Ah, the Ladies Market! Mrs T is always going on about this. I cannot believe she hasn't brought me back one(or seven) of these.
― Ned Trifle II, Friday, 30 April 2010 15:39 (fourteen years ago) link
Interesting (kind of) aside - if you 'walk' down Tung Choi street on streetview the market is being put up and then as it crosses Nelson Street it's all up. OK not very interesting but I liked it.
― Ned Trifle II, Friday, 30 April 2010 15:52 (fourteen years ago) link
that's because a large portion of tung choi street is not accessible by cars
― going non-native (dyao), Friday, 30 April 2010 15:53 (fourteen years ago) link
Yeah, I assumed that that's why they went down it before the market went up. Of course they could have used the google trike.
As another aside - the adverts for schools in HK are quite cool too.http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3153/4565370153_33d125d3dd.jpghttp://farm4.static.flickr.com/3084/4566008166_a56cde3421.jpg

― Ned Trifle II, Friday, 30 April 2010 16:08 (fourteen years ago) link
hahah those are 'tutor kings' - you can get your face plastered on a billboard and the sides of buses just by being a really shitty tutor @ something. hong kong education is insane and sad.
― going non-native (dyao), Friday, 30 April 2010 16:09 (fourteen years ago) link
those guys are all "if you want to pass the A-level just follow my five patented foolproof easy steps" and then charge you $5000 and then you fail the A-level anyway
― going non-native (dyao), Friday, 30 April 2010 16:10 (fourteen years ago) link
put the snake into your house is an awesomely handy euphemism
― 鬼の手 (Edward III), Friday, 30 April 2010 16:11 (fourteen years ago) link
e.g. "those tutor kings just want to put the snake into your house"

second one is a good quotation I think?
― some men enjoy the feeling of being owned (acoleuthic), Tuesday, 1 June 2010 16:00 (fourteen years ago) link
yeah I think about half the shirts I see are just quotations lifted from books. some company did a series of philosophical terms & their definitions, so you see people wearing shirts that say, in big bold arial, "REIFICATION" or "ONTOLOGY" and then underneath is the definition in small type
― pokám0n (dyao), Tuesday, 1 June 2010 16:01 (fourteen years ago) link
but that is fucking awesome, would wear
― some men enjoy the feeling of being owned (acoleuthic), Tuesday, 1 June 2010 16:02 (fourteen years ago) link
yeah I want to find the source but it's hard because I always feel self conscious when I go into the teeny bopper malls, plus they change the styles so quickly
like I went back and tried to buy the one that said "LOOKING AT LIFE IN A STRANGE ROOM" cause I realised it was a JD lyric, but it was gone by the time I got there. I also see people wearing a shirt with a cool quote from dylan, the one that says "YOU'RE A LIAR I DON'T BELIEVE YOU" and I want to get it but I don't know where to look

just think how often you can go into a target or a wal-mart and get t-shirts with random kanji on them that translate the same way

i thought i should say something abt 'zenlike koans...' but rly i don't know enough about this cultural (epi)phenom, after all ppl w/ clothes w/ writing on them is very much a western thing too.....where does 'zenlike koan' begin and 'random semiotic soup' end?

was there ever a difference is the question
anyway I have some pretty good ones I took pics of recently but I dont wanna post them because I want them to be taken seriously, guess I'll just keep them to myself

there def is a difference between the more gnomic / witty 'koans' ones cited here and the usual t-shirt logorrhea
