is the green burrito still around?

el pollo loco loses MAJOR hps (2d20+6) for no refried beans.

San Diego has the -berto's/-berta's family of mex-am chains... 3 rolled tacos with guacamole at 3am after a particularly draining physics lab was my pallid "real genius" episode.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 21:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

I never ate at Taco Bell in HS or college. I was living at home and/or always had other means available for stuffing my face. I was a picky indie elitist in college. They did have this one neighborhood joint called Bandito Burrito which was staffed with all the pierced tattooed punk rockers from my high school and served Jarrito's sodas as well as cold beer. I think they have rock shows there now once in a while. Whatever. Point is I used to be too good to eat Taco Bell.

Having joined the AF, however, and been privy to the joys of chow hall cuisine, I now find Taco Bell to be a welcome change of pace whenever I find myself in a position to grab three gorditas and whatever's new on the menu plus maybe a crispy taco or two and no I don't want a fucking Coke with that I have Miller High Life at home. I must admit that there are times when I find that nothing else but Taco Bell will hit the spot. That shit be quintessential to the American life. I bet Madonna hates Taco Bell. Well Madonna can stuff a baja chalupa all up in her ass.

Millar (Millar), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 21:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

Done.

Bought out by Carl's Jr. That should tell you all you need to know.

Dleone, you'd take TB over Ojedas?!? Are you insane?!?

That Girl (thatgirl), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 22:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

especially swabbed with Stupid, the very hottest salsa.

I think this is funny.
How about Baja Fresh, La Salsa (still around?), Wahoo, El Torito, Baja Grill? All upscale fast food chains. La Salsa was great the first few times I ate there, tho it seemed to get blander and more "processed" tasting later. I think there may still be one inside the local Fuddrucker's.

nickn (nickn), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 22:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

Wahoo's and Baja Fresh are still worthwhile, especially Baja Fresh's two taco combo for $4.50 which is terrific.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 8 May 2003 00:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

baja fresh is over-rated.

started by some thousand oaks church lady or something.

and eff poquito mas while you're at it. safe/"fresh"/bland suburban mexican food = no fun.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 8 May 2003 00:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm also compelled to mention that the Laguna Beach Taco Bell (corner of Cleo St. and PCH) was reported to be the premiere place in town to purchase your pot in the 1970s - having a strategic location diagonally opposite the only 24 hour supermarket in town.

Don't know if that's still the case now (the Taco Bell is still there).

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 8 May 2003 00:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

total fucking classic. I'll be waiting for the bus there tonight. Thanks to my schedule I eat late their twice a week. They're the only place open late downtown except for the shitty local diner so god bless them. I usually get the chicken quesadilla but recently the Cheesy Gordita Crunch special has been my pick.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 8 May 2003 00:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

some taco bells in LA still have the old original mission style architecture, i do think that is cool (in that LA/Vegas "instant culture just add water" way).

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 8 May 2003 00:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

If only they had water in LA or Las Vegas.

dleone:

Taco Cabana? You know about that place?

*pauses*

Where are you, location-wise (aside from in your home, in some room, etc.)?

Wow. I thought for sure I'd be the only one clued in to Taco Cabana. They make good rice & (regular) beans and good corn tortillas, but that's about it. Still, it's way better than Taco Bell. ;)

Dee the Semi-Lurker (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 8 May 2003 02:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

Taco Cabana represents in TX. All of it, Dee. I would've mentioned it but I figured the five of us Texans on ILX were the only ones who knew.

(dleone is in Big D like me.)

That Girl (thatgirl), Thursday, 8 May 2003 03:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

Crazy to think I've only been there (Cabana) like 5 times. I like the fact they 1) have a 'salsa bar' with limes and hot sauce and onions etc, 2) serve alcohol and 3) have outside seating.

Aaron A., Thursday, 8 May 2003 03:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

Haha, I think the Northwesterners are too afraid to mention TacoTime... as are the Midwesterners of mentioning Taco John's

That said, a Baja Fresh just opened up in my neighborhood, and -- sadly -- it probably outdoes most of the "true" Mexican dining establishments in this city already. (I like Baja Fresh, but I'd hesitate to call it "da BOMB" or anything)

Ned hinted at Thai Spice.. the kinda fast food Thai place in Orange County.. And I'll also mention Niki's, the kinda fast food Indian place in O.C. as well. All I'll say is: DON'T GO THERE! Unless you're a fan of culinary diseases.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 8 May 2003 03:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh man I can make Brians potato tacos!! They aare GRATE! Taco tastic! I'm off for guacamole and washing powder, EE-URP!

Oh. my. god. I think even I forgot how to make those. (psst, starry, do you still have the recipe handy?)

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 8 May 2003 04:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

When I was reading the Watchmen comics I thought that the Gunga Diner Indian fast food was brilliant.

I still want one.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 8 May 2003 04:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

Brian I saved it somewhere online especially!

However I can't access it cos the site is blocked. I can sum it up basically:

BOIL POTATOES
MASH potatoes with SPICES (cumin, coriander, paprika, cayenne pepper, tabasco were the last things I put in a taco mix, I'm sure there was a bit more but can't recall) and loads of BUTTER
PUT IN TACO!

Just search on it you lazy git.

Speaking of fast food I've been told of a place in Stratford called something like Punjab King - looks exactly like McD's but when you go in it's filled with loads of indian food. The person who told me IS a complete and utter mentalist but I AM STILL GOING TO TRY IT.

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 8 May 2003 08:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

Dleone, you'd take TB over Ojedas?!? Are you insane?!?

I hate their cheese, and I don't like the chili sauce they use on enchiladas and tamales either. I way prefer Blue Goose or Uncle Julio's to Ojeda's.

Taco Bell would make a lot of money if they delivered to stoned & drunk kids in the suburbs/were open until 5am.

ROFL

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 06:53 (twenty years ago) link

we tried Taco Bell, it wasn't all that bad really, steak gorditas were just the thing when you can't be arsed to eat fancy and just want to load up. Plus they do wild cherry pepsi, which is ace.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 06:54 (twenty years ago) link

my typical order at taco bell, btw, is: 1 mexican pizza, 1 bean burrito, 1 seven layer burrito, 1 meximelt.

NO TACOS AT ALL!!!

"my typical order at taco bell, btw, is: 1 mexican pizza, 1 bean burrito, 1 seven layer burrito, 1 meximelt."

Haha. Yup. Same here. I can't be bothered to eat at certain Taco Bells. Some are dirtier than others. One way to find out is by looking at the packets of hot sauce. They tend to be open, grungy, and leaking, and then you have yr forks covered up in crud. Still, the TB nearest to my house, has always been pretty um, *gulp* hygenic, I suppose. I mean, I grew up on the stuff, more or less (that's one hell of a disclaimer right there). Well, except for that one time when the toilets started flooding the whole joint and the sme...Tune in next time, kiddos!

TB at college gave me the shits bad though. That stuff was foul. And the fizzy drinks tasted like cotton candy from hell.

There used to be a few around here (england), now I think they are all gone.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 09:13 (twenty years ago) link

The closest Taco Bell to my house is across the street from the Magnolia projects. However it is open 24 hours.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 13:03 (twenty years ago) link

The thing that happens to NA kinda happens to me, where the first whatever I get tastes good, then the next OK, then the next terrible. So I make sure to only get two food items.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 13:54 (twenty years ago) link

Adam, are you a Knoxille person, too? Or are there just lots of Taco Bells across from Magnolia projects?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 16:35 (twenty years ago) link

My craving has yet to be satisfied, god damnit.

WHY TACO BELL WHY DON'T YOU DELIVER? I could, theoretically, ride my bike there. But it's a long ride, and my food would be cold by the time I got home (and eating it there is totally unacceptable.)

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 21:51 (twenty years ago) link

they're usually open to 3AM in places where there's a lot of young people.
you don't eat it IN the actual store, but rather right outside of it.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 22:01 (twenty years ago) link

the one here is only open until 2, which is not late enough. especially because it's not within walking distance & I'm usually too fucked up to drive if it's 1:20am and I want Taco Bell.

Total Dud: their cinammon twists. GROSSNESS.

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 22:07 (twenty years ago) link

Cabana>Bueno>Bell

(and really, Cabana is several leagues better than the other two, just for serving something that looks like real meat.)

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 23:24 (twenty years ago) link

I 've never had bueno. weird huh?

i like cabana a lot but it's pricier and takes longer. i think my local tbell is open till 4am on the weekends.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 23:28 (twenty years ago) link

Taco Bueno is hit-or-miss. Sometimes Cabana-esque, sometimes sub-Bell.

All bow before Pancho's Mexican Buffet, though.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 23:36 (twenty years ago) link

Kris writes:

The worst was in New York, at a place promising "San Francisco, Mission-style" burritos; which they were somehow trying to do without offering pork or anything other than black beans. Fucking terrible!

Haha, was it in the East Village? My NYC claim of shame was going here very late one night around 2am with IAN JOHNSON AND JONATHAN WILLIAMS and paying $8 for a burrito claiming the above. What a racket.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 23:37 (twenty years ago) link

We have neither Cabana nor Bueno here. There is the Gordito Burrito in Providence, but this helps me not at all now.

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 23:38 (twenty years ago) link

ive might of said this up thread but taco bell heavily declined in taste explosions shortly after pepsico sold it.

I would like a large iced-tea.
Two, uh, two large iced-teas .

Ok, that'll be $16.07.
Out of $20?
Ok, $16.07's your change.
