yeah. i saw that page. the first one i looked at was something like dietfacts.com or something.
& i agree--it is fun research, albeit frustrating.

Yeah, I was just looking at said diet facts page.

Too bad.

I love flour tortillas. I know they're the uncool choice, vs. corn - especially when given the option of really fresh, spongy, handmade corn tortillas - but I can't help myself. I can eat 5 or 5 flour tortillas with carne asada and beans.

Burritos are too big

sexyDancer, Friday, 3 September 2004 18:46 (nineteen years ago) link

The non-profit consumer health group used nutrition information provided by three Mexican restaurants - Rubio's, La Salsa and Baja Fresh.

"mexican restaurants"

dean? (deangulberry), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, that's weird, dean.

I liked Baja Fresh ok. So that's bad for you too? SHEESH!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:51 (nineteen years ago) link

they should have gotten their info from chanos and we wouldnt have such alarm.

'compared to the carnitas and pastrami burrito at chano's, chipotle burritos only have 50% of fat, sodium, etc'

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:56 (nineteen years ago) link

Baja Fresh is incredibly fattening and caloric. I used to enjoy their burritos "enchilado style" until I looked up the calorie content/fat content on their website... the burritos themselves have about 1,000 calories.. and the "enchilado style" part (enchilada sauce, cheese, side of chips and cheese and all melted and gooey) ads AN ADDITIONAL 900 CALORIES. So the whole thing IS 1,900 CALORIES OMG WTF???? I never ate it again. Now I get the baja style tacos which have about 190 cals apiece and kind of taste like grasshopper mash.

Towelette Pettatucci (Homosexual II), Friday, 3 September 2004 19:06 (nineteen years ago) link

h do you really think that is such a weird assumption?

i go to chipotle out of necessity once or twice a week becuase working in a nightclub, i need something quick to eat when i take my ten minute break (we dont serve food). my options for something quick (the neighborhood has mostly upscale, sit-down places or other clubs) include fudruckers, subway, local chain burrito brothers and chipotle. is it that odd to assume that ordering a chicken burrito with rice, black beans, chicken, lettuce and tomato is somehow healthier than going to fudruckers to get a quarter pounder, fries and a milkshake? obviously mexican cuisine in general has plenty of high-cholesterol and high-fat foods, but what i order seems to be on the healthier side of the spectrum of what is available, and i am a little pissed that it isnt, especially since i have been so angry at myself for subsidising a large corporation (the food at burrito brothers makes me feel like shit). god i hate dc sometimes.

Towelette Pettatucci (Homosexual II), Friday, 3 September 2004 19:07 (nineteen years ago) link

I think it's a hugely weird assumption given what a lot of Mexican food, as imagined by Americans, is like.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 3 September 2004 19:08 (nineteen years ago) link

Even the "healthy" burrito at Baja Fresh - the grilled vegetarian - has 700 calories (which seems like quite a bit to me).

GOD DAMNIT YOU ALL ARE MAKING ME SO HUNGRY

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 3 September 2004 19:14 (nineteen years ago) link

no see i think it depends h because most of what i put in my burrito is (what i think or thought to be) relatively unprocessed. most food that is unhealthy is made that way instead of being born that way. i guess i am a bit of an idiot to make assumptions... i just figured all that was going into my burrito were the ingredients themselves (ie flour, water, chicken, black beans, rice, lettuce, tomatos). i know exactly what you are talking about inre mexican food in america, but i thought i might be circumvventing that by avoiding cheese, sour cream, refried beans, etc.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 3 September 2004 19:19 (nineteen years ago) link

all those ingredients sans cheese, sour cream, refried beans still have calories, is I guess what I mean.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 3 September 2004 19:21 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah, but probably better than a fried burger patty and fried potatoes and sugar-filled soda.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 3 September 2004 19:26 (nineteen years ago) link

xpost just more than i expected.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 3 September 2004 19:28 (nineteen years ago) link

I love Baja Fresh! The salsas are very good. I usually get the burrito ultimo with chicken and ask them to hold the cheese and sour cream and add guacamole. I'm amused that someone is surprised that making one of their burritos "enchilada style", which is basically covering it in cheese and an oily tomato sauce, will make it less than healthy. In general holding the cheese, sour cream and mayonaise will reduce the fat content of most fast food to manageable levels. Ground beef at any restaurant (fast or otherwise) is rarely lean and when combined with textured soy protein becomes a serious saturated fat bomb.

also, this line:
chipotle, i learned last night, is owned by MCDONALD'S. so yeah, no surprise about the lack of info.

is a little odd, seeing as McDonald's nutrition information (while not good news), has been available in detail and for a long time.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 3 September 2004 19:34 (nineteen years ago) link

my knowhow on diet is pretty rudimentary but i think the source of calories is as important as the actual number, right? so if green peppers are high cal i'm not gonna care too much

i eat chipotle a fair amt (i don't have a good excuse either) and i try to go vegetarian and skip the sour cream and cheese (still a sucker for guac tho, which is more lethal). i'm guessing the problem is in the other ingredients in everything, like whatever they do to give the rice its lovely viscosity, sweeteners in the salsas, who knows...

g--ff (gcannon), Friday, 3 September 2004 19:35 (nineteen years ago) link

Once again, Ned is OTM. x post.

is there lard in there?!

You're not gonna believe this shit...real Mexican food often has lard in it! I don't know what's in the Chipotle tortilla, but soy flour can ramp up the protein count a lot.

I believe McD's sold off Chipotle ownership, not sure. Chipotle is very good though, and makes some efforts to source pork and beef from small producers. It's still fast food, not health food.

Hunter (Hunter), Friday, 3 September 2004 20:05 (nineteen years ago) link

gabbneb thanks for the good links. i didnt know about those places but they close at 2:30. i have no problems with lunch, as my shifts start at 2:30, and i have the whole of the dc area to eat in before work... its just that i dont get out for another 12-14 hours, and i need something at around 9:30 to get me through the night, and it has to be carry out, and it has to be satiating and quick(if it werent for the constant physical demands of the job, i could get by with just a mixed green salad from bertuccis).

rereading this paragraph, i think fast food might be slightly inevitable, although last night i didnt eat dinner and instead saved myself until 4am for chicken kebab at the 24-hour pakistani place in crystal city. the problem with this approach is that i am eating hours after the constant stream of drinks that are inevitable at my job (especially on a slow night) (a place where leaving at 4am on a saturday night/sunday morning is considered leacing early).

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 3 September 2004 20:38 (nineteen years ago) link

aaron i don't mean to sound like yr mom but bag a lunch! a couple sandwiches in a knapsack saves yr arteries and $$ too. maybe you don't have the fridge space at work. but a yogurt cup and some baby carrots and you have a healthy nerdy meal, if not too filling.

g--ff (gcannon), Friday, 3 September 2004 20:43 (nineteen years ago) link

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 3 September 2004 20:51 (nineteen years ago) link

g-ff is right. there is no excuse. i think i have an irational hatred of pre-made deli sandwiches as ten years of my life from junior kindergarten through 8th grade consisted of turkey lettuce and tomato on bread lovingly thrown together by a busy dual-earner household.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 3 September 2004 21:08 (nineteen years ago) link

You're not gonna believe this shit...real Mexican food often has lard in it!

Not necessarily. Real FLOUR TORTILLAS have lard (or, like I said, vegetable shortening) in them, but the great majority of actual, authentic Mexican food is actually supposed to be healthier than what American food is supposed to be. Mexican cooking relies a lot on grilling and spices in order to make things taste really good, and a lot of the sauces are really not that bad nutritionally.

It's when you get to the Tex-Mex type things (and when real Mexican food is prepared incorrectly, e.g. frying fajitas in tons of oil instead of just grilling them -- and yes, fajitas ARE authentic) when you run into health-oriented problems.

p.s.: I would not trust a Mexican restaurant that touts itself as "authentic" that's located anywhere aside from California, Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Denver, or Chicago. Or possibly even Oklahoma or certain areas in Alabama or Georgia.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 3 September 2004 21:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Then you are a fool cause there are "authentic" Mexicans all over this country.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 3 September 2004 21:29 (nineteen years ago) link

Sure, fine, call me a fool. Whatev. Though I doubt we've REALLY spread ALL throughout the country. Maybe there's enough throughout to where one or two families live in an area, but not enough to make a living and vibrant community. (This is based on 2002 census data, BTW. I'm not unwilling to believe the data's changed since then.)

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 3 September 2004 21:40 (nineteen years ago) link

Dee is so totally OTM.

People seriously need to get over their lard fear.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 3 September 2004 22:30 (nineteen years ago) link

We had a party with Chipotle catering well after the outbreak, and they did great and it was great and everyone was happy. Around $200 to feed 25 folks, well packaged and easily transportable piles of assemble it yourself ingredients, chafing dishes, fires, the whole deal. Thinking of doing it again. Maybe we have a good location?

See now if they had a chain that sold modestly priced confit de canard in a fast-casual setting in every mid- to large-size American city I'd be all over that

That was OK, I guess. I got the steak. One piece of meat was unchewably gristly and I had to spit it out into a napkin. Something was unexpectedly spicy -- the guacamole? but not in an interesting way, more in a generically hot way. It fulfilled the goal of being fast to purchase, easy to carry and filling, but I'm not enthusiastic about going to Chipotle again.

Woman who assaulted Chipotle worker sentenced to fast food job for two months

(Judge) Gilligan told Hayne she could cut off 60 days in jail if she agreed to work at least 20 hours per week at a fast-food restaurant for two months.

Hayne accepted.

In court, Hayne apologised and tried to explain the rationale behind her screaming at the Chipotle worker, 26-year-old Emily Russell.

"If I showed you how my food looked and how my food looked a week later from that same restaurant, it's disgusting looking," Hayne said, according to WJW.

"I bet you won't be happy with the food you are going to get in the jail," Mr Gilligan quipped.
