"virginity" poll moved to ILTMI?

I'm not really protesting. I'm just curious to know why this thread was moved. I decided to start it after seeing the "How many sexual parners..." and the "Have you paid for sex?" threads in ILE, and thought it was an interesting related question... is there anything more personal offensive or offensive about it? Thanks.

i didn't move it, but i concur with whoever moved it as being more ILTMI appropriate. it's got nothing really to do with offensiveness that i can see.

speaking for myself only i'm finding this latest trend of polls revolting on a personal level but that's neither here nor there from a modding POV

OK, I agree, but then why are the other two threads I mention appropriate for ILE?

touch my bum / this is life (daavid), Friday, 24 July 2009 02:22 (fourteen years ago) link

i didn't move it either, but i support the move. iltmi was created for topics such as these. i'd be happy to move the others as well if consistency is what you crave.

tehresa, Friday, 24 July 2009 02:22 (fourteen years ago) link

I don't care, I was just wondering if there was something more inappropriate about this one? Well I do care, I was genuinely interested in the POLL results and I don't think many people are gonna vote now, but no big deal really...

touch my bum / this is life (daavid), Friday, 24 July 2009 02:30 (fourteen years ago) link

it's like training a dog. once they realize their food dish has been moved to another place, they will adapt. but i believe that board was created by user request so that polls/threads of this nature could have a home where tmi could be discussed willy nilly, so why not move them to an appropriate board?

tehresa, Friday, 24 July 2009 02:33 (fourteen years ago) link

and furthermore, as abbott mentioned last night, some people don't want this sort of thread on their site new answers at work, so if they choose to leave iltmi off their site new answers, it helps to put this kind of thread there.

tehresa, Friday, 24 July 2009 02:39 (fourteen years ago) link

OK, makes sense to me too. I was unaware of the existence of ILTMI until today, that's why I decided to post it on ILE.

I don't really think every sex-related thread should be automatically moved to ILTMI, otherwise it would be flooded by them. ILE had a lot of sex threads in the past, and I haven't seen that many complaints about them, I'm sure most folks are perfectly fine with them. I can't imagine a relatively innocent thread like "How many sex partners you've had?" really offending anyone on ILE, as far as I know no there's no TMI content in that thread. I think only threads that might be considered too icky or controversial should be moved to ILTMI, otherwise keep it as it is.

Tuomas, Friday, 24 July 2009 07:47 (fourteen years ago) link

then what should ILTMI be used for then?

For threads with Too Much Information, obviously. For example, "Have you tasted yourself?" = a subject that could be considered icky by many folks, so you should post that to ILTMI (as Abbott did). "How many sex partners have yo had?" = not really an icky question, no reason why it shouldn't be on ILE if that's where it was posted.

Sure, but do the mods think all sex-related threads should be moved to ILTMI? Because I don't really see much TMI content in the virginity and sex partners threads.

Tuomas, Friday, 24 July 2009 08:03 (fourteen years ago) link

I think moving it to the TMI board would give people more license to discuss some of these questions more frankly. I guess the issue is if people perceive the TMI board as having some sort of stigma, which I don't.

ILTMI has VD - don't post there

velko, Friday, 24 July 2009 08:07 (fourteen years ago) link

Sarahel, I think those polls were started on ILE because the poll starters wanted to get a comprehensive number of votes. A lot more people read ILE than ILTMI.

hey guys some people just don't like seeing you weirdos talk about your sex lives

If there are threads called "At what age did you lose your virginity?" or "How many sex partners have you had?", you should probably know sort of discussion they contain, so don't click on them. The argument that these threads make people uncomfortable is pretty weird, because no one's forcing anyone to read them. Personally, I don't much care for sports, but I still don't think all sports thread should be banished to a special "I Love Sports" board. I think it's good that ILE has a wide variety of different thread topics at any time.

this might have more to do with your recent creation of a board for topics of a sexual nature rather than the new crop of moderators.

The board is not called "I Love Sex" but "I Love TMI". It was supposed to be a board for the sort of discussion that many people consider too icky/graphic/personal, not a board for all sex-related threads, no matter how innocent/nonpersonal/nongraphic they are.

Just to make it clear, I have nothing against the mods, and so far there's only been a handful of thread relocations. I'm merely hoping this doesn't become a new policy that covers all sex-related threads.

It wasn't a request for details or anything graphic, it was simply asking the age. A reasonable stastic.

Moved to ilTIM bcz of harbl & PP's comments and bcz 'sexually themed threads devolving into psychosexual meltdowns & character assaults' has been a thing lately (unfortunately); if this is a dumb overreaction I can move the classy talk of this exciting thredd back to ILE.

I said why, I offered to move it if it bugged people, what more do you want? Is this a purloined letter – you can't find the answer bcz it's in the most obvious place?

It made sense to me that it IF people thought it was an undue executive decision, that they'd reply to that post and be like 'uh Abbott geez put it back where it was you sillypants.' Or that's what I was thinking. Did not know until other mods pointed it out that this thread (this very one here) existed.

Abbott, I read your explanation and it's perfectly fine, but since several other sex-related threads were moved from ILE to ILTMI within the last few days, it seemed like there's a new mod policy going on, and that's what we're discussing here. No way am I accusing you or any other specific mod, just asking if there indeed is a new policy, and whether such a policy would make in sense. blobfish russian (harbl), Friday, 24 July 2009 19:39 (fourteen years ago) link

This is much ado about nothing.

There is no specific policy regarding sex threads and where they "belong". Everyone's threshold for TMI is different so there will always be argument about whether a thread should have been started there or or not if it is the least bit personal/controversial. I think Abbott's reasoning is rational; it doesn't mark a new moderation policy or a new trend in moderator action.

If people are okay with it, I'd like to lock this thread now; it seems to be moving rapidly towards circular repetition of the same points counterpointed with sniping and I would like to not have that.

Or, since the moved threads were polls, maybe they were just interested in getting a more general result and more general opinions? People who read ILTMI are a smaller and probably kinda skewed group, so to it would make perfect sense to post a poll to ILE if you want a less skewed result.

I think the main issue here is the fact the the thread starter didn't ask for the thread to be moved. I think there's mitigating circumstances in the fact that the poll was moved after the results came in, so it wasn't as if the audience was limited during the voting period.

In general, we avoid moving threads unless the creator asks for them to be moved. There are times when mods will use their discretion to move a thread to a board where it makes more "sense"; this isn't a frequent occurrence and shouldn't be expected every time a thread pops up in an unexpected location, but it may happen from time to time. The timing around this, right after a series of contentious poster/moderator interactions over threads of a similar nature, is what is causing consternation here. We don't intend to nanny every thread onto an appropriate sub-board.

I'm not going to lock the thread since people are still talking but from a mod standpoint I think we're set with this issue.

tbqh i find the "we just want the most people to vote so we can get a better sample" position a bit disingenuous since, y'know, the results of an anonymous internet poll are useful for exactly nothing.

call all destroyer, Friday, 24 July 2009 19:59 (fourteen years ago) link

the 4 threads listed are all the sex related polls, i think there were more non poll ones as well (including the "hookers" one i locked)

I think there's mitigating circumstances in the fact that the poll was moved after the results came in, so it wasn't as if the audience was limited during the voting period.

Er, no, actually the thread was moved almost immediately after I started it, poll ends in 4 days.

But I don't really care that much, it is still getting quite a few replies in ILTMI and that's what I wanted, and I also think Abbot's point makes sense.

I remember after the 2004 and 2008 American presidential elections every other thread on ILE was about the election. I'm sure that was kinda irritating to many non-American posters, but does that mean they should've been moved to a "I Love Elections" board?

tuomas, it's not a tomato tomahhhto thing, here. that's like saying the bbc shouldn't talk about american elections because the anchors also don't talk about tasting their own semen on air.

I mean, sometimes ILE simply goes throught phrases were people post similarly-themed threads inspired by previous threads. Usually these sort of waves wane off after a few days, so I don't think they require any special modding, unless they turn into trolling.

I was just responding to your comment upthread that there were other sex-related threads on ILE new answers besides the polls, I didn't think you moved the threads or anything.

Mods would probably be more likely to move threads about American politics to an I Love Elections/I Love Politics board if one existed. Since one doesn't exist, there isn't any point to the hypothetical question.

I don't know why this is generating so much conversation considering the poster who created the thread and the moderator who moved it have both posted stating that they see eye to eye on what happened.

when the zing crew weren't allowed decide for everybody else which zings were too zingy, then it's consistent that the TMI crew aren't allowed to decide for everybody else what TMI is too TMI-y.

those threads make me uncomfortable because i am repressed, and there is a board on which they are explicitly on topic.

pretty much the only board which people ignore and use ILE instead is ILF, and that's just because the film crew are sociopaths. Nothing wrong with ILTMI.
