi Pazuzu and Stara Rzeka come to mind).

2 HOURS LEFT TO VOTE

it is done

tench and pike, scaup and snipe (NickB), Friday, 10 January 2014 22:01 (ten years ago) link

haha i forgot there is 2 nick b's. one has voted for years in metal poll but we used to only take email addys not ilx names. So seandalai its 2 different people not a revote.

i think both nicks need to fight it out on dragons holding swords or something.

i am not very metal, i will be the one riding into battle on a duck

important question, can somebody help?

what is my ILE username? is it "Beatrix Kiddo" or "Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings)"?

Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 10 January 2014 22:31 (ten years ago) link

preparing to submit my ballot, don't wanna mess this up

Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 10 January 2014 22:31 (ten years ago) link

Beatrix Kiddo

but it hardly matters as its just so we know a real person is voting ie no socks or lady gaga fanclub

its not just the NSA who knows who you are!

Anyway late voters can make a huge difference not only voting albums into the countdown, or into the top 10 or changing the order of the top 20buy ALSO decide #1. One year j3ffs last min vote changed the top 3.

so with ONE HOUR LEFT TO GO PLEASE VOTE

After asking some friends/ilx lurkers to vote and all of you regular ilxors joining in I think we have 55 album voters. But time for more!
Not had a ballot from doran/phil or chuck yet!

or jjjusten or m@tt

Considering this:

i apologize in advance for not voting in this but no lie, i have not listened to a single new album this year

I wouldn't expect a ballot from him.
