So a guy goes into a thread, announces that he's going to troll, proceeds to troll and you somehow managed to humour him.

tsrobodo, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 10:25 (eleven years ago) link

As far as I know the thread wasn't about Mordy at all until a load of people who didn't understand what he was doing started jumping on him, and it's not about Mordy now.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 10:42 (eleven years ago) link

I dont see how him announcing he's trolling gives him any kind of pass, frankly. It is irritating even more because it is overt!

乒乓, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 17:22 (eleven years ago) link

i have strong opinions about the future of jewishness in america - i think the different denomination thing is a historical anomaly and we're trending towards the pre-war model, aka everyone is jewish and ppl make private decisions about their levels of observance. you see this with chabad a lot - people who are otherwise non practicing but identify + participate in an orthodox community. u see this reflected in demographic statistics where orthodox schools + synagogues are growing and conservative/reform schools and synagogues are losing members (mostly to assimilation) and closing.

Mordy, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 17:24 (eleven years ago) link

i should say "everyone is *just* jewish" i don't mean to suggest that pre-war all those irish were actually jews

i was going to start a thread a week ago for crazy things i learned in Talmud tractate Sotah but i got lazy. anyway, here's a cool list:

Twelve Princes of Ishmael

Nebaioth
Kedar
Adbeel
Mibsam
Mishma
Dumah
Massa
Hadad
Tema
Jetur
Naphish
Kedmah

Twenty-three Chiefs of Esau
Teman
Omar
Zepho
Kenaz
Korah (A)
Gatam
Amalek
Nahath
Zerah
Shammah
Mizzah
Jeush
Jalam
Korah (B)
Timna
Alvah
Jetheth
Oholibamah
Elah
Pinon
Mibzar
Magdiel
Iram

All of them ^ plus Joseph threw their crowns on Jacob's coffin in Egypt out of respect acc to the Talmud. Fun facts.

Mordy, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 18:28 (eleven years ago) link

oops, I made a mistake, not in Egypt, they did this in Caanan.

Mordy, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 18:29 (eleven years ago) link

is that canon?

乒乓, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 18:30 (eleven years ago) link

some level of canon. Rashi writes the list and gets most of it from various passages in the Tanakh but there is some debate about exactly how accurate the list is. a lot of it comes from Chronicles I 1:43-54, which lists some rulers who didn't rule until after the funeral, and Rashi doesn't account for any princes of Keturah (even tho the Talmud says they were present as well) so different commentators (Tosofos Shantz, Maharsha, Tosofos Rosh) give slightly different lists.

Mordy, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 18:40 (eleven years ago) link

another fun fact: Potiphar bought Joseph originally for illicit sexual relations, so the angel Gabriel came and turned him into a Eunuch. That's why his name is originally written in the Torah as Potiphar and then later as Potiphera. Later on Potiphar's wife tried to sleep with him, thus giving us the famous song:

Outside of "honoring" specific women (i.e. giving them an award), it's almost exclusively used in the conservative religious context, says my google searching.

in grade school gym/phys ed we weirdly had to do like two weeks of square dancing every year. no idea why. but one of the tunes began by demanding that you 'honor your partner' and 'honor your corner', which meant bowing shallowly to the person of opposite gender on either side of you.

Use in square dancing, the dance where rules are barked at you, is probably the strongest argument one could make for the term's conservative foundations.

i am trying to figure out why this stuff makes me so mad. it's not like i think the privilege paradigm is perfect. and when Mordy is posting about how people's investment in identity politics obscures class structure, i think he often has a point. but other times, you, darragh, and Mordy, seem to me to take a fundamentally ungenerous position in what you call the privtalk discussions, where because the conversation is structured around experience, you a priori don't get to seem "smart" and because seeming "smart" is the highest good, those conversations have no value. lol i know but it reminds me of grad school.

horseshoe, Thursday, 19 September 2013 03:45 (ten years ago) link

have you read walter benn michaels, Mordy? i think you would like walter benn michaels, if not.

i'm sorry. of course you do know what it's like to have a particular group's experiences that are not your own taken as universal. but i do think your own sense of what counts as an interesting conversation performs a similar exclusion. i find it hard to reconcile your sensitivity to minority experience in that post with some of your posts in the "privtalk" discussions/arguments.

xp ilx has sometimes been that kind of board. people don't know when they're doing it! and people who feel excluded don't always feel comfortable pointing it out/

horseshoe, Thursday, 19 September 2013 04:09 (ten years ago) link

i understand that ppl feel alienated. i don't believe that feeling gives ppl conversational authority. just like when someone disagrees w/ me on anti-semitism thread that something is anti-semitic, i try to argue logically/historically about why i think eg bibi paving a wall w/ blood might be anti-semitic. i don't tell them that they're privileged and can't understand what i'm saying bc of it. sensitivity to minority experience doesn't equal 'privtalk.'

ah xps, the heart of it!

i only despair at dayo, f'rinstance, when he uses me as an example of yr standard ignorant oppresoor privilege denier on a thread i've not posted on in weeks and then refuses to engage if i call him on it twice

but he's still one of my v favourite posters, no spillover as i said.

again, yes i can see that for me to be all 'hey man let's thrash it out and argue about this stuff no holds barred no hard feelings mannnn' is a position that i should more than likely step away from because ppl who are deep into this in a way i am not will naturally take it to heart in a way i won't. but eh like tbrr imo there's still ways to carry on on ilx and there's ways not to, unrelated to w/e is being discussed.

but other than that i don't see any issue at all with my disagreeing (completely) with posters that i like and admire on this or any other subject

Fizzles, Thursday, 19 September 2013 04:54 (ten years ago) link

tbh I think part of the problem is the sheer number of posters who are often trying to communicate a variety of experiences/nuanced opinions but then might all go 'wtf @ honor, Mordy' (for example) on one particular point. And then it seems like ILX is one singular hivemind where every post isn't just a random lol or jibe or single point but also implicitly seems to endorse whatever went before (to the person feeling got-at).

e.g. when Mordy requested that emil.y use the word 'patriarchy' in a certain way, that just tickled my sense of irony so I posted an offhand comment and then was accused of saying something utterly different. I know that happens a lot on ILX but I think volume of posts from different people who might have individual points to make just kind of get lost in a big amorphous blob of ~something about privilege~ and the thread of any particular argument is lost in what seems like a pile-on.

I don't want to get too deeply into this conversation but can I throw a conversational bomb into the mix about how "passing" is a two-way street, one direction involving people taking on a cultural identity based on their looks and the other involving how people assign default cultures to people based on their perceptions of them and that you don't have to actively participate in part A to benefit from or be hurt by part B, and then run away?

Words and language are powerful tools by which an individual can express ideas, whether abstract, actionable, or concrete. As a writer and editor, I know firsthand that language and the meanings we attach to words very much impact, influence, develop, and change the attitudes that we have toward the subjects of discussion. That is why people are easily insulted or upset by word choices. Changing a phrase — even if it holds the same literal meaning — alters the subtle connotations and nuances of the speech, and communicates a different meaning and context than the original phrasing.

feel like this indicates some of the areas that could be debated separately from arguments about privilege

i'm not at all chill; that's why Mordy and you so successfully get under my skin when dismissing identity politics, dmac. irl i get tagged as angry more times than not. that's my secret: i'm always angry.

horseshoe, Saturday, 14 February 2015 22:50 (nine years ago) link

i've endeavored not to get involved in "identity politics" argument as of late but in my experience (mostly irl) i have had many chill conversations w/ ppl who are passionate about these particular issues. it's really only on the internet that i find commentators who seem to be -- idk -- like looking for a fight? or maybe looking to yell at someone as a surrogate for all the other shit they've heard + thought about? but i don't think that describes u at all - i always find you sincere and thoughtful. really the ppl who have historically pissed me off the most on ilx are [i'm putting on my most unsympathetic hat here - i'm sure other ppl see them as important allies] white males who seem like they're trying to earn extra credit by attacking someone whose position might not even be in contradiction w/ [identity studies] but just w/ the superficial politically angry subset that they feel will get them the most traction in online communities. i know it's unfair to call someone disingenuous or speculate about their motivations, but like all the talk of "tone policing" has obscured the fact that most of us care a lot about tone in all areas of our lives. we like to be talked to nicely, and we like to have chill conversations. that's a human thing.

Mordy, Saturday, 14 February 2015 22:58 (nine years ago) link

but like i said, i mean i'm like 30 years old now i think there are probably more important things in life than having online debates about hot leftist topics w/ ppl w/ whom i agree about 95% of things but that 5% makes us mortal enemies. so i'm working [have been working] on scaling that back considerably.

Mordy, Saturday, 14 February 2015 23:01 (nine years ago) link

one thing thats kind of odd to me abt the internet social justice scene (tho obvs not unique to it) is a. the total denial that it represents a culture b. the unwillingness to see that some ppl might find that culture obnoxious in a way that doesnt represent siding with its hegemonic enemies

idk how many times ive heard ppl express the sentiment we are just ppl who are fed up and fighting oppression, tho im sure the vast majority of ppl who have ever come close to expressing that opinion wld in safer spaces have a lot to say abt the culture of social justice

the sense of total war, projection, and aggression is pretty sad and goofy overall and often leads to an impression of ppl devoid of self awareness, the saddest part of it of all tho is obvs the enemies of social justice are very real and do need to be fought but this approach of all out internet warfare is a recipe for burnout that is destined to rob the movement of valuable people and any sort of wisdom earned through experience, just feeding more young virtual cannon fodder through the humanities to battlefield pipeline

a lot of this is prob just a symptom of our overly extroverted society in general and the same tendencies can be seen in pretty much any group you want to look at, and to be sure im just musing and wldnt pretend to have any sort of handle on the totality of the situation, also the internet warfare is really good sometimes too imo and rasies all sorts of worthy important questions that i personally at least have learned a lot from

this approach of all out internet warfare is a recipe for burnout that is destined to rob the movement of valuable people and any sort of wisdom earned through experience, just feeding more young virtual cannon fodder through the humanities to battlefield pipeline

tbf this same cycle exists in "irl" or "afk" w/e activism too--people who've read lots of critical theory going all to the wall and maybe winning a few, maybe losing a few, then realizing society still sucks and all their righteous energy is burnt up for a while. the unique danger of this stuff on the web i think is that the cycles are faster and the echo chambers longer and more hardened from the outside world: you're supported by your community and shielded from damaging things unless the damaging things are explicitly a target for you to direct antagonistic energy at, so you come out the echo chamber a spent husk disillusioned with everything in the world as much as the internecine warfare within your echo chamber.

maybe it's like okay Adorno makes it seem pretty hopeless but if he had been alive for Twitter he would've understood its revolutionary potential

Mordy, Friday, 27 February 2015 18:38 (nine years ago) link

Adorno turned his back on actual political activity, arguing that the relentless negativity of dialectical criticism was the only thing that could stay true to the progressive spirit of the Enlightenment that history had failed to actualize. This is not a far cry from the "sense of total war" lagoon describes, although it's true adorno's writings are more careful and nuanced than most tumblrs. The turn from activism to criticism ppl are describing seems to exist in the earliest texts considered part of the critical theory canon.*

jameson, especially later jameson, is pretty damn nuanced and not very easily appropriated to this or that activist agenda. despite some marxist protestations otherwise he's always seemed more interested in the status and possibility of *theory* as a discipline. im working my way through all of his stuff lately so i could be wrong.

yeah this is what i mean. i dont think a careful reading of foucault or whoever is really gonna jive with what some of these types seem to think they are doing. that's what good about theory--it's in tension with activism. this doesn't mean dont be an activist but it does allow you to critique it, and it leaves you open to critique yourself.

xps also maybe people being glib about appropriating it for their social / consumer personae, which is basically what the internet is. idk i find the good stuff p deep but i'm extremely basic when it comes to living it. hooks on patriarchy in particular since i come from a very patriarchal culture. it's tough to expand instead of be reactionary, falling into that pre-destined role/slot that rhetorically or dialectically or whatever just reinforces the prevailing pov. i think some of that "this is how it really is" from hooks is absolutely necessary (and to be fair to her as a theorist, she does create positions that are productive past that), unfortunately so many people stop there. how do you reform or reenact yourself and your relationships without contracting? that's where it gets tough imo.

I think that's otm there's also this dogmatism that argues that "this is truth/reality" as opposed to it being a paradigm or construct which is what you get more on an intellectual history level- that specifically these constructs are useful for ppl in some places and times in history but that critical theory is not about describing the truth of reality xp

Mordy, Friday, 27 February 2015 19:17 (nine years ago) link

doesn't deleuze say somewhere that there's no authentic leftism since it's always being outflanked. i wonder he'd make of twitter!

the slogan "the personal is political" is one of the more abused imo. not so much against the intent of phrase as used originally (so far as i know) but more how it now seems to license a kind of distressing "total war" of feelings vs feelings--with nary an attempt to broker anything actually "political" (in the sense of making and being bound by collective decisions with lots of different voices) in sight.

ryan, Friday, 27 February 2015 19:19 (nine years ago) link

i know i'm kind of a broken record on this but i really think all of this at its worst amounts to the valorization of vocabulary over actual political practice, the elevation of battles of small ultimate political consequence--the AngrySquad got reebok to drop rick ross for having lyrics that mentioned abusing women, great, what about the working women actually being abused while making reebok shoes? i know this isn't zero sum, but the popular approach these days counts the former as a victory and lets the latter go largely unspoken, and that's the kind of misplaced priority that really worries me.

part of the reason so much theory is abstruse is precisely because the theorists are fighting against the theory's appropriation. of course they always lose but then we always have new theories too.

this is definitely a thing, hey? similarly in journalism think-pieces about some sexism from a comedian, or some racial appropriation by a white singer are given equal importance and column inches (if not more) than like actual reportage, investigative journalism, research etc. about oppression actually operating out in the real world.

imo these theories can be powerful and change society, tho almost exclusively in small incremental ways, and the process by which that happens is the corruption of the theories themselves

lag∞n, Friday, 27 February 2015 19:36 (nine years ago) link

sure fair enough. im coming at this as a "theorist" myself (can i plug my work here?) but my main concern is to stick up for theory as a discipline without making any grand claims for it. i mean, all kinds of culture work on society the way you describe but theory seems to get people riled up more than others.

i'm sure theory is good as it exists in ryan's brain but irl any time it comes up it's super annoying; in twitter, activism, lolcollege or otherwise.

i don't consider bell hooks theory. maybe she has more academic writing but the two books i've read of hers ("ain't i a woman" and "margin to center") are very far from what i consider theory, just arguing really simple points (black women were written out of us women's history; white feminism reflects the preoccupations of the affluent white women who wrote it) in plain language with very few references to philosophy. hooks' framework (extended to include queer theory) seems like the one used by twitter sj ppl. i think it's a well-articulated + useful framework that i use all the time and changed the way i think about things

like, i've been trying to get people to re-read their Huey Newton for 10 years cause I thought their (at least on paper) confrontation of racism *and* capitalism *and* hetereo/sexism was just the kind of umbrella thinking that could be useful to bring people onto the same page but

who's gonna listen to hoos

i kinda hate how some ppl try to roll anti-capitalism into any discussion of anti-racism/feminism/etc. like obvs things ~interact~ and are not completely independent but your successor socialist utopia is still gonna be racist af if it just assumes that once we pull out the jenga piece of the profit motive all other oppressions will just fade away

flopson, Friday, 27 February 2015 20:10 (nine years ago) link

the good thing about anti-capitalism is that [almost] everyone has a personal stake in it as a system. for the vast majority of ppl any given identity politics is not to have a personal stake for them, at best they can be allies.

Mordy, Friday, 27 February 2015 20:12 (nine years ago) link

IDK man anti-capitalism is like anti-whiteness by default because of who benefits the most from capitalism, glad to hear you are anti-white ppl Mordy =)

well i'm certainly not pro white ppl! fuck those guys imo.

Mordy, Friday, 27 February 2015 20:15 (nine years ago) link

but the pt is that even among WHITEZ, the vast majority do not benefit from capitalism

Mordy, Friday, 27 February 2015 20:15 (nine years ago) link

it's funny how you start having a discussion about whatever and before you know you're having theoretical debates about the priority of capitalism. it's not so much that anyone needs but it's already there and at work.

ryan, Friday, 27 February 2015 20:16 (nine years ago) link

ppl are most smug about how capitalism is bad out of all the leftist twitter topics, like they have discovered a most beautiful secret, the thing they neglect to mention is that other things are bad too

lag∞n, Friday, 27 February 2015 20:16 (nine years ago) link

xps ha left out the key word, "it's not that anyone needs theory..."

this is exactly why black liberation politics and particularly the anticapitalism of the panthers & APOC groups is so essential to any useful analysis i think

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 27 February 2015 20:16 (nine years ago) link

imo the left will never obtain self knowledge until it faces the fact that socialism is the most #actually form of government ever theorized
