in general he is really tied up with that "celebrity photography art" genre which while contributing nothing of any great value to the world, no doubt has its serious talents.

i don't know how to judge this stuff tbh. never read upscale magazines. probably old-fashioned enough not to call photoshoots of actresses "art" unless they're s.thing really special and i can't think of an example. i'd call a good one "good" though, and TR's thing is just sexie ladies looking sexie/a bit edgy. i've not been minded to seek out pix of tel with his nob out though.

if by "sexie" you mean washed-out and posing against a white wall with no fill light then yes

well, here's a shot of january jones:

idk... she looks better in the show. but not too shabs here either. it's a picture of a hot girl. it's hard to fuck that up to an extent.

I like his 'aesthetic' (aforementioned white wall, onboard camera flash, vignetting) which creates these really flat images, but the pervo content is a bit much and too vice mag

that shot is really unrepresentative of his work xp
yeah that's kind of what i was getting at by choosing it
he's just a highly paid photog
none of his stuff has any depth
but is it meant to? it's for guys who might buy an expensive watch to jerk off to iirc

I dunno compare his work to say, annie liebovitz and there's a pretty big difference

And, let's clarify: you don't love women just because you have sex with them and like taking pictures of their ladyparts. I'm not saying that's all Richardson does, but "love" entails "respect" and also "the basic human decency to not use pictures of someone's lady parts for your photography show without her permission" and also "the basic human decency to not pressure a girl into giving you a hand job because OH MY GOD I WILL LITERALLY NOT BE ABLE TO PRESS THE FLASH BUTTON ON MY CAMERA UNLESS YOU TAKE NOTICE OF THE FACT THAT I HAVE NO PANTS ON. ALSO I'M A PROFESSIONAL."
― cleggaeton (suzy), Monday, 17 May 2010 12:18 (fourteen years ago) link
haha ZING! and I liked this bit too
...I can already see the comments reading "You feminists are so uptight! Let a stranger manipulate you into doing weird things to him for once in your life, gosh!" (Even though I hope there aren't people who view this as a strictly feminist issue-it's a HUMAN issue. As in, this shouldn't be happening to any human, no matter their gender, though it's worsened by the fact that being male gave him more power.)

There is a vibe in fashion that only losers or The Worthy complain about the exploitation of people working professionally in the industry, the idea being that successful people have more important things (and people) to worry about. A commenter at Tavi's blog pointed out that such indignities would never befall Anna Wintour's daughter - which is kind of the point Tavi is trying to make, that this is a bully who preys on the powerless on those occasions he can.

Exactly. Nobody with even the vaguest interest in fashion could have been under any illusion about him being a vile predator but it's good to see the right thing being done, if only for the wrong reasons.

nb the article i linked is reading more into the nymag article than i think is reasonable ... but then i came away from reading the ny mag article thinking terry was a bigger scumbag than i thought so idk why it's being seen as esp. forgiving
the headline on the nymag article, though, def sets a really stupid tone

like, i see these two paragraphs next to each other:
But he seems either unaware of or unwilling to acknowledge the ways in which coercion can be unspoken and situational. A prominent photography agent identifies the potential for abuse. “Kate Moss wasn’t asked to grab a hard dick,” this person says. “Miley Cyrus wasn’t asked to grab a hard dick. H&M models weren’t asked to grab a hard dick. But these other girls, the 19-year-old girl from Whereverville, should be the one to say, ‘I don’t think this is a good idea’? These girls are told by agents how important he is, and then they show up and it’s a bait and switch. This guy and his friends are literally like, ‘Grab my boner.’ Is this girl going to say no? And go back to the village? That’s not a real choice. It’s a false choice.”
Someone who’s spoken with Richardson about the Kibosh project recalls him describing his feelings with some nuance. “He said, ‘I was really up front about the kind of work I was making, and it came from pain; it was an expression of the pain and trauma I’ve experienced in my life, and I’m not proud of it.’ ” In our conversations, Richardson was less introspective and more defensive. “I don’t have any regrets about the work at all,” he tells me, “but obviously I don’t ever want someone to feel like that. It was never my intention. But also, people do things, and then they have regrets, and that’s also nothing to do with me. Then don’t do pictures like that again … I’m okay with myself about everything, and that to me is the most important thing.”
It's the structure of 'both sides' but not the content. i mean, apparently a lot of people aren't reading it the way i did, so some of that has to fall on the writer—when I read the "Canyons" (lindsey lohan, james deen, etc.) piece in the new york times, it was a lot more dryly humorous. So maybe this piece is sloppier? But nonetheless, I read that last paragraph as pretty damning.
― rap steve gadd (D-40), Wednesday, 18 June 2014 07:40 (nine years ago) link
The article does raise some of the concerns but, in my view, makes the ideas that he has 'pushed his art into grey areas that some people are uncomfortable with' and 'he is a rapist and sexual predator' seem like equally defensible positions. Maybe it is projection, i don't know.
― Wristy Hurlington (ShariVari), Wednesday, 18 June 2014 07:49 (nine years ago) link
for an overly balanced article it seems to have made people universally grossed out by terry richardson, so... maybe it's not overly balanced?like you might as well show 'both sides of the story' if one is clearly super damning and then your point is made. maybe I'm misreading though.
