I think that if you have a haircut that works for you, you should just stick with it. I will probably keep this hairstyle forever since it's the only one I've ever had taht looks better the longer I go between haircuts.

Jenny, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 22:47 (seventeen years ago) link

of all the millions and millions of things i think about, from the life-altering to the trivial, what my hair looks like is rarely, if ever, one of them.

OBV! :D

Also: there's a kind of vegan that doesn't wear WOOL??

yup.

Veganism, as defined by the Vegan Society, is "a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude — as far as is possible and practical — all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose."

(that's from wiki)

i was kind of stunned to learn that not only do vegans stay away from dairy and eggs, they don't eat honey (OH THINK OF THE BEES OMG), and don't wear any sort of leather or wool or anything that has ever come from an animal. there was a new york times article on how veganism is becoming trendy, talking about expensive "vegan purses" and "vegan shoes". it went on and on about blahblah eco-consciousness when VEGAN SHOES ARE ACTUALLY WORSE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT WTF. polyurethane and PVC and the like--not so earth-friendly. i suppose if you wear nothing but cotton sneakers, that's one thing, but there's all this fake leather bullshit that will never biodegrade and is a bitch to the environment to produce...and that's what's the supposedly ethical choice?

i'm all for consideration of animal rights, but people should use their brains when they're trying to make social statements through consumer choices. srsly.

JuliaA, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 00:11 (seventeen years ago) link

i have a couple of vegan cookbooks because my roommate's close friend (an avid cook and recommender of cookbooks) is a vegan. (there was bacon in the fridge when she last visited, which she kept commenting on. i was amused.)

there's some decent stuff in the cookbooks, when they're not using weirdass mystery ingredients and promoting fake meats. some really good food is naturally vegan. hummus, for example. i love me some hummus.

but i got to reading the beginning of one of the cookbooks one day, looking for some sort of conversion or something--and instead of helpful info, there was all this proselytizing about IDEALS. it went on and on about how it was sometimes difficult to stick to veganism, but think of the social importance of how you're eating and living and blahblah.

but i have a serious problem with people buying vegan shoes and refusing to wear wool and thinking they're making a difference in the world.

and honey! i love honey! i do not worry about the suffering of the bees! though eschewing honey doesn't do any harm, i suppose. so it's mainly the shoes.

JuliaA, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 00:21 (seventeen years ago) link

I still think it's mainly a fashion statement: MORE VEGAN THAN U, just like any number of "countercultural" ethea. I've known several vegans in my life, and all of them were in it because of either peer pressure (i.e. being cool) or serious body issues (quote: "I'd rather have cancer than be fat" -- yeah, that has nothing to do with veganism).

I think a lot of the ideas are sound but like everything good, once people make it a lifestyle a lot of that becomes secondary.

Also, I like to eat flesh. Gotta use these pointy teeth for something.

dan m, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 00:45 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm trying really hard to find the fake "how to be emo" page some friends of mine made a few years ago. Choice quote: "Don't be vegan because you care about animals. Be vegan to be cool."

dan m, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 00:50 (seventeen years ago) link

i can understand the serious body issues thing: people with such issues commonly like to be in strict control over things, and having a diet that requires lots of adaptations and restrictions lends a rigidity to what/how you can eat.

veganism in itself doesn't necessarily promote losing weight/being thin, though. the vegan i know is at least 5 or 6 sizes bigger than my bacon-eating self.

JuliaA, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 01:02 (seventeen years ago) link

Not wearing wool or leather or consuming honey are pretty much basic tenets of veganism, so I don't know why that's much of a surprise. Maybe I've just known a lot of people with copies of Diet for a New America on their bookshelf or something.

That said, while I think there are a lot of advantages to a strict vegan lifestyle, and admire those who are able to pull it off with grace and happiness, I'm more likely to espouse a philosophy of "do what you can." Ultimately, I'd like to wear shoes that aren't made from animal products, but it's so hard for me to find non-vegan shoes that fit me that it doesn't seem worth the effort. And while I have absolutely no desire to eat meat and am perfectly content without it, giving up cheese would definitely make me sad. So I do what I can.

Some people probably think that I'm a bad vegetarian (esp. now that I eat seafood every once in a while), but I have a feeling that the emphasis on purity that you hear from some animal-rights activists has the potential to send someone in the opposite direction, if they find themselves unable to adhere to the lifestyle 100%. Again, if you can make it work for you, then that's awesome, but for a lot of people, I think it's spiritually healthier to embrace moderation.

jaymc, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 02:24 (seventeen years ago) link

AMEN.

kenan, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 03:50 (seventeen years ago) link

Kenan, I did get the YSI, but I can't open .rar files. :(

Don't worry about it.

jaymc, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 03:50 (seventeen years ago) link

damnit, you can open rar files if you try. they're not secret or anything.

but if you like, i'll zip it. :)

kenan, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 03:55 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh cool, that worked!

I downloaded some similar program a while ago and couldn't figure it out, so I thought .rars were a lost cause for me.

jaymc, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 03:58 (seventeen years ago) link

nope

kenan, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 03:59 (seventeen years ago) link

i'm seeing a doctor who might want me to give up cheese at some point because of something with digestion and wtf and i don't know. the concept scares me, but i'd do it temporarily if it would really impact my health. i think. i kind of doubt that it would make that big of a difference, though. i dunno.

i had the most beautiful sharp white cheddar in my fridge, really potent stuff, which is now all gone and eaten. how can i give up flavor like that? cheese is such an incredible foodstuff.

JuliaA, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 03:59 (seventeen years ago) link

i really do miss xposts.

JuliaA, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 04:00 (seventeen years ago) link

It's a good thing I haven't emptied out the trash on my desktop, too, because I have albums by Of Montreal, The Shins, and Peter Bjorn + John in .rar format that I downloaded just to see if they'd work. They didn't, but they will now.

jaymc, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 04:01 (seventeen years ago) link

YAY!

kenan, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 04:03 (seventeen years ago) link

julia, i got you cheese instead of chocolate for valentines day, because you can't eat chocolate, and whatevs, because cheese is better anyway. But if you stop eating cheese... OH NOES. What's next, you won't eat bacon??? This is insanity.

kenan, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 04:09 (seventeen years ago) link

that really was some serious cheddar, wasn't it?

treasure island, ppl.

kenan, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 04:12 (seventeen years ago) link

it was AWESOME.

i don't know about stopping with eating cheese altogether. i don't know if it's humanly possible for me.

JuliaA, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 04:15 (seventeen years ago) link

(and cheese for valentine's day was totally better than chocolate)

JuliaA, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 04:17 (seventeen years ago) link

I have it on good authority that Julia still eats bacon. She had one of my leftover burgers for dinner, which is a big medium-rare slab of ground beef with a thick, nasty piece of bacon wrapped around it and fried all together in its own beautiful animalistic greasiness. I tried to fancy it up with arugala when I put it together, but I needn't have bothered. It would have been awesome with just a little mustard.

Or with nothing. That would also work.

kenan, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 04:48 (seventeen years ago) link

This thread is pretty great.

kenan, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 05:11 (seventeen years ago) link

For our date.

Jesse, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 05:12 (seventeen years ago) link

Tonight is the kind of night where I wish I smoked weed. If a joint wouldn't make me want to run through the window, I would love to sit around and smoke one.

Jesse, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 05:14 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm more likely to espouse a philosophy of "do what you can."

OTM. Plus, meat-eaters who feel the need to justify themselves are just as annoying as self-righteous vegans.

Who's going with me to see Mastodon at the Riviera on May 12?

n/a, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 13:32 (seventeen years ago) link

There are few feelings more frustrating than getting up and leaving for work an our early to get in and get some work cranked out before the day hits, only to be stuck in molasses-ass traffic and ending up twenty minutes late.

I totally want to see Mastodon, I love them.
