I have the new Maximo Park album; it starts out strong but loses energy after the first few songs. And I thought they were French, not British?

n/a, Thursday, 8 March 2007 14:07 (seventeen years ago) link

They sound British though. Very Futureheads-y.

n/a, Thursday, 8 March 2007 14:07 (seventeen years ago) link

Maxïmo Park are an English indie rock band, signed to Warp Records, who formed in 2003. Drawing comparisons to Pulp and Franz Ferdinand, Maxïmo Park were, along with cohorts The Futureheads, North-East England's response to the post-punk revival of the 2000s.

Kitten is at the vet awaiting fixing. I forgot to not feed her last night, oops.

Jordan, Thursday, 8 March 2007 14:12 (seventeen years ago) link

Did you tell the vet that?

Jenny, Thursday, 8 March 2007 14:17 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, they said it's okay, they'll just do her later in the morning.

Jordan, Thursday, 8 March 2007 14:18 (seventeen years ago) link

Nick, you must have been confused by the diaresis over the "i."

jaymc, Thursday, 8 March 2007 14:18 (seventeen years ago) link

Oops, vet just called, it's a no go b/c she didn't fast long enough. I am dumb.

Jordan, Thursday, 8 March 2007 14:24 (seventeen years ago) link

Huh, I could have sworn that I read they were French somewheres. I wish I had the north English accent that the Futureheads and Field Music have.

n/a, Thursday, 8 March 2007 14:28 (seventeen years ago) link

Drat, Jordan! It's okay, though. That's an easy mistake to make, plus it's better that they don't do it then risk something bad happening. She might get diaresis or something.

Jenny, Thursday, 8 March 2007 14:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Diaresis of a Madman was probably my favorite ozzy album.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 8 March 2007 14:38 (seventeen years ago) link

Really? My favorite peanut butter-based candy item is Diaresis' Pieces.

n/a, Thursday, 8 March 2007 14:41 (seventeen years ago) link

Severe diaresis can lead to anal fissures.

kenan, Thursday, 8 March 2007 14:46 (seventeen years ago) link

I really didn't have to go there, did I?

kenan, Thursday, 8 March 2007 14:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Ok, this is bad. I'm walking to work today, for what's going to be a really busy day, and all I'm thinking is, "I think I'll revive that thread about how bald guys are sexy."

kenan, Thursday, 8 March 2007 14:53 (seventeen years ago) link

Don't do that, I'm going to be busy today and can't obsess over a crush thread. Maybe tomorrow?

Laurel, Thursday, 8 March 2007 15:02 (seventeen years ago) link

So if the Olympics DID come to Chicago, someone would probably be forced to pony up some $$$ to fix up the CTA, right?

n/a, Thursday, 8 March 2007 15:02 (seventeen years ago) link

Yes.

I want the Olympics to come here. It will be like another World's Fair.

KitCat, Thursday, 8 March 2007 15:10 (seventeen years ago) link

really i just wanted to post a bunch of pictures of Brian Eno. No crushing required.

kenan, Thursday, 8 March 2007 15:14 (seventeen years ago) link

Except that I have a crush on Brian Eno. It's not sexual, really. It's a different thing. An Eno crush.

kenan, Thursday, 8 March 2007 15:16 (seventeen years ago) link

i really wish i had a copy of marquee moon with me because that record helps me do stuff. for a kind of swirly, laid back record it's a real motivator for me. anyway, it's sunny out, it's going to be above freezing today and i feel like a million bucks.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 8 March 2007 15:17 (seventeen years ago) link

I've never heard MM. Someone needs to burn it for me because I'm clearly never going to buy it.

Jordan, Thursday, 8 March 2007 15:19 (seventeen years ago) link

That is a fantastic record. Yes. Title track is almost too short.

kenan, Thursday, 8 March 2007 15:19 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm imagining what it's like to get off at Addison during a Cubs home game crossed with riding the train full of sweaty, muscle men in tank tops a la the Gay Games and multiplying that by a giant, Olympic-sized stadium and getting a little terrified.

Anyway, I'm skeptical. I don't like how we basically have to want the Olympics to get the CTA repairs that we need. I am also skeptical that the people who live in Washington Park now aren't going to get much of a voice in the process and are going to get screwed.

Jenny, Thursday, 8 March 2007 15:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Jordan, I will YSI Marquee Moon to you if you send me the old Field Music album you have.

n/a, Thursday, 8 March 2007 15:20 (seventeen years ago) link

I am also skeptical that the people who live in Washington Park now aren't going to get much of a voice in the process and are going to get screwed.

That is my one big concern. An Olympic stadium in your neighborhood is something beyond mere gentrification.

kenan, Thursday, 8 March 2007 15:23 (seventeen years ago) link

Done.

(I just have to dig the cd out of my car)

Jordan, Thursday, 8 March 2007 15:23 (seventeen years ago) link

all i know is that walsh construction will have all of the city's money if chicago gets the games. right now they only have most of it.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 8 March 2007 15:24 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh, well I won't be sending you Marquee Moon until I get home this afternoon, track down the cd, and put it on my computer, so no rush.

n/a, Thursday, 8 March 2007 15:26 (seventeen years ago) link

I haven't ever zipped/rar'ed up a whole album, it'll be educational.

Jordan, Thursday, 8 March 2007 15:28 (seventeen years ago) link

Right click, create archive... at least that's all I ever do.

dan m, Thursday, 8 March 2007 15:38 (seventeen years ago) link

Best to rip it to mp3 first.

kenan, Thursday, 8 March 2007 15:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Okay, cool.

Jordan, Thursday, 8 March 2007 15:46 (seventeen years ago) link

One of the best Hoot Night performances I ever saw was for the "Tom, Dick, and Harry" theme, and some band I don't even recall did the title track from Marquee Moon (the Tom in question being T. Verlaine), all 10+ minutes of it, with every solo completely faithful to the original. It was awesome.

jaymc, Thursday, 8 March 2007 16:00 (seventeen years ago) link

okay and by the way
i want to say that
i think you're great and
i know what people say
you're a heartbreaker
it's just your way

chicago kevin, Thursday, 8 March 2007 16:00 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm in the high point of my night, I feel so impressive, life,
All this time with the Marquee Moon, but just waitin'.

kenan, Thursday, 8 March 2007 16:03 (seventeen years ago) link

i saw television at the metro about years ago (so long ago that i think hstencil and towga watched from the balcony while i was on the floor) and there was a dude in front of me who had to be 50 who was TOTALLY overemotive during marquee moon and venus de milo. with flailing air guitar and everything. in the middle of a packed metro floor.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 8 March 2007 16:06 (seventeen years ago) link

I've bragged about this before, but I have the Elektra promo copy of that record from my college radio station. When I was a freshman, the Programming Director got rid of a lot of vinyl that they replaced with CDs. The record is beat to shit and the sleeve is held together with duct tape. I have mp3s too and they sound better.

At the same vinyl giveaway I also got The Joshua Tree and Bossanova. These are also beat up, though not quite as badly.

dan m, Thursday, 8 March 2007 16:08 (seventeen years ago) link

i don't think i own it anymore. i know i bought the vinyl at reckless after i broke my cd but i think that wound up in california during the division of assets.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 8 March 2007 16:15 (seventeen years ago) link

wait, i do own it because i wound up with her copy of the cd.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 8 March 2007 16:16 (seventeen years ago) link

It's one of the few albums we own on both CD and LP. The only other one I can think of off the top of my head is "Do the Math" by the Peechees.

n/a, Thursday, 8 March 2007 16:16 (seventeen years ago) link

Deep deep deep deep doodoodoo
Deep deep deep deep doodoodoo
Deep deep deep-a-deep-deep, deep-a-deep-deep, deep-a-deep-deep doo
Deep deep deep deep doodoodoo
Deep deep deep deep doodoodoo
Deep deep deep-a-deep-deep, deep-a-deep-deep, deep-a-deep-deep doo

n/a, Thursday, 8 March 2007 16:19 (seventeen years ago) link

Name that tune.

n/a, Thursday, 8 March 2007 16:19 (seventeen years ago) link

It's not by Television or the Peechees.

n/a, Thursday, 8 March 2007 16:23 (seventeen years ago) link

Or Peaches.

n/a, Thursday, 8 March 2007 16:23 (seventeen years ago) link

My first thought was "Glass" by Gang of Four, but then I think that's more like

Deep deep deep deep deep-a-doo-doo.

jaymc, Thursday, 8 March 2007 16:25 (seventeen years ago) link

"Deep Doodoo" by the Shit Shovelers

kenan, Thursday, 8 March 2007 16:26 (seventeen years ago) link

"Deep in the Heart of Texas"

dan m, Thursday, 8 March 2007 16:26 (seventeen years ago) link

It's an instrumental.

n/a, Thursday, 8 March 2007 16:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Stereolab?

Jeff, Thursday, 8 March 2007 16:27 (seventeen years ago) link
