The Merchant ain't bad. That wine bar (The Majestic) next door is pretty nice too.

Oh yeah, another food thing:

Edward's Steakhouse sucks. I asked for my Sirloin Steak medium rare and they burned it. Considering it was the most I ever paid for a steak ($30) I expected a little better.

BTW, I just saw that Bright Eyes is going to play the Loew's Theater in Journal Square. I'm not a particular fan, but this is great for JC. I really want that Loews to become a full-fledged concert venue. Apparently Bright Eyes did this once before and it was a big success.

I don't live in JC, I work in JC.

Where exactly is Comfort? It sounds good.

Have you ever tried Tanya's on Grove Street? Supposed to be good.

Now over at the Square we have Casa Dante on Newark Ave. First class Italian restaurant. If you've never tried it, by all means make a reservation some evening.

We also have the VIP diner on Kennedy Blvd. For a cheap, but good red sauce Italian, try the Parmigiana House. This place is in the basement of a bar on Kennedy Blvd next to Boulevard Drinks and the police annex. It can be a little intimidating when you first come upon it, but the people are friendly enough.

I've eaten at Comfort a bunch of times. It's soul food - usually it's good but the last time I was there it was really bad and I'm a bit traumatized.

There's a younger black man and woman and and older black woman, who I think are the family that own it, that usually do the cooking. The one bad experience I had was when this young white guy with a crazy goatee and a young white woman were cooking, so you might want to avoid going if those two are there.

Anyway, prices are reasonable, service is slow, and if you don't get unlucky the food can be fantastic.

I don't think I've tried Tanya's, no.

Hurt, that theater is amazing, I saw a Pharmacists show there a few years ago and it was only about half-restored but nothing was roped off so when I got bored with Calvin Johnson (which took about 15 minutes), I wandered around the place and drooled. Have you been to the movies there? I never went but they've had film nights, apparently.

There is a volunteer group that is working on the restoration of the theater. It's been a slow process but it continues. If you have the time you might want to join them. They do a lot of their work on weekends.

I saw, appropriately, "Forbidden Planet" at Loews Jersey. How is the music sound there tho? The movie speakers were pretty dicey (tho they did have "FP" in its tri-stereo Perspecta glory).

The show I saw was held in the front lobby, because the proper auditorium was mid-restoration. The fact that they could hold a Pharmacists/Calvin Johnson show in the lobby should be an indication of the size of the place, it's like a train station in there. I imagine the acoustics in the main audit. are fairly good since it was built to accomodate the live orchestral accompaniment to silent films (I spose that doesn't prove anything, it could still be crap, but I have hope).

It's called the Parmigiana House. Lunch specials are about $6.00 and they have heroes and salads. Nothing fancy, but inexpensive good Italian food. It's not McCrory's BTW, it's C H Martin's.

Hey, do any of you folks have landlords that you would recommend that have other places available? Might be looking to move in town.

two months pass...

Recent weeks have seen the opening of not one but two gourmet food stores in town -- GO at fifth and Jersey, and Hourglass on Jersey between Columbus and Newark. Hourglass seems to be the better of the two. At last, a place to get decent cheese.

Hourglass is INSANELY expensive. More so by a longshot than even Manhattan. My question is whether or not it's jumping the gun; I don't know if this neighborhood's gentrified enough to keep it afloat yet.
3.25 for ginger soda? Meanwhile, at the bodega across the street that gets you lunch and at the Polish grocery a half block down, that equals a big ol' carton of sour cherry juice with change even.

two weeks pass...

Was able to get some of my gift-shopping done at Janam Tea. Can't really say how it runs price-wise, because there isn't much to compare it to (not a lot of Indian tea shops around). The tea itself seems pretty fairly priced for what it is. Some of the other items, pots and mugs and whatnot are a bit pricy. Anyway, it was really nice to be able to get a couple of people in my family unique, aesthetically-pleasing and good tasting things while avoiding the mall.

And the BIG new Dosa place on Newark Ave. (Sri Ganesh Dosa Palace -- I think) is great. GREAT. Really fresh, delicious dishes and super cheap.

Has anyone ever been to the record shop on Bergen Ave.? I think it's called Stan's -- somehow I never knew it was there even though I've driven past it. Anyway, seems like a funny little JC institution -- the guy seems to specialize in old soul and doo-wop and stuff like that and mainly carries records. He had some kids coming in to buy hip-hop though and knew what was what when they asked him questions. I bought a couple little posters off him -- a Modern Jazz Quartet and a Lightin' Hopkins that are both pretty cool lookin.

Jersey City has been very expensive to buy for the last few years, especially the area near the Grove St. PATH station. The cost of purchasing has way outpaced the cost of renting though. I rent. Which is not to say rents are cheap, but there are still reasonable deals out there. As far as buying, I'd recommend waiting to see if things cool down a little, because they've been absurdly hot here, and the hype has even inflated the prices in other JC neighborhoods that have less to offer.

The NYC area is all pretty absurd. But I don't know your price range. My friend's 2-bedroom condo in the Grove area that he bought a few years ago would now go for about $400,000. There are a bunch of nu-construction high rises going in that I've seen advertising condos for as little as 2 or 300,000.

By contrast my friend bought a rowhouse in South Philly, in sort of a working class neighborhood, for under $100,000. His mortgage and taxes are like my rent.
