Especially when they are doing their job in an efficient and polite manner!

Sorry John, but that's entirely your problem. You can't be a special snowflake all the time.

Jesse, Saturday, 3 March 2007 16:30 (seventeen years ago) link

Lots of times efficiency is synonymous with brusqueness, though. That's usually what bothers me.

Sorry John, but that's entirely your problem.

I totally realize this! I never said it wasn't irrational!

jaymc, Saturday, 3 March 2007 16:32 (seventeen years ago) link

Ok, this can be your special irrational thing, but keep it to yourself.

You know how you know you're on a date with an asshole? He's rude to the waiter. This never fails.

kenan, Saturday, 3 March 2007 16:34 (seventeen years ago) link

I wasn't aware you had been on so many dates with men.

Btw, the argument with the security guard would've ended a lot sooner if dude had simply said, "Hey I know it doesn't make sense, but this is what I've been told to enforce."

jaymc, Saturday, 3 March 2007 16:38 (seventeen years ago) link

Maybe they don't pay him enough to be nice to people he doesn't like.

I feel like I'm being put in my place, and I hate that.

That's just whiny. STFU. Your place is where you are, and if you're uncomfortable with it, do something about that. Don't take it out on the staff.

kenan, Saturday, 3 March 2007 16:42 (seventeen years ago) link

Why would he not like me?

jaymc, Saturday, 3 March 2007 16:44 (seventeen years ago) link

oh no.

kenan, Saturday, 3 March 2007 16:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Lots of times efficiency is synonymous with brusqueness, though. That's usually what bothers me.

But these people weren't brusque, and you still had a problem with it. It's kind of diva-ish, this not wanting to be put in your place, can we agree on that?

Why would he not like me?

HA HAHAHAHAH!! I CAN'T IMAGINE ANY POSSIBLE REASON!!

Jesse, Saturday, 3 March 2007 16:49 (seventeen years ago) link

But these people weren't brusque

What people? At the club last night? I think they were a little brusque, sure. Most people like that are.

It's kind of diva-ish, this not wanting to be put in your place, can we agree on that?

Maybe, or just a natural dislike of feeling humiliated.

jaymc, Saturday, 3 March 2007 16:53 (seventeen years ago) link

uh... you're talking to john, right? Does he EVER capitulate?

kenan, Saturday, 3 March 2007 16:53 (seventeen years ago) link

a natural dislike of feeling humiliated.

Oh PLEEEEZ. You are not put upon! Nobody else gives a runny shit if being given an order is not quite your style!

kenan, Saturday, 3 March 2007 16:56 (seventeen years ago) link

I wish I had been a fully-fledged ILXor when the "How can anyone not like ME?" conversation was in full swing so I could have contributed. It was classic.

But really, why do you think the DMV guard would not like you? Think about it! (Hint: you're another person in a day filled with douchebags trying to question him while he's doing his unsatisfying, annoying, and prossibly underpaying job. He's charged with keeping people from waiting inside, and has no reason to give a shit whether you find that rule sensible or not.)

Jesse, Saturday, 3 March 2007 16:57 (seventeen years ago) link

The whole of the world would still be here without you, ya know.

kenan, Saturday, 3 March 2007 16:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Wouldn't "diva-ish" imply that I want special treatment, as though I'm more important, when all I want is to be treated on an equal level?

jaymc, Saturday, 3 March 2007 16:59 (seventeen years ago) link

YOU ARE BEING TREATED ON AN EQUAL LEVEL. THAT'S THE WHOLE ARGUMENT.

kenan, Saturday, 3 March 2007 17:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Not to say that a security guard or cop who is abusing his authority doesn't merit putting-in-place of their own. But just telling a person to move along does not constitute an abuse of power.

Jesse, Saturday, 3 March 2007 17:02 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm not being treated on an equal level if I'm being barked at and dudes are flexing their power-muscles at me.

jaymc, Saturday, 3 March 2007 17:03 (seventeen years ago) link

You are like everyone else, you are cattle to be herded by underpaid people who are very nice, considering their job, about herding people like you, who obviously want some kind of love from everyone you encounter, but IT AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN.

John, service industry people hate you. This is no mystery.gif.

kenan, Saturday, 3 March 2007 17:03 (seventeen years ago) link

"Power-muscles" = metaphor

jaymc, Saturday, 3 March 2007 17:03 (seventeen years ago) link

xpost OK.

Doorman: "Oh, I think tonight I'll be extra nice to the guy who holds me in mild contempt and questions the whole ritual of tipping or letting your server serve you or even basic politeness. That's What I'm going to do tonight."

kenan, Saturday, 3 March 2007 17:06 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm not being treated on an equal level if I'm being barked at and dudes are flexing their power-muscles at me.

We did agree earlier that the security and door people were nice, remember. But the problem was that you like being told what to do. You sound very American.

John is an American. I think that sums it up. (Oh, and John likes pussy and cars.)

Jesse, Saturday, 3 March 2007 17:06 (seventeen years ago) link

Doorman: "Oh, I think tonight I'll be extra nice to the guy who holds me in mild contempt and questions the whole ritual of tipping or letting your server serve you or even basic politeness. That's What I'm going to do tonight."

I don't hold anyone in contempt unless they've done something to earn it. I tip well, and I'm always nice to servers. I don't understand how any of this applies to me.

jaymc, Saturday, 3 March 2007 17:09 (seventeen years ago) link

PEOPLE! Let's get 'hold of ourselves! If we Chicagoans can't hang together, we'll hang seperately.

Jesse, Saturday, 3 March 2007 17:09 (seventeen years ago) link

WHERE IS THE CHICAGO SCROTUM FOR US TO ALL HANG IN?

kenan, Saturday, 3 March 2007 17:12 (seventeen years ago) link

I want to clarify something. I didn't have a huge problem with the people at the club last night. The dude downstairs raised my ire for a few seconds, but I think I dealt with it well and he didn't give me any more problems. All of the herding outside didn't make me mad or impatient, just uncomfortable about being treated like a body. Not anyone's fault, really. The only reason we're having this conversation is that you guys said they were "polite," and I'm not sure that's the most apt characterization I'd use.

jaymc, Saturday, 3 March 2007 17:14 (seventeen years ago) link

I wasn't even there, and the only reason I'm here is because Jaymc's Thing now is to bitch/argue about how he doesn't have to respect or tip the service industry because WAHHHH they don'ttreat him special.

kenan, Saturday, 3 March 2007 17:18 (seventeen years ago) link

When on earth have I ever said that?

jaymc, Saturday, 3 March 2007 17:21 (seventeen years ago) link

You, sir, are even more easily humiliated and touchy than me, and that's quite a thing.

kenan, Saturday, 3 March 2007 17:21 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm just now realizing that the comment about servers had to do with the whole debate about whether it's okay to go to the bar instead of waiting for your server. I now recognize my error, and I'm not likely to do it again. Please understand, though, that going to the bar was never a "fuck you" to the server, because it simply never occurred to me how that choice could affect her.

I'm sorry I frustrate all of you so often.

jaymc, Saturday, 3 March 2007 18:05 (seventeen years ago) link

You're fine, John. We all like you a whole lot.

kenan, Saturday, 3 March 2007 18:39 (seventeen years ago) link

i just bought a new (refurb, whatever) macbook omg omg wooooooo.

hi john.

JuliaA, Saturday, 3 March 2007 18:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Hi. :)

jaymc, Saturday, 3 March 2007 18:47 (seventeen years ago) link

Julia just bought a new computer! W00T!

And... I talked her into buying a Mac, so I'm kinda proud of that. I'm sorry, I'm not a Mac zealot, I swear. It's just that she was always about "Oh shit my drivers aren't compatible what do I do?" and "OhNo crashycrashy Stupid Machine!" and "Guess some friends have to come over and manage my cranky-ass machine because I cannot." No. Fuck that. Julia does not deserve a machine that is just a pile of constant trouble. I like her TOO MUCH to let her buy another PC laptop, which will just be the same thing all over again.

Mwah, Julia. Enjoy the snazziness.

kenan, Saturday, 3 March 2007 18:47 (seventeen years ago) link

i'm planning on it! and when i'm waxing poetic about how wonderful my new laptop is, you can gloat. :)

JuliaA, Saturday, 3 March 2007 18:52 (seventeen years ago) link

Deal.

kenan, Saturday, 3 March 2007 18:53 (seventeen years ago) link

Yall are funny.

Jeff, Saturday, 3 March 2007 19:41 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm still feeling the affects from drinking on Friday night. I swear I've almost passed out like 3 times today.

Jeff, Saturday, 3 March 2007 19:42 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm still feeling the effects from drinking on Friday night, too. But, never fear: PIZZA IS ON THE WAY.

(thx again for inviting us out, EZ... it was fun)

dan m, Saturday, 3 March 2007 19:45 (seventeen years ago) link

You guys talk about Friday night like it wasn't last night. Denial?

kenan, Saturday, 3 March 2007 19:50 (seventeen years ago) link

I meant Thursday. See how fucked my brain is?

Jeff, Saturday, 3 March 2007 19:53 (seventeen years ago) link

The only thing I did last night was sleep on the couch from about 8 to 10, then go to bed.

Jeff, Saturday, 3 March 2007 19:54 (seventeen years ago) link

aws. dude, i been there.

kenan, Saturday, 3 March 2007 19:56 (seventeen years ago) link

You know, it's weird. When you get those hangovers, you ask yourself, why the fuck did I do this again. The next two days are going to be a complete fucking waste. I should really consider slowing down.

Then that sweet nectar touches you lips the next weekend. Repeat process.

Jeff, Saturday, 3 March 2007 20:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Or the next night. Cycles may vary.

Jeff, Saturday, 3 March 2007 20:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Yup.

I just posted a cute photo of Kr's eye on WDYLL.

jaymc, Saturday, 3 March 2007 20:02 (seventeen years ago) link

Hey Kenan -- do you want to send me the rest of that C. Veloso album? I have tracks 1, 3, 4, 8, 9, and 11.

jaymc, Saturday, 3 March 2007 20:04 (seventeen years ago) link

My fantasy baseball draft is in 20 minutes. I always get nervous as hell for these things.
