Their litanies. I was thinking about one guy in particular.

ON THE OTHER HAND-- I've had a chance to think about my reaction to these twats, and they are they price you pay for living in a place that is more interesting than say, Greensboro. These are the kind of urban annoyances I was expecting when I wanted to move to a big city.

Thus have I come to peace with the rappers and my annoyance: we're all a part of the big Circle of City Life.

And note to self: Charge your iPod, dammit.

Jesse, Monday, 5 March 2007 04:41 (seventeen years ago) link

I'd love to see an impromptu rap battle on the el platform.

Jeff, Monday, 5 March 2007 04:52 (seventeen years ago) link

I probably would have enjoyed the impromptu subway rap battle.

I went and saw Breach tonight, it was exactly the movie I thought it would be. It enjoyed it but sometimes I wish I could avoid all trailers and reviews.

Jordan, Monday, 5 March 2007 04:52 (seventeen years ago) link

I tried out my singing-along-to-an-ipod idea with some folks today - they were sketpical beforehand and cracking up during. It works to see someone caught up in the energy of something like "Come On Eileen" and trying to sing along with it but without hearing the accompanying music.

After seeing Zodiac today, I'm going to have "Hurdy Gurdy Man" stuck in my head for a while. That song is one hell of a lumbering beast.

Eazy, Monday, 5 March 2007 05:31 (seventeen years ago) link

You can do this on Monday night:

Happy Casimir Pulaski day.

I'd rather see a rap battle than Chikago Disko.

Jeff, Monday, 5 March 2007 12:31 (seventeen years ago) link

As much as I understand how annoying subway platform shenanigans can be when you're not in the mood for them, I think I'd like to see a rap battle, too.

How was Zodiac?

Jenny, Monday, 5 March 2007 14:01 (seventeen years ago) link

I think the main thing that annoyed me was that they had people encouraging them, and the woman saying that rap was a lucrative form of poetry.

One guy said:

Your head's nappy
I'm gonna give you a comb
Then send you home
You shoulda combed your fuzz, Cuz.

Jesse, Monday, 5 March 2007 14:14 (seventeen years ago) link

Now that's lucrative poetry.

Jenny, Monday, 5 March 2007 14:15 (seventeen years ago) link

And like I said, when I was in GSO, this was the sort of urban experience that I would have craved so that I could stow it away for later.

Jesse, Monday, 5 March 2007 14:16 (seventeen years ago) link

The night before, Courtney and I were on the train and there was a girl of about 20-24 who was going on and on about her love of Rod Stewart. I think she had just come from a concert (she and her boyfriend both had RS T-shirts on). She was talking to a goth girl about RS, and when the goth girl got off the train, she said, "I don't think she really loved Rod Stewart. Not like we do. No one loves Rod Stewart like we do."

This girl complimented Courtney's purse, then told us, "My Rod Stewart T-Shirt is probably going to get me sooo many free drinks."

Good morning.

I had a great time at S0UNDbar. I could have stayed and danced for a lot longer, but Nick was tuckered out. Saturday I had the biggest hangover ever. I slept until about noon, then never really got the day going. I read (finished The Last Time They Met & started Prep), watched Marie Antoinette (which I really enjoyed), tidied house, and took a long hot bath by candlelight. I only left the apartment once - to walk two blocks to the video store and back.

KitCat, Monday, 5 March 2007 15:22 (seventeen years ago) link

Why would I Rod Stewart know how to get free drinks?

Did anyone take Soundbar pics?

This time of year, that's a full, satisfying Saturday for me.

my weekend in a nutshell:

friday - went to milwaukee in the snow, saw a fun set from a good band and had an amazing night all the way around. at least until the miller brewing company partnered with gravity to have me meet an icy sidewalk. i slept the sleep of angels friday night.

saturday/sunday- saw busy signals at sub-t, n/a was there as well. i thought they played really well then i paid progressively less and less attention to the bands which was inversely proportional the amount of alcohol i imbibed. i did rally to pay attention to some of the river city tanlines set and i should have paid more attention because they really are fucking good. then i went to an afterparty then i went to breakfast. then i went home and listened to records. then i went to brunch (because of my egg addiction) and had a screwdriver. this continued on for what turned out to be 5 hours in a bar on a sunday afternoon. then i went back to my house so billlisamike could grab their gear that they'd stowed there on friday for their show that night. then i went to the bottle to see that show. c0c0c0ma were really really good, i can't wait for their full length because the songs that are on there are fucking fantastic. then the reigning sound was played and i could only stay for half their set because i started to crash, hard, and was unsure if i'd make it home if i stayed around. reigning sound are touring with keyboards again so there were thick, gluely slabs of hammond organ in all the right places. then i slept for four hours and came to work. and one thing about spending 5 hours drinking skrewdrivers in a bar is that occasionally things will sound like a good idea that really aren't. like knuckle tattoos with sharpies. no matter how much i scrubbed and scrubbed it didn't change the fact that i just came out of a staff meeting with "blow me" across my knuckles. faded, but it's there.

Ha ha. I thought the sub-t show was pretty fun but not amazing. Bands like G1to G1to Hustler get on my nerves. Way to play up to the stereotypes, ladies. R1ver C1ty Tanlines were my faves, though I had to leave about five songs into their set because I was too tired. Busy S1gnals were fun but honestly a little monotonous after a while. M0T0 was reasonably entertaining.

n/a, Monday, 5 March 2007 15:40 (seventeen years ago) link

The sound was not great either, the vocals were way too quiet for all the bands.

n/a, Monday, 5 March 2007 15:40 (seventeen years ago) link

I was surprisingly productive on Saturday, making it to the downtown library, the art supply store to buy calligraphy pens, the jewelry store to pick up Sarah's wedding ring, and CVS, as well as working with Sarah to address and assemble the wedding invites before making it out to the show. Yesterday was also ridiculously productive, with trips to the gym, Staples and the grocery store all before noon, in addition to doing my Sunday work work and having band practice. I felt really virtuous yesterday afternoon. Then I sat around and read my semi-trashy book most of the evening.

yeah, we were talking about this and came to pretty much the same conclusion. my friend todd put forth that they were actually from the detroit suburbs and it was all an act. some inside-joke to see how gullible whitey can be.

also, i can't believe i'm seeing the "monotonous" applied to any band other than moto from that bill.

HELLO I WILL BE SEEING THE BIZ SIGS IN LESS THAN FOUR WEEKS

Laurel, Monday, 5 March 2007 15:49 (seventeen years ago) link

I think the MOTO gang singing helped them rise above the "vocals way too quiet" problem, whereas Busy Signals were buried by the shitty sound a little. The sound probably didn't interfere with your enjoyment as much since I'm guessing you already know the songs.

n/a, Monday, 5 March 2007 15:49 (seventeen years ago) link

The worst thing about GGH was the five old, sleazy-looking guys in the front row taking 8,000 flash pictures with expensive digital cameras.

you crazy kids with your rock and roll music.

I feel like that one guitarist from BS (the one on the left) was at Hidden Cove one of the times a bunch of us were there.

n/a, Monday, 5 March 2007 15:51 (seventeen years ago) link

hey me too.

one thing from friday: milwaukee has their own versions of friends and acquaintences. there was milwaukee eric from the busy signals, there was milwaukee tom dash (who looked JUST F'ING LIKE HIM), and milwaukee paully rocco. but they were slightly off, a little bit shabbier, all of the dirt but none of the verve.

What was their deal?

The pizza place gig on Friday was fine, we played pretty well but it was very much an opening slot. They didn't even turn down the lights when we played. Then I was rude and didn't stay to see any of the other bands, I split to go drink with a couple of friends and eat some ill-advised tacos before going to bed.

Saturday I played in Portage, WI for a bunch of kids and old people. I played drum kit w/Digd0wn, so that was kinda new. Then I went out with a couple of friends and ate an ill-advised (but incredible) bacon bleu cheeseburger before going to bed.

All-girl Japanese rock group, matching costumes with leopard-print shirts, big fake smiles on their faces as they bopped around. Is it wrong of me to be annoyed by bands like this?

the one of the left is kevin and he lives up north so he might have been there. he's also in the krunch13s. he's really fun and funny and probably younger than any of the chilxors.

Oh, I did watch a little bit of Scream1n Cyn & the P0n P0ns on Friday, who've been getting a lot of buzz around here. They didn't sound very good to me, but they did have a lot of woodblocks and a half-naked fat dude in leather pants playing a keytar. People go nuts for that shit.

Didn't stay for the Rept0ids.

Jordan, Monday, 5 March 2007 16:06 (seventeen years ago) link

Wait, Kevin, did GGH finish up the night last time you were at Trash Bar?? That descrip sounds like them, but I have to admit I dug it.

You know what's awesome? Pumpkin seeds.

But you know I wish? I wish there was a toaster oven here, so I could put soy sauce and salt on them and toast them.

I totally DID NOT get free pizza!

Except I kinda did, because I stopped by Ev4n's place before the gig and he and his wife had just ordered a pizza from the same place. And then I got to the gig and the guitarist's wife had paid for a sandwich and fries but only ate half the sandwich, giving me the rest. SCORE.
