Mets' cola sponsor has moved from Pepsi to Coke, but the t-shirt-cannon pepsters have not slotted it into their name, which would've been perfect in a year honoring the '86 champs.

KLaw generally high on the state of the Mets, befuddled by Asdrubal:
He CANNOT play shortstop, and he hasn’t been able to play shortstop for several years now. So I don’t understand— I mean yes, this is the front office that decided Wilmer Flores could play shortstop, he really couldn’t play shortstop either— but then to go from Flores to Cabrera— is Cabrera really better than Flores, at anything? I mean Flores, I know the production wasn’t great, but the swing’s good, he puts the ball in play a lot, and I still think he’s going to come into some power, whereas Cabrera, outside of that one crazy first half power-wise he had with Cleveland a couple years ago, you kind of never got it. So I don’t understand— do they think they’re getting a better defensive shortstop than they really are? Do they think he’s going to turn into a 20 homer guy? Because I don’t believe that that’s the case.
I didn’t understand that signing at all. It’s part of why— somebody asked me about the Mets offseason— it’s great that they did spend some money, but what if they had taken the money they gave to Cespedes, and Cabrera, and Alejandro De Aza, and thrown it at one of the more premium free agents on the market. They could have done something better. Cabrera over Flores, I don’t even know if that’s an upgrade, and if it is, it’s a fairly small one.

Eric: Keith, have you ever seen a 95mph slider before? Thor looks even better than advertised in your opinion who is the first pitcher the Mets lock up long term or do you think they will wait until they’re all eligible for free agency.
Klaw: No and I’m guessing that was a cutter (or a bad gun reading). Thor is the one guy of their aces I’d most want to lock up – I think he offers the best potential for durability. [Post-chat edit: sounds like pitch f/x had that velocity and Syndergaard called it a slider. I think it would be the hardest slider in MLB history.]

Keith Hernandez was peeved last year about the Mets' "pitch-taking approach" last year, I haven't heard him enough this season to know if he's still on it.
(The) Mets lead the league in fewest swings at the first pitch during at-bats in all of baseball, at 22.1 percent, and see the fourth-most pitches per plate appearance (3.98) in the National League.
As evidenced by the big run-scoring, their patience appears to be paying off.
"Obviously, if you were seeing two pitches per at-bat and hitting every other one of them over the fence, I'll take it, but that's not reality," Mets manager Terry Collins said Monday. "Reality is: you have to make the pitcher work to where he's gotta come to you."

Jaffe on the Cult of Bartolo:
Colon's pitches are sometimes described as "bowling balls" for the way that they sink and the difficulty that batters have elevating them, though to be fair, his groundball and home run rates are nothing special (40.7% and 1.0 per nine since joining the Mets before the 2014 season). What is special is his walk rate; he led the NL last year with just 1.1 passes per nine and has been below 1.5 per nine in each of the last four seasons. His 1.27 per nine since the start of 2012 is 0.01 behind Cliff Lee for the lead among all pitchers with at least 300 innings, while his 4.8 strikeout-to-walk ratio in that span is seventh.

New York Mets third baseman David Wright was scratched from Tuesday's showdown against the Washington Nationals because his balky back acted up before the game. Conforto staying up mostly cuz the whole lineup sux
Conforto had a .591 OPS in May and watched that number shrink to .372 in June with an 0-for-10 series in Milwaukee last weekend....
“He looks like he’s been trying to pull everything,” said a talent evaluator who has watched Conforto recently. “That’s not him.”
Conforto has dealt with “tenderness” in his left wrist in recent days and was expected to be examined Monday, but the Mets had no update on his condition.

Lugo is 3-4 with a 6.55 ERA in 19 appearances (13 starts) this season with Triple-A Las Vegas.
The Mets obviously need coverage in case Steven Matz has an elbow issue and needs to depart. Logan Verrett threw 92 pitches Wednesday in Washington and would be unavailable for that role.

i seem to remember reading a story where reyes said he was going to make himself open to younger players in the clubhouse on the subject of his grave errors in judgment. if that is true, then at least some good can come from a horrific situation. major sports are not exactly places where men have been historically encouraged to deal with anger—or any emotions—in productive ways.
also, not for nothing, but can we also talk about how jeffrey fucking loria and his abject awfulness probably helped set all this in motion? http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/reyes-loria-told-me-to-buy-a-house-two-days-before-trade/

Harvey to DL (sigh)
It definitely sounds like Matt Harvey's issue may be at least somewhat similar to Dillon Gee's -- although we'll learn the severity after Thursday's exam. Dr. Robert Thompson specializes in thoracic outlet syndrome and vascular issues (related to blood flow). His Washington University bio lists his areas of clinical interest as: "Thoracic outlet syndrome, TOS, minimally invasive surgical techniques and other treatment to patients with vascular disease including abdominal aortic aneurysms, thoracic aneurysms, renal aneurysms, carotid artery disease, arterial occlusive disease, brachiocephalic and upper extremity occlusive disease, aortoiliac and lower extremity occlusive arterial disease, and venous and lymphatic disease, axillary subclavian vein thrombosis."
― helpless before THRILLARY (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 6 July 2016 21:53 (seven years ago) link
Matt Harvey has been presented two options -- surgery or a nerve-block injection -- for thoracic outlet syndrome. He is weighing his options. Surgery would require four months. A block would just be a temporary fix.
Sandy Alderson said he is unsure how long Matt Harvey has been pitching with the issue. The GM said surgery is inevitable in all likelihood. The team only became aware of Harvey's shoulder discomfort after his last start.

A. Rubin:
"Duda had a flare-up of discomfort in his lower back and has been advised by Los Angeles-based specialist Robert Watkins to remain idle for 30 days. Duda originally landed on the DL on May 23 with a stress fracture. Because Duda is making $6.725 million this season and is eligible for arbitration a final time this winter, he is a non-tender candidate. James Loney has proven a capable alternative to Duda. Sandy Alderson mentioned the possibility of asking an outfielder to prepare during the offseason to play first base in 2017. Michael Conforto and Jay Bruce would be the logical candidates."

Terry Collins says the reports are there is no real structural damage with Steven Matz. The concern is about stiffness/tightness in Matz's shoulder, which returned during one toss whole throwing on flat ground Monday. Matz immediately was shut down.... Jacob deGrom moves up a day.
Collins confirms Michael Conforto will join the team when the roster expands Thursday. Conforto will be "in the mix" for playing time, although Collins could not define what that means.

Tebow, who hasn't played organized baseball since his junior year at Nease High School in Ponte Vedra, Florida, in 2005, has been working out with former big league catcher Chad Moeller in Scottsdale, Arizona, since Memorial Day. Tebow spent almost two hours last week at the Southern California's Dedeaux Field running a 60-yard dash, shagging fly balls, throwing from the outfield and taking swings against former major league pitchers David Aardsma and Chad Smith in his audition for clubs.

Terry Collins said his preference would be to give Noah Syndergaard extra rest rather than bring him back Sunday on regular rest in order to delay the slot that had been occupied by Rafael Montero. Of course, that would necessitate using Jacob deGrom and/or Steven Matz on Sunday against the Twins -- or a non-optimal option that isn't clear. There is no intention of using Montero in the rotation again.

i'd call him a good hitter in 2010-13, at least :/
― The Hon. J. Piedmont Mumblethunder (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 28 September 2016 01:19 (seven years ago) link
I am rooting for him, but he hasn't settled in yet.
With Wilmer Flores shut down, I'm guessing Conforto and TJ Rivera will make a potential post-season roster.

AP:
"If you wake up Sunday morning and say, `OK, we're in', but we don't necessarily have home-field advantage, do we use Syndergaard?" Collins asked. "Or do we say, `He's going to pitch the first playoff game, no matter where it's at?"
If the Mets have clinched home-field advantage, they might start Syndergaard on Sunday and have him throw about 25 pitches to ensure he's sharp for the wild-card playoff game on Wednesday.
"Otherwise he goes eight days without pitching," Collins said.

JR, CT: Hi Keith, would you give the Mets any chance against the Cubs with their rotation in the shape it is now. I imagine best case is the lefty power bats get/stay hot and they can slug their way to some ugly wins?
Klaw: I would never give any team in a playoff series less than 45% odds to win it.

I mean he's just saying "sports are unpredictable over the short-term!" which is true but a) doesn't really need to be said at this point b) doesn't really answer the question
― Immediate Follower (NA), Friday, 30 September 2016 14:37 (seven years ago) link
i would interpret his answer as 'i give them a 45% chance'
it's not a very meaningful question tho

Steven Matz had what was described as a "massive" bone spur removed from his pitching elbow on Tuesday. Team doctor David Altchek performed the procedure at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan. Matz also had a platelet-rich-plasma injection in his left shoulder. He had been dealing with an impingement. Matz is expected to be fully recovered for spring training.

I'd think Houston or Texas might be interested in Bruce as both clubs seem to always look to get Texans playing on their teams.
I could perhaps see the Reds trading Hamilton as they got 3 other CF players on the 40 man roster. Hamilton would definitely be handy in the Mets new stadium since it is pretty big as he can cover a ton of ground.
