Altchek's Office Alumni: 2017 New York Mets

Matt Harvey guessed it was about a year ago, in spring training. Zack Wheeler thinks it might have been sometime early last season. Noah Syndergaard couldn’t be certain that it had ever happened at all, at least when healthy.

When was the last time the Mets’ young guns assembled at the same time, at the same place?

“Altchek’s office, I think,” manager Terry Collins joked, a reference to the team doctor who hasn’t been hurting for business, David Altchek.

The Mets will proceed with caution when it comes to Wheeler and his injuries. According to Dan Warthen, Wheeler could be facing an innings limit in the low 100s, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he should start the year in the bullpen.

Dan Martin, NY Post:

It isn’t exactly the Yankees versus Dellin Betances, but Noah Syndergaard admitted Saturday he “didn’t agree with” the $605,500 contract the Mets renewed with him on Friday.

Syndergaard didn’t sign the contract, meaning he will be paid the same amount as last year, despite his stellar season.

“I did not sign my contract,” Syndergaard said Saturday morning, one day after making his spring debut. “I didn’t agree with it, but other than that, I don’t discuss my contract with the media.”

Alderson Q&A

I've learned a tremendous amount just in the last six years, from people around me, from others in the organization as well as just the experience. I feel much more capable today than I did in 2011. Whether I am or not, I don't know. One of the things -- I'm now the oldest GM, probably, which requires some adjustment on my part in terms of communication and building relationships with others who are a little bit younger than I am. When I first started, I was the young one, I was the outsider, and now I'm the one that's been around the longest.

In either case, you have to purposefully reach out and make sure that you are creating and maintaining relationships, and rethinking your approach to account for new ideas and new information. The biggest change is not about ideas; it's about information. There's so much more information available, and trying to stay current with that and being open-minded.

At the start of the bottom of the third inning, New York Mets designated hitter Tim Tebow left the dugout to get some warm-up swings in before stepping into the box. But, strangely, he walked all the way around behind the plate—from the Mets dugout on the third-base side to the on-deck circle in front of the visitors’ dugout, on the first-base side.

Boston’s Rick Porcello, warming up on the mound, said he assumed it was a bat boy. After all, why would a Mets player be over there?

After a few swings, home plate umpire Ryan Additon noticed Tebow in the wrong on-deck circle, and told Tebow to get back to his side of the field. Tebow sheepishly complied.

Afterward Tebow explained his mistake, saying he had always thought that lefty batters warm up on that side of the field no matter which team they play for.

“I thought you walk around because you’re a left-hander. I found out you don’t do that.”

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Tim Tebow hit a two-run homer in the first at-bat of his minor league baseball debut for the Class A Columbia Fireflies on Thursday night.

Tebow, the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner, drilled a 2-1 pitch off the railing in left-center field, where a strong wind had been blowing out all day.

The homer came off Augusta left-hander Dominique Mazza and sent the sellout crowd at Spirit Communications Park into a frenzy of cheers.

Fans shouted "Te-Bow! Te-Bow!'' after the former University of Florida and NFL quarterback fouled off a pitch.

The chants grew louder as Tebow circled the bases on his homer, pumping his fist as he rounded second base.

Jay Bruce playing for a contract. If everything goes well this year, I would not be surprised if the Astros or Rangers try and sign him next year. It will be interesting to see how Bruce's career goes in his 30s, if he stays healthy and productive, I think he has a decent shot at 400 HRs.

Mets probably want Bruce to have a nice season, but not TOO nice a season where the NY media/fanbase insists he is signed up for a big NY extension.

Newsday:

Collins said Syndergaard had been bothered by discomfort during the time since his last start Thursday. Though he told Collins on Thursday morning that he felt his condition had improved, the manager thought it prudent to go cautiously.

Syndergaard said he felt the discomfort against after his bullpen session on Monday and playing catch on Tuesday.

“I played catch yesterday, felt great playing catch,” Syndergaard said Thursday morning. “And it just kind of stiffens up once it gets cold. I couldn’t really lift my arm above my shoulder at that point.”

Syndergaard said that the discomfort is more toward the shoulder.

Collins contacted Harvey in the morning and the righthander said he’d have no problem pitching today.

The severity of Syndergaard’s condition is unknown, and Collins said he likely would be sent for medical tests. But he may not miss more than one start. The Mets aren’t putting him on the 10-day disabled list at present.

“It’s a little thing right now, but definitely don’t want it turn into a big thing,” Syndergaard said.

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 10 May 2017 03:03 (six years ago) link

Since I’ve been covering the Giants, they’ve had a pitcher fall off a dirt bike, a pitcher miss the All-Star Game with flu-like symptoms, a pitcher busted for possession of marijuana, a pitcher detained for arguing at a Vegas airport, players with questionable work ethics, players who didn’t get along with members of the organization because they thought they were better than they actually were, players with salary complaints, and a player who scheduled surgery right in the middle of the postseason because, gee, why would he want to hang around the team in the middle of the postseason? I’m sure I’m missing a whole bunch, too.

They were all stories. They never contributed to a general sense of “What are the Giants doing, lol?”

When any of that happens to the Mets, though, it becomes a story that hurts the entire organization. That’s because of a perception that’s been created with the help of everyone from the owners to the star players, sure. That salt has already been added to the soup, and it’s not coming back out. The only thing to do is to make sure everyone remembers at all times that the Mets will always be held to a different, unfair standard. Live it. Internalize it. Have training sessions and orientations about it. Make sure the rookies know. Make sure Ted from sales knows.

but he's at least doing well enough to make you wonder what might have been, if not well enough to take playing time away from an actual prospect at a higher level. he's hitting 4.5x more grounders than fly balls, which does not play into his strength of being fucking huge, so maybe if his swing can be tweaked . . .

Moltar:
In your Insider piece today you talk about how Harvey still has the stuff to be successful, but no longer generates swings and misses. Is it reasonable to think that Harvey is still less than %100? If the Mets’ injury prevention program wasn’t a dumpster fire, would he have been better served starting the year on the DL and pitching a full compliment of rehab starts?

Jeff Sullivan:
Well, that’s impossible for us to know and be any kind of certain. My hunch is that Harvey had his delivery kind of screwed up when he made that emergency start against Atlanta, but that’s just uninformed speculation.

I have yet to do a real Harvey deep dive. But it’s instantly clear that his O-Swing even from last year has dropped 10 percentage points. That’s a problem with his secondary stuff, and not his fastball.
…which then becomes a problem for his fastball, since hitters can look for it.

I just read the article about the Seaver trade in the Post ... if this happened today, would people see it differently? These days, if a team knows it can't contend this year or the next, they almost have to trade a star who's signed to a team friendly contract.

So I guess it's really about how Mets management treated their biggest ever star like shit, rather than the trade itself?

NoTimeBeforeTime, Friday, 16 June 2017 13:30 (six years ago) link

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Friday, 16 June 2017 19:57 (six years ago) link

Seaver signed a two year extension with a hometown discount instead of testing free agency. I guess you could point fingers at both sides there (Seaver for being naive, Mets management for taking advantage of him) but baseball fans as a whole were on the owners' side of the free agency issue, so Seaver was in a bad place, PR-wise, when his demands for a raise became public.

In the past decade, Johan Santana and Roy Halladay were franchise pitchers who were traded in their prime for players who never panned out. Of course they weren't inner circle HOF'ers like Seaver. But comparing these kinds of things across eras is (probably) pointless anyway -- every era needs to be considered within the context of its time.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Friday, 16 June 2017 20:21 (six years ago) link

I had forgotten most of the money details. It wasn't exactly a hometown discount -- the multimillion signings (Wayne Garland being the first, as the Post article says) began just after TS signed his 3-year deal.

btw Wright has started 'low-level' baseball activities :(

Are the Mets really considering picking up Asdrubal's option for 2018, or are they just trying to create (literally any) demand for him as a waiver trade candidate?

Eno Sarris
Dude's been worth $8.5 million every year save one in his career, really. And how much does a Mets fan hate having Asdrubal and Wilmer around Rosario going into the offseason anyway? Leaves you options -- if Wright retires, have a chunk of change for an infielder and guys you can move around. Or spend on a CF.

https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--ghHIwP0D--/c_scale,fl_progressive,q_80,w_800/ujvbsffrmslch3ppvsnu.gif

Reliever Hansel Robles was brought in for a tie game in the eighth inning. This, already, was something of a questionable decision for a fairly high-leverage moment, given that he’s been one of team’s weakest bullpen options this year—performing well below replacement level with an ERA north of 5.00. But Robles took the mound anyway, and for all of a few minutes, everything was fine. During the second batter of the inning, however, both Robles and catcher Travis d’Arnaud got hurt on the same pitch.

...

But Robles’s day was just getting started. He was brought back out for the ninth, even though he isn’t typically given the chance to record more than three outs.

He hit the first batter, Jonathan Lucroy, and watched him advance to second on a sac bunt. Manager Terry Collins then decided to intentionally walk Charlie Blackmon, only to watch Robles walk the bases full on the next batter. Now with a chance to make the very reasonable move of pulling his reliever—who had been doubled over in pain during the previous inning and was clearly struggling after loading the bases in the bottom of the ninth in a tie game—Collins apparently figured, eh, what’s the point, and just left him in.

Nolan Arenado was the next batter. Robles walked him. The Mets lost, 5-4.

Here’s a nice update about how Robles was feeling throughout that:

Robles had numbness in fingers pitching the ninth. In the eighth he landed awkwardly and pinched his genitals, prompting Ray Ramirez visit.

— Mike Puma (@NYPost_Mets) August 3, 2017

And exactly how numb was he during this inning in which he walked or hit three of the four batters he faced?

Robles said he felt numbness in his right hand in the 9th. Couldn't feel the ball. Did not share that with anyone until after game.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Thursday, 17 August 2017 14:20 (six years ago) link

Collins had the players switch 22 times, and this strategy led to natural infielder Cabrera getting all the groundballs and d'Arnaud only having to handle one popup, which was hit by pinch-hitter Todd Frazier in the ninth inning.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi's reaction to this unusual strategy?

"I thought it was really smart on Terry's point," Girardi said. "D'Arnaud's never played the infield. So I think they were trying to give him the least amount of chances possible. He got one and he made it."
