kot can not actually believe the paybacks are detroit's finest can he? they're really awful. and i'm not sure why that band, on paper, should be awesome but on record they're bland recycled bar/garage rock. although the version of "black girl" that's on "sympathetic sounds of detroit" is kick ass nothing they've done in the intervening 6 years has been remotely interesting. even when they re-recorded that song for their full length they stripped it of whatever feeling it had and put a high gloss finish on it.

chicago kevin, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:12 (seventeen years ago) link

Sure, Kot can believe that, because he's a ninny.

n/a, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:14 (seventeen years ago) link

ninny is a great word and one i should use more often. it's so dismissive and if you try to rebuke the ninny tag you only wind up sounding like a bigger one.

chicago kevin, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:15 (seventeen years ago) link

i really miss images being replaced by links.

chicago kevin, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:17 (seventeen years ago) link

It's just an image of Greg Kot looking like a ninny.

n/a, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:19 (seventeen years ago) link

I actually like Kot quite a bit. Don't always agree with him, but he's a sharp guy. (Also he gave deej a job.) DeRogatis is still a doofus.

jaymc, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:20 (seventeen years ago) link

I was worried "ninny" might have homophobic implications, but all the definitions I see online basically just say it means a fool or simpleton. They think it might be a simplication of "an innocent." Interesting!

n/a, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:21 (seventeen years ago) link

i don't really like any of the rock critics in town since bob mehr left for memphis.

chicago kevin, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:27 (seventeen years ago) link

i haven't clicked the link but i take it that it's the one on division? the use of intentionally whimsy in the slogans in the front window makes me kind of dubious.

chicago kevin, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:28 (seventeen years ago) link

Just a guess, but I would imagine the real "best band out of Detroit" would involve Fred Thomas.

dan m, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:33 (seventeen years ago) link

right now i'd say it's human eye but what do i know.

chicago kevin, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Bob Mehr is completely unmemorable to me. What did you like about him, Kevin?

I will say that Kot's writing is the sort of workmanlike prose you can expect from a daily newspaper guy, but he generally knows what he's talking about, and his tastes are surprisingly eclectic for someone in his position (e.g. Girl Talk ending up on his top 10 last year).

jaymc, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:35 (seventeen years ago) link

[Removed Illegal Image]

Whatever for? Gregg Kott is obviously a huge cock smoker.

END ROCK CRITIC AFFIRMATIVE ACTION

n/a, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Ok, I officially fucking hate these new tags. Who made this shit up, and why, when there's already perfectly good BBcode that mode people are at least passingly familiar with? Especially the link tag. There has never been another tag like it, making it not only counterintuitive but totally illogical.

kenan, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:38 (seventeen years ago) link

I totally made my point with that devastating zing.

n/a, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Spicy food is beginning to give me gastrointestinal distress. That frightens me. I love spicy food.

kenan, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:39 (seventeen years ago) link

i got post bar cheeseburgers last night and they were so fucking good. i kinda wish i had a couple more right now.

chicago kevin, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:43 (seventeen years ago) link

CORNED BEEF HASH FOR BREKKY. Not going to lose any weight on the corned beef hash diet but OH no regrets.

Laurel, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:44 (seventeen years ago) link

i never get tired of seeing pictures of the bean:

I ate hot green curry, followed by chips and hot tomatillo salsa, and woke up this morning with my lower g.i. tract devoutly wishing to be rid of these irritants.

kenan, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:45 (seventeen years ago) link

I lurve that picture. Especially the people in it... lying on the ground, snuggling with an s.o., etc.

kenan, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Kevin, have you ever heard Cuckold? They're fronted by an ex-Gravitar dude. I wish they'd come here and play. They're sort of like a Laughing Hyenas/Mudhoney type trio.

Here is their Myspace, even though it's probably blocked for ya...

dan m, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:47 (seventeen years ago) link

myspace is blocked but yes i've heard of cuckold, they're playing with the moonlight (ex-dirtys, ex-compulsive gamblers), chrome spiders (tom potter's new band), and timmy vulgar (ex clone defect, currently of human eye) at the hamtramck this weekend. unless it was last night.

chicago kevin, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:51 (seventeen years ago) link

Lightning Bolt is playing at some UofC coffeeshop on March 31. I am tempted to go.

I am listening to the new Wilco album, it's really really really boring so far.

I am full of opinions today! Does anyone have any questions about my opinions on anything?

n/a, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:51 (seventeen years ago) link

er, the hamtramck blowout.

chicago kevin, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:51 (seventeen years ago) link

Ah yes, a number of my Detroit friends are attending said Blowout.

dan m, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:53 (seventeen years ago) link

nick, in your opinion should i go to paul cary/gay baby show at phyllis' or the clockcleaner/times new viking show at permanent records tonight? i've seen clockcleaner before but not TNV but i'm friends with the people in gay baby and it's their 2nd show (and 1st chicago show). what say you nick?

chicago kevin, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:54 (seventeen years ago) link

dan, i kind of wish i was going to that. i want to see chrome spiders.

chicago kevin, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:55 (seventeen years ago) link

<i>Opening night will be devoted to "legendary" rock, rap and experimental music performers, each doing a "classic album" in its entirety, a festival spokesman says.</i>

How it's done!

Eazy, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:57 (seventeen years ago) link

Rats, I want to see TNV. I've always missed them one way or another.

Laurel, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:57 (seventeen years ago) link

The only one of those bands I've heard of is Times New Viking, so go to that. Plus, Phyllis' is dumb.

n/a, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:58 (seventeen years ago) link

PETER FRAMPTON!!!! 3RD BASS!!!!! YOKO ONO!!!!!!

chicago kevin, Friday, 9 March 2007 14:58 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, plus that show starts at 9 so i could probably scoot up to phyllis' if it gets over early. i never heard of permanent records until this show, has anyone here been there? 1900 block of chicago?

chicago kevin, Friday, 9 March 2007 15:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, it's a nice little record store. You can buy the FF album there.

n/a, Friday, 9 March 2007 15:02 (seventeen years ago) link

It's pretty tiny.

n/a, Friday, 9 March 2007 15:02 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm eating cream of wheat with strawberries in it which is the opposite of both spicy food and corned beef hash.

"Lighting Bolt" and "coffee shop" seems like an odd artist/venue combination.

Jenny, Friday, 9 March 2007 15:04 (seventeen years ago) link

Nick, I only got as far as ripping five Field Music songs last night before iTunes crapped out (either 'cause of scratched cd or shitty computer, I'm not sure but I'm guessing the latter). I tried sending those to you but apparently YSI sucks these days? It kept saying I should upgrade my browser and never completed a transfer.

Jordan, Friday, 9 March 2007 15:07 (seventeen years ago) link

:(

n/a, Friday, 9 March 2007 15:09 (seventeen years ago) link

I think LB typically avoids playing "rock venues."
