these cunts seem like typical news corp exec/'talent' level employees, riding the wilmslowwave of upscale mock tudor banality, peroxide wifelets, extramarital toilet beejes, boutique divorce lawyers on retainer and drinksodden four figure blowouts at ainstree, all the while cackling in the knowledge that they are truly avatars of the age, gazing down from on high over the routinized sadism and relentless coarseness of coalition era anglobourgie

they are the conduit between the aging post-gazza gentrified blokecult hoardes and the priapic young gods of the epl who can and will fuck anything that moves, the pornographic fantasies of the former mutating into grim menopausal fuckwant via continued proximity to the latter

truly they are evil incarnate, but what is to be done?

they both need to be ditched, in terms of improving the coverage. both way too self satisfied, gray in particular. but if it's about this incident keys is way worse. that "do us a favour love" is prehistoric shit, as is the idea that women are somehow hardwired not to understand the offside law.

Yeah, as has been noted the worst of this is the tone. I will happily admit to saying all kinds of indefensible shit in the pub or whatever, when bantering or joking, and let he who is without sin etc. But Keys sounds sub-Littlejohn on the tape, a 1950s throwback with not a trace of humour in what he's saying. He comes across as somebody who for real despises women. Gray is really only nodding and mumbling agreement I think which ain't great but hey we've all got into those conversations with shocking wankers where it's easier to not intervene.

Don't give these two a red card

Why on earth should Sky presenters Andy Gray and Richard Keys be pilloried for something they said off-air?

I would imagine their considered view that women have no business running the line at Premier League football matches would be considered utterly uncontroversial by most gentlemen of a certain age.

Come to mention it, most women of a certain age would probably agree, too.

By all accounts, the lady linesman involved is a jolly good sport and wasn’t in the slightest bit offended. All the chaps said was that she didn’t understand the offside rule. I’m not sure I understand the offside rule these days, either. And I’ve been around football all my life.

Yet we’ve had a procession of po-faced feminists feigning outrage at this alleged ‘slight’. Keys and Gray have been accused of ‘appalling and damaging sexism’. For goodness sake. I’ve heard much worse said about male linesmen, not to mention referees and their parentage being called into question.

This was a private conversation between two mates that should never have gone any further. In an age when the Prime Minister’s spokesman is hounded from office for allegedly colluding in the hacking of phone messages in his previous incarnation as a newspaper editor, why should the private thoughts of two football presenters be considered less sacrosanct than those of any other public figure?

I know the old adage that you should never say anything unguarded in front of a live microphone. But we’ve all done it.

Whatever you think of what was said, there’s more than a sneaking suspicion here that Andy Gray, at least, has been set up by someone at Sky to take a fall.

Hopefully Littlejohn is next. Is he still allowed on TV?

James Mitchell, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 06:08 (thirteen years ago) link

All the chaps said was that she didn’t understand the offside rule. I’m not sure I understand the offside rule these days, either. And I’ve been around football all my life.

Yeah, and it's not your paid job on a football pitch to, mate. And no-one's suggested that you can't do it because of your gender, same as no-one who throws abuse at rubbish linesman (and god knows I do it every week), to the best of my knowledge, is suggesting they can't do their jobs because they are men. The amount of wilful point-missing all over the place wrt this is amazing.

I take it that article is by Littlejohn then, aye?

ailsa, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 08:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Biggest point-missing was a piece in The Times yesterday arguing that the lino didn't deserve this because she'd've'd to work twice as hard as any male lino to get where she was so should be cut a bit of slack. Fair enough - but the journo didn't even point out that she got the call right! The impression was all 'be nice to the lady, she's doing her best', which is very much not the way to counter the furore here.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 09:07 (thirteen years ago) link

xp That was by Littlejohn, yes.

James Mitchell, Tuesday, 25 January 2011 09:34 (thirteen years ago) link

btw, I'm absolutely fine with "lol women don't be understanding offside" as a meme and a joke. Anyone who's spent any time in a car with me will know I'm the world's worst at making cracks about women drivers, so it would be hypocritical of me to not laugh at anyone trotting out the old football cliche in the world. But Keys and Gray didn't sound like they were joking, and the totally undisguised disgust in Keys' voice when discussing Karren Brady was just vile unreconstructed misogyny.

I suspect Helen Chamberlain will be the patsy for the "go on, explain the offside rule then, GIRL" on Sky Sports on Saturday morning to make it all OK again.

David Lister drags up a completely unrelated incident to bash footballers as not only sexist but anti-semitic too. “Hearing both footballers and football commentators off-screen can be a shock to the system… [Matt Le Tissier] caused collective jaw-dropping [once saying] ‘I always enjoyed playing at White Hart Lane,’ mentioning the ground of Tottenham Hotspur, whose Jewish fans make up a large proportion of its support. ‘It was the only place where I felt I didn’t have a big nose.’ He was followed by Richard Keys, who gave one of the most witless and sexist speeches I have heard… Keys remarked that he had once glimpsed Cherie at a function. He grimaced, made noises of disgust and wondered aloud how on earth Blair could be attracted to her.”

So a few years later when I was a qualified electrician, this caution for theft would appear on enhanced CRB checks whenever I was working in schools, government buildings etc. I had to carry this shit for over a decade and it caused me what seemed like endless angst for the best part of a decade at various companies. Ought Mackay to have rendered himself permanently unemployable through his charmless interchanges with his former head of recruitment Iain Moody, or should the game allow him a route back if he shows contrition and promises to behave better in the future?

The danger here is that many are depicting Mackay as some sort of sex offender, if not a mass murderer. His crime was being busted by a vengeful former employer for a handful of texts that were undeniably much worse than the “friendly banter” the League Managers Association foolishly suggested.

Dave Whelan has been accused of antisemitism after the Wigan Athletic owner told the Guardian he believes that “Jewish people chase money more than everybody else”.

A Chinese community leader, Jenny Wong, also said Whelan was condoning racism by saying it is “nothing” to call a Chinese person a “chink”.

The comments came on the same day that one of Wigan’s shirt sponsors, the kitchen appliances firm Premier Range, announced it was ending its agreement with the club, describing its position as “untenable”.

Whelan was explaining his appointment on Wednesday of Malky Mackay as Wigan’s manager, despite Mackay being currently under investigation by the Football Association for alleged racism and antisemitism over his email and text exchanges while in charge of Cardiff City with the club’s former head of recruitment Iain Moody.

The three texts or emails Mackay had sent, Whelan said, included one describing the Cardiff City owner, Malaysian Vincent Tan, as a “chink”. In another, Mackay referred to the Jewish football agent, Phil Smith, saying: “Nothing like a Jew that sees money slipping through his fingers.”

Whelan said he saw neither as offensive, nor did he consider offensive the other text for which he said Mackay was responsible, which referred to there being “enough dogs in Cardiff for us all to go round”, when Mackay signed the South Korean international Kim Bo-kyung.

Whelan said he does not believe the reference to Smith is offensive, first explaining that he believed Mackay was only reflecting that Jewish people “love money” like everybody does: “The Jews don’t like losing money. Nobody likes losing money,” Whelan told the Guardian.

Asked whether he did not think what Mackay said was offensive, because the claim that Jews “love money” has been used as a negative stereotype, Whelan said: “Do you think Jewish people chase money a little bit more than we do? I think they are very shrewd people.” Asked if he himself believed that, Whelan, the multimillionaire former owner of JJB Sports, said yes: “I think Jewish people do chase money more than everybody else. I don’t think that’s offensive at all.”

Whelan said he did not think there was “a lot wrong” with anything Mackay said, and there was no malice or disrespect in the statement about Smith. He added: “It’s telling the truth. Jewish people love money, English people love money; we all love money.”

I feel like there's either some shit-hot Wigan PR manager whose last day in the office was a week ago or there's a completely inept one punching his desk right now.

Matt DC, Thursday, 20 November 2014 18:16 (nine years ago) link

“If any Englishman said he has never called a Chinaman a chink he is lying,” Whelan said. “There is nothing bad about doing that. It is like calling the British Brits, or the Irish paddies.”

His grandson, David Sharpe, was added to the club’s board on Christmas Eve and the common suspicion is that he will take over as chairman in the next year or so. Yet Sharpe is in his early 20s and it isn’t easy to understand what qualifies him for the position other than having a wealthy granddad. Sharpe was initially in charge of the family restaurant, Sharpy’s, outside Wigan’s ground before it was boarded up last year because of a lack of customers, costing Whelan £1.3m in the process. For Wigan it could be a long way back.

one year passes...

delightful acquittal celebration and subsequent hope-the-slag-rots across every football forum in the land today

aye, it's really depressing when you're happy that the forum you're looking at is split roughly 50/50 and this feels like the best you can hope for

glad he's not as well known across ILX as Michael Gira

the thing that really got me about the whole affair was that the other guy mcdonald was never charged with anything, despite being arguably responsible for what happened

the whole case is a total shit show, the dog whistle testimony about her sexual history - admitted in part because allegedly she used the same phrase in another sexual encounter that ched and co. say she used - probably the most wtf and worrying thing - there than the verdict and the gleeful reaction

*-* (jim in vancouver), Friday, 14 October 2016 16:46 (seven years ago) link

oh yeah and the reward offered for testimony by ched evans' father in law.

yeah seriously, the testimony of someone who had sex with her a few weeks later = what the fuck is our legal system

imago, Friday, 14 October 2016 16:52 (seven years ago) link

but lj surely if she were raped she would never have sex again?

*-* (jim in vancouver), Friday, 14 October 2016 16:58 (seven years ago) link

and surely she'd be able to give the same level of consent on one drunken night with one man as on another drunken night when one man decided to introduce another man to proceedings halfway through

This was such an important case and this verdict is just bullshit in every way.

Charlton's forum is like 80% on the right side of this, tbf. Wonder if, say, Leeds' is

I can't even click on mine, probs about 60% of them in the string up all crims (apart from rapists) brigade.

It doesn't surprise me that grim neanderthal Chris Turner is "delighted" with this result. Well done to the court for emboldening a rapist and setting a fucked up precedent of victim harassment that will embolden many other rapists for years to come.

Sometimes it seems wherever you look in this country at the moment there is no light, just creeping malevolence everywhere. It's too fucking depressing.
