Impulse buy today. Fun so far, but I can't do much cool stuff yet.

Jeff, Wednesday, 10 October 2012 05:34 (eleven years ago) link

i spent and indulgent sick day with this yesterday. first impressions:

the look of the game is great. a few ppl have said the slight unrealism of the character modeling is a turnoff, you all should reconsider. let's be real, games can't yet render cinema-grade physical creations, it's ALL art. the choice in this game to make the people look a bit like a schiele (or john currin, in some cases) painting is a good one. the lighting is very good, everything takes on a watercolor kind of vibe. it's pretty.

i'm enjoying and am interested in this world and its history and politics. though because this is bethesda there are a million books scattered around that i am not really reading. the atmosphere of physical and political corruption is convincing, and the designers have i think done a good job to keep a lot of those details elliptical and not entirely spelled out. i'm far enough in to see the basic shape of the plot but no big switches or betrayals have happened yet; i'm sure they're on the way.

gameplay and controls seem robust and intuitive so far. i guess the weak point would be the sword combat which has the whack-whack-whack sameness of skyrim -- the difference being that even at normal diff it's very lethal, making defense timing crucial. on my first run-through i'm going for stealth so i haven't checked out the combat powers or gadgets much yet. if fps platforming sounds awful to you, don't get this game, i guess.

so far i've picked out brad dourif and of course susan sarandon in the v/o. checking imdb i see john slattery is a main character, totally missed that

/ me, / me. /. /. (goole), Wednesday, 10 October 2012 17:03 (eleven years ago) link

well fps platforming is one of the worst things in creation so now i am concerned

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 10 October 2012 17:16 (eleven years ago) link

i'm playing this back-to-back with arkham city and even compared to that it's not bad at all!

/ me, / me. /. /. (goole), Wednesday, 10 October 2012 17:18 (eleven years ago) link

i never played portal 2, isn't that gold standard?

there's not much jumping. most of the platforming is done with the 'blink' power, which means you aim at a spot w/in range and voop you're there.

it's meant to be instantaneous, and the game re-accelerates all sound from a molasses-slow pitch when you come out of it, even ambient dialogue. details like that are well done.

/ me, / me. /. /. (goole), Wednesday, 10 October 2012 17:24 (eleven years ago) link

welp, i got to the twist. could have seen that coming!

in terms of atmospherics & vibe this game reminds me of half-life 2, in that there are people trying to live through a permanent crisis amid industrial ruin. lots of time spent perched somewhere in windswept quietude while figuring out how to manage the next set of obstacles. creeped-out masked security men everywhere.

the option to turn objective markers off is a fuckin brilliant innovation. i had to turn them back on for a second b/c the game wanted something really specific and it was totally jarring--like i was playing call of duty. i like it when dishonored is like, "go talk to havelock" and i have to traipse all over the level looking for him. old school shit.

adam, Sunday, 14 October 2012 15:35 (eleven years ago) link

this came over the weekend (yesss) and i binged on it yesterday, got through the prison and the first main mission. going stealth all the way, but i did kill a few people early on when i didn't know what i was doing/had no powers, and to help out semi-honest citizens.

i played that first assassination over and over -- first time i made it all the way out to the dock (with all this loot from the workshop etc) before realizing i was supposed to do something with the overseer's unconscious body, then i tried many times to pull off sleep-darting both the target and the dude you were supposed to save, then i settled for poisoning the target and hiding the other one in the 'safe' dumpster.

...

my 2nd run-through (already ha) i'm going more lethal "high chaos" but still decided to save that other dude. i flipped the poison, waited for that conversation to finish (the overseer succumbs) then sleep-darted the captain. as i carried the captain out on the exterior ledge, i overheard two guards talking about how the meeting is 'taking so long, better check'. i leave the captain on the ledge, go back in the room, grab the overseer's body, leave HIM hidden on the ledge, take the captain to the dumpster, and go from there. no alarms! really cool moment.

you can pickpocket anyone and pick up any valuables and people say humorous cynical things but don't care. the subtext is that everyone is there to get a piece of the rich family anyway, it's pretty funny.

i've been doing forza but i need to finish my 'no kill' run

goole, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 17:27 (eleven years ago) link

so how com every time i run this it performs FIRST TIME SET UP and spends ten minutes INSTALLING DIRECT X STEP 1 OF 1?

itt: 'splaining men (ledge), Thursday, 1 November 2012 22:47 (eleven years ago) link

That's a pretty common steam problem, I've had it with other games before too. Best workaround is usually to dig into the game folder, find the exe, and launch it direct without starting steam in the first place. Doesn't always work but it's fixed the problem more often than not for me.

Btw I think I gave up on this today, haven't even finished mission 2 but I'm just not having any fun with it. Playing stealth is just too hard for me, I spent a lot of time being super harsh on myself, saving after every guard takedown, reloading every time I got spotted...but that just became a massive slog, I was reloading every 2 minutes. So after spending probably 3 hours on what should've been an hour's worth of game, decided screw it, I'm just going to kill everyone, only to find that it's kinda boring playing that way too, not least because ammo is so tight.

Also, I know I was excited about the level design maybe being similar to half life 2...but actually it feels a bit too similar, it's almost a retread.

JimD, Thursday, 1 November 2012 23:47 (eleven years ago) link

A mixture of both has been good for me. Stealth seems to have become much more important later in the game.

Jeff, Thursday, 1 November 2012 23:55 (eleven years ago) link

So after spending probably 3 hours on what should've been an hour's worth of game

three times the gameplay! value for money!

I'm kinda of doing ok stealth-wise, blink power is a great help. stopping time should be even better, though then i guess mana instead of ammo will become a problem.

itt: 'splaining men (ledge), Friday, 2 November 2012 09:10 (eleven years ago) link

done with my stealth run. i love this game but i don't know if i have the chops/interest in doing a violent run. maybe if all your video game friends didn't make you feel so shitty about it!

have a sandwich or ice cream sandwich (Jordan), Friday, 2 November 2012 15:49 (eleven years ago) link

i did really enjoy not having to kill anyone though, it makes other games seem one-dimensional (like the trailers for Far Cry 3, where you can either stealthily kill some people before openly killing everyone, or just openly kill everyone right away!). maybe this is a sign of getting old.

have a sandwich or ice cream sandwich (Jordan), Friday, 2 November 2012 15:57 (eleven years ago) link

did you manage it completely kill-free?

itt: 'splaining men (ledge), Friday, 2 November 2012 15:57 (eleven years ago) link

almost, but like i said above i slipped up a couple times when i was out of sleep darts/low on resources. i panicked and took out a couple guards and assassins rather than get discovered, also granny rags. i definitely killed less then 10 people total.

have a sandwich or ice cream sandwich (Jordan), Friday, 2 November 2012 16:01 (eleven years ago) link

fucking "clean hands" achievement is bugged! got all the way through without a death, no achievement.

goole, Saturday, 10 November 2012 17:28 (eleven years ago) link

Finished this, got the good ending (probably killed < 10 people). Spent a lot of time saving & reloading but that was ok, or at least it was ok when I remembered to save regularly and didn't have to replay massive chunks of the game. It was fun, not AWESOME fun but the using powers to aid in stealth lifted it above yr run of the mill fps. Very strong HL2 vibe. The Outsider himself I thought was a) a jerk and ii) a pointless plot/tutorial device. Might have a go at a balls-out speed death run.

Dog the Puffin Hunter (ledge), Wednesday, 14 November 2012 09:41 (eleven years ago) link

My memory of half-life 2 is basically 100% "save every 10 seconds" but I am a wuss so there.

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 14 November 2012 14:16 (eleven years ago) link

manual + frequent saving is not a negative for me (although fwiw i thought the auto-saves in both HL2 and Dishonored worked pretty well).

have a sandwich or ice cream sandwich (Jordan), Wednesday, 14 November 2012 14:27 (eleven years ago) link

Auto save not frequent enough for stealth runs in dishonored, basically 90% of my gameplay was like:

choke one guy, sneak for two mins, try to choke next guy, get spotted, reload...
choke one guy, sneak for two mins, try to choke next guy, get spotted, reload...
choke one guy, sneak for two mins, try to choke next guy, get spotted, reload...
choke one guy, sneak for two mins, OK MAYBE I WILL SAVE NOW

JimD, Wednesday, 14 November 2012 17:02 (eleven years ago) link

It's a bit unfair to blame the game for that tbh, it's a combination of overconfidence (hoping to pull off spectacular stealth feats first time around, and thinking you can go ages without saving) and carelessness (failing miserably at spectacular stealth feats, and goddamn forgetting to save). The game really tries to help you out, the guards are incredibly myopic, predictable, and stupid. Playing through again in full on violence mode there's no doubt it's easier, but you still can't charge in all guns blazing, you will get attacked on all sides and taken down.

Things from this I would like to see in the mythical next HL2 (or any fps): multiple paths - a second playthrough is great for really discovering richness of the world and the different options open to you; optional goals; and being able to climb over things higher than your knee.

Dog the Puffin Hunter (ledge), Saturday, 17 November 2012 00:07 (eleven years ago) link

I dunno, one of the great things about Half-life is how well it tells its story, which is kind of tied up in being single-path (albeit with big open setpieces). Optional goals are mostly covered by achievements these days - EG the garden gnome one in Ep2.

Andrew Farrell, Saturday, 17 November 2012 12:36 (eleven years ago) link

Not sure how the optional goals detracted from the story, they were more like bonus sub-plots, as well as offering alternative means of completing the main missions. They could only make for a richer experience imo.

I love how dense the levels are in this- reminds me of Minerva: Metastasis (and Adam Foster's other maps for HL2). I'm still really, really fucking bad at it, though; even with Darksight I'm having problems finding holes in the guards' patrol patterns.

i am getting way too reliant on blink lvl 2 and sleep darts tbh. which is making this archive level painfully hard.

spent probably way too much time on the kennels last night. digging the fact that the game def punishes you for doing stuff mindlessly, like pulling any lever you see etc. first time in the kennels i pulled all the gate switches thinking the dogs would fuck over the patrolling overseers, and then duh, just had a shit ton of wandering guard dogs to deal with instead. or the "hmmm i have a key to a pantry i should obv open it despite all the stuff here about starving rats OH FUCK STARVING RATS EVERYWHERE."

i am so into this game at this point - doing the stealth playthrough vibe right now, and unlike every other game like this, i am actually really excited by the idea of going through it a second time going all killing lethal. also just figured out that grenades are awesome for getting rid of rat swarms.

weirdly small map imo though. end up retracing a lot of the same ground, but the little mods and changes (like these asshole assassins suddenly fucking w/me on rooftops and shit) make it feel interesting to roll through an area a second time. equipment upgrades seem mostly pointless though. blink + better jump + see through walls deal is the shit

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 21:06 (ten years ago) link

it's pretty fun. i'm not that far in yet but i'm enjoying it. so far my mode is "stealth until i get frustrated and then i kill people"

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 30 May 2013 17:10 (ten years ago) link

true story: i normally hate stealth mission shit, like really really hate it, but this seems to have gotten it totally right. honestly i think that comes mostly down to blink, if that wasnt there this would suck, but theres just an incredibly rich amount of pathways thx to that - like every mission has a ton of different ways to navigate the map, and a ton of different ways to do what you need to do. rat tunnels, underwater passageways, all the pipes and ductwork, rewire tools, etc. it's a pretty perfectly realized game.

SPOILER KINDA MAYBE
best example yet of this is the fact that you dont even need to lower the drawbridge at all if you don't want, despite that being a mission goal or whatever, just thread your climbing and cross the absolute top of the thing. thats awesome design imo, in the best tradition of letting the player do whatever the fuck they want to do.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 30 May 2013 17:16 (ten years ago) link

i just started playing this finally and after having my expectations ruthlessly suppressed regarding the game itself and the stealth in particular, i have been delighted to find that it is unputdownable fun, kind of bringing into contrast how little i was enjoying the very putdownable bioshock infinite

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 30 May 2013 17:37 (ten years ago) link

i like this game but i feel guilty whenever i give up on stealth and just kill people. i feel like i should try harder to be stealthy.

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 30 May 2013 17:38 (ten years ago) link

Okay, I put in a few hours here. it is VERY deus ex. i like it a lot but it's making me feel like i'm in completionist mode. And yeah, i'm constantly restarting if I needlessly kill people. Even weepers!

i didn't even give much of a fuck that you were mod (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 30 May 2013 18:10 (ten years ago) link

n/a, stealth gets much more doable once you double upgrade blink, the see through walls thing and agility. the turning point for me was the archive level, which kind of works like a upper level stealth tutorial in a lot of ways, teaches you to kind of nail down your blink aiming while still keeping your head on a swivel thx to the multiple guard paths.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 30 May 2013 18:34 (ten years ago) link

this was very good! they didn't do a lot wrong. it was an appropriate length and i was fully into it the whole way. were it any longer that might have changed, as for the back half of the game i had all of the powers etc that i wanted and i ran out of upgrades that i cared about, so it was just as you were from that point onwards, no development. i rooted out every rune and bone charm* just for the fun of it but i ended up with like 20 unused runes. they were so many upgrades and powers focused on killing ppl, but really not killing ppl was the key ingredient of the game, and if you just wandered through taking dudes out i can't imagine it being too much fun. great level design was essential to keeping things interesting and they did a really good job on that.

*i missed one bone charm, which was in the lord regent's gaff. it seemed to be right behind a wall that there was no way around? i am sure there was a cool secret passage i missed out on but i ended up choking every mofo on that floor and dumping them all in the toilet and i still couldn't find anything when i had a free run of the place

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 4 June 2013 13:13 (ten years ago) link

I found it pretty fun taking dudes out the whole game. I was a monster.

Jeff, Tuesday, 4 June 2013 13:14 (ten years ago) link

what happens when the world becomes more "dark and chaotic"? is it just a bunch more rat swarms and plague dudes? i was toying with burning thru in rambo mode to find out.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 4 June 2013 13:16 (ten years ago) link

yup, more rats, more weepers. i think some of the ambient dialogue is 'harder', and the little princess gets bratty. it's kind of worth it.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 4 June 2013 13:24 (ten years ago) link

protip: doing a violent playthru is still 95% a stealth playthru, cos the combat is legit difficult, esp against 3 or more dudes. the perk where you can backstab and make the body dissolve is key imo

It's not Aimless.

Jeff, Tuesday, 4 June 2013 20:44 (ten years ago) link

depends how you're playing it i guess? doesn't seem like aiming would be an issue unless you were going all-in commando mode, otherwise you could go no-kill or snipe or knife? but i'm not that far into the game yet.

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 4 June 2013 20:47 (ten years ago) link

there is a kind of soft auto-aim. required aiming skills are low.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 4 June 2013 20:49 (ten years ago) link

i've barely used the gun/crossbow at all yet. i used sleep darts on the weepers in the sewer and i used the gun once when surprised by scary assassins but that's it. it feels lazy to use projectile weapons in the context of the game.

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 4 June 2013 20:53 (ten years ago) link

i used sleep darts all the time (and remember some tough spots near the end when i was out of them, it must have been in the flooded district), but was playing stealth so i had all the time in the world to carefully aim (which i think is the secret reason why i love stealth games).

same here, did stealth & didn't kill anyone as usual (well, i think i assassinated the guy that the shopkeeper wanted me to take out, just to see what would happen).

the main levels felt pretty meaty, especially the second one (streets/dock/hatter hideout). the old gang leader who wants you to put him out of his misery (although doing so will gas every one in the building) was a nice decision point. i'm sad there isn't any more to play.

so i bought THIEF for the xbone but my wife saw it and now she wants to watch me play it, which is good, except that now i can only play it when she's around.

so i bought DISHONORED w/ all the DLC for the pc so i am going to do a HEAD 2 HEAD comparison as i never beat dishonored on console.

(thief is nowhere near as bad as reviews have it, i kinda think reviewers don't remember/never played OG thief games?)

adam, Friday, 7 March 2014 22:36 (ten years ago) link

played dishonored on xbox, liked it, got near the end but somehow lost interest (some escape-from-sewer level seemed real unfun). however i fancy checking out the dlc, but on my pc. am i screwed by not having my savegame available or do the dlc games start from scratch with a new character?

NI, Saturday, 8 March 2014 05:44 (ten years ago) link

I stopped playing Dishonored a couple of hours in (it was great, but I'm shit at stealth games and I had important drinking and sleeping to attend to) but IIRC the DLC episodes start totally from scratch and have you playing a totally separate character with a different set of powers.

CAROUSEL! CAROUSEL! (Telephone thing), Monday, 10 March 2014 01:22 (ten years ago) link

I always thought the strength of Dishonored was that you could play it even with shit stealth skills. Just remember to ice dudes one at a time, and you should be fine.

Corpsepaint Counterpaint (jjjusten), Monday, 10 March 2014 15:10 (ten years ago) link

so far thief is very janky and obviously not the wide-open low-res low-poly-count playground of 1998 but it is a much better stealth game than dishonored. dishonored is better for creative slaughter but i still don't like its fingerwagging moralism or whimsical whale oil neil gaiman tapdance steampunk vibe.

adam, Monday, 10 March 2014 15:38 (ten years ago) link

thief's steampunk vibe is darker and somehow less annoying? i dunno. writing in both games is garbage, big surprise.

adam, Monday, 10 March 2014 15:40 (ten years ago) link

giving me all these fun tools for murdering people and then fussing at me for using them is imo a weird way to make a game/make a point about video violence and the lust for blood that lives within us as gamers or whatever.

i can dig that. blink is really one of the most fun things in a game in recent memory.

adam, Monday, 10 March 2014 16:53 (ten years ago) link

that first dlc (as daud) was great, prob more fun than the main game though much too short. 2nd dlc isn't as fun so far (2nd level in, in the streets where there's a war between two rival gangs) but still v glad i started this back up. is that the end of it all now or are they planning more dlc? i see dishonored 2 is being touted about so that's probably it, bah

na (NA), Thursday, 17 November 2016 15:41 (seven years ago) link

this is pretty great. very similar to the first one but the level design might be even better. somehow it doesn't feel like 'fetch quests' when you're criss-crossing the same area for different objectives, and most of environments are so detailed.

also the tiny fonts on everything keep reminding me to make an appointment to update my glasses prescription.

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Wednesday, 30 November 2016 19:38 (seven years ago) link

yeah enjoying this. i am so bad at stealth tho. i get impatient or just press the wrong button and fire my gun, then all hell breaks loose. my character is already "high chaos". though on one level i did find a big pipe high up in the sky and strolled to the finish.

the tiny fonts thing is so fucking annoying and in every game. i have fairly good eyesight and don't wear glasses and it's maddening.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 30 November 2016 22:43 (seven years ago) link

i'm going full stealth, no murders. at first i was constantly re-loading saves every time all hell broke loose. i still am, but it's happening slightly less frequently.

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Wednesday, 30 November 2016 22:56 (seven years ago) link

i feel like i generally don't have the time to play a game enough and get stealthy. it's also a bit emotionally/morally unintuitive - like in the second city by the docks i overheard some rotund jerk throwing his weight around at his workers, like threatening and hassling them, so far as videogame morality goes, i did the right thing by maiming him fatally and throwing him into the sea. but all the workers ran away screaming and i was the bad guy! sad!

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 30 November 2016 22:58 (seven years ago) link

haha. that's very realistic!

i definitely save it for when i have a decent block of time to get into it, but you can deal with rooms or scenarios as smaller chunks, and i love that you can save at any moment.

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Wednesday, 30 November 2016 23:46 (seven years ago) link

i was a bit unimpressed by how it looked, to begin with, possibly in comparison to witcher 3, but there's definitely some really nice character to the buildings and the cities.
