SONIC YOUTH

So Sonic Youth are apparently playing here, unless that jackass Livvie's made it up. H and E are coming up, so's Livvie herself, is anyone else? Anton/Di/Duane maybe? It's all going to be very odd. I wonder if Thurston'll remember even slightly.

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Friday, 26 March 2004 11:54 (twenty years ago) link

Remember ME, obv. We talked about Sparks and Dave Pegg's sister's record and I took a couple of photos of him, I consider us close friends

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Friday, 26 March 2004 11:57 (twenty years ago) link

Hey HE'S tall, maybe after you introduce us I should try and get w/ him. I'm hotter than Kim by far.

Livvie (Livvie), Friday, 26 March 2004 11:58 (twenty years ago) link

Also wow yeah everyone should come! This gig will be overwhelming.

Livvie (Livvie), Friday, 26 March 2004 14:10 (twenty years ago) link

YOU PEP!

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Friday, 26 March 2004 16:32 (twenty years ago) link

im tempted esp since last time was marred by screaming foo fighters fans in singlets saying "I Love U Dave"

ducklingmonster, Friday, 26 March 2004 21:54 (twenty years ago) link

i have some questions. firstly, when is it? secondly, are they still doing that noise thing? thirdly, is steve shelley still their drummer? this will help me determine if i want to see them. yeah yeah i know, i'm letting my impure thoughts about steve shelley influence this decision. shame on me.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Saturday, 27 March 2004 03:11 (twenty years ago) link

June 26, according to their website, so I'll be there with balls on!

Minty (Minty), Saturday, 27 March 2004 03:19 (twenty years ago) link

hey the 5,6,7,8's in may too! somebody please give me more details, i can't find anything about it on the net.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Saturday, 27 March 2004 03:28 (twenty years ago) link

Go to the Ticketek website. 26th June at the St James, round $65. J. Mascis is supporting. It depends what you mean by "that noise thing", they're promoting their new album which isn't out yet. Yes Steve Shelley IS still their drummer. You should really go Di, it'd be nice to see you again!

Livvie (Livvie), Saturday, 27 March 2004 09:27 (twenty years ago) link

don't you mean bells?

cuspidorian (cuspidorian), Monday, 29 March 2004 02:53 (twenty years ago) link

You've met Anton, right?

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Monday, 29 March 2004 10:58 (twenty years ago) link

okay, I admit to his preeminent manliness

cuspidorian (cuspidorian), Monday, 29 March 2004 21:19 (twenty years ago) link

About time, too.

Minty (Minty), Monday, 29 March 2004 22:50 (twenty years ago) link

i wanna get candy flipped & dance up front but I ph34r the seating arrangements, moshpit grunge-hangover kids, guitar geeks & nu-deadheads.

etc, Tuesday, 30 March 2004 03:24 (twenty years ago) link

The weekend Herald had a mention of this gig in its time-out section, so i guess that makes it official.

I couldn't find the ad for Toots and the Maytalls next month, anyone know if it's [1] still on [2] sold out and/or [3] horrendously expensive?

petra jane (petra jane), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 05:00 (twenty years ago) link

Akl has "nu-deadheads"?
did/does it have "deadheads"?

cuspidorian (cuspidorian), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 05:12 (twenty years ago) link

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 09:33 (twenty years ago) link

I only moshed coz I've got crap eyesight & it was the only way I could get close enough to the stage to see them! NOT MY WAR.

nu-deadheads = dubheads?

etc, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 03:55 (twenty years ago) link

No! you must clear up my confusion! confusion is sex.
don't worry this thread was already in the pits as soon as thurston lust came into it.
should I wear a Van Dyke Parks tee shirt so I can bag Jim?

cuspidorian (cuspidorian), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 06:06 (twenty years ago) link

shit i thought you said "bang jim". you're such a lust fascist, spectra.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 07:02 (twenty years ago) link

(please don't think cos i said that i am thurston for moore cos i am not!!)

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 07:03 (twenty years ago) link

I'm not THAT into Thurston (or any of SY), his perpetual youth thing is a bit creepy. Hey I know like 3 more people who're going to be there now, that makes like 25 people I know who'll possibly be at this gig.

Livvie (Livvie), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 09:40 (twenty years ago) link

wow, I think that's about how many for me too!
I might've misused "bag" 'cause I thought it might be a "sleep with"/"score" euphemism but I think "to bag someone" is to criticise them, which ain't what I meant...I meant share my sleeping bag.
Anyone know what they're sposed to be like live these days, I'm too lazy to look it up...maybe this is where I should give (non-groupie) props to Lee R. I need to do some more SY "research" (listening) as I know less than most people I know. I really hope they do the closer off Murray Street, Sympathy for the Strawberry!
ps. Di did you get a lollipop from me via M Darcy?

cuspidorian (cuspidorian), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 11:08 (twenty years ago) link

Mr Mime, how did the photos of Thurston turn out? Were you in them too?

cuspidorian (cuspidorian), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 11:20 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah non-groupie-wise Lee is amazing. I know no recent SY past Washing Machine - I'm best on the BMR/EVOL/Sister mid-eighties period but I don't know how much of that they'll play. One of the people I know who's going saw them live in NYC and said they were amazing - I don't know him well enough to trust his taste but that's something I suppose. I think you used "bag" correctly (it means both "score" and criticise as far as I know) - it's a bit less explicit than "bang", is all.

Livvie (Livvie), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 11:24 (twenty years ago) link

I think "bag" as "criticise" depends on you being kinda British. Petra I have no real KNOWLEDGE of it but I'd be surprised if it was under $80 or so, the Burning Spear thing, sorry I could've seen yesterday pretty easily but forgot. The photos came out GREAT, I took two cos I was worried one wouldn't work, and I took them so I'm not in them (I'm not THAT wily/good a photographer), a couple of old/ex friends are in them tho. They kept moving around to be sure and be in the shot, fucked the lightreading up a lot. Poor good patient Thurston.

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 14:00 (twenty years ago) link

Their new album is entitled "Sonic Nurse". Me and E. and Livvie had already heard a track off it on the Erase Errata split 7", and it's good.

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 14:01 (twenty years ago) link

Hey dmonster I was at that show too, are you SHOCKED? I looked at my shoes a LOT during the Foo Fighters set, they were really v poor. Featured (ACCORDING TO HIM) Dave Grohl's first (live obv he played everything on that first FF record) appearance on drums since Nirvana! Woah! It was kinda cool, really. Do you remember much about their performance? For some reason I remember it a lot better than SY's. People moshed to "Tom Violence", woo

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 14:07 (twenty years ago) link

hmmm, i think i'm gonna miss this show. we'll see. spectra, thank you for the lollipop! i dug the sour thing in the centre of it.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:20 (twenty years ago) link

Livvie it's incumbent upon you to listen to A Thousand Leaves - it's a fuqxing qreat album! Don't pay ant attention to all those fools who reckon it's no good, they wouldn't know a good album it it jumped up and bit 'em in the butt.

Liz good luck with yr Jim-chasing, I'm picking him to be even more of a groupie-magnet than Thurston.

Minty (Minty), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:07 (twenty years ago) link

I don't know where I'm going to get a copy of A Thousand Leaves but I'll try. Yeah the track off the 7" is good, I should listen to it again in preparation. I want to see the photos!

Livvie (Livvie), Thursday, 1 April 2004 03:24 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah if they're both still in one of my photo albums (I'm sure at least one is) I'll scan them sometime, maybe. I'd like to but I might never be bothered, y'know. I miss taking photos.

Minty (Minty), Monday, 5 April 2004 03:59 (twenty years ago) link

do you think they'll sell out? surely not by the end of April (about when I can probably pay for them)

cuspidorian (cuspidorian), Monday, 5 April 2004 04:40 (twenty years ago) link

No, I mean my plane tickets. It's only $60 to fly from Chch to Auckland, but you have to get them today.

Minty (Minty), Monday, 5 April 2004 04:42 (twenty years ago) link

I bought my airline tickets too! And I'm planning to buy my SY tickets very soon, as soon as I make a decision about seating.

i dreamed about sonic youth last night! i dreamed that they came down here and did a private unplugged concert just for everyone from IRE! and they were really really nice! (though lee was rude to me and steve shelley hit on me which for some reason i found uncomfortable). they gave us all lots of free CDs!

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 01:35 (twenty years ago) link

My mum would probably like it, she likes the quiet part of "Diamond Sea". I've dreamed about Sonic Youth before though I forget what happened.

Livvie (Livvie), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 02:36 (twenty years ago) link

Hey so Livvie are we gonna get to meet your mum?

&no-one's buying stink "seated" tickets, right?

Minty (Minty), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 10:00 (twenty years ago) link

I've dreamt about Sonic Youth like 3 times, in one I made them dinner and it was mince, tofu and mushrooms with a scoop of ice cream on top. They really enjoyed it!

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 10:56 (twenty years ago) link

"Don't forget the icecream!"

Kim Gordon (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 11:06 (twenty years ago) link

I was so envious of that dream!

Livvie (Livvie), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 11:08 (twenty years ago) link

I was too. I don't think I was in it, was I? That'd rule.

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 11:23 (twenty years ago) link

Cooking for Sonic Youth? Wow! I'm paralysed by jealousy. I'd cook them something a damn sight better than your manky creme de mushies mince and tofu, tho.

Livvie (Livvie), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 12:18 (twenty years ago) link

yeah i bought mine about 2 weeks ago.. there seemed to be quite a few available at the time, might have changed by now though

chris andrews (fraew), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 20:27 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, I guess it's not that big a deal if I miss out cause it saves me $65 if I don't get in. Hey Chris this will maybe sound a bit stalkerish but I see you round Christchurch a bit, you prob. don't know who I am though.

Livvie (Livvie), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 09:59 (twenty years ago) link

I think you'll get in really. I don't think I've ever been IDed at the St James, it's kinda a weird venue. Like if they'd ID you they'd probably have IDed me in the past.

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 10:19 (twenty years ago) link

Hey! You should come on AIM. I'm listening to Di on the radio.

Livvie (Livvie), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 11:03 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah I wouldn't worry about it Livvie, I went to gigs at the St. James when I was underage. I'm not even sure it's an r18 venue, I remember one time they stamped my hand to say I couldn't drink.

Minty (Minty), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 11:34 (twenty years ago) link

Okay I WILL buy a ticket. Maybe even tomorrow or Friday! As should you all.

Livvie (Livvie), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 12:04 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah buy a ticket! Serious! Yo! I should sleep!

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 13:48 (twenty years ago) link

I should be able to afford a ticket next week, if the boys from d1e! d1e! d1e! pay me the money for the power bill, cough cough cough. & yeah, wasn't ID'd at the St James the one time I've been there.

There you go, bring yr mum

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 6 May 2004 05:45 (twenty years ago) link

I had a Sonic Youth dream last night!
they had an afternoon gig before the night they played. They covered Violent Femmes "heartache", a really good hard thrashy song, Kim was drumming, really amazingly.
But I started realising I wouldn't be able to afford to go to the night time gig (gee I wonder why that came up!)

cuspidorian (cuspidorian), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:54 (twenty years ago) link

I had a stupid dream about my Mum deciding she was gay and wanting me to get her into the SCENE last night, I just remembered. She had a strapon and was being VERY annoying. And for the sake of this thread um she THEN joined Sonic Youth and they played a great gig! Rock!

carrie sterling, Saturday, 26 June 2004 12:52 (nineteen years ago) link

so how was it?

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Sunday, 27 June 2004 01:41 (nineteen years ago) link

wow. skip tracer owned. jim was o, kinda kept in the background, but he was having fun with lee (who got 2.. or was it 3?) songs. kim went all patti smith, varying between gat and bass, and even trumpet on the last song. they played a big mish-mash of material, and one dude basically dry-humped thurston - who kept playing - then fought him to the ground, it was hilarious, going on for a good 5 minutes while the others were in a groove, the dude finally got up and stole a kiss from kim, before the security gaurds hastened his jump into the crowd.

it all started real early (8pm) so i missed kneale, but mascis was funny, he'd switch from acoustic drool to rock-god overdrive in a fumbling breath.. played a short set, sonic youth started early, played for quite a while, including 3 encores.

chris andrews (fraew), Sunday, 27 June 2004 03:31 (nineteen years ago) link

that dude = dyl4n ph4razon from f0t0. it's entirely possible that stunt was an attempt to piss off his thurston-worshipping ex-gf!

lee got "skip tracer" & "paper cup exit", + did backing vocals on about three songs.
kim pogoing & pirouetting to "drunken butterfly" in heels! lee swinging his guitar at him who then whipped him with a lead!! getting to touch lee & jim!!! PLUR!!!!

etc, Sunday, 27 June 2004 06:27 (nineteen years ago) link

It was wonderful. Best Sy I've seen, I'm pretty sure. Seemed more like a band having a good time (Kim looked RELAXED and COMMANDING at times even, looked good in that dress, MADE A JOKE!), rather than WE ARE SY, or whatever, y'know. Jim makes more of a diff live than on record maybe. Thurston remains a giant hot indiekid w/stickers all over his guitar. Steve is funky.

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 27 June 2004 13:50 (nineteen years ago) link

and hunky

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Monday, 28 June 2004 01:17 (nineteen years ago) link

Haha. ILM just told me Lee tends to do either Skip Tracer or MOTE for his old song. MOTE! MOTE! I mean I really really adore Skip Tracer but MOTE

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 28 June 2004 11:05 (nineteen years ago) link

or HEY JONI! tho mote & skip tracer are k-fuckin rad (hearing him recite "the guitar guy played real good feedback" was pretty cool); pity they don't do wish fulfillment. i'm gonna see how well all of lee's songs fit on a cdr. btw andrew, what were the band's problems w/lee around the time of experimental jet set? haven't heard anything about them (or, uh, that album).

etc, Monday, 28 June 2004 21:18 (nineteen years ago) link

lee renaldo is totally the george harrison of the group, stealthily writing the best songs while the others get all the attention

chris andrews (fraew), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:59 (nineteen years ago) link

You said it was their best album once. Uh I dunno, just general personal shit I guess.

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 03:10 (nineteen years ago) link

Also it was meant to be Kim and Thurston's band really

Wasn't the personal shit around Dirty 'cause they wouldn't put Genetic on the album and didn't want Wish Fulfillment there either?

hsimah (hamish), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 03:20 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah but I was trying to think of why they didn't want "Genetic" on Dirty in the first place. Kind of terrible cos it's about their best ROCK song ever, maybe they were embarrassed Lee was doing the best at it. Me and Elisabeth yelled for it at the gig, didn't work

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 03:23 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh and S if you didn't know there's NO LEE on EJSTANS at ALL. And it mostly sucks, tho it was cool to hear "Bull in the Heather" live, Jim seemed particularly useful on it

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 03:29 (nineteen years ago) link

Some observations from the show:

1. At several points at the gig Jim did the 'Bruce Russell thing' of playing the lead with no instrument. For two way-too-brief moments in the improv bits he played guitar just like he used to in the old days; ie. so it sounds nothing like a guitar.
2. Thurston plays real simple guitar. They would turn into the Grateful Dead if it wasn't for him.
3. Someone yelled "play in New Zealand next time" and Jim looked confused.
4. There was a place you could stand where you could hardly hear the bands vocals. Most of the audience there were better singers than Thurston, Kim and Lee. Not Jim obviously.
5. People in the moshpit were less violent than they were at the Chch Dirty show.
6. Ticket says "Doors open 8pm" and then show starts at 8.05. wtf?
7. Lee played a synth at the start.
8. The J Mascis set was like a free jazz set with all the songs played together without a break and everyone clapping the solos.
8. Steve had a smaller drumkit than last time I saw him and played funky drums instead of big bomastic rolling.
9. Oh yeah and Jim touched my hand.

hsimah (hamish), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 03:37 (nineteen years ago) link

I tried listening to a few Lee songs together once and they all sounded the same.

hsimah (hamish), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 03:37 (nineteen years ago) link

I remember getting EJST&NS home (the last new vinyl album to be cheaper than a CD?) and trying to skip straight to the Lee song. I looked at the titles thought 'In the Mind of the Bourgeois Reader' must be the Lee song.

You call yourself Youth but you're too fucking old. Sorry I had to say something stupider than above. I wonder if Peter Jefferies was there.

who said what was their best album? um.
I totally forgot about that synth/organ thing! pretty cool. & yeah, steve's funky drumming was a uh revelation though I didn't look at him as much as I meant to (& I didn't see enough of thurston either, but I was on the other side of the stage & my eyesight really suxx).
I'm annoyed that I didn't see BCM - I heard he was starting at 9pm & sprinted from arch hill to get there, grrr.

sorry if i sounded kind of snide there but i just thought, huh pretty bad example for what he's probably trying to say. whadda i know tho, i haven't even heard any SY records since experimental jet set etc etc. also i'm not even some big time dead head, i've only heard like 3 versions of dark star & to be a real deadnik you've gotta have like a tape library of like 30 versions of that song alone, i believe

I'm going to listen to it again soon, but I'm pretty sure it has about 5-7 good songs (out of about 14) which is USELESS for Sy

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 12:26 (nineteen years ago) link

It IS their low-fi/GBV/Riot Grrl album tho. Wonder why it sucked, those are certainly all their big strengths

they played that same feckin SY song on intellectual property two weeks ago. and the same blonde redhead song. and then they played two songs they played last week, by unmemorable bands. and some franz ferdinand. fuck that show sucked tonight. wasn't steve shelley sexy though?

Experimental JetSet has two of my favourite SY songs on it: "bull in the heather" and "sweet shine" therefore I like it plenty. I don't know SY as well as most of you though.
I reckon "youth against fascism" is one of my least favourites.

cuspidorian (cuspidorian), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 00:52 (nineteen years ago) link

I wasn't planning on getting jet set; I stopped buying SY stuff since marc3l kept my copies of confusion is sex (which I liked a whole lot) & evol (which I'd just grudgingly made myself buy, blah blah anti-evol/sister but I was gonna reverse my position but then I never got to listen to it so FUCK EM).

etc, Wednesday, 30 June 2004 08:17 (nineteen years ago) link

I like messing up the EJSTANS cd covers in Real Groovy. My favourite's the green one.

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 10:15 (nineteen years ago) link

Are all you Lee worshippers forgetting that he wandered on stage reading (or pretending to read) a book? Blaaah.
I was kinda hoping that SY would follow "Skip Tracer" with a cover of "Shut Out". Mind you, if they did it would probably just have been annoying cos that song sucks.
Who the devil is Carrie Sterling?

Anyone ever heard the Sonic Youth folk do an admiration for Hawkwind. Rolling through the pines of Virginia jamming both Goo and Doremi Fasol Latido, I seemed to notice how similar the stoned gallop of "Lord of Light" is to many Sonic Youth numbers. It was more the groove and the drone than anything.

If you could re-sequence/revise the track list for one Sonic Youth album, what would it be and how would you change it?

I’m going with Washing Machine, an album that’s near to perfect but slightly half-hearted about its desire to be psychedelic.

Here’s what I’d do:
- cut “Junkie’s Promise”
- cut “Panty Lies”
- merge “Becuz” and “Becuz Coda” into a single song
- would I cut “Skip Tracer”? Maybe
- replace the 19:35 version of “Diamond Sea” with the ~25 minute long version from the CD5
- Bliss out

"Skip Tracer" is solid! Lyrics are kind of mean tho, SY don't really have room to be making fun of other bands' lyrics.

the title track is so amazing though, the middle section, particularly when they start playing that harmonics/feedback riff, is the ideal of what I listen to them for.
