"Also, in case you didn't know, because they almost never talk about it, she had a miscarriage.
...
It's highly likely that Fuckley simply did not know how to draw a human child, even with a CADface, and gave up on it."

And I forgot how much I heart Cyanide and Happiness:

FWIW, Johnny is a real deal comic book dude published by Fantagraphics, not some dude photoshopping video game names into word bubbles.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 18 November 2008 01:07 (fifteen years ago) link

true, but that "new character parade" series is just stuck up on his site every week, so it is technically a web comic.

Guys, I've been making my own strips lately, but every time I read this thread, it makes me go back and reconsider.

өөө (Pleasant Plains), Thursday, 27 November 2008 18:27 (fifteen years ago) link

It's better to take a chance on making a bad strip and risk a critical pounding than not to do anything at all. I mean, at the end of the day, you can at least say you did this thing even if it's not brilliant, whereas critics don't have anything to point to. Also, seeing tons of bad strips will help you not to fall into common traps, so if yr strip sucks, at least it will suck in the knowledge of suckitude.

sheepie (libcrypt), Thursday, 27 November 2008 18:37 (fifteen years ago) link

I like the one that tells you how to find the centre of a circle, I didn't know that! The explanation seems pretty clear tbh?

Gravel Puzzleworth, Thursday, 27 November 2008 18:41 (fifteen years ago) link

I think the main trap that so many of these online guys, as well as Lynn Johnston of For Better or For Worse, fall into is thinking that something haha in real life is going to be haha on the drawing board once they get all the borders connected.

In Dom's link above, there's one of the guy's baby going "dada" at some old man. Yeah, that happens and it's funny at the time, but it doesn't translate in any fashion to being funny as a comic strip.

I mean, unless that guy's drawing strips just for his family members and they all know him and his kid.

there is no way this is OTM

uәʇɹɐƃu!әʍ ˙ƃ ʎәu!Ⴁʍ (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 27 November 2008 19:08 (fifteen years ago) link

Like its ALWAYS cool to have a shitty comic strip or a shitty band for fun. Dut don't start pushing them on friends and family and the internet like they are good and deserve attention.

uәʇɹɐƃu!әʍ ˙ƃ ʎәu!Ⴁʍ (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 27 November 2008 19:10 (fifteen years ago) link

Also, livejournal comic tubby guy has some pretty epic threads on BCO dedicated to his shitty comic.

uәʇɹɐƃu!әʍ ˙ƃ ʎәu!Ⴁʍ (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 27 November 2008 19:12 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh, critical beatdowns aren't stopping me from drawing anything. I guess that I'm saying it's just as important to spend time looking at really bad comics as it is learning from really good cartoonists.

It's like making fun of some shitty cover band and then spending the next day just playing the bass riff to "Godzilla" over and over.

өөө (Pleasant Plains), Thursday, 27 November 2008 19:24 (fifteen years ago) link

I think the main rules from these cartoons are:

1) Try to have actual proper jokes
2) If you're going to bother with characterisation, bother with characterisation. Don't just give one of your guys cancer FOR DEPTH
3) Don't write yourself
4) Don't write a sockpuppet black/female/gay character to give some "insight" to your views
5) Don't mention sci-fi. At all.

Peter "One Dart" Manley (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Thursday, 27 November 2008 19:31 (fifteen years ago) link

Or do all those things and prepare for message board snark.

Neil S, Thursday, 27 November 2008 19:33 (fifteen years ago) link

I once wrote a letter to Peter Bagge saying I live in Minneapolis though I know you don't like it, and he wrote back politely saying, uh, it was my character who didn't like Minneapolis.

өөө (Pleasant Plains), Thursday, 27 November 2008 19:35 (fifteen years ago) link

It's OK not to have jokes, but you've got to have something else to become the content.

sheepie (libcrypt), Thursday, 27 November 2008 20:19 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah I was about to say, is it really neccesary for comics to be funny all the time? What are we, twelve?

Trayce, Thursday, 27 November 2008 23:15 (fifteen years ago) link

Comics, no. Three panel web cartoons that have no artist values on the drawing at all so they live and die by the zingy text, yes.

Peter "One Dart" Manley (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Thursday, 27 November 2008 23:22 (fifteen years ago) link

Fair point.

Trayce, Thursday, 27 November 2008 23:25 (fifteen years ago) link

also, if you can't draw and just do photoshop and clip art shit fuck you

uәʇɹɐƃu!әʍ ˙ƃ ʎәu!Ⴁʍ (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 28 November 2008 03:48 (fifteen years ago) link

any artist that photoshops from old strips and doesn't draw each panel individually can simply get fucked.

uәʇɹɐƃu!әʍ ˙ƃ ʎәu!Ⴁʍ (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 28 November 2008 03:49 (fifteen years ago) link

Even Aaron MacGruder wouldn't do that with his "Grampa watches TV" strips.
