haha, factoring in the 35% humidity, the heat index today topped out at 114F/45.5C.

holy crap.

this part of canada is not cooler today, jaq :( and i doubt about for the rest of the week/month too... too bad you're not going to vancouver - it's pretty much perfect there right now.

rrrobyn sharkattack battleforcenet (rrrobyn), Monday, 17 July 2006 23:15 (seventeen years ago) link

denver has cooled off to a balmy 83F with scattered showers.

it gets really hot here for like 3 weeks in the summer, but most of the time its 80-85F. which is bearable. and no humidity, which is really what makes heat fucking awful.

i've dreamt of rubies! (Mandee), Monday, 17 July 2006 23:37 (seventeen years ago) link

oh that's really bad with no humidity mandee!

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 17 July 2006 23:48 (seventeen years ago) link

heat w/ no humidity is GREAT. it's more of an endurance test than an annoyance. humidity just makes me lose it.

*yawns* So the high reached 95-plus F (35-plus C) degrees. So what? WELCOME TO SUMMER. Summer is supposed to be stifling hot with blinding sunshine and nary a cloud to protect you. Actually, what I really wanted to say is "welcome to my world and the reason why I'm so grumpy throughout summer". Oh, and air conditioning doesn't solve everything, particularly when you live in a split level and/or when your car's been out in the sun so long that the a/c system doesn't begin to be effective until you're nearly at your destination. I've given up on fighting the heat, anyway. You just have to accept it, get used to stewing in it, and hope that winter will make up for it all.

another solution: INNER-TUBING, BITCHES.

I've been out on the Jefferson River, floating in the sun and drinking beerz with pals basically every fucking weekend for the last three weeks. Plus: big cliff AND bridge to jump off!!

Humidex at 44 degrees today. Four days ago I was in perfect Vancouver. AARGHH.

I miss my high school job working in a frozen food aisle / freezer on days like this.

screw you, buddy

What a charmer you are.

another solution: INNER-TUBING, BITCHES.

This is a wise answer, though it only works on days when you're not at, um, work. Though could you imagine how office life could be improved if summertime meetings could be held while inner-tubing?

Phoenix Dancing (krushsister), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 02:11 (seventeen years ago) link

You know - I don't want to see ANY of the people I have meetings with wet and/or in bathing suits. Ever.

Aw. You don't have even the slightest bit of a morbid curiosity?

I am in school!

To beat the heat today, I am wearing off-white linen trousers. For the first time in public. I feel like I should be playing golf, on a cruise ship, with my grandfather.

The office is just intolerable today. Because our fan doesn't rotate, someone decided it should be "on each person for an hour" - which is funny because I've been here 3 hours now and it ain't been nowhere near me!

Kaet (kate), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 11:05 (seventeen years ago) link

fucking hell it's hot!!!

dude, does three degrees make that much difference? once it's over 30 degrees, you melt.
people who like the heat/summer are just PHR34KS. the worst are the ones who buy CHOCOLATE in this heat. hahahahahaha they walk around for hours with the pralines thinking the cool bags will help. but yeah seriously, i just don't enjoy the heat. gimme the autumn and winter, it fits my gloomy mood.

i'm off to drink 5467867867 gallons of water to get rid of my blasting headache.

which is funny because I've been here 3 hours now and it ain't been nowhere near me!

they figure you're a *cool* rocker chick. ;-)

i am sitting by window. am perfectly cool.

emsk ( emsk), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 12:02 (seventeen years ago) link

Is this hotter than that mental summer of 2003? It doesn't quite feel like it yet. Although I had to get out of the sun and into the shade at lunchtime, which isn't something that usually happens to me. Admittedly I'm not usually wearing a suit in this weather either.

I've had a fan on my desk blowing in my face all day. It's been a bit of a godsend.

"If I owned Hell and Texas I would rent out Texas and live in Hell."

Milo, who said this?

Yesterday I was waiting for the bus on a bench in the shade and the breeze felt like it was coming out of an oven. Breeze begone! Also. you know it's bad when you are relived to step out of your car b/c it's cooler. the a/cs just can't keep up.

Ms. Misery TX (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 12:07 (seventeen years ago) link

Ugh I am having the exact same problem with my car's a/c.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 12:18 (seventeen years ago) link

I took my Year 10 students who were melting in the heat to work in an air-conditioned computer room this morning. After half an hour they were complaining it was too cold*. You can't win sometimes.

*It is very sophisticated 21st century aircon with two settings - "On" and "Off".

I found myself doing housework at 1am as it was the only time that it felt bearable to be moving about. I made the mistake of opening the windows at night and found myself chasing huge moths round the house. Does citronella work on them? I tried burning lavender oil but it didn't seem to have any effect.

leigh (leigh), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 12:24 (seventeen years ago) link

You must have a hole in one of your window screens. Wad a piece of duct tape on it.

The price of gas has me keeping the AC off and opening the windows. I don't really like all that wind and noise, but most of my driving is short hops. I can stand it.

I'm going to haul many bags of pine-bark mini-nuggets up a steep hill today, and the perverse thing is that I'm looking forward to it. Donkey work! I'll get started as soon as I can tear myself away from ILE.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 12:28 (seventeen years ago) link

People in Scotland don't normally have window screens, do they?

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 12:29 (seventeen years ago) link

We don't have window screens in the UK.

Air conditioning is struggling to keep up today. Still feels hot in the office. I really can't stand this heat!!

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 12:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Apparently dried lemon peel is good for deterring moths.

I am quite fond of the moths compared to the other bugs that have invaded in this heat - flying ants and big red spiders.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 12:33 (seventeen years ago) link

How about those adjustable screens that fit various width windows? In the event of freak invasions of annoying moths.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 12:33 (seventeen years ago) link

Murths?

C J (C J), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 12:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Insects and bugs I have evicted nicely from our living room, yesterday:

Wasp
Bee
Dragonfly
Tiger Moth
Moth (other)
another dragonfly

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 12:35 (seventeen years ago) link

We just have a million house spiders. If we got rid of them we'd probably be buried in whatever smaller bugs they're subsisting on, or so I justify my casual vacuuming.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 12:44 (seventeen years ago) link

We don't have window screens in the UK.

Well this would explain the moth problem. Get some!

Ms. Misery TX (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 12:45 (seventeen years ago) link

I mailordered some screens for our living room windows, but that was to keep the cats from getting OUT. It does help a bit with moths, but they get in anyway through the kitchen window, which isn't suitable for screens (opens outwards). That's all we get really, moths and occasionally wasps or daddy long legs.
