Dr. Bronner's Peppermint or Almond for body, hair, and shaving (and laundry). Sea sponge in the shower. Recyclable toothbrush w/ Arm & Hammer toothpaste. Degree deodorant (tried the Tom's, love it's scentlessness and lack of itch, but lasts for approx. 12 seconds). Two blade razors.
I basically get pissed off if I smell like ANYTHING, whether it's b.o. or cologne or shampoo or whatever. Except smoke, that's pretty unavoidable.

face: dr bronner's unscented liquid or aveda all-sensitive cleanser, depending on season, etc.; aveda anti-acne salicylic acid pad thing; clyndamycin liquid stuff (yeah the kind with alcohol - i think my skin is now addicted to this :/ ugh, but it works pretty well, mostly needed in summer); spritz of aveda all sens toner; a v v small amt of aveda all-sens moisturizer. it is a SYSTEM.
body: dr bronner's unscented or cetaphil bar soap; dove unscented antiperspirant (wish i could go without but i am like all about sweating and even tho i don't nec smell 'bad' i think it wld only work if i could have a shower or swim in the middle of the day. which i am going to start doing b/c the outdoor pool near my work just reopened! so i will just smell like chlorine instead); 3-blade razor & above soap
hair: aveda sap moss shampoo & conditioner; phyto defrissant or aveda anti-frizz or john freida serum, i don't know, it changes. can't really tolerate much more in the way of product.
nails: emery boards, clippers, if time/awareness that nicole by opi polish in neon colours or clear
teeeth: oral b satin floss (bought generic version last time and while many generic products are just fine, this is far less ok); arm & hammer enamel power super power toothpaste (hippie stuff wasn't cutting it for me); salt water rinse and/or blue listerine make-up: usually dior skin foundation w/ spf 15 or clinque almost makeup spf 15; prescriptives camouflage cream; clinique stay-matte powder; clinque naturally glossy mascara; 100% lanolin for lips; aveda lipstick or burt's bees tint or dior lipstick; eyebrow tweezers & brush; if going out or just feel like it, stuff like mac brown eyeliner, whatever clinque free eyeshadow samples i have; all blush = breakouts. all pretty neutral and unexciting i guess but yknow
the whole massive detail of all this makes me wonder more and more if i have some kind of body dysmorphia. but then i think that prob 60%+ of the population must then have some level of it too. i wld like to blame the city living for skin issues even tho i love living in cities but that can't be all to blame. it is my own personal relationship with the world's microbes and the microbes they are everywhere

cannot use cetaphil cleanser even tho all derm docs push it bell, watch out with the glycolic stuff - it might work at first and then you can become super sensitized to it. have you tried using the dr bronner's baby/sensitive/unscented on your face? has it worked for you? seems to work better than almost all face cleansers or soaps i've tried, for me

rrrobyn, I'd want a regular towel for a post-bike sweat-blotter myself. The hemp ones definitely soak up sweat as well as oiliness, but are sort of small and thin so you might need a couple.
I'm thinking of getting Mr. Jaq a bunch of linen handkerchiefs, for summer forehead sweat-n-shine-blotting purposes.
― Jaq, Monday, 30 June 2008 21:31 (sixteen years ago) link
yeah my only thing with handkerchiefs and towels is they quickly become microbe or okay at least mildew breeding grounds. which means i'd need a new one everyday. i use a dif cotton pad in my face powder every day b/c of this too. i mean, not that i'm going around in kleenex boxes instead of shoes but this is truth and it is not good for my skin

― sunny successor, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 13:55 (sixteen years ago) link
I don't know - it's hard to find lard or tallow based soap over here anymore. Everything's vegetable oil-based or for detergents there are some that are petroleum-based.
― Jaq, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 13:59 (sixteen years ago) link
Glycerin. Glycerol. A byproduct of soap manufacture (normally uses animal fat). In cosmetics, foods, mouthwashes, chewing gum, toothpastes, soaps, ointments, medicines, lubricants, transmission and brake fluid, and plastics. Derivatives: Glycerides, Glyceryls, Glycreth-26, Polyglycerol. Alternatives: vegetable glycerin—a byproduct of vegetable oil soap. Derivatives of seaweed, petroleum. http://www.happycow.net/health-animal-ingredients.html
it is pretty fucked up considering there are alternative sources for almost all of these xposts
― rrrobyn, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 14:01 (sixteen years ago) link
Most of it is made from a petrochemical byproduct nowadays though. Just like sugar is no longer fined using charcoal made from animal bones, technology has moved on. You get glycerin when you make biodiesel, or in any saponification process.
― Jaq, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 14:04 (sixteen years ago) link
yeah there are a lot of soaps in the health food stores that are glycerin based and say the above
though then there's also the animal testing issue which okay i have too much work to do to get into this argument and i know we've done it already on multiple other threads but yeah it is a concern of mine and it is overwhelming
