I'm going to post this again, and offer no commentary.

It's cheap, I know, but even if you disagree with me, you can't disagree with HER.

DSMOS has arrived (kenan), Monday, 11 April 2011 17:05 (thirteen years ago) link

Ok, I can't help but offer some commentary.

Not only is most indoor lighting in a red-orange-yellow kind of range by its very nature, but most natural lighting looks blue by comparison. The combination of these two complimentary colors is not an accident, but neither is it some new hip trend that we can all pile on top of and focus hate on. It's warm light and cool light.

This ties in to how I can't stand people saying, "I would use fluorescent bulbs, but I hate that cold, blue light." Which is... more like daylight? Is that the problem? So what you're actually demanding is specifically UNnatural light, and trying to pass the argument off as if what you're arguing for is natural light that fluorescent bulbs exist in violation of.

DSMOS has arrived (kenan), Monday, 11 April 2011 17:36 (thirteen years ago) link

Also, unless you're on hallucinogens or you're taking pictures with your camera set to the wrong white balance, your eyes adjust for the dominant light in the room in about 15 seconds. Bitching about "cold" light is like bitching about how much better one soda is than another. Yeah, there's a difference, but who cares? Not even you, after about 15 minutes.

I have more examples. These are not color-corrected in any way. They are simply teal and orange.

And my personal favorite:

DSMOS has arrived (kenan), Monday, 11 April 2011 22:34 (thirteen years ago) link

I understand and will completely concede the point that digital post-processing has recently leaned, in certain movies, and perhaps even as a certain trend, toward a blue/orange, high-contrast color palette. But it's not a color combination that occurs nowhere in nature, nor is it new, nor is it extreme, nor is it all that awfully prevalent. I'm seeing a lot more straight-up cold-ass blue in movies lately, with any red washed almost totally out of them, even when it's not part of the visual language of the film. It's just David Fincher fans who grew up to direct movies, and didn't understand that Fight Club was about fascism, and fell asleep in class during Cries and Whispers.

I read this as "tea and oranges" and thought it was going to be a Leonard Cohen thing. I hate the overdone warm/cool thing though. The new Doctor Who way overdid it. As did a lot of the early Harry Potter movie posters.

in my mind it is one of the defining clichés of the current decade in the way that lemon poppyseed muffins, and brushed-steel/glass construction sci-fi models were clichés in the last one. i'm glad we're over the whole chipotle thing, too.

A Bop Gun for Dinosaur (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 30 April 2011 00:11 (thirteen years ago) link

Had a weird dream last night where i was on the set of a film being directed by James Cameron, i got invited into his trailer and i said "there's a thread on the internet about teal & orange, what do you think about all films looking like this?" He had some massive rant about how much work goes into the colouring of a film, got really angry at everyone. Then i woke up.

I did have cheese on toast before i went to sleep, maybe that had something to do with it?

not_goodwin, Saturday, 30 April 2011 09:37 (thirteen years ago) link

was it teal toast?

Errr stan - there is neither teal nor orange in that Carpenter working on the Hoover Dam, June 1942 as far as I can tell unless the colors are way off base on this monitor.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Tuesday, 3 May 2011 19:45 (thirteen years ago) link

No, you're right, those colors weren't invented yet. These are their predecessors.
(I though the contrast was vv similar, even though not really teal or orange.)

It's like Hollywood lost their colouring set and only had these two colours left out on the floor.

"You'll just have to use them 'til they run out and we'll get you another set" said someone in charge.

watched stuart gordon's dagon for like the 30th time last night, probably because it is my favorite movie by anyone ever (except for poor fernando rabal face-skinning, can't watch that). otherworldly T&O levels, contrasts udreamt by human film. <3
