Poor Puck, I hope he feels better soon.

Tracy's doing really well! She's even holding her pee at night better. (Of course I just jinxed that.) We got her a longer lead line for the back yard, so she can follow the sunny spots well into the afternoon and laze all day. Her coat's thickened up for the winter and today, with sunny skies and no wind, she has no interest in coming in and getting near a heater. (It was 26 degrees when I took her out, 46 now).

She's a tough old gal!
Puck's much livelier. If there was ever a day to go on the DL it's this one—it was 8 degrees when I woke up this morning. He has no problem with lounging in front of the pellet stove.

It's easy!

img src=the•URL•of•the•image

with html brackets () on either side. The image has to exist somewhere on the web, so start a free photobucket account. Practice on this thread!

He's such a good parent!

That's good, Ophelia, but you want to hang your head a bit lower so you can trip over your own ears. Like me.

Notice total lack of other footprints.

That's classic, for sure.

Since we put the baby gate at the bottom of the stairs, the bathroom is Puck's favorite place.

Beth Parker, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:40 (seventeen years ago) link

And this despite the fact that he had a nice cushy bed in front of the pellet stove. We finally took it away because we kept tripping over it, and he never used it.

Beth Parker, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:42 (seventeen years ago) link

Whew. Every time I see this thread on the new answers page, well...

Good to see Puck reprazentin' still.

accentmonkey, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:51 (seventeen years ago) link

To brush your teeth at the sink you have to stand with one foot on either side of him. If he's sleeping he won't even wake up, and even if he's awake, half the time he won't even move. He just waits for you to finish up and get out of his room.

Beth - how old is Puck?

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c287/expatrica/M_Ms.jpg

The one on the right in this pic is my parents' dog Molly*. I was there the day the got her and love her so much. Best and sweetest dog ever. She's 12 and although she has some trouble with her joints, she's hanging in there! Old dogs are definitely a classic.

*The other pup in the pic is Maggie who is much bigger now as the pic is a year old. She's a total monster but so ridiculously cute.

ENBB, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh! Molly is so sweet! What a gentle gaze. I'm sure she keeps young Maggie in line. I love it when older dogs crabbily reprimand puppies. Teaches them respect! Pugs can live a long, long time. I've got trouble with MY joints, and I'm not going anywhere!
Puck is 16.

Beth Parker, Monday, 26 February 2007 23:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Gentle is the perfect way to describe Molly. You're right too, she does keep Maggie in line - it's adorable! I think she honestly believes she's her puppy.
I love the pic of Puck on the dunes; It's great.

Today Puck snapped his lead in order to go visit the girl dog across the street. He's home now. BAD DOGGY.

Beth Parker, Sunday, 6 May 2007 00:39 (seventeen years ago) link

We have to put our dog down within the next week. He's got doggy dementia. We're all just heartbroken, all the time. He doesn't seem to be happy, and he can't tell which house is his, who's who, etc. He's happy when he's out playing in ponds or playing soccer in the park, but he's too worn out now to do that for more than 20 minutes. Poor old buddy. He's just the most wonderful dog. :(

Abbott, Sunday, 6 May 2007 00:42 (seventeen years ago) link

That's showing a lot of spirit for a fogey!

xpost -

That was for Beth, but applies for Abbott, too. I'm very sorry to hear about your beast, kiddo, but it sounds like it must be time.

Oilyrags, Sunday, 6 May 2007 00:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Aw, poor Buddy, and poor you, Abbott! Hugs!

Beth Parker, Sunday, 6 May 2007 00:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, it's the best decision right now. We thought he'd die of cancer, since he's been getting tumors all his life, or break a leg, or just die of old age, but to see him drifting away to nowhere like this is totally sad. At least we have one young silly, vivacious dog to alleviate the heartbreak, and new puppy coming soon too.

Abbott, Sunday, 6 May 2007 00:58 (seventeen years ago) link

I LOVE old dogs.

Spencer Chow, Sunday, 6 May 2007 01:27 (seventeen years ago) link

We met a great old dog last weekend at the water mill beside Dunster Castle in Somerset. It was a golden retriever, and its face was completely snow-white with age, and it was kind of rickety on its legs, but it was determined to get rubs off us, so we gave them.

Beth, Puck is a bit of an auld dog, isn't he?

Abbott, your poor old pup. I hope it won't be too traumatic for anyone.

accentmonkey, Sunday, 6 May 2007 09:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Abbott, does he howl? Our dog had dementia (or *brain deterioration*) which caused him to howl. The look in his eyes was just so... sad to behold.

nathalie, Sunday, 6 May 2007 09:56 (seventeen years ago) link

You okay, Abbott?

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e391/marthasminions/YouexpectmetoeatTHIS.jpg

What? You expect me to eat THIS?

Beth Parker, Sunday, 13 May 2007 02:24 (seventeen years ago) link

Instead of saying "are you going to eat that?" our dogs say "what do you have? My mammy said I could have that. She lets me. She said you should give it to me."

accentmonkey, Sunday, 13 May 2007 10:05 (seventeen years ago) link

one month passes...

Fourth of July, when it's a good thing that your dog is deaf!
Puck was kidnapped today! By an animal lover who saw him lollygagging in THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. Drivers were HONKING at him! Egads! He had slipped out while my husband was loading trash in the car. The lady took him home and called the animal control officer, who called us. He had no collar on. He hates his collar. All those annoying tags. ID tags, town dog tags, rabies vaccination tags. For fuck's sake, he sounds like a percussion section. We're going to get him a clean new collar and write his name and phone # with a Sharpie on it. To hell with the tags.

Beth Parker, Thursday, 5 July 2007 00:33 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh Puck. He is well named.

I'm thinking of getting nameplates on our dogs' collars, because anything you hang off their collars, they eventually just pull off, no matter how robust the manufacturers claim they are.

accentmonkey, Thursday, 5 July 2007 09:45 (sixteen years ago) link

I am very pleased to hear that Puck is going strong. This thread always scares me when it bumps.

Oilyrags, Thursday, 5 July 2007 15:14 (sixteen years ago) link

Our Lucy, almost 14 yrs old, is doing really great (knock on wood!). She even jumps and runs after the ball... I had bought for Ophelia. The latter laughs and giggles whenever I throw the ball at Lucy and shouts BABA.

nathalie, Thursday, 5 July 2007 15:17 (sixteen years ago) link

We should bump a "DON'T WORRY, OLD DOGS ALL FINE" thread prior to bumping this one.

Beth Parker, Thursday, 5 July 2007 15:33 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh Puck. He is well named.

He actually came to us as a six-month-old pup, already answering to the name "Buck," which seemed too macho for him, so we morphed it into Puck.

He's having some swordfish right now.

Lucy and Tracy, how are you?

Puck was VERY bad tonight, running off when I was walking on the beach. He came trot/waddling back to the parking lot almost half an hour after I had returned to the car. I was about to go looking for him with a flashlight (dark by then). He showed absolutely no remorse. Not a shred of conscience. God! I was a basket case. I thought he'd had a stroke and been swept out by the surf. Now he's asking for another walk. The GALL.

Beth Parker, Monday, 15 October 2007 00:15 (sixteen years ago) link

<3 give him some chicken.

estela, Monday, 15 October 2007 00:25 (sixteen years ago) link

As a matter of fact, we're having chicken for dinner, and he always gets the cartilage from the tips of the thigh and drumstick bones.

estela, Monday, 15 October 2007 00:50 (sixteen years ago) link

He is calling you out because you tried to bring a strange dog into the house. DON'T FUCK WITH PUCK, PUNY HUMANS! Is what he's saying there.
