jay vee have you seen Army of Shadows at film forum yet? It's a must.

Yeah, I did. Bad experience. I can't stand the hacking/wheezing/chattering crowds at FF. But I've had DVD boots of it for a couple years now. It's possibly my favorite Melville.

Yeah, exactly my thought!

I want the new Yi Yi.

Yeah, D&C and Viridiana for me too. Supposedly The Exterminating Angel and Simon of the Desert are in the pipeline.

Chairman Doinel (Charles McCain), Saturday, 6 May 2006 16:09 (eighteen years ago) link

I would love to see this with commentary (or -ies, given the situation) by all the involved parties. It's a more important counterculture moment than most people give it credit for:

I'm now going through the supplements on Harlan County USA, after watching the feature. Oh man. This is the real deal. In the new interview featurette, Kopple describes how her camera crew was attacked by belligerent picket line busters and how she had to fight someone off by swinging her microphone at him. Egads! There are so many short, impromptu, incredibly moving speeches in it, many from the wives of miners. I mean, I can't remember the last time I heard a decent speech, and this film has a ton of them. Wow...just, wow.

Ernest P. (ernestp), Saturday, 6 May 2006 21:28 (eighteen years ago) link

i'd like to see them branch out into more "experimental" things a la the brakhage set. does un chant d'amour have a dvd release yet?

joseph (joseph), Saturday, 6 May 2006 22:46 (eighteen years ago) link

They have a Myspace page:

http://www.criterionco.com/nl206/news_2-06.html

(links to Amazon 45% off sale too -- Arkadin, Young Mr Lincoln, M, Short Cuts plus...)

Like Richard Linklater, I recommend Powell & Pressburger's I Know Where I'm Going!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 18:43 (eighteen years ago) link

It looks like Un chant d'amour has only been released in the UK by BFI. (joseph, it's playing at MoMA on a bill with the Beckett-Keaton Film on Friday night & Sat.)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 18:52 (eighteen years ago) link

ten months pass...
June's release schedule is (lame-looking Claude Berri father-son shit aside) the most attractive line-up they've come up with since, well, May (if you're not an all-region-DVD-player-pwner). Well, maybe not, since their Chris Marker double feature doesn't look to be adding much new to the European set I've had for years.

But still, two Makavejev artsploitations and If... ain't bad.

I will never understand why Criterion includes fucking Michael Bay and Kevin Smith

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 16 March 2007 18:15 (seventeen years ago) link

Good lord, I must rob a bank.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 16 March 2007 18:15 (seventeen years ago) link

x-post not for THOSE releases admittedly.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 16 March 2007 18:16 (seventeen years ago) link

The new goodies for The Third Man look cool.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 16 March 2007 18:16 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm worried rewatching it now will knock If... down a few pegs, but damned if it wasn't about my favorite film ever when I first saw it as a 13- or 14-year-old.

Eric H., Friday, 16 March 2007 18:17 (seventeen years ago) link

(That was, to be clear, in the mid-90s, not 1968.)

Eric H., Friday, 16 March 2007 18:18 (seventeen years ago) link

can't believe they're doing sweet movie. mcdowell commentary on if... should be entertaining.

Edward III, Friday, 16 March 2007 18:19 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh wait. That's Michel Simon in that Berri thing. I might have to still give it a chance.

Eric H., Friday, 16 March 2007 18:21 (seventeen years ago) link

It's weird looking back on this thread now and seeing some of the Criterions that were supposedly forthcoming that didn't pan out. I hope they're still working on those Bunuel titles.

I never did a POX Criterion titles. With today's announcement, I guess I should: Sans soleil, La Jetée, 3 Women, All That Heaven Allows, Gertrud, Ugetsu, Cleo from 5 to 7, The Art of Seeing with One's Own Eyes, L'avvenura and Grey Gardens. Oh, and Balthazar. Oh, and The Naked Kiss and Ivan the Terrible. Damn, the collection's getting big.

s1ocki, Friday, 16 March 2007 18:49 (seventeen years ago) link

I haven't seen it, but I bet Sweet Movie ends up among the "most hated" Criterion movies (at least among Criterion mindsets) along with Fat Girl, Jubilee and Hopscotch.

Eric H., Friday, 16 March 2007 18:52 (seventeen years ago) link

today is the last day of a 40% off sale on all criterions on deepdiscountdvd.com

Giving a fucking Kevin Smith movie the Criterion treatment is a crime that can never be repaid.

kenan, Friday, 16 March 2007 19:59 (seventeen years ago) link

there's plenty of nutso shit in the criterion collection for people to hate on at this point, salo, symbiopsychotaxiplasm, brakhage, the ones you mentioned. sweet movie will test some constitutions, tho.

Edward III, Friday, 16 March 2007 20:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Who the hell would hate on Brakhage?

Ned Raggett, Friday, 16 March 2007 20:02 (seventeen years ago) link

or Passolini?!?!

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 16 March 2007 20:04 (seventeen years ago) link

I have not seen Sweet Movie, either, but it looks fascinating. Maybe I should see it just to hate it?

sure none of you hipster fucks would, but there are plenty of criterion collectors who are like wtf with the autopsies and pooeating (ned this is pronounced pooe-ating). internet message boards have been rife with salo-induced revulsion for years.

Edward III, Friday, 16 March 2007 20:17 (seventeen years ago) link

"hipster fuck" is a term of endearment btw

This is actually how I stumbled on the June calendar. I was going to see what some of the recently released discs were so I could fill a few gaps and buy one or two at DDD. But after looking at what's coming out in the next few months, I decided I probably shouldn't spend the money now.

Eric H., Friday, 16 March 2007 20:25 (seventeen years ago) link

That Deep Discount sale has been extended through Thursday the 22nd (and BTW, they've also got a selected Kino sale that rolls til' the 31st.)

I own very few Criterions -- not gonna fall into my music collection nightmare again... I think just Notorious, My Own Private Idaho, My Darling Clementine, and The Wages of Fear.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 20:06 (seventeen years ago) link

I HATED My Own Private Idaho. I can't find anything redeeming in it at all.

I've got the Cassavetes Five Films box, the Fanny & Alexander 5-disc box, Videodrome, Man Bites Dog, and The Royal Tenenbaums which I got used on the cheap.

Stevie D, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 20:19 (seventeen years ago) link

I hear you. The few I have are all in foreign languages so I figure I can consider them classier language instruction tapes.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 20:54 (seventeen years ago) link

According to the IMDB, it is indeed that John Vernon.

C. Grisso/McCain, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 20:54 (seventeen years ago) link

...as you've never seen him before.

I've got almost 20 criterions but I had no qualms about transferring my music nightmare to a film nightmare. godard and bergman probably account for half of them.

Edward III, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 01:00 (seventeen years ago) link

sweet movie is something else lemme tell ya.

s1ocki, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 01:06 (seventeen years ago) link

I think I know exactly what John Vernon looks like- he was a guest star on every single TV in the late 60s and the 70s, no?- but I can't remember if he was in any movies.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 01:10 (seventeen years ago) link

So broke the next few months, what with the Eclipse Louis Malle and Ozu box sets/Army Of Shadows...heaven.

Capitaine Jay Vee, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 04:16 (seventeen years ago) link

After my father ruined the Criterions I had collected over several years, he got me the almost-complete collection a few years ago. I am now out of date, and have constantly resisted the desire to catch up. I think it might be time to give in.
